IRVINE, CA – July 6, 2021 – Dinsmore Inc., a 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing company located in Irvine, CA recently won first place in the advanced finishing competition at the 2021AMUG conference in Orlando, FL. AMUG’s annual technical competition recognizes excellence in Additive Manufacturing applications and finishing techniques.

The winning piece, titled “Death: A Horseman’s Journey,” was submitted by Dinsmore’s Director of Operations, Bill Braune. Printing of the piece began in 2019 using the Carbon M2 system and is comprised of 21 separate pieces, with a total of 170 hours for completion, including painting. “I connected with this piece from the start,” says Braune. “The detail, the textures, the smooth transitions—everything about this is so detailed.”

One of the most exciting aspects of this piece is that it showcases what can be achieved with 3D Printing beyond standard parts and production. The organic look and feel of “Death: A Horseman’s Journey” is made possible by the level of detail Carbon’s Digital Light Synthesis technology provides, and by the intricate finishing and painting.

Dinsmore Inc.’s wide range of 3D Printing capabilities include SLA, PolyJet, MJF, SLS, and DMLS, in addition to Carbon DLS. But no matter what type of Additive Manufacturing job it is, whether production parts for industrial applications or more artistic projects, “It always requires finishing to get it to that end look,” says Braune. “You’ll always see layer lines no matter the system you print it on.” Due to our extensive expertise, the finishing department at Dinsmore, Inc. is capable of more than just rough industrial finishes. “We can actually bring things to life; it’s really amazing what we can do here,” says Braune.

Imre Patterson is an active 5-year-old who participates in mountain biking and competitive hurdling, thanks to customized orthotics made possible by advances in 3D printing technology and polyurethane materials.

Anaheim, Calif. — Imre Patterson is an active 5-year-old who participates in mountain biking and competitive hurdling, thanks to customized orthotics made possible by advances in 3D printing technology and polyurethane materials.

The California boy was born with a femoral discrepancy, resulting in his left leg being shorter than his right. But he tries not to let the difference slow him down, striving to keep up with his two older brothers on rugged bike trails and ahead of other runners at track meets.

To better correct the asymmetry, Imre’s parents turned to 3D printing  rm Dinsmore Inc. in Irvine, Calif., about two years ago for help with a customized shoe that would allow their son to pursue his favorite activities. They were looking for something more durable and lighter than the manufactured foam boot he had been wearing.

Dinsmore brought a team of experts together, including Jason Lopes, production development engineer at Carbon Inc., in Redwood City, Calif., to  find a solution. The best option at the time called for forming a nylon 12 material into a latticed midsole using multijet fusion technology.

However, new considerations for Imre’s shoes have since come into play. The latest versions are made with an elastomeric polyurethane material and Carbon’s digital light synthesis (DLS) technology to improve properties and form.

“I don’t think anyone realized at the time that Imre is an extreme-type athletic kid,” Lopes said during the Medical Design & Manufacturing show in Anaheim. “He’s not walking nice and easy on this solution. He’s putting it to the test. The bike pedal gouges the side of the shoe.”

Plan B was to modify the shoes to be more in line with the sports in which Imre participates. “The nylon worked, but it was heavy, uncomfortable and a more cloggy-type shoe,” Lopes said. “We wanted to bring comfort to it and performance.”

How’d they do that?

The Dinsmore staff came up with a mix of rigid and elastomer materials that have the right properties for the sports Imre likes and the lattice form Lopes created.

The material also bonds well with the shoe bucks given to the team by Deckers Outdoor Corp., which sells popular brands like Ugg boots and Teva sandals.

The shoes provided by Deckers were 3D scanned at the SEMA Garage in Diamond Bar, Calif., to determine exact contours. Using the scan data, the Dinsmore team designed the computer-aided design model and shape of each 3D printed midsole to fir the specific Ugg and Teva shoes to which they would be bonded.

“Being able to create an actual functional elastomer material with Carbon was really the key,” said Jay Dinsmore, founder and CEO of Dinsmore Inc.

The team then used DLS light to shape the liquid material into a lattice form for the midsoles of three customized shoes for casual wear, sports and the beach.

Carbon said DLS is a breakthrough technology that uses digital light projection, oxygen permeable optics and programmable liquid resins to produce parts with excellent mechanical properties, resolution and surface finish.

Because the midsoles were digitally designed, they can be scaled up as Imre gets older. “Imre’s only 5 [years old], so he will grow — and rapidly,” Lopes said. “We’ll be able to apply a scale factor and send his parents new versions of the shoes as he grows.”

Dinsmore said his team is on a journey with Imre and his family.

“We absolutely are going to work on this to give him a better quality of life,” Dinsmore said. “These are things that 3D printing and additive can do. You don’t need to be an expert in the space to see how these technologies truly change peoples’ lives.”

At MD&M West, Dinsmore also talked about the company’s work in the medical space, including patient-specific organs and spine models for surgeons. He pointed to a replica of a heart.

“This is all done from CT and MRI data,” Dinsmore said. “The doctors perform a mock surgery before they do the surgery. They set up the model, navigate their way through and see if they can deliver a device into the heart. It really is life-changing.”

Have you ever thought you’d ride your bike more often if the seat was more comfortable? You’re not alone in wishing for a better bike seat. Fitness instructor Bryan and his client Ani were dismayed at the state of bicycle seat comfort and decided to invent something that would address the chafing and saddle sores commonly experienced from cycling. Together, Ani and Bryan conceptualized, designed, developed, and patented the VSEAT, an extraordinarily comfortable bicycle seat that can be used on any indoor and outdoor bicycle.

IRVINE, California, December 10, 2019 — Dinsmore Inc., Orange County 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing services provider with over 25 years industry experience, delivers custom 3D printed orthotics for Imre Patterson, a young boy who was born with a femoral discrepancy (causing one leg to be shorter than the other). Using breakthroughs in both 3D printing technology and materials, the team at Dinsmore Inc. designed an alternative to his traditional manufactured foam boot using Carbon’s Digital Light Synthesis (DLS) technology to 3D print a lightweight, latticed midsole. This is the same technology used to manufacture the midsoles of Adidas 4D Futurecraft shoes.

The youngest of three boys, Imre is extremely athletic and has a smile that lights up every room he walks into. His eagerness to embrace life one step at a time led his family to look at 3D printing as a possible solution to improve their son’s quality of life. A family friend connected the Pattersons with Dinsmore Inc.’s 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing services in Irvine, California. After meeting Imre, the team immediately started working on a 3D printed solution to help him do all the things he loves to do. The best solution at the time of the first shoe’s design involved using nylon based PA12 material and HP’s Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) Technology. This process uses an array of inkjets that apply fusing and detailing agents to selectively melt fine grains of powder, combining it with a binding agent and heat to form the shape of the latticed midsole. Although this shoe was durable and lighter than his manufactured foam boot, a second round of shoes was needed to keep up with Imre’s active lifestyle.

Carbon’s Digital Light Synthesis (DLS) technology was considered for the second version of Imre’s shoes, because of its ability to 3D print the midsole using elastomeric polyurethane based material. This material would provide Imre with a durable, lightweight, and responsive midsole. DLS used light to shape the liquid material in the form of a lattice, forming the midsole specifically in the shape of each shoe it was bonded to. In order to fit all these components together, the shoes provided by Chris Hillyer at Deckers Brands were 3D scanned by Conner Morris at the SEMA Garage. Using the scan data, the Dinsmore team was able to design the CAD model and shape of each 3D printed midsole to fit the specific TEVA and UGG shoes that they were bonded to.

Production Development Engineer at Carbon, Jason Lopes assisted with designing the lattice structure specifically for the technology commented that “as he grows bigger, we can put a scale model on it.” Because the midsoles were designed digitally, “as Imre grows, we can take the baseline of what we’ve already done, modify that lattice structure, and create another midsole,” according to Jay Dinsmore, the Founder and CEO of Dinsmore Inc. One of the benefits of 3D printing is its ability to design upon previous data and adapt it to whatever necessary changes need to be made in the application. Both Imre and his family are actively involved with Dinsmore Inc.’s 3D printing experts to create solutions for Imre as he strides into a future as bright as his smile.

3D Printing can be a complicated process. With new technologies being introduced into the market on both the consumer and industrial end, along with an alphabet of 3D printing materials to select from, can make even getting started a daunting task to undertake. Companies that offer 3D printing services need to be experts in both the technologies and materials offered. If you’re looking to start on a project that requires a realistic prototype, PolyJet technology offers a multifaceted solution. Dinsmore Inc. in Irvine, CA recently added the J750, a PolyJet printer to its expanding Additive Manufacturing technology arsenal. The J750 is capable of producing parts from a selection of over 360,000 colors, textures, gradients, transparencies, and durometers. It can create prototypes that look and feel like finished products, requiring no added assembly or painting.

Premium Adaptability
A machine with this much versatility requires a service provider that understands the materials and how each customer’s specific finished product needs to look. Able to print several different types of materials—from opaque to transparent, flexible to rigid—all types can be applied to a single job if required. This means that applications that previously required multiple systems, now can be completed in one single build using the J750.

Improve Your Design Workflow
PolyJet provides prototypes, models, and patterns in high resolution and detail so that you can have the freedom to design in vivid color and be able to get a feel of the final product. From flexibility to opacity, the J750 accommodates multiple material combinations to produce realistic models with the ability to apply texture patterns like wood grain and printed photos. High end concept models can be developed without any tooling, and are ready to present in the boardroom straight off the machine.

Dinsmore Inc., a premier 3D printing and additive manufacturing service bureau located in Irvine, CA, had the pleasure of hosting 80 young students from A Little Dynasty (ALD) Chinese School for a day of discovery. ALD specializes in immersing students of all backgrounds in hands-on environments that help to nurture their sense curiosity while learning to improve their Chinese language skills. During the interactive tour, students were introduced to a variety of 3D printed parts, diverse processes, and innovative technologies.

One of the featured technologies included in the tour was Carbon’s Digital Light Synthesis (DLS) which “uses digital light projection, oxygen permeable optics, and programmable liquid resins to produce parts with excellent mechanical properties, resolution, and surface finish.” Students were able to learn about this technology first-hand in Dinsmore’s newly designed Carbon Lab which exclusively produces parts via this cutting-edge process. Students shared their ambitions for using this technology for everything from printing houses for the homeless to designing new inventions.

In the main lab, students were able to see how 3D printing can combine several materials and colors into a single intricate model using Stratasys’ PolyJet Technology. PolyJet builds parts using “multiple print heads to deposit liquid plastic onto a clean build platform, layer by layer.” With this technology, complex geometries can be produced with “microscopic layer resolution and accuracies down to .01mm,” and in materials that can simulate anything from clear, flexible, and rigid. Students were able to hold finished parts from medical models to sunglasses, displaying the spectrum of how creative one can get with 3D printing using this technology.

Another technology featured on the tour was Stereolithography (SLA) on a large-scale via 3D System’s PROX 800 which uses a “very wide spectrum of Accura® additive manufacturing materials.” SLA enables the production of parts with “polypropylene-like, tough/durable, clear, casting, high temp composites and specialty materials.” The PROX 800 system is capable of building massive parts as large as 650mm x 750mm x 550mm with high accuracy.

At the end of the tour, each student received a souvenir from their day at Dinsmore—a dog to celebrate the year of 2018 which is the Chinese zodiac of the dog. Dinsmore Inc. is passionate about the 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing industries and encourages educational visits. If you’d like to schedule an educational tour or if you’re curious about how you can improve current prototyping process using the latest technologies, please feel free to contact us or reach us directly at (888) 496-3406.
