Elemental Hosts and Streams Ballot Measure Discussion

Today Elemental hosted civic leaders at our downtown Portland headquarters for a discussion of ballot measures slated for the May 21, 2013 Special Election. Participants included Bob Stacey, District 6 Metro Councilor, Dan Mahr, Portland Children’s Fund campaign manager, Kellie Barnes of Clean Water Portland and Mike Plunkett of Healthy Kids, Healthy Portland. Interested in seeing what was discussed? You're in luck! We've made the stream available on-demand here.

Stacey described Measure 26-152, which seeks approval for a levy that improves natural areas and improves water quality for fish, while Mahr provided details about Measure 26-150, which renews a five-year levy to prevent child abuse and hunger. Barnes and Plunkett explored both sides of Measure 26-151, a lightning rod topic that asks voters whether fluoride should be added to Portland’s water.

“Every voice counts in elections! With voting only two weeks away, we wanted to provide a forum for education and idea exchange for our employees about these important ballot measures. We are deeply appreciative to these leaders for sharing their time and insights,” said Emily Barrett, who runs Elemental’s community ambassador program. “We’re proud to facilitate this kind of dialogue and public engagement.”

Election ballots started mailing May 3 and must be received by county elections office by 8 p.m. on May 21.
Elemental Brings Live Strip Cam to NAB in Las Vegas

This year at NAB, Elemental unveils a unique demonstration we like to call the “Strip Cam”. In conjunction with LiveU, we plan to bring live video captured on the Las Vegas Strip to the NAB show floor via our newly announced Elemental Cloud platform.

The Strip Cam demonstration will feature a camera mounted on a fully clothed human tripod roaming the Las Vegas Strip capturing live content, which in turn will be transmitted via LiveU's portable LU40s cellular-bonding unit to Elemental Cloud for multiscreen video processing and delivery. The end-to-end live application will be delivered over the course of the show to mobile platforms in both the LiveU and Elemental booths.

Missing the gorgeous weather outside? Get a live look at the fountains at Bellagio, the roller coaster running full tilt at New York, New York and perhaps even pirate activity at Treasure Island during your visit to the Elemental booth next week. All the Strip has to offer will be on view through a completely untethered and cloud-based demonstration. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but anything can happen on a Strip Cam live stream!

To learn more about Elemental Cloud, join us for a cocktail reception in the Elemental booth SU2724 on Tuesday, April 9, from 5 to 6 p.m. The reception will feature executives from Amazon Web Services, Elemental and Warner Bros. speaking to the development of innovative cloud-based architectures for formatting large-scale video assets. And we’ll have our Strip Cam running. We look forward to seeing you at the show!

Elemental Cloud Goes Live @NAB

Today Elemental launched Elemental Cloud, its Platform as a Service (PaaS) for securely managing the creation of premium live and on demand content for delivery to every screen. To mark the occasion, we invite you to take a video tour to learn more about the industry’s most advanced architecture for video processing in the cloud, with a platform that dynamically scales resources and provides the flexibility of seamless integration with on-premise video operations.

Media companies that don’t have enough video processing infrastructure to meet variable demand may find it difficult to keep up with customer expectations for top-quality service. The cloud offers a rational and cost-effective solution to the problem of variable demand for multiscreen content by offering the ability to instantly scale up video processing capacity to accommodate high-traffic events, and then scale back down again as traffic wanes. You can read more about Elemental Cloud in our latest white paper.

Elemental will demonstrate Elemental Cloud performing live encoding at NAB in booth SU2724. Elemental and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are also co-hosting a cocktail reception in the Elemental booth on Tuesday, April 9 from 5 to 6 p.m. The reception will feature executives from AWS and Elemental speaking to the development of innovative cloud-based architectures for formatting large-scale video assets. Be sure to visit our booth during the show for a chance to win a Kindle Fire HD, courtesy of AWS.
Flying Saucers and Climbing Robots: The Invasion Begins March 8

For the past six weeks, teams of high school students around the world have been designing, collaborating, marketing, animating, programming and building robots to compete in the 2013 FIRST Robotics Challenge regional tournaments. This year, teams are preparing robots for a game called “Ultimate Ascent”, a mix of Frisbee and climbing played between two Alliances of three teams each. Each Alliance competes with robots aiming as many flying discs as possible into goals during a two-minute and 15-second match. Matches end with robots attempting to successfully climb pyramids located near the middle of the playing field. The Oregon regional tournament takes place March 8-9 at the Portland Memorial Coliseum.

Elemental is proud to support this event for the second consecutive year. We’ll be on hand with our live encoder to capture all the action from the pit in the Coliseum and stream it live over the Internet. Thanks to Elemental gear and volunteer staff on-site to run the video streaming portion of the event, you can watch these young engineers operating robots in a tournament setting on your computer, iPad, iPhone or Android device. Check out the live event stream here.

The Ultimate Ascent competition progresses in stages. On February 19, robots were “bagged and tagged”, signifying the end of the build season. Work continues, however, right up to the regional competition with each team testing and refining their mechanisms and code. Teams also use this time leading up to the regional events to hone their skills at robot operation, alliance strategy and designing additional flair!

Sound like fun? It is. But it’s also hard work giving the students preparing these robots plenty of practical

experience in engineering, marketing, project management and other skills they’ll be able to use in the world after high school, into college and beyond.

“The experience provided by participation in the FIRST robotics programs is something many professional engineers wish we could have had when we were in high school,” said Don Nelke, principal software engineer at Elemental. “From a personal perspective, two of my children have participated in FIRST Lego League and FRC Robotics programs. The eldest of the two, my daughter, was inspired by this program and is currently enrolled in the engineering program at OSU. My son continues with this year’s FRC season.”

FIRST or ‘For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology’ was founded in 1989 as a non-profit organization to “inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology”. The FIRST goal is to provide programs that motivate students to explore science, technology, engineering and math through education while laying the foundation for future careers in the technology arena. The program seeks to inspire self-confidence, innovation, and build leadership skills in the student participants and its success can be attributed to the enthusiastic participation of corporate sponsors, mentors, and volunteers from the community.

We can all be proud of the students who choose to participate in the program and the volunteers who mentor these bright young minds. If you're in the Portland area, come by the Coliseum this Friday or Saturday to show your support and see this exciting event up close. Or tune into the live stream from your computer or mobile device to see the young engineers and robots compete. Elemental wishes the best of luck to all competitors in the tournament!

Elemental <3 Innovation

This Valentine's Day, Elemental declares its latest loves with the pairing of two independent announcements that are receiving a lot of jealous stares in the market. They discuss the marriage of the two most significant technology migrations we’ve undertaken in the past two years. And while this news doesn’t necessarily come wrapped in a bow, we’re seeing that the market loves innovation as much as we do.

The first is a heartfelt release supported by Comcast and NVIDIA, which announces our architecture migration to the latest NVIDIA Tesla GPU accelerators based on the Kepler architecture. NVIDIA’s next generation processors give Elemental Live and Elemental Server double the performance of previous generation solutions.

The second spreads the love a bit more with the disclosure of our 2.0 software release. This release advances us to a full-fledged unified platform for multiscreen video. This is a major release with a host of features that lets customers across market segments more widely deploy and monetize multiscreen video services.

The binding tie between both of these announcements is that unlike most technology innovation press releases, they don’t necessarily predict the future. Instead they tell the story of what we’ve already accomplished in the market with these advances. Dozens of media brands have deployed our new platforms in production environments and more than 100 customers have taken the leap and upgraded to software release 2.0.

Portland Technology Sector Continues to Show Promise

Last week, we were excited to see Portland-based ventures well represented on Forbes’ annual list of America’s Most Promising Companies. Elemental, Act-On Software and Jama Software all received recognition as one of a hundred privately held, high-growth companies in the U.S. with bright futures. Elemental landed at 23 on the Forbes list for 2013, moving up from its position at number 54 in last year’s rankings.

The spotlight has been shining brightly on the local technology community recently. Marshall Kirkpatrick, CEO of Little Bird, highlighted Portland’s startup momentum in a Wall Street Journal article earlier this month. He notes $30 million-plus raises by Puppet Labs and Janrain, $20 million-plus raised by Urban Airship and Vendscreen, almost $10 million by Cloudability and a number of seed rounds, including Little Bird’s, which was led by Mark Cuban. “Portland is stepping up to the challenge of building technology companies that can compete globally,” writes Kirkpatrick. Elemental shares that sentiment and it’s encouraging to see the message spreading. Clearly, technology companies in the area are thriving, so much so that practical issues such as available office space (or lack thereof) in downtown Portland is a looming issue.

Portland has been high profile in the Wall Street Journal lately, with Mat Ellis, CEO of Cloudability, also posting recently in the Accelerator section. He points to camaraderie playing a big role in Portland’s recent run of tech success: “One factor that seems unique to Portland is networking: quite simply, Portlanders are world class at it. Locals describe it as the pioneer spirit: Help your neighbor as you’ll never know when you’ll need their help. Whatever it is, sometimes it feels like the whole city is cheering us on.”

In a final plug for the Portland technology scene, this Friday the Portland Business Journal will host its Forty under 40 Awards Reception, featuring nine honorees from Portland technology companies. Elemental will be well represented by Jesse Rosenzweig, our CTO and co-founder. Check out his Portland Business Journal Forty under 40 spotlight video.

Case Study: MTV Wants its Multiscreen Video

MTV has pioneered new online technology since video killed the radio star. With a young, internet savvy audience craving video everywhere, MTV needed a high-performance, flexible video solution that could push its vast amount of network content to online outlets like MTV.com. After receiving recommendations from industry colleagues, MTV deployed Elemental® Live to format content destined for online delivery. MTV now uses Elemental Live to encode high-profile, public facing live events. In this case study, we look at the reasons MTV picked Elemental Live including:

superior picture quality

high density video encoding

flexibility for on-site production and rack-mounted operations

Behind the music, Elemental Live delivers the diverse video content of the network ranging from one-on-one interviews to large tent-pole events like the MTV Video Music Awards. With Elemental Live powering the streaming for its popular shows and large-scale events, MTV gives its viewers every opportunity to tune in on the connected device of their choice. Due to the encoder’s sheer density, publishing a higher number of adaptive bit rate streams makes video delivery to end users that much smoother. The advantages available to MTV with Elemental Live have sent older encoding equipment into semi-retirement. Now, Elemental gear ensures that MTV’s multiscreen video offerings best complement the network’s coverage on its standard broadcast channel. Read the MTV case study here.

4K Ultra HD - The Next Big Thing This Holiday Season

This week, Elemental debuted newly-produced, complimentary 4K test clips for general purpose use. Ultra HD, generally captured at a resolution of 3840 x 2160, is on the immediate horizon and poised to enter the mainstream. Standardized last summer, 4K video has four times more pixels —and is four times the resolution — of the 1080p high definition display format. 8 million pixels provide a lot of detail! Before we know it, we’ll be viewing sports and other widely distributed video content in glorious 4K Ultra HD.

Here at Elemental, we noted the current lack of quality 4K test content and decided to take matters into our own hands. We picked the best of the best video test clips and recreated them using a RED® Epic 4K camera. Not only are these sequences fun to watch, we hope that they will be a useful resource for those testing their own video processing systems. These clips are available for download here.

How did we go about recreating these videos? We assembled the sets at Elemental, recruited the actors—most of the talent proudly office-grown— and turned part of our downtown Portland headquarters into a video studio. Each classic test clip was watched hundreds of times and no detail was too small to make note of and discuss. For off-site sets and shooting, we were particularly blown away by the community’s willingness to help make this project a reality. Special thanks go out to Lorentz Bruun Construction and the United States Coast Guard Station in Portland.

Shooting with the RED® Epic camera was an especially miserable task for our talented cameraman...just kidding! He was like a kid on Christmas morning as he excitedly described the capabilities of the camera to anyone interested. We hope you enjoy watching these clips as much as we enjoyed producing them. Happy holidays!

Elemental Webinar Dec. 18: Multiscreen Goes Mainstream

While many technology trends turn out to be short-lived, multiscreen video consumption is different. In a few short years, multiscreen video has emerged as a significant global trend on par with the shifts toward digital or HD video in previous decades. Increasing consumer demand for instantaneous OTT access to video is the catalyst for innovation in the video industry. Pay TV operators, content programmers, and studios are all scaling their infrastructure to meet these needs as multiscreen goes mainstream.

Join video industry experts for a thorough exploration of the challenges and opportunities posed by the global demand for multiscreen video distribution. During this session you will learn:

• what market trends are telling us about subscriber demand in the U.S. and abroad;
• what early adopters learned through the execution of media everywhere strategies;
• what must be done to cost-effectively satisfy mass market requirements, an
• what can be done to effectively monetize on the multiscreen investments.

Speakers:

Michelle Abraham, senior analyst, Multimedia Research Group
Tom Morrod, director of consumer and media technology, IHS
Keith Wymbs, VP, marketing, Elemental Technologies
Moderated by Fred Dawson, editor, ScreenPlays

Today, Elemental welcomes Sujal Patel to its board of directors and Elemental leadership team. Sujal is the founder of Isilon Systems, a leader in scale-out storage, where he variously led as president, CEO and chief technology officer since its inception in 2001. Sujal knows rapid business growth in the midst of technological transformation. His vision of network-attached storage (NAS) became the seed of Isilon, which he grew from an innovative startup to a public company and eventually sold to EMC for $2.25 billion.

Prior to founding Isilon, Sujal acted in various engineering roles at RealNetworks. In addition to serving on the Elemental board, he serves on the board of ExtraHop Networks, a Seattle-based startup that supplies network-based application performance management solutions. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Maryland at College Park. He also knows the value of intellectual property and holds a number of patents and pending patents, including those for the Isilon OneFS™ distributed file system.

When he is not building start-ups into billion dollar enterprises, Sujal spends his time mentoring other entrepreneurs, speaking about startup experiences, and devoting time to his growing family. Elemental is thrilled to have an individual with Sujal's knowledge and passion taking a seat on our board.

As we welcome Sujal, it is with deep gratitude that we thank Bob Greenberg for his five years of service on the Elemental board of directors. Elemental’s founding team first got to know Bob in 1999 at Pixelworks, where he was a co-founder. After leaving Pixelworks, Bob led the Oregon Angel Fund’s investment in Elemental, representing the company’s first external investor. From there he played a key role in driving Elemental’s Series A financing with Voyager Capital and General Catalyst Partners, and has provided many thoughtful technical insights as a company Director. We wish him the very best.

While Portland is no stranger to clouds or high tech, the cloud computing field is vast and decentralized; the best way to learn about what’s going on in a rapidly evolving field is to ask the experts. Right now, technical knowledge is spread across more than 90 user groups in the greater Portland area. To build community and connect key learnings, next week we kick off PDXCloud, a monthly meet-up of programmers interested in all aspects of working with cloud-based services. The group helps networking and knowledge transfer in the growing tech community, welcomes developers at all skill levels, and reflects the growing presence of companies in the region that are developing software services for the cloud. Join us at Elemental on November 14 for two great talks:

Jesse Rosenzweig, CTO and Co-founder of Elemental, will talk about leveraging graphics processing units (GPUs) in Amazon Web Services

Jeremy Wagner-Kaiser, Engineering Lead at Cloudability, will give an overview of different cloud service offerings

Future PDXCloud meeting topics include working with vendors such as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, Rackspace, etc., working with open-source implementations such as OpenStack, and developing cloud-based services, sites, and tools in both vendor-specific and vendor-agnostic ways. Come help shape the conversation; we look forward to seeing you.

PDXCloud Group Meeting

Wednesday, November 14
Doors open: 6:30 pm
Presentations: 7:00 pm

Elemental Technologies
225 SW Broadway, Suite 600
Portland, OR 97205

Each year, Streaming Media magazine identifies the one hundred companies that matter most in online video. Last week, Elemental was named to the 2012 Streaming Media 100 for the second consecutive year. Streaming Media’s panel of judges separated the stalwarts from the upstarts, identifying the companies "that continue to innovate and grow not just their customer base but the industry as a whole." To be certain, it’s an honor to be included, but what does that mean – to matter?

To the readers, it is a reminder: vote. The power to rank and recommend these companies lies in the Streaming Media Reader’s Choice Awards. Vote before October 15, and remember to confirm your vote when Streaming Media sends an email verification. Elemental is nominated for four awards including:

Encoding Software (Enterprise Class)

Hardware Encoder (On Demand)

Hardware Encoder (Live)

Multi-Screen/OTT Solution for Content Publishers

To the editors, it is a map. These broadcasters, content publishers, and related service providers build the world of sports, news and entertainment media. All roam the streaming video landscape.

To the nominee, it is a cheer. Elemental wins with each customer we connect to next. With that, we hope to see you next at Streaming Media West, October 30-31, in Los Angeles, where we will be speaking about Best Practices for Migrating to a Cloud-Based Encoding Platform (like Elemental Cloud). If you can’t make it to the show, perhaps we can meet at another industry event coming up soon.

Finally, to this blog, your attention makes it matter. Thank you.

Inc. 500 Ranks Elemental Second-Fastest Growing Software Company in America

Every year Inc. magazine ranks America’s 500 fastest growing private companies. In 2012, Elemental secured the #1 spot in Oregon, the #2 position in the software segment nationally, and the #52 overall rank on Inc.'s comprehensive and prestigious list. From 2008 - 2011, Elemental grew revenue 4,518%, and supplied clients including HBO, Disney and Comcast with the tools to stream video to smart phones, tablets, and computers. In the most demanding application yet, Elemental products medaled in video performance by delivering up to 24 live streams to 55 million online viewers for the BBC during the London 2012 Olympics this summer. Eurosport, Terra, and CTV also used Elemental products to stream live and on-demand Olympic video to more than 70 countries.

“We are extremely honored to be named one of America’s fastest growing private companies on the Inc. 500 list,” said Sam Blackman, CEO and co-founder of Elemental. “From 2008 to 2011, Elemental was fortunate to grow significantly in a challenging economy, thanks to an extremely talented, dedicated team and a rapidly growing market. Along with positive feedback from our customers, this ranking validates the team’s hard work and we are more excited than ever about the future of Elemental and the IP video industry.”

In a related Inc. article, Anthony Wood, founder of Roku, stated that “There’s more innovation happening in TV right now than probably any time in history.” Elemental is at the forefront of this change. Wood predicts that in 2016, most people will watch television through the Internet instead of cable, satellite or over-the-air. To get there, service providers, content programmers, and broadcasters need solutions like Elemental Live and Elemental Server to process and encode video for IP networks.

Customer applications highlight the multiscreen video revolution that propels Elemental. Analyzing audience behavior, the BBC noted viewers watching Olympics events throughout the day on devices targeted by Elemental. News providers such as ESPN and ABC News deliver video to mobile phones that captures eyes during mass-transit morning commutes. Sports, television programming and live events stream over the Internet to avid viewers at computers throughout the day. Original content available through HBO GO and Comcast Xfinity make for compelling bedtime stories on tablets at night. In a non-stop entertainment environment streamed across the world’s time zones and languages, Elemental products lay the foundation for the new vision of television service in video on demand, IPTV, and live mobile video.
