I live in a two seasons location, I do not experience any such thing as winter here in Indonesia. So I think hard rain is the closest thing to winter I can shoot for this week photo challenge, doh.

I hope next week photo challenge would be something global/general, so every photographer – located anywhere in the world – can participate.

Kerak telor (English: Egg crust) is a Betawi traditional spicy omelette dish in Indonesian cuisine. It is made from glutinous rice cooked with egg and served with serundeng (fried shredded coconut), fried shallots and dried shrimp topping. It is considered as a snack and not as a main dish. The vendors of kerak telor are easily the most ubiquitous during annual Jakarta Fair and it has also become a must-have menu item for visitors at the event. (quoted from the wiki)

Each of the portion is made by order. The kerak telor vendor puts a small amount of ketan (glutinous rice) on a small wok pan and heats it on the charcoal fire. Add a duck egg, some spices and mix it. The dish is fried on a wok without any cooking oil so the omelette will stick on the wok and enable to put it upside down straight against charcoal fire until it is cooked. The spicy serundeng (sweet grated coconut granule) with ebi (dried shrimp) and fried shallots are sprinkled upon the omelette.

The history of Kerak Telor is not very clear, but a vendor* says it was made by Chinese Betawi. It was only scrambled eggs with rice. Then locals added more spices, salt, pepper, dried shrimp and coconut to match their tastes and that’s the recipe we eat today.

In the Colonial era, kerak telor was a privileged food. It was served in big parties held by colonial government as well as rich Betawi. The recipe as well as the profession as kerak telor vendor had been passed from generation to generation.

Accompanied by a cup of java coffee is the best way to enjoy kerak telor.

Unfortunately, the popularity of kerak telor fades away. It’s not easy to find kerak telor outside Jakarta Fair event. I was just lucky to have this Betawi heritage during the Scomdex event in Surabaya. I asked the vendor, Pak Joyo, where can I find him after Scomdex? He said he does not sell kerak telor here in Surabaya. But he gave me his phone number, so I can contact him if only someday I wish to enjoy kerak telor again.

Malls have their own way of year end holiday season celebration: Xmas decors in every corners and sale in stores…

This was my breakfast, a pair of twin sausage bread and milk tea. But I don’t always have these every morning, some other days I have instant noodle, or just a cup of coffee and RSS feed.

Haha, this week photo challenge is quite challenging – or I should say amusing. Anyway, these are my interpretation for “windows”.

I was too tired to hunt anything hidden – then I found this, a space behind the curtains for moslems to pray in the Scomdex venue, on the second floor of Jatim Expo, Surabaya.
