Mozilla announced a new component in Firefox that will significantly speed up the browser’s JavaScript performance (available in Firefox 3.1 alpha-stage built).

Called TraceMonkey, the component is a Just-In-Time (JIT) JavaScript compiler that will eventually replace Firefox’s current SpiderMonkey JavaScript compiler. The new compiler can improve JavaScript performance by up to a factor of seven, and with more speed improvements down the road. For Mozilla JavaScript is increasingly important, not only because of more-demanding sites, but because much of the Firefox browser itself is coded in JavaScript.

Visit – Brendan Eich’s blog “Brendan’s Roadmap Updates” for more details. http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/roadmap/archives/2008/09/tracemonkey_update.html

Brendan Eich is the creator of the JavaScript programming language and Chief Technology Officer at the Mozilla Corporation

Netscape originally developed a scripting language for use in its browsers, calling it LiveScript. Java being an internet buzzword at that time, for marketing reasons they renamed the scripting language to JavaScript. Brendan Eich (born 1961) is the creator of the JavaScript programming language. Now he is the Chief Technology Officer at the Mozilla Corporation.

Microsoft implemented its own version of JavaScript and called it JScript.

Netscape, Microsoft and others started standardizing the scripting language, using the ECMA standardizing organisation (http://www.ecma-international.org/) for that. Thus the language standard is now called ECMA Script.

ECMA standard is only about the core language, with data and objects like numbers, strings, booleans, Object, Array, Function, Date, Math, but NOT about application specific objects like browser specific objects (document, window, links, images etc).

The core features of Netscape’s JavaScript and Microsoft’s JScript are pretty much compliant with the ECMA Script standard, but the application specific objects like the browser DOM (Document Object Model) and the server object model differ, slightly less with time.

Looking for a way to maintain documentation for JavaScript-based project? jGrouseDoc is a tool that allows generation of API documentation from the comments in the source code and does it in the most flexible way.

The tool allows you to document all the necessary constructs that you might need – not only functions and variables, but also classes, interfaces, namespaces, packages and others. And it does not matter at all which JavaScript frameworks are being used – you can document your code the way you want it, not the way it is being imposed by a framework or a tool.

jGrouseDoc produces highly customizable output – you can either apply your own look and feel via CSS to one of the existing themes or create your own via XSL transformations.

Note that jGrouseDoc is implemented as an ANT task, so it could be easily integrated into your existing build processes or it could be used as a standalone tool.
