Engineering design is the process of studying requirements, and coming up with a plan to produce a system or device that will provide a solution to the requirement or problem. The person who designs the solution has to go through the various stages of the design process to arrive at an optimal solution.

The first phase is to recognize a problem, or a situation that can be improved. The second phase involves defining the problem, that is listing the data that needs to be processed, all the constraints within which the solution should operate, like business practice, statutory requirements etc. Then, defining the kind of solution required.

Then comes the actual design process which goes through stages of conceptual design, when different plans can be created, feasibility study to determine the relevance, validity, and economic feasibility of the proposed solutions. Then comes preliminary design of the selected solution, then presentation design, planning for manufacture, planning for distribution, planning for use, and finally, planning for retirement of the product.

This book studies these aspects with relevance to machines. It begins with an introduction to the machine design process, then examines engineering materials and their properties.

The book then discusses manufacturing considerations in machine design, simple stresses in machine parts, torional and bending stresses in machine parts, and variable stresses in machine parts.

Then the book goes on to discuss pressure joints, pipes and pipe joints, riveted joints, welded joints, screwed joints, cotter and knuckle joints, keys and coupling, shafts, levers, columns and struts, and power screws.

It then looks at flat belt drives, flat belt pulleys, V-belt and rope drives, chain drives, flywheel, springs, clutches, brakes, sliding contact bearings and rolling contact bearings, spur gears, helical gears, bevel gears, worm gears, and internal combustion engine parts.

This multicolored edition includes appropriate illustrations and pictures to further elucidate the theory. It also includes sufficient number of solved and unsolved problems for clarification and practice.

IIT Bombay under the aegis of National Programme on Differential Equations – Theory, Computation, and Applications (NPDE-TCA) is inviting applications for its winter internships to give opportunity to both under graduate and postgraduate students to participate in short term projects.

About NPDE-TCA : NPDE-TCA is a 5 year national program sponsored by Department of Science & Technology and being managed by IIT Bombay ‘To create human resource and generate knowledge source for academia and industry in the area of differential equations for real life problems.

Internship Program in Technology Supported Education (IPTSE)'s Winter School, 2013

This internship program in technology-supported education, now in its 5th year, draws on a selection of broad areas that at times has included mobile learning, educational games, technology-assisted language learning, computer-assisted collaborative learning, intelligent tutors, machine learning, educational data mining, human-computer interaction, as well as speech and language technologies. The goal is to create an international bridge between institutions of higher learning in India and Carnegie Mellon University, which is at the forefront of research both in technology and in the learning sciences in the US, and even worldwide.

This year they will have 3 tracks which you can work on and you will have to choose 2 tracks of your choice, one primary and second one that is secondary. And you will work on only one track.

And the tracks for this year are:

1) DataMining Track: Foundational issues in data mining applied to a variety of types of data. The course is oriented around a hands-on project that will offer students the opportunity to gain experience with available tool kits and work towards making their own contribution to this kind of work.),

2) Educational Games: Digital games tap into popular culture to let us reach learners in a fun, engaging way. The purpose of this track is to expose students to foundational issues in educational games. The course is oriented around a hands-on project that will offer students the opportunity to design and implement a novel game around a subject that they choose, while gaining experience with available tool kits for game development.

3) Image Processing Track: The purpose of this track is to expose students to the foundational issues in image processing. The course is oriented around a hands-on project that will offer students the opportunity to gain experience with available tool kits and work towards making their own contribution to this kind of work.

This internship program provides valuable research training opportunities for Indian undergraduates through a partnership between one of India's premier technical universities and one of the top ranking schools of computer science in the world, with the goal of expanding the pool of talented young researchers in India. A secondary goal is to provide a mechanism through which ongoing research partnerships can form and flourish between researchers at institutes for higher learning in India and researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, such as taking the form of co-advised B.Tech projects. And finally, the internship program directly benefits the infrastructure for education in India as a biproduct of the research projects the students will engage in. As part of the internship program, participants will focus on topics relevant to education in India, and in the developing world more generally.

Stages: The internship program is composed of two stages. In the first stage, students apply to participate in a two-week winter school in early December in India. During these two weeks, students will attend lectures that will cover research and research methodologies, tools and techniques, insights about theory and practice, and a broad overview of the field of technology-supported education. Students will participate in team projects, which will be presented in demo sessions at the end of the winter school. Students who successfully complete the winter school will be invited to apply for research internships at Carnegie Mellon University. Successful applicants for stage two will be matched with internship advisors for a summer internship at Carnegie Mellon University's main campus in Pittsburgh, USA, for the summer. Some financial support for the summer internship may be available.

Who can apply: 3rd year BE/B.Tech students are eligible.

Location: MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore

Duration: 2 weeks (December 9 - 23, 2013)

The University of Alberta Research Experience (U ARE) is an internship program allowing top senior undergraduate students to conduct research at UAlberta under the supervision of a faculty member.

U ARE internship placements are available during the summer (May to August).

Location: University of Alberta, Canada

Duration: U ARE summer internships will be available May-August 2014. Placements range from 10 weeks to four months.

Stipend: Student stipend of CAD 5,000 per intern (CAD 3,000 in central funding + CAD 2,000 commitment from the UAlberta faculty member).

ELIGIBILITY:
Participants must meet the following criteria:

• Normally a senior undergraduate student (3rd or 4th year).

• Enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur or University of Hyderabad!

• Have a minimum Grade Point Average equivalent to B+, 3.3 on a 4-point scale, or 7 on a 10-point scale. For other grading scales, contact your institution for equivalencies.
