Some games are art. Some games tell a story. Others are designed test our timing, intellect, or patience. Some are just fun. Konami’sTornado Outbreak falls into that last category. It’s an enjoyable, lighthearted romp that one shouldn’t take too seriously.

Tornado Outbreak is, to put it in no uncertain terms, a Katamari clone. In the game you play as a tornado (well, as a character that generates tornadoes, but it ends up being about the same thing) and you absorb things on the ground, getting bigger as you take in more and more. If something is too big you can’t destroy it until you are large enough, so you build your way up to items of larger scale. It’s very simple, but it’s a satisfying experience to destroy a barn when a few minutes ago you were dealing with shrubs and car tires.

Unfortunately, unlike Katamari, the items you collect are simply blown off screen, rather than rolled up into a wonderful ball of what was previously your surroundings. This is the first of a number of ways in whichTornado Outrbreak does not match up to it’s spiritual predecessor. Outbreak is neither as graphically pleasing nor as amusing as any of the Katamari titles. Additionally it lacks Katamari’s humor, devilish nature, it’s charm, and even its scale. The music isn’t nearly as good either.

Tornado Outbreak isn’t necessarily a bad game, it’s just not a very good one. The destroy-to-grow mechanic is satisfying and while the game is easy (as well as accessible to all ages), statistics are taken so more skilled players can challenge themselves while other can be content to just progress through the game. Unfortunately the game is simplistic and quickly grows repetitive, so from one level to the next it’s really only the scenery changing (before you blow it all away).

Tornado Outbreak does have a few changes from Katamari, but none of them really pop. The best addition is the collection of fireball characters which add to your countdown timer after you collect then. The more you catch in a single run, the more time goes on the clock. The catch is that as you collect them a separate timer starts and yourtornado ’s movement slows down as the timer approaches zero. Get more fireballs and the time refills, if you can’t you release the trigger and a few seconds go on the board. The game also has a mode where you race in a circle to create the perfecttornado and boss battles. These could be a nice change of pace, but they ended up being easy and repetitive.

Overall, Tornado Outbreak is simple fun for people of all ages. It’s simple and saccharine and it very much feels like the 10+ “E for everyone” game that it is. People over the age of 14 should be wary, but it could be a very good gift this year for a young gamer. It misses much of what makes Katamari Damacy great, but there are still a number of people out there who will enjoy
