A new study recently published by in Software - Practice and Experience details a systematic literature review investigating empirical evidence about the UML, concluding that "[d]espite indications that a number of problems exist with UML models, researchers tend to use the UML as a 'given' and seem reluctant to ask questions that might help to make it more effective."

Louis Major, a PhD student at Keele University, is currently investigating innovative methods that can be used in the teaching of computer language programming and has produced a protocol for a systematic literature review of the use of robotics in this area.

A new study, extending a previously reported tertiary study is now available at Science Direct. The study has uncovered an additional 35 SLRs, reflecting increased adoption in software engineering research.

Digital Libraries and Search Engines for Software Engineering Research: An Overview

The aim of this document is to provide informal information relating to the major search engines and digital libraries that are frequently used by the software engineering research community. The details provided are particularly focussed towards the needs of evidence-based researchers performing systematic literature reviews but the details may be useful to researchers performing any form of literature survey. Where the information is available, information is provided relating to the resources indexed by each digital library or search engine, and other relevant information concerning the searching facilities provided. It is intended that this document will be updated periodically with information relating to different electronic databases or search engines, or as new information is discovered about the databases already covered.

New Protocols Added

Three new protocols have been added to the website on the subjects of "Agile Software Development", "Systematic Review of Within- and Cross-Company Estimation Models" and "Systematic Literature Review of Motivation in Software Engineering". As always, these protocols are useful guides for anyone seeking to perform an evidence-based study or a replication study.
