Elon Law Homecoming Events!

Homecoming 2009 features two exciting Elon University School of Law events:

Dean George R. Johnson, Jr., J.D., and Professor Roland Smith, Ph.D., will present “Legal Leadership in Times of Change: Increasing Lawyer Competence and Enhancing Proficiency in Time of Complexity.” (see reverse). This program is designed to provide lawyers with tools and knowledge to enhance their ability to make effective decisions and improve proficiency in these ever-changing times of global economic challenges. Elon has applied for 1.75 hours of CLE credit.

This program is free of charge and will be held on Friday, October 23 at 2:00 p.m. at the Law School in the Long Courtroom, home to the North Carolina Business Court, 201 North Greene Street, Greensboro. (Advance registration required – form is enclosed).

The Elon Law Alumni Association will host its charter Homecoming social event on Friday, October 23 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Natty Greene’s Pub & Brewing Co., located at 345 South Elm Street, Greensboro. This inaugural event promises to be the launch of future alumni gatherings at Homecoming and across the state and country – come be a part of the action, meet your newest legal colleagues and hear more about Elon Law!

Elon University Mock Trial Still Needs Judges!

Elon University Mock Trial needs alumni and students to volunteer their time and legal knowledge to the upcoming competition. They are still in need of judges for all rounds, with our biggest needs in Round 1, Round 3 and Round 4 (see below for times). Please continue to read on how you can help out a great tournament and improve the image of Elon Law and University nationwide.

Description of Duties:

As a judge, you will rate the performance of teams on openings, closings, direct, and cross, and you also rate top attorney’s and witnesses. You can either serve as a “Presiding Judge” or a “Commenting Judge.” The only difference is that the “Presiding Judge” will rule on objections. Both judges will score and critique the students. The rules of evidence are a pretty close derivative of the federal rules. You really don’t need experience in Mock Trial to serve as a judge, and you can judge one round or all the rounds or any number in between.

This year’s case is a criminal case, and it promises to bring out some good work from the students. It is exceptionally important that these students, coming from as far away as Florida and as near as UNC (or Duke depending on your affiliation!) get the experience of trying cases before attorneys. These are undergraduate students who will likely one day attend law school. It would be great to show these students the amazing lawyers that come out of Elon Law.

Sunday, October 18 – Round 4 – 8:15AM – 12:00PM *Free lunch at our Closing Ceremony Banquet in McKinnon Hall*

Elon Law Grads Excel on the NC Bar Exam According to the Business Journal

From the NC Business Journal: The inaugural class of graduates from Elon University School of Law passed the state’s bar exam at a rate similar to other established schools in North Carolina, according to the N.C. Board of Law Examiners.

Elon graduated its first law students in May, and among those students who took the bar exam for the first time in July, 83 percent passed.

By comparison, UNC-Chapel Hill had an 87 percent passage rate, and Duke University posted an 85 percent passage rate.

Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Opportunity

From the President of the Greensboro Bar Association:

Dear Friends:

We are nearing the start of our Habitat Project, with the first workday scheduled on September 12 (Saturday after Labor Day) and much to be accomplished between now and then. There is great news to report:

* First and most important, we have been assigned a homeowner – Denise Perkins. Denise has a full-time job at Guilford Child Development Center. She has two boys, ages 6 and 9. They are now living in a small, two-bedroom apartment. Our project will be a huge step forward in their lives. Denise’s picture is attached. She will be our partner in the project.

* Four Supreme Court Justices have accepted our invitation to join us on September 12 – Chief Justice Parker, and Justices Edmunds, Hudson and Newby. Barring any unforeseen scheduling conflicts, they will join us for the work that day and remain for the ceremony and dinner that follows. We hope to hear soon from the other three Justices and are hopeful that one or more of them can come as well. Many thanks to Justice Edmunds and to former Chief Justice Jim Exum for lining up the support from the Court.

* We have received strong support from the District Court Judges, who are joining together to work on the house. Many thanks to Judge Sizemore for organizing their effort.

* World Famous PIGMASTERS, the pig-picking team of Greensboro lawyers, has agreed to serve the dinner on September 12.
We have not been assigned a specific lot as yet, but we know we will be building in the Willow Oaks neighborhood, on McConnell Road near its intersection with English Street. We will not only be providing a home for Denise and her family, but will also contribute to the completion of the City’s Willow Oak Project, which has brought about a dramatic change in this area of the city. We will shortly provide you with the address for our house and with a website page for viewing the house plans, the work schedule for next Fall and other news.

WITH SEPTEMBER 12 FAST APPROACHING AND THE SUPREME COURT ON THE WAY, WE NEED YOUR HELP TO GET READY:

* We have made great progress in our fundraising but we are still short of our $30,000 goal. Please fill out the attached CONTRIBUTION FORM and mail your gift to the GBA office. There are only a few weeks left for us to meet our commitment to Habitat and we badly need your support. HELP TAKE US OVER THE TOP AND GET THE FUNDRAISING BEHIND US!

* We have a GREAT NEED for more volunteers. Spouses and law firm staff as well as GBA members are welcome. Please fill out the attached VOLUNTEER FORM and mail it to the GBA office! We need your help on the worksite regardless of whether you are able to contribute money or have done so already. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate minor children but everyone else is encouraged to sign up now.

This project will give us the chance to provide a hands up to a hard working family, to share the experience of building with one another and with our Supreme Court, to help revitalize a Greensboro neighborhood and to make an emphatic statement about the Greensboro Bar and what we represent.

Elon Law Olympics – Champion Crowned

As most of you know, the Olympics concluded yesterday afternoon at Country Park. Students from each class participated and competed in 6 events, and we couldn’t have asked for better weather. Thank you to everyone who participated, showed support for their classmates, and made the final day of the Olympics one to remember.

The final standings:

1) 1st PLACE – 3L Class – 80.5 points
2) 2nd PLACE – 1L Class – 60 points
3) 3rd PLACE – 2L Class – 39.5 points

Congratulations to the 3L Class for being the first ever Elon Law Olympic Champions. The ‘Class of 2009′ will be engraved upon the Elon Law Cup which will be featured in the Commons. Attached is a complete breakdown of point totals for each event.

With that said, we at SBA would like to thank each of you for your participation as well as support of your fellow classmates over the course of these 23 events. A special thanks goes out to everyone who helped with the Olympics and made what we hope will become a lasting and enjoyable tradition at Elon.

Today during lunch there will be BBQ (along with buns), baked beans, and peach cobbler left over from yesterday, for those who wish to partake.

Opening Nominations for Elections Committee

On behalf of the Honor Council, I would like to notify you that the Provost has approved the Elon University School of Law Honor Code. Our Honor Code therefore has officially been adopted and is now in effect. We have attached a copy of the Honor Code for you to read. The Code is also available at http://elonsba.org/documents/ .

The Honor Council will also be nominating a new elections committee. The elections committee oversees SBA and Honor Council elections in the fall and spring semesters. Due to the temporary nature of the currently sitting elections committee, the upcoming committee will only oversee the fall 2009 election.

SBA Appropriations Committee Positions Available for 2009-2010

The SBA Executive Council is currently accepting statements of interest from students interested in serving on the Appropriations Committee for the upcoming 2009-10 academic year.

The Appropriations Committee is primarily designed to manage the Phoenix Grant Budget Hearings in the Fall Semester. Accordingly, the committee also meets to discuss emergency funding requests and the creation of new programs under the office of the Treasurer. The Appropriations Committee voting members consist of two rising second year students and two rising third year students. The Treasurer acts as chair of the committee and shall not have a vote, except in the event of a tie. All decisions by the Appropriations Committee are subject to SBA Congress’ approval.

Interested students are requested to send a statement (300 words or less) detailing their interest and explaining why they believe they would be a good fit for the Appropriations Committee. Statements of interest will be accepted through Monday, April 27th at 11:59 PM. Selections will be announced by Friday, May 1st.

Interested students are strongly encouraged to apply. The Appropriations Committee offers an excellent opportunity to become involved and take part in helping to shape the future of Elon Law and its many outstanding Student Organizations and Committees. Graduation Town Hall Thursday at Noon

Dean Woodlief has graciously agreed to be present at a Graduation Town Hall this Thursday, at noon, in Room 207. At this meeting, he will hopefully be able to speak to all the concerns that everyone has regarding our upcoming graduation.
I hope everyone will attend; however, to be safe, I have contacted Christi to see about having this meeting recorded for anyone who is unable to make it.

If you have any questions that you would like answered at this meeting, please e-mail them to me ASAP (or by Wednesday, 5 p.m. at the latest), so that I may forward them on to the Administration.

9/11 Revisited, An Act of War or An Act of Organized Crime?

The Elon Law Chapter of the Federalist Society is hosting “9/11 Revisited, An Act of War or An Act of Organized Crime?”, a discussion regarding national security and the law with participants: Professor Michael W. Lewis, Ohio Northern University & Professor Victor Streib, Elon University School of Law. Expected topics to be covered include terrorism and related anti-terror measures such as the use of torture. It will be held on Thursday, April 23, at 11:00 a.m. in Room 206.

Our visitor, Professor Lewis, is a graduate of the prestigious “Top Gun” pilot school and a veteran of Operation Desert Shield, where he flew F-14 fighter jets on behalf of the U.S. Navy. He then graduated from Harvard Law School, cum laude.

FLS: Lunch and Judges’ Panel Tomorrow at 12:00

The Family Law Society will be hosting its final event of the semester tomorrow in the business court from 12:30 to 1:30. Lunch will be provided by Subway and will be complemented by a homemade dessert! Lunch will be available in the foyer outside the business court from 12:00 to 12:30 and in room 105 beginning at 12:15. Please keep in mind that food is strictly prohibited in the business court.

The Judges’ panel will consist of Chief District Court Judge Turner, Judges Thomas Jarrell and Judge Teresa Vincent.

Elon Law Olympics Finale!

The final date of the Olympics has been set for:

The final day will consist of the final 6 events of the Olympics, lunch from Stamey’s BBQ, as well as the Olympic Ceremony (trophy presentation). This event is open to friends and family and we are hoping for good weather this time around.

The final six events are:
1) Corn hole
2) Sack Race
3) Egg Toss
4) 3-Legged Race
5) Wheel Barrow Race
6) Pie Eating Contest

Participation in these events is limited to students already signed up for them (for the list of participants, see attached).

Also, attached is an excel document with a current tally for the Olympic Games. Points have been allotted as follows:

1st Place = 5 pts
2nd Place = 3 pts
3rd Place = 1 pt
*Combined Class 1st Place = 2.5 pts
*Combined Class 2nd Place = 1.5 pts
** Canned Food Drive, Clothing Drive, and WLA Race – Points were awarded on the basis of each class’s participation in those events.

*If two classes combined to form one team (i.e. 1L & 2L v. 3L), the combined classes split the first place points (5 pts for 1st = 2.5 for each class because they would not have been able to field a team otherwise), and the class on its own receives the 2nd place points (3).

Marc Trestman to Speak at Elon Law

Next Wednesday, April 22nd the Center for Engaged Learning in the Law is having Marc Trestman, Head Coach of the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League speak on ”Developing Leadership Qualities From Life Lessons” at noon in room 107.
All students, faculty and staff are welcome.

More About Trestman

Trestman graduated in 1974 from St. Louis Park (MN) High School. He played quarterback for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team for three seasons. He transferred as a senior to play quarterback at Moorhead State, and then returned to Minnesota to get his degree. Trestman received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Minnesota in 1979 and is a graduate of the University of Miami School of Law. He has been a member of the Florida bar since 1983.

Trestman went to training camp with the Minnesota Vikings in both 1978 and 1979 as a defensive back. He entered football coaching at the University of Miami in 1981 as a volunteer coach. In 1983, he was named quarterbacks coach. That year quarterback Bernie Kosar passed for 2,329 yards and Miami won the national championship. The next year Kosar completed 262 passes for 3,642 yards, both school records.

Trestman then moved to the National Football League and coached the running backs with the Minnesota Vikings in 1985 and 1986. He became quarterbacks coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1987 then held the same position with the Cleveland Browns in 1988. In Cleveland he again coached Kosar and the team finished 10-6 and made the playoffs. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1989. That year Kosar passed for 3,533 yards and 18 TDs, wide receiver Webster Slaughter had a franchise record 1,236 receiving yards, and the Browns made it to the AFC Championship game.

In 1990, Trestman returned to Minnesota as quarterbacks coach for the Vikings. He spent two years there and then left coaching for three years. He returned to the NFL in 1995 as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator with San Francisco, where he served in that capacity through 1996. The first year he was there the 49ers led the NFL with 457 points scored, 644 pass attempts and 4,779 passing yards.

Trestman moved to the Detroit Lions and quarterbacks coach in 1997. That year Lion’s quarterback Scott Mitchell passed for 3,484 yards, second most in team history.

In 1998 he was with the Arizona Cardinals as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. That year quarterback Jake Plummer threw for 3,737 yards, and the Cardinals made the playoffs for the first time since 1982 and won their first post season game in 51 years.

He next went to the Oakland Raiders in 2001 as the quarterbacks coach. In 2002 he was promoted to offensive coordinator and the Raiders led the NFL in total offense with 389.8 yards per game and passing yards with 279.7 per game. That Raider team made it to the Super Bowl but lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Trestman spent the 2004 season with the Miami Dolphins and in 2005 he returned to college football as the North Carolina State Wolfpack offensive coordinator where he was known for being a conservative play-caller.

On 18 December 2007, Trestman was confirmed as the head coach for the Montreal Alouettes. Trestman worked with André Woodson leading up to the 2008 NFL Draft in an attempt to help improve Woodson’s throwing mechanics and draft stock.

SBA Update

I promise you this will be my last e-mail as SBA President. I’d like to address a number of different issues. I’ve tried to keep this as brief as possible, but I hope that doesn’t give the impression that it is unimportant. Also, on behalf of all of the 2008-2009 SBA, thank you all for your support and it has been great representing you all.

Barrister’s Ball: We would encourage you all to attend this years Barrister’s Ball. Tickets will be sold in Cemala Commons on Thursday. This year’s band is the nationally known Embers, a beach music band. We hope you will join us for this great law school tradition. If you have any questions about Barrister’s Ball contact the chair of the Social Committee, Mark Jetton at mjetton@elon.edu.

Graduation Tickets and Broadcast: We have heard and understand some of the concerns regarding the inability to broadcast the graduation ceremony. Due to these concerns, we have asked the administration to discuss this option in further detail with main campus. They have agreed to look into other possible options. Again, this in no way means that it will be broadcast but the administration has agreed to look again at the situation. Along the same lines, Matt Covington has set up a ticket exchange at www.ElonSBA.org. We are aware that there is a Facebook group but some of those without Facebook have asked us to replicate those efforts. Be sure to thank Matt Covington for putting this together and for all of the work he has done over the past year with www.ElonSBA.org.

Crime Scene Looking Front Door: I, along with many of other students, have been put off with the way the front door looks similar to a crime scene. This has been addressed with the administration and should be changed shortly.

1L Leadership Class / Program: We have had quite a bit of feedback about the first year Leadership class. We have communicated this with the administration and they explained that the faculty was currently discussing how to best leverage the leadership program so that it is something that can become a cornerstone of an Elon Law education.

Summer Schedule: After speaking with the administration they explained that the summer schedule was almost ready to go and should be ready to be sent out shortly. They could not give an exact date but they said that it was imminent.

Congrats to the new SBA: We also want to congratulate the newest members of SBA. We are confident that this is the strongest group that the school has ever had. Elon Law will be well represented and whether we are students or alums, we are excited to see the great things this group has to offer!

Bar Review Moved to Grey’s Tavern
