Fight The Future

SOPA is a bill that has been introduced in the US Senate in parallel with the PROTECT-IP Act which is moving quickly through the House of Representatives. It gives the government and corporations the ability to censor the net, in the name of protecting "creativity". The law would let the government or corporations censor entire sites - they just have to convince a judge that the site is "dedicated to copyright infringement."

The government has already wrongly shut down sites without giving the site owner the right to appeal. Under this bill, sharing a video that includes any copyrighted content, in a manner similar to that of YouTube, or linking to it via Twitter, would be considered illegal behavior and could result in the entire site being blocked.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill would cost US citizens $47 million dollars a year — that's for a fix that won't work, disrupts the internet, stifles innovation, shuts out diverse voices, and censors the internet. This bill is bad for creativity and does not protect your rights.

The Rope

Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, The Rope is the post-punk outfit of Jesse Hagon (vocals), Mike Browning (guitar), Sam Richardson (bass), Matt Evans (drums), and Paul Teravskis (synths, keys). Their gloom-laced songs incorporate the brooding bass lines, spiky guitar riffs, and aggressive percussion parts found on records by Killing Joke, Bauhaus, The Sound, The Sisters Of Mercy, and The Chameleons, while the layers of lush synths bring to mind Roger O'Donnell and The Cure.

However, there is more to this quintet than pure homage to their dark forebearers; The Rope have learned the lessons of alternative rock circa 1978-1984 extremely well and transcend their influences to give their own ambitious take on the sound that defined this rather bleak era. With Hagon's baritone croon in residence and martial drums that scream Martin Hannett from a mile away, the band's debut EP showcases some tight musicianship and proves that the future is anything but doom and gloom for this talented lot. Keep an eye on them.

There is no doubt that The Cure's dark and tormented music has influenced a great number of artists over the last 25 years, with Interpol, The Rapture, The Killers, The Smashing Pumpkins, KoRn, Blink-182, AFI, Deftones, My Chemical Romance, and nearly all non-pop-punk based emo bands being the first names that spring to mind. Without further ado, Strange As Angels, a compilation featuring 34 Cure covers, is Indie Disco's tribute to "the most successful alternative band that ever shuffled disconsolately about the earth."

PS. According to numerous rumours, the band is going to appear in several festivals all over Europe this summer. Get ready.

Tapped into the emotional space of early '80s post-punk, goth, and minimal synth, Skeleton Hands is the darkwave duo of Evan Scott Sharfe (vocals, bass, synth, beats, programming) and Chase Anderson (guitar, programming) from Cincinnati, Ohio. The band's moody musical parfait is layered with glacial synths, minimalist rhythms, cascading guitars, hazy vocals, and punchy bass lines that sound lifted from some long-lost band on Factory Records.

The gloomy allure emanating from the duo's darkly melodic offerrings will appeal not only to fans of The Cure, Joy Division, New Order, and Depeche Mode, but to everyone who craves the bleak romantic end of new wave. Tantrum Desire's take on ShockOne proves that when it comes to dance floor devastation, the London crew are a serious force to be reckoned with, while Arnaud Rebotini, aka the man behind Black Strobe, returns to action with some acid-influenced electro. Winter Severity Index is a post-punk / new wave band from Rome, formed in 2008 by Simona Ferrucci (vocals, guitar), Diana Salzo (bass), Mushy (synth, keyboards), and Elyria (drums). Embracing the shadowy storms of sheer misery that turned Ian Curtis, Robert Smith, and Morrissey into poster boys for self-loathing teenagers, the Italian quartet produces dirgey soundscapes in which towering layers of distorted guitars and dry-ice synths intertwine with prominent bass lines and doomy yet propulsive drumbeats to create deliciously depressing gloom-fests.

Fans of The Organ, The Cure, Joy Division, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Sad Lovers And Giants, and The Chameleons should get their hands on the band's debut EP and prepare to infuse their system with some essence of teenage brooding.
