In the summer of 2014, a crew of first-time film makers traveled to Iceland and shot Bokeh, an independent feature film. Some had production experience, others were raw beginners. All learned a lot about the process of making feature films. Doug will share key lessons he learned learned from pre-production, principal photography, post-production and paperwork; lots of paperwork.

So, if you do not know any veterans or are nervous to approach one, this is a great, simple way to do so.

I try to do the same thing when I see active duty military, particularly when in airports, as I assume they are headed to or coming back from a deployment and that might be when they need to hear it the most.

Facebook, Twitter and other social media need a “Hide Spoilers” setting/button/algorithm.

End users would select “Hide Spoilers” in their profile settings. Content creators would add the #spoilers hashtag to their content. In addition, users would have the ability to flag untagged content (specific posts, not full sites) as containing spoilers.

Social media providers would then simply hide flagged content in the user’s feeds. No content, pro or amateur, would ever be destroyed. Users could always reveal spoiler content if desired.

Thoughts?

Tonight, I spent the evening listening to retired fighter pilots share stories of their service. I’ve been so fortunate to have this experience many times over the last few years and it never gets old.

Never.

From the beginning, it struck me that, almost to a man, these folks are nothing like the stubborn, cocky, headstrong characters shown in most Hollywood films.

Confident and self-assured? Yes. Irreverent and funny? Absolutely. Characters of the first order? In their own way, almost every one.

Arrogant and self-absorbed? Never.

The serious stories are told with genuine reverence for their peers, their mission and their craft. The light-hearted stories are told with a heartfelt twinkle in their eyes and a childlike glee that is always mindful and present, but never sappy or nostalgic.

They understand they are gatekeepers of an important oral history and they take on that role with a passion and honesty that is wonderful to witness.

On nights like this, I remember why I became a storyteller and I smile.

Thanks to Neil Henderson for opening this particular door for me.
