My daughters and I have been attending Rheault Farms Fall Festival since my girls were little.  Today they are in their early teens and still like attending thanks in part to their younger cousins.   We take lots of pictures, play games, and really make it a fun-filled family day.

This year the festival will be held on two weekends, September 18-19 and September 25-26.  The festival will be from 10:00-5:00 on Saturdays and 12:00-5:00 on Sundays.

This year they will be selling wristbands for $5.50 per child, which includes unlimited games and rides for the day.  They will also have horse-drawn rides on the weekend of September 18-19 and pony rides on September 25-26.   Purchase of pumpkins will also be available from the Pumpkin Patch.  Please view the following list for all the fun fall activities to be held these two weekends.

The Happy Hooligans will be hosting their first-ever Hometown Heroes Salute Ceremony this Saturday, September 11, 2010.  This awards ceremony will be honoring over 300 North Dakota Airmen and their families.  All Airmen who deployed from 9/11/2001 through 2008 will be recognized. Speakers will include Gov. John Hoeven, Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, N.D. adjutant general, and Col. Rick Gibney, 119th Wing Commander.  Next year the plan is to honor all the airmen who have deployed from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2010 and from then on will become a yearly event.

My husband, who is a First Sergeant in the Air National Guard, says it is important that we recognize the men and women who serve our country.  He says it will be an honor and a privilege to see them receive their awards.  He also believes families should be recognized for all of their sacrifices they make on a daily basis in support of their service members and ultimately our country.

The ceremony will be from 8:30-10:00 a. m. in the maintenance hangar on the North Dakota Air National Guard base in Fargo.  Following the ceremony, the 119th Wing will celebrate family day at the base.  This will include Games Galore, Guitar Hero tournament, and Operation Military Kids.  Lunch will also be served.

I plan to attend this event with my family this Saturday, September 11.  As a family, we do recognize the sacrifices made every day by these men and women and will join in expressing our appreciation for their service to our country.

The Fargo Public Library Main Branch coordinates a Current History Book Club the LAST Tuesday of every month.  They discuss from 7 p.m. to approximately 8 p.m.  On Tuesday, September 28, 2010 the group will meet to discuss “ Blind Man’s Bluff” by Sherry Shontag, Christopher Drew, and Annette Lawrence Drew.

You have probably seen many advertisements stating that they can help you settle your debts for a lower amount. With most of these companies, for a fee, a professional debt-settlement company will help you get rid of your debt for as little as half the amount you owe.
I don’t have any personal experience with a debt settlement company but will share information I have learned about it. It works for some people and some share horror stories about it.
Most creditors will not settle with people until they are in real hardship, which means they are not able to make their payments. In some stories, the debt settlement companies tell their clients to stop making payments and that ruins their credit scores even worse than they were to start with.
The fees charged by these companies vary by firm and are not always easy to determine what the fees are.
Some creditors will settle accounts for less than you owe if you are able to make a one-time payment. In these cases some may settle for between 20% and 75% of what you owe and the creditor will forgive the rest of your debt and will report it to the credit bureau as settled. However, when you settle like this it is considered taxable income. Any forgiven balance over $600 you will owe taxes on that amount. For example, if your tax rate if 15%, $5,000 of forgiven debt will have a $750 tax liability.
So if you are drowning in debt a debt settlement company may sound like an easy fix but you need to do more research before committing to this solution.

Consumers are being warned to exercise extreme caution in dealing with companies that offer to reduce credit card debts. The warning follows a little-noticed rule announced by the Federal Trade Commission which is likely to put many put of these firms out of business in the next few months, but only after they have collected millions of dollars in fees without providing any service.

On July 28th, the FTC adopted a rule that prohibits firms from collecting upfront fees from consumers in debt settlement cases. Instead, they will have to wait until at least a partial settlement is made before collecting their fee. They will also be forced to disclose how long the process will take and the possible negative consequences of using a debt relief service.

The new rule does not take effect until Oct. 27, and the debt settlement companies are still advertising their services and may legally continue to collect these fees until the cutoff date.

What happens to the consumer when the company goes under? Under the typical contract with debt settlement companies, consumers stop paying their lenders and instead pay into an escrow account for both the fees and the balance on their credit card debt. The escrow accounts are usually at third party institutions, but there is nothing in the current law to prevent a company from closing on Oct. 27 and taking its fees without performing any service.

She will be speaking at NDSU’s Festival Concert Hall Thursday 9/2 at 7:00. For more information see an article in today’s Forum. In her book she chronicled how people were having difficulties surviving on minimum wage jobs. That was 10 years ago, she will discuss how much more difficult it is in today’s economic climate.

The author of socio-economic best-sellers “Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America” and “Bait and Switch: The (Futile) Pursuit of the American Dream” documents the gritty reality facing the work force.
As indicated by the title of her Thursday speech, “Women, Economics and Poverty: On (Not) Getting by in America,” Ehrenreich will discuss how the unskilled laborers she worked alongside in her 2001 book, “Nickel and Dimed,” are facing even tougher times now.

Now 10 years after researching “Nickel and Dimed,” she tried to track down her former co-workers, but found it hard because many couldn’t afford to settle down. One woman was doing about the same, though her husband had lost his job. Another woman saw her hours as a house cleaner limited to part time because of health problems.
Ehrenreich says many people scraping to get by seek less medical care, such as patients not being able to refill prescriptions.
Looking back 10 years ago, she recalls being “shocked” by “inadequate wages” and conditions and how some employers would cheat workers out of their rightful earnings.
As an example, she says about 43 percent of big businesses won’t hire employees without a good credit score.
