March 8 - writing a job application cover letter and a CV

Today we applied the principles of Plain English to a specific purpose - applying for a job.

We looked at the basics of:

a cover letter for a job application, working from a template -
a CV, working from a template

In both instances you will have to consider modifying these templates based on your personal circumstances:

your level of training and experience
your interest in the particular job

We worked through the details of these documents - what you should put in and what you should elave out.

I also distributed the assessment grid that I will be using for this assessment - producing this letter and CV.

The Session # 2 today was given over to tutorial support to enable practice for your first draft of this assessment. If you would like to send a 1st draft this week, then by all means do so.

HOWEVER I will be in Adelaide until 11:30am Thursday (March 11), and can only be reached by fax during this time.

What we did on February 22

Today we did the following:

We looked at the characteristics of good public speaking. We also did a lot of in-house practice using a set 3-minute talk per person on a topic that interested them.

For next week:

I'd like you to choose 2 printed items:

Item # 1:

1 piece of writing (such as newspaper article or web story) that you do not understand.

This is so we can apply some Plain English principles to it next week.

Item # 2:

1 job advertisement that you would be interested in applying for at some time in the future (not now, unless you want to)

This is so we can use it for your assessable tasks:

Job application - consisting of

CV
Cover letter

Job interview

For Item # 2, you are welcome to get the advertisement from:

Newspaper

Statewide - such as Sydney Morning Herald or Daily Telegraph OR

Local - such as Macarthur Advertiser

Job seekers' web site

I recommend

Seek - nationally renowned

MyCareer - operates similarly to Seek, but has the advantage of letting you nominate a preferred travelling distance from a nominated suburb (such as 20km from Campbelltown).

At this stage it is not necessary to launch an account with either service (whic in any case is free andenables useful additional features)

BUT PLEASE - when looking at the advertisements

Do not reply to the advertiser at this stage (unless you choose to) - just print or save the ad

Do not give your credit card or bank account details to any advertiser - this is a sure sign of a scam.

What we did on February 15

Today we did the following:

I announced that due to renewed clarity of thought I have change the Assessment order around slightly so you will doing the Job Application and CV BEFORE you do the Job Interview. (More logical, right?). This is reflected in the revised Assessment sheet distributed in class. Please note that the DUE DATES STAY THE SAME or, indeed, go back (NOT forward) a bit.

I also announced that the Topic Timetable is altered slightly to accommodate this shift.

We then looked at how people present themselves in the workplace and elsewhere. This was a 2-classmates then a group discussion based on 3 case studies:

A. Mr Bean

B. The Umbilical Brothers

C. Bargearse (VIEWER ADVISORY: Scatological humour)

(For case studies 1 & 2 I ran different video to what is shown here. For Case Study # 3, the exact same video is shown.)

The 3 questions that we covered in discussing these case studies were:

1: If you were meeting this person / these people for the first time, what would your impression be – positive or negative? Why?

2: If you thought that this person / these people should improve the impression that they make, AND you were not the person’s / persons’ boss, how would you influence him / them?

3: What can we learn from watching how this person / these people operate?
