The Hollywood Comedy Fest, presented by Frog Island Comedy, is still accepting submissions for standup comedians. The Hollywood Comedy Fest will take place at the Lovitz Comedy Club on August 26-28, 2010 at 8pm. Every comedian chosen to perform in the fest will receive a prize. The award ceremony will take place at Skinny’s Lounge in North Hollywood the following evening, Sunday, August 29th, where the cash and prizes will be distributed. The following are answers to some frequently asked questions:

Does it cost anything to submit?

Yes – but unlike some other festivals that don’t give away cash or prizes and can cost into the hundreds-ours is only $25 for early bird submissions- which are going on RIGHT NOW until July 15, 2010!

Who’s on the panel?

Ian Cohen, New Wave Entertainment

Tammy Jo Dearen, booker- Independent Comedy Festival

Keegan Michael Key, “Mad Tv”

Gary Light, GL Management and previously of William Morris

Jon Lovitz, “Saturday Night Live”

Mo Pollock, booker for the Downtown Comedy Club

Mike Rotman, Show Runner- Comedy Central

Rachel Rusch, Montreal Comedy Festival

Is this the same thing as the L.A. Comedy Festival?

No.

Side note: Looking to promote your band or business? The producers are looking for donations and contributions in exchange for advertising. Donate your band’s CDs, tickets to your show, a gift certificate to your business to be used as prizes in exchange for your name in the program.

I just read this on the City of Burbank website and thought it was cool enough to pass along. I think one of the best things you can do for yourself is travel and learn about other cultures. It opens your eyes to new ways of thinking. Starting today, The City of Burbank welcomed ten college students and two chaperones visiting from Burbank’s sister city, Incheon Metropolitan City, Korea. The Burbank Sister City Committee and the Incheon Center for International Cooperation and Exchange are hosting the program, and this is the second time a student from Incheon has visited Burbank.

“The students will live with Burbank host families during their twelve day stay, improving their English skills, learning about daily life in the United States, and experiencing Burbank hospitality. A full itinerary has been set to introduce them to local sights and attractions, such as a tour of Warner Bros. Studio, Universal Studios, a visit the San Fernando Mission and a tour of UCLA. The Incheon delegation will also visit the June 29 Burbank City Council meeting, tour the City of Burbank, and enjoy celebrating the 4th of July, Burbank style.

“Next summer, the Burbank Sister City Committee is anticipating sending Burbank students to visit Incheon Metropolitan City as part of their ongoing cultural exchange program. It will also be the 50th anniversary of the Sister City relationship between Burbank and Incheon.

“The Burbank Sister City Committee is a non-profit organization composed of community volunteers, dedicated to fulfilling the Committee’s mission of promoting communication, goodwill, and cultural awareness between the City of Burbank and its Designated Sister Cities. Burbank has four Sister Cities: Solna, Sweden (1960); Incheon, Korea (1961); Gaborone, Botswana (1975); and Ota, Japan (1984).” (City of Burbank)

If you had to come up with a list of your favorite Burbank spots for the students to visit, which spots would they be and why?

Even our streets get makeovers. There was a big celebration last week as the repaving of Clybourn Avenue in Burbank began. Councilmembers were there and everything! Check out the official press release below:

Los Angeles (June 10, 2010) – Councilmember LaBonge joined celebrating residents and city officials at the launch of the Clybourn Avenue street repaving on Thursday. Donning hard hats decorated with City of Los Angeles and City of Burbank emblems, the Councilmember praised the cooperative efforts to resurface the street that joins the Toluca Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles and the City of Burbank.

From the north end of Riverside Drive to its southern terminus of Toluca Lake Avenue, Clybourn Avenue was riddled with asphalt deterioration and patchwork fixes. Councilmember LaBonge worked with the City of Burbank to address the wear and tear. The Los Angeles Bureau of Street Services will repair the street beginning Thursday and the City of Burbank will foot the bill for the next resurfacing.

“I promised two things during my campaign,” said Councilmember LaBonge. “I promised to bring the government to the people of this City and I promised to repave Clybourn Avenue. It’s been a long road to fix this street, but we’ve finally conquered Clybourn thanks to the teamwork between our two cities.”

Councilmember LaBonge was joined by Board of Public Works Commissioner, Andrea Alarcon, Bureau of Street Services Director, William A. Robertson and Assistant Directors, Nazario Sauceda and Ron Olive. Burbank Mayor Anja Reinke and City Manager Michael Flad also shared in the celebration.

“The Clybourn Avenue resurfacing project is an outstanding example of collaboration between two nearby cities working together to enhance the quality of life for all residents of the region,” said William Robertson, Director of the Bureau of Street Services. “We are pleased to participate in this important project and acknowledge the City of Burbank for its partnership with us.”

About the California High Speed Rail Project

The California High Speed Rail Project is a high-speed (up to 220 mph) conventional train system connecting San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento, along with other intermediate cities. The route would pass through the City of Burbank and would include a stop near Downtown Burbank.

City of Burbank staff has been working with the California High Speed Rail Authority to ensure all potential impacts within the City of Burbank are addressed as part of the project’s environmental review. While staff has been monitoring the Authority’s ongoing progress as it develops the proposed project, at this time there has been no formal recommendation or policy direction made by staff or the Burbank City Council in favor or opposition of the Califiornia High Speed Rail Project.

I just like alliteration. I was scouting around for some activities in Burbank and wanted to pass this info along. One helps the earth, and one helps the Boy Scouts. Thank you to Burbank Wire for sharing the following:

This event is hosted By Burbank Elks Lodge #1497, and the car wash is open to the public. Boy Scout Troop 210 is having a car wash fund raising event in the parking lot in front of the Burbank Elks Lodge 1497 on. The cost is $5.00 per car and $7.00 per van, SUV or truck.

At the same time the Lodge will be serving breakfast served from 9:00 am to 11:30 am to Elk members and their guests. Non-Elk members, who purchase a car wash, are welcome to stay for breakfast too. The $7.00 special breakfast includes waffles with bacon or sausage, coffee and juice, and there are other menu choices as well. Come out, support the Boy Scouts, and get your car washed, while having breakfast!

I’ve admitted in previous blogs that I rarely keep up with sports, but it’s time for another sports blog. While I don’t understand sports, I do understand drinking. I saw this drinking game posted on EPL TALK and thought it looked fun. Hmmm, maybe I will start watching the World Cup…

South Africa 2010 World Cup Bingo/Drinking Game

The rules are simple: watch the games and watch out for the cliché events, both on the pitch and in the commentary box and tick them off/drink as directed. As the events below happen mark your score/drink as per the point system below.

One Point/Drink

A goal is scored

Double Points/Drinks

if the player celebrates through gymnastic display (e.g. somersault, forward roll, backflip)

A player is booked

Commentator describes a carnival atmosphere in the stadium

if the camera pans to a beautiful woman in the crowd at this point

The camera pans to a beautiful woman in the crowd at anytime

Commentator talks about a nation having a chance to be the first African nation to lift the trophy

if no African nation is involved in the game being played

If a free kick is awarded and the commentator talks about how much David Beckham or Christiano Ronaldo would relish an opportunity from this range (non-Portugal games only)

Any mention of Roger Milla (Legend) by a commentator

Any mention of 1966 either by a commentator or in the studio at half time

if England, Germany or North Korea are not playing

Any time an injured player is mentioned outside of the announcement of the teams

The phrase ‘group of death’ is used by anyone!

There is a Mexican wave

if Mexico is playing at the time

A commentator mispronounces the name of one of a player

if they try to correct themselves and still get it wrong

The commentator mentions how close the Irish team were to the final

if France is not involved in the game being played

Any mention of the ‘Hand of God’ incident (drink to forget the pain)

Ten Points/Down your Drink

A player is sent off

A referee does a ‘Graham Poll’ and books a player twice without sending them off

A manager is sent to the stands

They will be doing one of my all-time favorite summer activities—watching a movie at Hollywood Forever Cemetery! In fact, I will actually be at this particular movie, so maybe I’ll see you there. Here’s the scoop from Woodbury University:

Bring friends and family to Woodbury University Alumni Night at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Saturday, June 12.
I know I’ve already raved about Cinespia, but you really must go! They’ve already been showing movies for a couple of weeks now. I can’t believe I’m just now going to see my first one. I will bring back pictures to entice you. What could be better than watching a movie in the cemetery while having a picnic with friends? You can even bring your own booze! I’m telling you, it’s the place to be.
