Ok, so the title may prove a little misleading. While I know many of you will be thinking about how to coat the stem and use it for beating a play partner, that’s not my intent (this time).

Someone asked me recently if it was possible to Love within the BDSM community. Before saying “DUH!” (and using my best Homer Simpson-style expression) I actually put my brain into action and kept the mouth shut…for a brief moment. That’s because, of course it’s possible to love within the bounds of Alternative Lifestyles just as it is in any other relationship. Being in Love isn’t a Taboo despite what some may tell you. Love within BDSM is a wonderful thing. Sure, I can play without Love, but the associated trust, the extra intensity, the willingness to communicate more freely is SO much more fulfilling long term!

Do we need Love to explore, learn, grow and play with others as we explore our roles and Self expression through Kink? Nope, it’s not required at all, but there’s still a level of connection to your play partners which accompanies the energy exchange we experience. For a lot of people, that is simply enough. Then again, you may just find Someone(s) who is/are Special, and want to devote more time specifically to them; exploring each other’s desires, needs and bodies more fully. That won’t necessarily mean you have to give up other relationship dynamics though. Thats the beauty of Communication and trust. What do you each want? Are you going to be monogamous? Are you secure enough to allow your partner(s) play with others? Are you and you partner able to fulfill all your needs within your immediate relationship?

Which brings me nicely to another, rather important point. Some people may tell you that your current partner cannot get you to where you need/want to be. They may even suggest you leave them in order to achieve your full potential. While I can appreciate that is true on some levels, my inbuilt detector is charging for a cry of “BULLSHIT!!”. When someone, or maybe a group of someones, tell you that, ask them why. My guess is that you’ll get several answers but you’ll need to decide if they really do want you to grow and actually care about you (for example if your play partner is dangerously unskilled), or do they have more devious motives hidden under the guise of mentoring you ‘personally’ or I have a ‘friend’ who would be perfect to get you X-skill set/push your limits towards ‘improvement’. Ask yourself if they may actually be attempting to recruit you so they can just fuck your brains out without being the bad-guys who go behind your partners back. I understand, that while I may not be able to get a current partner/playmate “there” right now by myself, I know someone who can help Us achieve that! There is a huge difference between doing things within the relationship and negotiating to include others, versus having someone tear the relationship apart for their own goals under the premise of helping you achieve more.

I know within my relationships, past and present, that I haven’t always had the knowledge my partner needed, or wanted to explore. I’m still challenging myself and building skills and knowledge. What I have done is explore WITH my partners, so their needs are met at the same time as I build my skill sets and knowledge about aspects of Kink I may be currently weak on. That has always strengthened my relationships, and I remain on good terms with (almost all) past Lovers and play partners. It’s that very Love we share that has us wanting to help our partners develop and to provide for them. Providing for our partners is a very basic, almost primal need in our self. It also displays our commitment to our partners, no matter how many people are in the relationship.

So, can you Love a partner within the kink and alternative lifestyles? I say from personal experience, and with certainty, Abso-bloody-lutely!

Aren't you always amazed by that light in the eyes of the newly initiated when the truth hits home that some would use their love for kink to earn cold, hard cash?

I'm not. Not any more.

There isn't even a register when the tears fall and a quavering voice tells tales of use and abuse by some supposed leader(s).

"Do you mean not all intentions are good and pure?"

Nope.

Like all of life, the predators are out and they're earning your skin and taking your money! How can you possibly protect yourself? Hide? Run? Stay in your homes and hide behind your father's petticoats?

Nah, that's not necessary. Just stop being a bunch of gullible dumbshits!

You have a vast potential to become commerce to a great many people. Whether it's by the dollar itself or by body count, you *can* be kept, sold, bought, traded, used and discarded if you are not aware. Just stop being stupid! It's really that simple folks.

If you meet someone who is too good to be true, they probably are.

If someone (or some group) tells you they are the Only Way, the source of knowledge, the true path to the community at large? Bullshit!

If you feel something is not right and that feeling is telling you to get out? Listen and act!

If you are told that love and kink can never go hand in hand? Fuck.That – then get the fuck away from the vapid moron who had the gall to waste the breath with that statement.

If a person or group tries to split you from your partner in order to teach you the "true" way of deeper kink? Well, does that sound right? Really?

If you give money to a person or group and the use of that money is not transparent? (e.g. Where does it go, how is it used, are the "books" open to the membership at large?)

If money for events is supposed to go to charities or specific causes, ask for proof! If you are denied that proof, well, don't give them your money!

If you are asked to provide a service for a local Community event that will be raising/charging money, ask for a modest fee – do not do it for free (do not be excessive with your fee, just have your expenses covered!). If they will not pay, do not do it!

If you are providing materials to that group that is your Intellectual Property, PROTECT YOURSELF and your property! Have contracts and pens in hand. If those agreements are broken, pursue the matter legally.

These are only some of the lessons I (and others) have learned through hard knocks.

Pay attention and sharpen up.

1) How did you get hooked into shooting the Fetish scene in Osaka.

1- I starting shooting video here in ’95, fashion shows, hair makeup shows, bands, etc…and in 2000 a friend introduced me to a guy doing gothic parties. I started shooting at his parties and soon other people who organize s/m event noticed me shooting there. The gothic guy introduced those people to me and I started shooting the s/m events and making DVD’s of their events. Actually in the beginning there weren’t any DVD’s, I made video tapes, later I started making DVD’s. I was one of the few foreigners shooting video seriously back then and so I stood out, plus I was using the Canon XL-1 at the time, a huge camera so that really made me stand out.

2) Were you doing this in the States? Or is this an interest born overseas?

2-back in San Francisco where I lived before I came to Japan I was working in a commercial photo lab, doing dark room work and also working with color stat cameras. Didn’t have an interest in fetish or s/m back then, knew nothing about it. It’s after I came to Japan that I started shooting the s/m events that I got interested in it.

3) You describe yourself as a “Fetishist” does this extend beyond the lens? If so, how?

3-don’t practice s/m, and the closest thing they had on the profile menu was fetishist. I like corsets and the way it makes a woman look. When shooting the s/m events at the beginning I met a woman who designs corsets. I started shooting photos/videos of her fashion shows and we ended up making a 5 disc DVD. I shot most of the models on her site. We went together to Paris where she did a fashion show at Nuit Demonia, the big s/m event every december.

4) In your own words, what makes the Osaka scene better than Tokyo? (Something I can quote that you’re comfortable with).

4-the scenes are about the same, there might be more parties in Tokyo because there are more people but in general living in Osaka is better. Not as crowded, the people are friendlier. In Osaka we are proud to have our own scene apart from Tokyo. Lots of people have moved there to make more money or get a better job, those of us who stay in Osaka want to make something on our own. Sure, if I moved to Tokyo, there is a lot of things there already set up or I can join something already established but the few parties we have here are special because it’s not a monthly or every two months kinda thing like in Tokyo.

One quote might be Tokyo is the capital but Osaka is the heart and soul of Japan. We also have Kyoto and Kobe nearby and those places are very cool also. My friends work at an s/m lounge/bar in Kyoto and so on the way to their bar you can see the maiko-the apprentice geisha walking around, then you go upstairs and see women in corsets and fishnets, see some shibari action, its great.

And our food really is better. Osaka is known as having great food. Plus it is much better being the underdog. I hear from friends about their small, overpriced shitty apartments and if you want a bigger, cheaper place, my friend live like 40 min. by train from Tokyo and commuting is hell for him. I also like the fact that I can ride my bike easily across Osaka, Cruising around on a bike is a great way to see the city. Everyone here rides a bike. That’s another thing, before you come here make sure you bring good walking shoes, you will do a lot of walking around. My sister came here and the first week she was here her feet were swollen and hurting. She drives everywhere back in Texas, here you do a ton of walking. I am used it to now, sometimes I walk home when I go out to my friend’s club, easily a 1 hour walk, just put on my iPod and walk, great exercise.

5) Last, what’s the greatest misconception Westerners have about the Japanese S/M, Fetish, Kink world?

5-I went out with a friend last night and was telling her about the happening bars. She was surprised by what goes on here. She is from England and she imagined the shy, quiet polite Japanese but behind closed doors, they are some pretty wild people. One thing that is different here is there is no influence from Christianity. So sex is not seen as something dirty and shameful like in the west. Everyone does it and talking about it openly is no big deal. Also nudity is no big deal either, there are usually some women topless on tv when they have a hotsprings scene on some soap opera and when I first came her there were lots of shows after 11pm that had lots of tits and ass, they had porn dvd reviews, mini contest showing who had the biggest tits, all kinds of softcore stuff. It’s not as common now on TV. But once you look behind the closed doors you find a lot of parties happening in some plain looking buildings.

There are all kinds of places where you can get what you want if you have the money. Fetish bars, s/m bars, delivery services where you order a domme or submissive and you meet them at hotel and depending on the course you pay for, play for an hour or 90 min. or whatever. Like having a girl sit on your face and smother you, no problem, there is a delivery service for that. want a really big and fat japanese girl to play with, no problem. So lots of Japanese can get there kink on anytime they want for a fee and that leads to happier, stress free people. At least that is my theory.

The japanese are very normal in their day to day life, but once they get to their favorite bar or club, then they can get their kink on and be among their kink friends. At my friend’s bar last night there was a guy in his 50′s sitting in thong having some drinks by himself, totally normal at that bar, you can be who you want to be without being seen as abnormal. And in the japanese society everyone has to be normal and not stand out, especially in the business world of suits and ties. Thankfully Japan has a ton of these bars and clubs so people who are into that can access it anytime they want, not just at certain times when there is a big event and pretty much every city in Japan is like that, in the smaller cities there might be one fetish bar in town.

Look behind a closed door here in Japan and you will be surprised by what is going on.

As I'm editing the podcast bits, I can hear the chaotic nature last weekend held. When weather tried to hold us back, we drove forward and made our own fun (e.g. Sybian/Hitachi/Fisting play).

Summer arrived in the Beehive State with the blunt haste of a very late, very rude house guest; it had all the subtlety of a glass blast furnace on the verge of shatter. I hate it when seasons do that. Senile and elitist, self-important. It fried people marching in Pride. It turned my fair skin red as I readied our "Burn camper" for this weekend's festivities.

Hopefully that "thing" will be ready. If not we're going in a damn tent! Either way, we're going! I don't care.

The New Recorder

It's a Sony PCM-M10 Portable Digital recorder. I've done some comparisons to it's competition (for the price) and it pretty much takes them down. It even beats the H4n (and costs quite a bit less…not to mention its battery life!)

Future podcasts recorded at the "home base" will actually use this and our existing recorder run through the mixer…so a total of 4 mics, spread out a bit more. What does this mean? Improved sound.

Remote podcasting (using just 1 recorder) will use this device which will also mean MUCH better sound.

I don't talk about my birthday outside that close circle of traitors I call my friends (yes you're all traitors until my ass heals). This year that tradition of mopery (when you're 40 you are allowed to make up words…fuck off) breaks.

When I hit 30 I rode the rails of the Titanic, letting my dress flow careless in the wind. At 31 I was just another bloated floater amongst the flotsam. It's taken 9 years to rebuild…not just a career. I've had to rebuild everything. 41 will see the realization of some lifetime dreams and goals.

This year will also see more Sadist podcast, more growth of the DungeonPlace podcast (we had over 23,000 downloads in May…Thank You!!!) and a few other surprises.

At first read I had to hold off my own criticism of such reflection – I'm a cynical bastard by nature and subscribe heavily to the motto: "Let the buyer beware".

Then two cautions caught me.

I know Luna. She's got a good head on her shoulders and she's one I have spoken with and have sent friends to for advice.
I know several individuals who fit the "profiles" of whom she speaks in her own reflection.

My criticism backed away and I re-read. I scanned one section in particular.

Lastly I'd like to talk about the Holier than Thou type that seems to only confuse
the novices. These are the types that say, in a variety of ways, that the way they
do BDSM is better than someone elses and are quick to say that you must not be
submissive enough because xyz.

Bravo! Hell yes and Bravo!

It's so counter-educational and against what I
believe and teach on Submissive Guide. Every single person who engages in BDSM is
correct in how they engage in it. I love variety and enjoy hearing about what
works for one person (knowing it won't for me). It's what makes community so
wonderful to be a part of.

I believe in that last paragraph. I LOVE that last paragraph.

I have personally witnessed so many people ruined, disenchanted, robbed, swindled, raped, victimized, hurt and/or traumatized simply because an individual or group of individuals wanted "first pick" of the "newbies".

So, if you're looking at joining this Lifestyle and Community? Shop around.

It's a lot like religion…there are many who will promise you heaven and deliver hell.

Then there are those who will simply listen and deliver what you're looking for.

(For the record, I'm not advertising to be either one. But I'll at least give you honest answers.)

No tragedies have befallen, no unfortunate events came calling, no loss of interest tugged anyone away. We're all here, working, planning, doing, carrying on in the fashions we must in order to put vegetables in the crisper and cow in the frying pan.

On a slightly sly side-note, there are some scintillating affiliations taking place; the details of which will be unveiled soon.

Episode 26 of the DungeonPlace podcast (a VERY unusual episode, cast and created in a way we've never done before) will be online by Thursday. It will run about 30 minutes or so…but I promise you'll be happy to draw breath by the end.

Traditional Relationships

I've been married a few times…and, obviously, divorced a few times.

The post about Polyamory sparked a bit of a debate…and some attempts at abuse. But hey! That's what opinions are for, correct? Now it's time to turn the spotlight onto "Traditional" relationships.

Q: First, are they any better than non-traditional relationships?

A: Hell NO! Human beings have this incredible ability to destroy everything good and precious in their lives. We love instant gratification and can rationalize *anything*! Our "Traditional" relationships take a large part of this beating.

Q: Will God punish you or reward you for your choice in relationships?

A: Come on…PLEASE tell me you (as a reader of this blog and listener of the DungeonPlace podcast) don't give any credence to "God's" opinion when it comes to your happiness? You're considerations should be applied to the people (tangible people) in your life; don't worry about a bipolar old man in the sky.

Q: But the Bible says!….

A: The Bible is a great literary work…that is all. Don't take it literally.

Q: Divorce rates are going down now that we're focusing on "Traditional" relationships, right?

A: Divorce rates are going down in the U.S. – (CDC website), Cohabitation is climbing, success of these relationships is still about the same…although higher for people involved in a "marriage". So…if that's the case, why not just BLOW MARRIAGE OPEN TO ALL? (I'm just applying a model here).

This is opinion. All of it, with a few facts sprinkled in for good measure.

If "Traditional Marriages" are so great, why don't we all apply that "Tradidtional" model to other relationship types? Wouldn't that benefit us all?

Papa

At 3:44 pm yesterday (4/20/2010) I was staring at two monitors working with Cascading Style Sheets. Being at work, I missed several emails crossing under my radar. A few short miles west of me a good man, a friend and…well, in many ways a mentor, passed away. For a long couple of years he had suffered greatly, his passing from pain is a good thing…

…but it still just sucks.

DarlingEvil and I learned about Papa’s death last night after an evening with another friend who narrowly escaped death that morning. We cried, we talked, we made plans for our own deaths; a thing that seems to happen whenever that shadow passes close.

On Saturday we’ll attend his Wake. There will be tears. There will be a lot of laughter (and lifting of glasses). Papa was a beautiful man who taught me many, many things without having to say a word. He smiled, he brought joy, he had a gift of “letting go”.

Letting go was likely the most powerful thing I learned from him.

Stop worrying so much about what you look like from another’s perspective and simply accept your own reflection in the mirror every morning. When I met him I was both my own Master and my own slave. Pieces of me would beat the rest of me down to quivering submission. Those pieces were dark and hungry…they fed on pain, drama, cruelty and a bitter illness I couldn’t accept.

Our Community was suffering something similar. Factions fought, people struggled for power and climbed over anyone they could to attain it. When the shredding began Papa and Gryphon left the fight and started something different. With people like Kokodhem, Jodi and others, they formed an alternative that simply celebrated the JOY of BDSM…not the ritual.

To my shame, I thought it was a bit silly…fun, but silly.

It shows you how little I knew back then. I let myself get swallowed in the fighting and walked away for a few years.

Papa and Gryphon moved, I rejoined the Community, Papa got sick and Gryphon brought him “home”.

It wasn’t until last night, 1 am, that I realized how that man had changed me.

I learned to “LET GO”. Rejoining the Community, seeing that the thing he had started, the thing I thought “silly”, had grown into an entity that healed a great rift. My own attitude was different…I liked my reflection. I loved who I was and who I am…I laugh more. I let things go…and I have more joy in doing what I love.

Well, now I’m at work…office door closed, tears in my eyes.

I think I’ll check in on my Team and head back home.

I’ll take some time, let go of this loss and start celebrating the man who did so much for me…without ever knowing just how deep that touch went (something else I’ll have to reconcile in time).

When Things Blow Up…

I lost an old, dear friend this weekend.

…my `96 Jeep Cherokee finally went to a place I could not follow. What does this have to do with BDSM? This was a vehicle that carted around untold amounts of gear, transported DE and I to many, many parties, gatherings, photo shoots, nasty-evil-borderline-illegal places and served as mobile sex platform that left me with scars.

The Green Death is dead. May it have another life elsewhere.

The worst bit, however, is WHEN it happened. The day I was to help Sythen with her performance in the Rocky Mountain Olympus contest.

She won. I’d like to think she won because I was not present to screw up her scene.

I know, however, that she won because Sythen is one of the most knowledgeable, kind (that’s relative!) and incredible Leather Folk I have ever met.

So, things may blow up, but even that can leave some amazing after effects.

Congratulations my friend.

I’ve watched, carefully, over the years to see what happens in the poly relationships I’ve witnessed. What I’ve seen has been tragic (with 2 or 3 exceptions)…and I really only know 1 family that’s managed to pull off a “Long-Term” poly relationship.

A few others were great for a year or two before some form of amicable split. Most just went down in flames and took a lot of victims with them.

My question here is simple:

“When do you call Poly a personal failure and move on?”

“Do you just keep on trying? Or redefine and create relationships of a different type?”

I got a turn on the bench last Saturday night. @poplopo (Misha The Rat) agreed to apply a custom "High Voltage" sign to my right thigh…via her mad Cell Popping skills.
