Step 1

Type in the domain name name you registered in the address bar of your browser. Press enter and wait for your page to load. It shouldn’t too long as the site has nothing to show, or in other words its empty.  You will probably see a page with the directory listing of your home folder, i.e., public_html or htdocs.

Troubleshoot

I see a page which says ‘You account has been created’ or something similar instead the directory listing.

This is nothing unusual. Hosts usually create an index page by default. You don’t need and will have to delete it later.

My site doesn’t load at all. My damn browser shows a server timeout.

There can be a lot reasons to this. Lets discuss the common ones.

1. Make sure your domain properly configed. Just check whether the nameservers you entered are correct or not.
2. It may take up to 24 or 48 or 72 hours, depending on your host, for you domain to propagate.  You domain might not have propagated. You might have to wait for few more hours.
3. Your cache memory still has the old values for your domain. Clear the cache and you’ll have your site working.

Step-2

Now the time has come to create our first personalized homepage (for testing).

Log on to your hosting account’s panel and find for something like ‘File manager’ and go to root folder (public_html on Linux servers or htdocs on windows servers). In this file you need to create a new file by the name of ‘index.html’. If a file named ‘index.html’ or ‘index.php’ or any index file already exists, you have to delete it first before creating the new one.

Once created open the file so that we add some stuff to it. I’ll say just type in a warm welcome for yourself, something like “Welcome to your site.” !!

Go open your website in an another window and you’ll see your message. So that means you are done with with testing.

Now we are through with the testing which means we can soon go live to a wider audience.

Is it possible?

Internet comes up with solutions to every problem. Be it fixing your stuff or broken softwares. It has answers to all the questions.

In this case, we have got a couple of good softwares/scripts which perfectly meet our requirements. These are FREE microblogging scripts which can create something looking like twitter.

Here are few of them:

Floopo is an out of box script which enables you to start a microblogging site.

Most of its features are similar to those of twitter, it has both more and less to it. It enables the users to post picture updates along with the 140 char text ones. Though I feel twitter also has its own way of doing something similar. Well, there are quite lot picture sharing sites made specially for twitter. A good example could be Twitpic.com.

It doesn’t have the search function and the API support. But they are planning those features along with enabling users to get updates from twitter.

In my opinion, floopo surely needs a better look. The dull colors make the site unimpressive to the user. But that should be no problem if you are a web designer and work a better theme.

Well, this has to be my favorite. Ever heard of identi.ca, if not let me tell you that it is one of the top competitors of twitter. StarusNET was formerly known at lanonica. Only thing I have to say is that it is at par with the twitter along with a lot additional plugins supported by an open source community.

Moreover it can be connected to other popular social networks like twitter, facebook, etc. with ease, i.e., no need to update your StatusNET site instead it’ll get your update from the social network you use often. It has also support for OpenID.

Its based on PHP and no hefty requirements.

Can the almighty google be left behind? Jaiku is google’s reply to twitter. Jaiku’s code was eventually made available by google as open source and is currently known by the name of JaikuEngine. It runs on Google’s AppEngine and is scripted in python. So you’ll need a python enabled server to use.

They call “Shartronix Opensource”, a multimedia microblogging platform. Well, I’ll say its the most simple looking of all of them listed. It has most of the features. Its a PHP based script but allows you do a lot. I’ll say its somewhere between twitter and facebook.

It has the API feature and can be integrated with the twitter. Also has mobile support. It is also written in PHP.

Search engine, mail service, browser, operating systems, social networking etc. Well now there is a url shortening service to it. With so many url shorteners already available, there is always a difficulty to find a reliable one. But with goo.gl you will have a clear a choice as you know that google can be trusted. According to them (googleblog.blogspot.com), this service is suppose to be more

1. Stable:  ”Google’s scalable, multi-datacenter infrastructure provides great uptime and a reliable service to our users.”

2. Secure: “As we do with web search, shortened URLs are automatically checked to detect sites that may be malicious and warn users when the short URL resolves to such sites.”

3. Faster: “At Google we like fast products and we’ve worked hard to ensure this service is quick. We’ll continue to iterate and improve the speed of Google Url Shortener.”

Currently the service is just available with Google toolbar and FeedBurner, and not as a stand-alone service. I hope they’ll make it available for wider use soon.

Job done.

Arsenal won Champions League Group H with something to spare after dismissing Standard Liege 2-0 at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

The home side bossed an eccentric first half that saw goals from Samir Nasri and Denilson but will be most remembered for the jaw-dropping five-chance melee that preceded them.

Arsène Wenger’s side dictated the game from start to finish but, having obtained the required advantage, offered some benevolence after the break.

After taking 10 points from their opening four games, Arsenal were virtually through before kick-off anyway. This result just rubber-stamped their passports for the Knockout Stages.

At his pre-match press conference, Wenger had accepted his side were always on a hiding to nothing in this group. They were expected to cruise through comfortably and, in the end, they did.

But then, quiet efficiency is nearly always underrated in modern football. Just ask Liverpool.

Wenger made five changes from the side beaten at Sunderland on Saturday.

Denilson was restored to the side after 10 weeks out with a back problem. It was his 100th appearance for the Club.

Kieran Gibbs returned after recovering from a badly bruised foot. Carlos Velamade his first start of the season in the central attacking role while Andrey Arshavin came back on the left and Emmanuel Eboue did likewise at right back.

Bacary Sagna, Tomas Rosicky, Eduardo, Armand Traore dropped to the bench. Aaron Ramsey was left out all together.

The Liege fans took centre stage before kick-off. They had had little to shout about thus far in Group H and were facing elimination tonight. But the travelling support did not let that stop them.

Arsenal fans, on the other hand, arrived with a mixture of emotions; disappointment from the weekend and anticipation towards this Sunday. With qualification all-but assured this was seen as just another day at the Emirates Stadium office.

However there was nothing bureaucratic about the way their side began. In the opening minutes, Alex Song, Nasri and Cesc Fabregas all had presentable efforts on goal. In the 10th minute, the Frenchman spurned the opportunity to shot after popping up on the left side of the area but his cross found Vela. The Mexican cut inside but his shot was saved.

Arsenal were pressing and pressing. A goal seemed likely. It should have arrived five times in the 15th minute.

It all started when Fabregas took a corner…

• Arshavin’s point-blank shot was saved
• Then Vela’s collected the rebound and planted the ball against the post
• Then Gallas had two efforts blocked by the keeper
• And finally Vermaelen’s vicious shot beat everyone, hit Arshavin on the line and flew wide

Stupefying.

But then no more shocking than Dieudonne Mbokani juddering the post five minutes later. The Congolese striker darted inside Vermaelen and lasered an effort off on the angle of post and bar from the edge of the area. It was the first attack the visitors had mustered all night.

On the half-hour, Gallas nudged a header over the bar from a Fabregas cross. The Frenchman clashed heads with Arshavin in executing the chance. Both players needed lengthy treatment. The Russian had gash on the top of his head and Gallas had swollen eye worthy of a heavyweight boxer.

The home side had not yet returned to 11 men when they took the lead. Given the bizarre events so far, it was relatively mundane. Vermaelen punted the ball forward towards Nasri and Landry Mulemo, the covering defender, slipped as he tried to intercept. The Frenchman pounced then lifted his shot over the keeper and into the far corner of the net.

It was so nearly 2-0 a couple of minutes later. Nasri slipped a clever ball to Arshavin who drove a low shot inches past the keeper’s left-hand post.

This was an open, attacking and wonderfully curious game. Five minutes from the break, Liege seemed to have won a clear penalty when Gallas clattered Reginal Goreux. Referee Konrad Plautz played on.

Fabregas nearly rubbed salt in the wound seconds later when he whistled a low drive across goal and beyond the far post.

Both sides seemed to be looking for the refuge of half-time now. However this peculiar game had one more twist. On the whistle, Gibbs tapped the ball to Denilson 25 yards out. He took a touch, looked up and thumped it. Keeper Sinan Bolat, so brilliant early on, could only parry the ball into his own net. Nevertheless it was a fine, fine strike.

Perhaps it was that goal which convinced Wenger to take off Gallas at the break. The job of qualification was nearly done and the Frenchman could be saved for Sunday. Mikael Silvestre came on.

Liege were now in an impossible position; chasing the game away from home against a side that seemed to be their superiors. They nearly grabbed a lifeline seven minutes into the second half when a free-kick from Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez found Axel Witsel eight yards out. The midfielder miskicked at the crucial moment and Almunia gathered.

Arsenal had clearly taken their foot of the gas but their engine was still ticking over. Vela got a glimpse of an opportunity but thrashed his shot horribly wide. Substitute Theo Walcott cracked an effort inches past the far post.

By the midway point of the second half, Wenger had made all his changes. The manager clearly thought that this particular Group H box had been ticked and therefore he did not want to over-exert his side.

As a result, Liege were allowed to have a go. With eight minutes left, Goreux cut inside and Gohi Bi Cyriac smashed a left-footed shot against the base of the post. His supplier then belted the rebound over the bar.

Carcela-Gonzalez clashed heads with Fabregas in the dying seconds and was sent off. That ended the Belgians’ battling.

When the whistle went, Arsenal had only 10 men on the pitch as Gibbs had picked up an injury and hobbled off down the tunnel.

That was the only concern on a crushingly comfortable night at Emirates Stadium.

Sunday should be a stark contrast.

So, finally we have reached a stage where we are going to learn on how the camouflage, known as the domain name, works for a site. Integrating a domain with an hosting account is one of the most essential part when it comes to building a web site. In this chapter we ‘ll try to understand on how we can connect a domain to a hosting account following a few few easy steps.

What is to be camouflaged?

As mentioned in the previous chapters, the original stuff is stored at an IP address such as 192.0.0.1. But hiding these sets of numbers using domain names makes it more user friendly. You certainly wouldn’t like to use 74.125.127.100 instead of google.com. Yes! If you type 74.125.127.100 in your browser’s address bar, you’ll surely be directed to google’s site. Google.com points to 74.125.127.100 which eventually points to the google’s site.

Let’s integrate

This is no mathematical integration, its just the connection between the domain and the hosting we are talking about. Let’s do it:

What do you need?

These are the stuff that you should have by now if you are following this tutorial, right from Chapter 1. This is nothing new, you should have encountered them at least once by now:

1. Domain name: If you got one, its good or else get a co.cc. Refer to previous chapter for more info.

2. A hosting account: Refer the related chapter for more info.

Now a little information, you should have been provided in your welcome mail from you host, includes your login info, name servers, etc. It might include a shared ip address and some other info which might come handy in chapters coming up.

We just need to know the nameservers for now.

What is a name server?

Just wonder one server per website. Well that should be ok if you got a money tree or if your site is profitable enough to support such a server. So the point is that most of the servers usually host more than one domains.

And this is where name servers come into play. A number of domains can point to a single name server assigned to a particular hosting server.

In computing, a name server (also spelled nameserver) consists of a program or computer server that implements a name-service protocol. It maps a human-recognizable identifier to a system-internal, often numeric, identification or addressing component.

For example, on the Internet, a special case of name servers, so called Domain Name System (DNS) servers, are used to translate a hostname or a domain name (for example, ‘en.wikipedia.org’) to its corresponding binary identifier (the IP address 145.97.39.155), or vice versa.

How to use name servers?

Now if you have a domain, you must reach to your domain control panel provided by your domain registrar. The procedure can be different with different panels but only think you need to find is something like “Edit Name Servers”. Instructions for some popular domain registrar’s is given below.

Steps(for name.com i.e., if you bought you domain using name.com):

1. Log into your Name.com account.
2. Click on the ‘Account’ icon at the top of your page.
3. At your ‘Account’ page, click on the domain name you wish to modify.
4. Be sure that your domain is unlocked; to unlock, click on the padlock icon.
5. On the ‘Manage Domain Name’ screen, click ‘Edit Name Servers’ in the ‘Control Panel’ on the right of the screen.
6. ‘Remove’ the old name servers, and ‘Add’ the new.

Steps(for godaddy.com):

1. Login to your GoDaddy account.
2. Click My Account
3. Click Manage Domains
4. Click the domain name.
5. There is a Host Summary option in the lower left of the page. Find it and click Add.
6. Enter the information from the welcome email
7. Click the Nameservers icon that’s on top.
8. Change the nameservers to the new ones.
9. You’re done

Steps(for 1and1.com):

1. Login to your control panel.
2. select [Domains | your domain | DNS | Edit DNS settings]
3. Enter Name servers
4. click OK

Steps(for the free co.cc):

1. Login in to your co.cc account.
2. Domain Settings > Manage domain > Select your domain.
3. Click “setup” button > Manage DNS.
4. Input NAME SERVER of your hosting registrar.

Now you are finally through on how to integrate your domain and hosting.

Note:

1. Name servers may take upto 48 hours to take effect so you have be patient.

2. Changing nameservers usually deprives you of few features that your registrar has to offer. No need to worry because there are ways to get back working again for you. We’ll talk about such features, their use and how to work them out in the following chapters.

What is actually a DOMAIN?

A DOMAIN is an identification tag for a website. You have surely seen something like domain.com ( eg. divyun.com). Well, that is what’s exactly called a domain name. Its like a camouflage for the IP address (you know long sets of numbers like 192.0.0.1) which are the real addresses of your site and hard to remember. They are an excellent solution to those long IPs.

Advantages:

1. Easier to remember than their parent IP addresses.

2. Something that reflects you. This is really not possible with the numbers.

3. Ability to choose something unique where the IPs are just assigned to you.

4. Makes it easier for the search engines like Google, Yahoo, etc. to index them. Searching through IPs would really make a search engine a mess. Just give it thought, you search for the keyword ‘Webmaster’ and what you get is 123.056.042.999(random IP, might belong to someone) or something like that.

In todays scenario, I don’t think many webmasters actually even remember the actual IP of their websites. Well, that’s the case with me too…..

The DOMAIN diagram

At the top of the table are the TLDs(Top level domains). These include your .com, .net, .org, etc. Along with the TLDs there are ccTLDs which are Country Code Top Level Domains. These belong to a specific country. Like .in belongs to India, .us to United States, .uk to the United Kingdom, etc.

Here is the list of all TLDs and ccTLDs @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Internet_top-level_domains.

Now second in the list comes the second level domain and that’s what we are usually meant to register.

A regular domain or Second level domain consists of two parts:

1. The domain name

2. The domain Extension

The Domain Name

That’s the innovative part of your domain because this can be simply anything. Here, you have freedom to choose from a variety of keywords from dictionary words to self-created.

The Domain Extension

Domain extension is actually the TLD or ccTLD you register under preceded with a .(dot). Like yourname.com, domain.in, etc.

Domains may even be a third level. Some examples are co.uk, co.in, etc. These work just like a TLD. And they are usually cheaper than their corresponding TLD or ccTLD.

Registering a domain name

Registering domain name is no big deal but there is more to it. You’ll find it out as we proceed.

First of all, you need to think about a proper label for your domain. Well this could anything as stated above but there are some restrictions:

1. No special characters are allowed in you domain name except -(hyphen)

2. When including a hyphen, your domain name con not begin or end with a hyphen. like -domain.com or domain-.com

3. Maximum length of your domain name can be up to 63 characters or so as mentioned by most hosts.

Problems you are likely to face while choosing a domain

Most of the times the domain you’ll be thinking of would have been already taken. As far as I know, all the one, two and three letter domains are already taken for most of the TLDs so you better not try for that. most of the dictionary words have also been registered already so you really need to think hard about the name you’ll want to register.

Dos and don’ts while choosing a domain name

1. See to it that your domain name is not too long.

2. Your domain name should be easier to remember. asdasfaxv.com is quite hard to remember isn’t it?

3. Your domain should have relation with your site. Nobody goes to table.com for information about satellites.

4. Try not include a hyphen in your domain name. They make your domain name to harder to remember.

Choosing the appropriate domain extension

.coms are the most popular TLDs. Most of the people would prefer a .com to any other domain extension. But with not many good .coms left to register, other extensions are gaining popularity. I’ll say if can get a .com the it would be the best otherwise go for anything like a .net, .info, .org  or even a country domain.

Now the, SECOND step is to find a domain registrar. I’ll say go with name.com. There services are the best ones around. Alternately you can go with Godaddy, 1and1domains or search for one on any search engine. A .com usually costs around $9 or so. Their prices vary with the domain registrars and time.

Most of the domain registrars are user friendly and the domain registration is smooth. But remember to preserve the information you get, mails you get from your registrar. You may require them later.

Do I need a domain now?

Well, actually you really don’t need to buy a domain at this point of the tutorial as you still are in the process of learning.

The Alternative

A free alternative to a TLD is co.cc. What you’ll actually get will be a sub-domain but it will work exactly like TLD.

Well mistakes cause problems and problems may lead to mistakes. Here are a few:

Domain with a typo

What if you are with limited resources and buying a domain. While entering the domain you typed “yourdoman.com” instead of “yourdomain.com”. They look pretty similar, right. (If still didn’t find the difference, they differ by just an “i”) Anyone can misjudge this to be right and carry on with the registration. But after registration , you’ll know that you wasted a domain and your 10 bucks. Such a situation sucks. Right?

No Backup, no blog

Well, I have been in such a situation several times now. Some mis happening may lead you to a dead end. Thinking positive, you didn’t take backup, and next day you loose your blog. You’ll be left with nothing expect two options. First to start all over again and second to quit.

What the heck, installation

Installation is fun once you are familiar with it. But for the first timers it can be a hell of a job. I’ll illustrate a few situations :

a) You installed wordpress and but forgot to note down the password provided to during installation. In such a situation, an experienced person would surely change the password using phpmyadmin or do something similar. But a newbie would probably reinstall the whole thing.

b) This happens with many of us, not only bloggers, I’ll say everyone. You downloaded, uploaded and are ready to install a software. And now while installing you come to know that your host wont support all the features and now you need to look for a new host. That is really annoying right!

c) In due to course of installing something, you have a power cut or your computer hangs. Then you’ll surely want to bang your head against the wall that now you gotta start all over again.

d) While installing you come across a field that has to be filled but you don’t know what to exactly fill. eg. you need to enter your mysql username. You created ‘user’ using control panel but you didn’t know that your host add some thing to it like “cpuser_user”. You’ll have good trying “user” when it wont work.

All’s well, that updates well

Suppose while updating your wordpress installation, an error shows up and your blog stops working. If you are a hardcore webdeveloper then maybe you’ll get over this but if not, you’ll have a hard time. You’ll feel helpless as you know what went wrong but really can’t do anything about it. Your blog will be nothing more than a living dead body as it would have everything but nothing would work.

This has even happened to me last year when while updating my blog, something happened and I lost everything.

No money, what to do?

If you got a job or have any other source of steady income, then this point wont bother you. But for people who are beginning or are still studying in schools or colleges then this should be a problem. You have to arrange the startup amount for the initialization by any means. And most people tend to start working as freelancers or turn to PTCs or such programs. Once you are through you’ll feel relieved as not only bloggers but everyone feel at ease if they got money around.

Time and tide wait for none

Well, its really hard to take out time if you are employed somewhere or you need to study. A blog really requires a lot of work to be done. If you can’t devote enough time to it then its gonna be difficult, both for you and your blog. With shortage of time, you can’t really interact with your readers properly, can’t post regularly(you may take my example on this). Nothing is left important when everything is important. You have focus on everything and mange your time well.

My site’s ready, what next?

So every thing’s set and you are ready to take over the world but…… how? Even when a blogger is through with his site, he is yet to face biggest challenge of all, traffic. Getting traffic is the most difficult job for a blogger, an internet marketer or even a small shop owner. To convince people to visit your blog and comment is quite tough.

Out of ideas, can’t think of anything

You have been going great guns past few months but suddenly ………….now what?

You really can’t think of anything interesting to write about. That’s a general thing to happen once you have written so much. Even when you have some ideas, there may come some stituations when you’ll not be able to exploit them. eg. You just got a brilliant idea in your head but while surfing you come across a post, by a fellow blogger, on the same topic. Well, that would be sad and in 90% cases you tend to drop that idea.

No one wants me to blog

Situations will arise when people around you will think that you are wasting your time. That would be very discouraging and some might even quit. You may lose your interest and all the inspiration. I’ve been in such situations and lemme tell you that it really sucks. One day or the other you’ll feel like, “Forget it! Blogging is not worth my time”. errr…. That was ugly.

& many more problems are faced by the bloggers.

You would have gone through similar problems or even something which I was not able to think. I know you wouldn’t mind to share your experience with me or tell about something which I can improve on in this article.

A blogger’s life is sweet, live it to the fullest.

You should have received the welcome mail with your hosting details. It should include the following:

1. Your account details

These include you user name and password.

2. Site details

Your site’s domain name (should be a sub domain provided by the host/domain you signed up with) and cpanel’s address.

3. Server details

These should include name servers and might include shared ip address.

You will need the server details later once you’ll get your domain name. But if the host asks for a domain name at signup, get a co.cc domain from http://co.cc.

Getting familiar with your working conditions

Once you have an account,you should get thorough with the control panel. Just wander around,click on random links, to get familiar with your control panel. You will generally find short instructions coming up for your help once you navigate to any page.

Site Initialization

Navigate to the file manager and find you main root folder its generally public_html or ht docs (depends on the service ). Now use, ‘create a new’ file option to create new html document with file ‘ index.html ‘ (don’t use any other name for this time ). For the content go for anything like ‘hello world ! Welcome to my new site’.

Now you are surely through with the hosting so now you need to learn how to set up stuff on it like blogs, forums, etc.
