Nearly every one of us looks into a mirror daily. The reflective surfaces are ever-changing due to objects and people moving in front of them and then away, but we can always count on seeing a somewhat-predictable image when we approach a mirror. Paulo J. Futre‘s mirrors, on the other hand, are anything but predictable.

Futre begins with a glass canvas and, rather than adding the reflective backing that makes a conventional mirror, he splashes the glass with a reflective paint. This invents unpredictable forms and shapes on the glass, in a way creating a mirror that is a painting. Or is that a painting that also happens to be a mirror?

The result of standing before one of these pieces can be surprising. We see a disjointed version of ourselves, one that perhaps reflects a conflicted inner human nature. The image is vague and incomplete because not every part of the picture is reflected.

According to Futre, the person standing in front of one of his Liquid Mirror Paintings is an important part of the artwork – but not the final part. The final piece of this sometimes-reflective, sometimes-transparent piece of art is the photographs and videos that capture that dialogue between the object and the person interacting with it.

These rolling pins aren’t just functional kitchen implements for rolling out pie crusts, they’re alternative design tools that enable amateur cooks to express themselves in a new way. ‘Rollware’ from the Piet Zwart Institute of Rotterdam is part of the ‘Altered Appliances’ project, which investigates how low-tech appliances can be repurposed to encourage creativity.

Rollware includes nine rolling pins with various shapes and patterns laser-cut into their wooden surfaces. The purpose? Making your own edible dishware. Four of the pins will create bowl and plate shapes in various sizes, while the others add textural visual interest.

These simple manual kitchen tools essentially comprise a small home fabrication system for the creation of edible pastry dishes.

Other edible dishes include a set of flour-based place settings by artist Andere Monjo and an edible cookie cup. The cool thing about ‘Rollware’ is you can keep churning out more, and experiment with adding different flavors and colors.

It is a small thing, but still, a strange moment when you have to bring your dripping-wet hands from the sink where they were freshly washed, and hover over at least a counter (if not the floor) on your way to the wall-mounted dryer or towel dispenser.

This combined design lets you skip a step and have less hardware to handle and hang as well – simply put your hands in front of the sensor to first get them wet, then dry them via forced air pushed through the same tubes.

It took tens of millions to develop the product, but the result is amazing: it spins up from 0 to 90,000 RPM in under a second, and pushes air through filters for a fully-clean experience, all part of a new line of leaner, cleaner, sleeker and eco-friendlier versions of old bathroom devices.

Most fixtures are finished works when you buy them – with some notable exceptions, like plant pots and decorative jars or other clear glassware.

That is essentially the starting point for Pani Jurek, who arrays minimalist single and double hole-punched rings for you to suspend from your ceiling that you can fill with whatever you want.

His photographs demonstrate a few clever options, like colored liquid and greenery, but the sky (or at least the roof) is the limit – you could add sand and earth from distant travels or whatever you want to these intentionally empty vessels.

Italian design firm Rimadesio produces modern sliding door systems in a variety of finishes, to subdivide interior spaces while maintaining an open feel. Used in residential, office and retail applications, these door systems are custom-made to fit specific rooms.

Visually lighter than more conventional walls, these sliding doors provide a sense of separate space without making rooms feel closed off. The transparent glass collection, called Velaria, almost seems to multiply the space available, drawing daylight from one room into the next.

Other collections, such as Graphis, range from slightly frosted to entirely opaque. Lacquered glass has a mirror-like effect.

The Stripe collection is characterized by aluminum crosspieces on both sides of the doors for a screened effect, making them ideal for walk-in closets.
