The second book in Mary Borsellino’s Wolf House series, Roads and Crosses follows two of the hunters as they navigate the aftermath of the shattering events of Origins and Overtures. Already prone to anger and self-doubt, Lily’s fight has become a fight against her own dark thoughts just as much as it’s a fight against the vampire gangs. And Will’s clinical, detached approach to vampire hunting has always helped him in the past, but now it threatens to cut him off from his emotions and his friends completely. And if they can’t save themselves, what good are they to Jay, Rose, and Bette?

Our first holiday romance from the talented Rachel V. Olivier. The only thing Holly likes as much as being in a band is being in a relationship. She just can’t turn a cute guy down, and she has the disastrous dating history to prove it. On the eve of her band’s biggest performance, a Christmas festival raising funds for the homeless, Holly meets two intriguing men, but even she can’t date both at the same time. So now the question is: which one? It takes some special holiday magic, a dash of music, and a little help from her friends to figure it out, but Holly’s heart wins out in the end.

Kinlea Keeper is a very nice but sickly boy sent to the country to die. Except, of course, that he doesn’t. Instead, he’s taught to “keep” Haneth’s End, a lovely pocket of magic existing parallel to the real world. He comes to reailze that there’s something wrong in Haneth’s End, and possibly with the other Keeper’s demesnes. If he has to face witches, goblins, and fairy reels to find out what’s gone wrong and set it right, he will. Death, his old friend, is setting a place for him at her table. Hopefully he’ll be able to miss this appointment as handily as he has the first. This is an engaging story that readers of C. S. Lewis should enjoy.

Sheehan’s tale of a steampunk samurai and his sometimes magical companions is a truly enjoyable read. Hikage, a noble Samurai, is convinced to join a conspiracy against his lord, a vicious man who cares nothing for his people. He wields the sword that strikes the man down, but he is startled by the master’s daughter, and strikes her down as well. Mourning the death of this innocent girl and repudiated by his co-conspirators, he throws his sword in the River Han and sets out on the road with no particular destination in mind. While traveling, he meets a mysterious woman who refuses to leave him alone until he agrees to be her bodyguard to a distant city. It is only after he agrees that he discovers that her eventual goal is magical, and that her enemies are also his own. They must travel together by foot, mechanical horse, and dirigible across the country and back again, searching for a means to save the empire with their enemies in pursuit, and some of their enemies aren’t human. If they fail, it isn’t just their lives at stake, but their entire way of life.

These days, the Drollerie Press forums practically echo with emptiness. The only people who wander through are two DP authors, and we really only haunt one thread (Word Associations). This is very sad, because the forums have enormous potential for community fun! Thus, I have hatched a devious plan to kick-start new forum activity, and it involves (GASP~!) a free book. So, here’s the contest scoop, and hopefully both the contest and the prize will be fun for all:

Anyone who, between now and November 30, A) Posts in the DP forum (you may need to register to do so, if you are not already a member. When you register, please also send an e-mail to drollerie_interact@yahoo.com with the words “forum name” in the header and the name you registered in the body of the text) and B) Guesses one of my top two favorite forum posts as DokodemoElisa will be entered in a drawing to win one of two copies of Kinlea Keeper OR (if you can’t wait until the end of November to read Kinlea Keeper) a copy of the Curse, the second book in the series, which will be coming out by February.

HINT: NEITHER of my favorite posts are posted in the Word Association thread.

You can post your guesses along with your forum name as a reply to this post or e-mail it to me at dokodemoelisa@yahoo.com. Happy forum-going! -E.G.D.

Our chat poll seems to indicate that Saturday or Sunday evenings are best times to chat. Since the last Saturday of this month is Halloween, we’ll be chatting on Sundays starting November 1st at 9PM EST. Our next chat will be Sunday, November 29, at 9PM, and the last Sunday of the month thereafter, unless it falls on a holiday that would normally include a turkey coma or otherwise make it difficult for people to attend. Then we’ll improvise.

Sunday, November 1st, come prepared to win a copy of one of our upcoming releases (we’ll be talking about them more in the next few days), and to chat with our authors about books, or whatever else strikes your fancy.

Hey all, and welcome to the October 2009 edition of the Drollerie Blog Tour! This month’s theme is the lesser-known holiday of Sweetest Day, and we’re taking the opportunity to touch upon the general theme of what the day stands for: those who are encouraging to us. Some of us will be addressing this in terms of our writing, and others? It’ll be our characters.

And without further ado…

Sarah Avery is hosting Heather Ingemar’s post about how her first writing mentor helped her get serious

Nora Fleischer has my own little character vignette about a moment of encouragement in the early life of my heroine from Faerie Blood

On Meredith Holmes’ blog, Heather Parker talks about how a pair of cats and one well-timed remark from her husband gave rise to Middlewitch

Jessica Howe has a guest post from John Rosenman, who wants to give credit to several people who have helped his writing career

Imogen Howson is hosting Catherine Schaff-Stump, who describes her reaction to Sweetest Day

Heather Ingemar has a visit from Fraser Sherman, who sings the praises of people who may surprise you–or not, if you’re a writer yourself

I’ve got Sarah Avery, who tells us about one of the nicest things her husband ever did to assist her writing

At Heather Parker’s blog, Nora Fleischer gives thanks to the first author who ever gave real praise to her work

John Rosenman hosts Meredith Holmes, who thanks several people important to her and her writing efforts

Catherine Schaff-Stump has a post from Jessica Howe, who wants to tell us about the land where her muse has gone to play

And last but not least, Fraser Sherman hosts hosts Heather Ingemar, who finds that Sweetest Day has something in common with her own writing efforts

Thanks again all for reading all our posts. Which, we daresay, is all part of the theme this month!

We had a little glitch in the bookstore, and the sale shut down last night. As a result, we’ve extended the sale in our bookstore through Sunday.

We test all the books in all the formats we offer before uploading them to the bookstore, but we’ve had buyers tell us that downloading the books with Safari on a Mac sometimes causes them to come out garbled. I don’t know how that’s even possible, but please try downloading with Firefox if you run into that problem, or email me at dfisher@drolleriepress.com and I’ll send you the book immediately.

Unfortunately, the sale wasn’t picked up by Fictionwise at all, or by Amazon, at least for some people. We can’t control how they price the works, we can only tell them the sale price and give them the opportunity to offer it to you. If you’re a Mobipocket buyer, the sale will be available there through the end of the day today. If you buy the book at Drollerie Press and would prefer a different format, or want to read it on more than one device, you’re welcome to do so. If a book isn’t available in your preferred format, let us know and we’ll have it formatted for you within 24 hours.
