This Friday, Sly One vs Jurrane will be launching the world premiere of their new project – Machine Intelligence Live! – exclusively at Planet Angel‘s Big Return Party – the underground phenomenon that continues to take the London dance music by storm with their unique, non-profit ethos.

This will be an Ableton Live production set, with the guys mixing basslines, percussion, melodies and more from their tracks together, on-stage for an hour,  then hitting the decks for two 1.5hr DJ sets.  It promises to be an electrifying show, and it will be recorded for the October edition of the duo’s Machine Intelligence radio show.

I love both, but one thing has been driving me nuts for ages, and everyone had told me it couldn’t be fixed.

One of the seemingly most commonly requested features amongst Virus TI users who also use Ableton Live (including me) is real-time rendering.  Because the Virus can’t render its parts offline, it is necessary to render sets in real time, but Live seemingly provides no options do do this.

Users resort to all sorts of annoying workarounds to this problem (myself included, until I worked this out), such as bouncing the Virus parts down to separate audio tracks, then doing an offline render, or setting up a resampling record track and bouncing the entire arrangement, then fishing around in the project folder for the file, which they would then need to reload in a new set and dither down to 16 bit separately.

However, it is possible to trick Live into rendering your set offline, by making it think that there are real external synths involved in the set.

To do this:

1. Create a new empty MIDI track
2. Add an External Instrument device
3. Route the MIDI to a real hardware MIDI out that isn’t in use (there’s usually one around somewhere!).  In the screenshot I have routed it to the spare output on my FW 1814 soundcard.
4. Route the Audio back from a real hardware audio input (can be in use for something else – it really doesn’t matter, as long as it’s a real input, not rewire or a multi-timbral plug in).  In the example I have routed it back from inputs 7/8.
5. Turn the gain on the external instrument down to -Inf so the low-level interference from your sound card doesn’t affect the output.

Now when you render, Live will detect the presence of a “hardware” device and assume it has to render in real time, meaning that all your Virus parts will also be rendered in realtime.

Episode 004, for those of you that missed it on radio over the last couple of weeks, is now published and should appear for subscribers shortly.  This one is presented by Sly One.   The plan is to get Jurrane on his own for the next show in a few weeks’ time, assuming Holland win the World Cup and he feels like leaving the house.

It’s the middle of a manic summer of festivals, stag weekends (!) and other craziness, but Sly One vs Jurrane are still filling every spare moment of their time with frenzied music making.  In addition to the follow-up to Everything To Me, which is slowly brewing, the boys have two remixes in the pipeline.

The first is for Perceptive Recordings, to follow on from their much lauded euphoric treatment of Stowers & Young – Ocean last year (check out the player on the right hand side of this page for a sample of that one!).  We’ll have more information on this shortly, but we can say it’s another opportunity to break out those much-loved vocal chops!

The second is for Discover Records, and will definitely (for those of you that have asked!), like the remix for Perceptive, be the trancier side of their sound rather than the darker, techy side.  We’ll have more info for you soon.

Both should be ready within the next 6 weeks, so we’ll be updating you as soon as we can with release dates.  The remixes should be just a matter of a few months.

In other news, we’ve also heard that Giuseppe Ottaviani has made his own rework of Everything To Me and is hammering it in his live sets.  More info as soon as we have it…

This one is a great fun mix of old and new, building from progressive all the way to banging tech and full-on uplifting trance – reminiscent of SOvJ’s legendary high-energy late-night sets – you can almost see the trademark grins on their faces!
