Dog owners may get a lot out of having their furry friends around, but they also have to give a lot of care. Taking Poochy for a walk can almost seem like an outing with an infant: you have to take along the poop bags, the treats, the water dish and throw in a flashlight if you’re going out after dark.

The Smart Dog Leash is kind of like the diaper bag of the doggy world – or the Swiss Army knife if you aren’t fond of the baby analogy. It has everything you need to make your walk with your furry baby nice and relaxing. It includes all of the necessities mentioned above, plus the leash itself is retractable with an ergonomic handle. It even has a digital watch in the handle so you can see just how long you’ve been out on your adventure.

You’ll still have to bring your own water bottle to fill up Fido’s collapsible water bowl, but that’s a welcome change from having to gather everything before walking out of the door. Unfortunately for Mastiff lovers, this leash is only recommended for small to medium dogs.

Having cool, simple, modern furniture in your home is great, but there is the big problem of how to afford that furniture. One way, which has been popular with a certain breed of adventurous souls for a very long time, is to make it yourself. On HomeMade Modern, Ben Uyeda shows how to turn $5 worth of materials into a stool that looks like it cost 10 times as much.

The plans are simple and bare-bones: get a bucket, mix some concrete in it, stick dowels in, let it dry, and then pull out a finished stool. The instructions aren’t literally that simple, of course, but they are easy enough that even the novice DIYer could pull off this project with little to no frustration.

Like any good DIY project, this one is infinitely customizable. You can change the shape of the seat depending on the mold you use for the concrete; add an extra leg or some extra support for the legs; even add a splash of color. And although the project is called The $5 Bucket Stool, you can use it in just about any room as a small table, plant stand or bedside table.

It is inefficient and unsustainable to haul human waste back in from remote festivals and other places typically populated with port-a-potties. So why not use on-hand materials to make something simple and green?

Thus L’Uritonnoir by Faltazi which turns an everyday farm item into a urinal by means of simple funnels attached on various sides and connected via a loop running around the perimeter. The composted results can be recycled right back into the local land.

“An uritonnoir is a hybridisation of two everyday products, an urinal and a funnel (literally in french, “urinnoir” et “entonnoir”). This system is used either used in public spaces during festive events (slotted into round bales) or in private gardens (slotted into small straw bundles). L’Uritonnoir is an utensil filling a volume of straw (carbon) with urine (nitrogen) in order to compost it during a 6-12 month period and convert it into humus.”

The flat-pack design makes it easy to transport and deploy then clean or discard, minimizing waste and transit costs and making for easy assembly at events. A stainless-steel alternative is less portable but easier to clean and reuse. “The round bale stays and composts on-the-spot. Six months later the manure can be used by local farmers. The following year, it can be used as a giant planter to be enjoyed by new festival-goers !”

Picking up a ready meal from the supermarket for lunch always comes with a little tinge of guilt when you realize just how much packaging there is to be discarded. An amazing new type of biodegradable packaging could ease a lot of that guilt and give you a rather fun show to watch while you wait for lunch to cook.

The packaging, made from 100% bio-based and biodegradable materials, starts out as a compact, closed dish. Presumably the dish would be filled with an instant meal that needs only hot water and a few minutes to cook. After removing a small strip of protective material that encircles the bowl, you pour hot water into a hole on top – and that is when the magic happens.

Over a few minutes’ time, the small package opens and blooms into a bowl. The hole you previously poured water through can now serve as a convenient way to carry your ramen noodles to the breakroom table. The conceptual packaging was developed by Swedish company Innventia and designers Anna Glansén and Hanna Billqvist.

Going to an electronic music show can be a great experience if you really love the artist, but if you’re there to see a thrilling performance you might be disappointed. Most digital musicians, talented though they may be, don’t really move around much on stage during a live show.

Noticing this, Wesley Chau created a wearable drum machine called Drop the Beat that looks a bit like a bullet-proof vest. Hitting it in different places allows different sounds to play, much like a standard electronic drum machine. The main difference, of course, is that the performer gets to move around, interact with the audience and create a performance that is wholly unique each and every time.

As Chau encourages other people to use his vest and get the beats dropping left and right, he is amazed at the different interpretations come up with by different users. He hopes to get DJs and musicians into the vest to give it a shot. Who knows – some day musical clothing could be the norm and we’ll all walk down the street playing our own personal theme songs.
