My best wishes to you to continue the brilliant work and may Apollo Bangalore
With warmest personal wishes,
Dr. Prathap C. Reddy
Chairman, Apollo Group of Hospitals

Dear Dr Kumaresh, Thank you for conducting the procedure adenotonsillectomy on my five year old son. My son remembers you daily in his prayers.

I guess every mother wants her child to be treated in the best of best hands and hospital. Though our stay in hospital was very short but it was a memorable one with highest quality of care and standard.

My son had been suffering from recurrent tonsillitis since past two and half years and each time taking a course of antibiotics at least four to five times in a year. Besides that he had difficulty in breathing at sleep and his snoring always was a real concern for us. We decided to undertake the procedure in India and decided to consult Dr Kumaresh who came with high recommendation. There is no snoring or throat pain now -a- days. Thank you once again. Neurotology and Skull base

Neurotology : It is a clinical sub specialty within the field of ENT, which focuses on the neurology and neurosurgery of the ear. This specialty is concerned with the diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment of hearing loss, balance disorders (dizziness), ringing noise in the ears (tinnitus), the facial nerve (nerve of facial movements), temporal bone and related structures such as the lateral skull base (housing the inner ear structures) among others.

Skull Base: The "skull base" refers that area of the head that the brain rests upon. It is the connection between the brain and the spinal cord. Contained within the skull base are the eye orbits, ear canals, two carotid arteries, 12 cranial nerves and the blood drainage system of the brain. The area is extremely difficult to navigate - due to the numerous vital and critical structures that enter and exit the base of the brain. It contains many of the nerves responsible for hearing, seeing and face movements. Additionally the area is densely packed with blood vessels that keep the brain supplied with oxygen and the nutrients necessary for its functioning. Skull base diseases are a group that grows along different areas under the brain or within the bottom part of the head. Although most of these diseases are not cancerous, their location close to the brain and the steps the surgeon must take to remove the disease can cause significant problems leading to temporary or everlasting loss of function of one or more of the cranial nerves.
Any surgery in this area is very complex and requires the closest co-operation between Neurotologist (ENT surgeon with fellowship training in Neurotology)and neurosurgeons.

Following is a list of the most common locations for skull base tumors.

Sinonasal Tract: The sinonasal tract consists of the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses which form a major portion of the bone skeleton of the face and the anterior or front part of the base of the skull.

Nasopharynx: Behind the nasal cavity and above the soft palate (the back portion of the roof of the mouth) lies the nasopharynx. This is the top portion of the pharynx, which is the passageway that runs from behind the nose and mouth down to the esophagus. The nasopharynx sits right under the middle portion of the skull base.

Clivus: Deep within the head is the floor of the cranial cavity, which contains the brain. The bone in the central portion of this cranial floor is known as the clivus. Access to this region is often obtained through the mouth or through the nasal cavity and sinuses, thus avoiding external scarring.

Anterior Cranial Fossa: The front portion of the cranial floor is known as the anterior cranial fossa. The anterior cranial fossa includes the olfactory grooves where the sense of smell is perceived. The middle part of the anterior cranial fossa forms the roof of the nasal cavity.

Infratemporal Fossa: This is the space that lies behind the upper jaw and below the side wall of the skull. It contains several nerves that give sensation to the face, the muscles used for chewing, and several blood vessels, including the main vessels to the brain, namely, carotid artery and the jugular vein. Growths in this location can come from the ear, the salivary glands and the upper or lower jaw.

Parapharyngeal Space: To the side of the throat or pharynx is the parapharyngeal space. It contains the lowest four cranial nerves, which are involved with speech, swallowing and shoulder movement. It also contains the major blood vessels of the neck, such as the carotid artery and the jugular vein.

Temporal Bone: The temporal bone is the hardest bone in the body and has a very complex anatomy. The temporal bones contain the facial nerve and the organs deep within the ear that control hearing and balance (the inner ear). Large air-filled spaces are present in part of the temporal bone. The carotid artery passes from the neck through the temporal bone, and blood from the brain drains through a space underneath the temporal bone. The apex of the bony portion of the temporal bone is known as the petrous apex. The petrous apex is located close to several cranial nerves

Middle Cranial Fossa: The middle portion of the cranial floor is known as the middle cranial fossa. The middle cranial fossa supports the temporal lobes of the brain and forms the outer walls of the orbits. The bone of the middle cranial fossa separates the ear from the brain.

Cerebellopontine Angle. The cerebellopontine angle is the area between the cerebellum (the portion of the brain that controls coordination of movement), the pons (part of the central nervous system's brainstem) and the temporal bone. This space contains several cranial nerves.

Jugular Foramen. The jugular foramen is an opening in the skull base that contains several vital structures. Blood drains from the brain down to the jugular vein in the neck by passing through the jugular foramen. The lower cranial nerves IX, X and XI pass from the brain through the jugular foramen into the neck.

BAHA:

The system is surgically implanted and allows sound to be conducted through the bone rather than via the middle ear - a process known as direct bone conduction. A small titanium implant is implanted into the skull behind the ear where it osseointegrates with the living bone. An abutment is attached to the implant and a sound processor is clipped on. The sound processor can be worn or taken off at any time. The sound quality is greatly improved compared to traditional bone conducting hearing aids.
