FleetMon’s fellow member Rob was on a 2.000 miles trip to transfer the sailing vessel Marathon from Barcelona to Falmouth. He already shared some photos and information with FleetMon, and now, nearly arriving the destination of his journey has provided us with his personal experience report:

“When I was asked if I would like to join the delivery crew on Marathon I considered it to be a trip of a lifetime. It has certainly been that and also fun, exhilarating and hard work.

The heart of the system is a small grey, highly waterproof box. On arrival in Barcelona it was simply a case of placing it anywhere on the vessel. I chose to place it on top of the instrument housing directly below a hatch and merely secured it with double sided tape.

It was a dream to use the tracking system – once switched on and deposited on the vessel, it required no further intervention and even reported back the state of charge of its replaceable batteries.

A brief word about the Marathon: Although based on the hull mould for a

44ft Feeling, Marathon was custom built in 1990 for the original owner to take part in a single handed round the world race and is of a double thickness fibreglass construction, in this guise it had no engine but was fitted with a generator where the engine now resides; all the sail handling gear on this cutter rigged yacht is set up for easy use with no less than 10 winches (5 either side) within the cockpit and a further 3 on the mast. With roller furling gear on the jib and foresail and up to four reefs possible in the mainsail it is easy to trim the yacht to suit the weather conditions without having to change sails – a system that came into its own in the severe storm we encountered outside La Coruña. Due to the unfavourable wind and weather conditions forecast we had to interrupt our delivery there and temporarily returned home.

My personal high point was climbing the mast to free off some trapped rigging on day 2, one of the trip’s high points were dolphins shadowing the boat off Portugal. A near miss with a large commercial that turned towards us was may be one of the most scary moments.

Some crew members on phoning their family during a stopover to tell them where they were received the reply `I know, you have already been there a day, I am watching you on Fleetmon!´.

The trip has opened my eyes to the possibilities of a satellite tracking for not only large companies but also individuals, wishing to monitor their valuable but movable asset, fleet owners – both commercial and pleasure, offshore race organisers, delivery crews, etc.

The detailed data including speed profiles and weather and sea state information and forecast, available both in real time and as an historical downloadable file may be used for live position monitoring, post trip analysis, route planning and performance analysis.”

Knowing which vessels are expected in a port for several weeks in advance is a true business advantage that you should not miss.

Today, discover a new dimension of vessel schedule information at FleetMon.com: FleetMon now makes full voyage schedules, routes and intermediate ports available for a large number of vessels, providing you with a new set of possibilities and advantages. Vessel schedules and port arrivals functionality has been vastly improved.

FleetMon users save time and effort thanks to the comprehensive schedule information directly integrated in the vast FleetMon.com Vessel Database. Know in advance where the vessels of your interest will pass by and which ports are visited next by looking up the voyage schedule on the vessel’s detail page.

Visit the ports of your interest and retrieve detailed information on the vessels scheduled to call in the weeks to come, for example in Hamburg, Dar Es Salaam, Surabaya, or Paramaribo. Find hundreds of ports around the world that have been added to FleetMon as part of the update.

Business analysts and researchers will appreciate that FleetMon’s powerful port call history benefits from the improvements, too. It’s easy to research a vessel’s port call history over months, for example to compare schedule and actual port calls, or to inspect the records of vessels of a given type that have called a port in a given time.

Advanced schedule data is available for a growing number of vessels. The timeframe available in schedule tables and in the history tables depends on your account level. Please refer to our Plans & Prices page for further information and don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions!

Good news for the software developers among our users: Over the last weeks, many of you came to us asking whether it is possible to link own software to the FleetMon Vessel Database and make use of this vast resource of ship information. We listened, and here is the FleetMon Personal API!

It is an HTTP API that is available to any FleetMon.com user now, out of the box. No need for setup or configuration – every user is given a Personal API key automatically. Whether XML or JSON tastes better for you as a data format, the Personal API is able to serve both, prepared freshly for you on every request.

We start off with two API functions:

The My Fleet API enables you to retrieve latest vessel positions and status from your personal My Fleet list with a simple HTTP request. It does not only return pure latitude and longitude, but a true wealth of information, including last port call detected, two photos, and current destination and ETA as reported by the ship.

My Fleet API example output

This way, you can, for example…

create your very own fleet position map for your company homepage or intranet,

add vessel position and status display to your in-house software,

automate monitoring of changes in the vessels’ estimated time of arrival,

implement your own alerting via e-mail or SMS based on vessel position and status,

record vessel position and behavior over time and run your own analyses,

much more…

Second, the Vessel Search API lets you look up vessels from the FleetMon Vessel Database and returns the URL of the appropriate vessel detail page. Search by IMO number, MMSI number and vessel name is supported.

If you have any of these available, you can easily point the users of your software to the detailed vessel information available on FleetMon.com:

FleetMon.com’s My Fleet section has just been improved and optimized to give you quicker access to vital information: Now, My Fleet presents all important events in your fleet at first sight. Whenever one of your ships reaches a port, leaves a port, changes destination, or updates its estimated time of arrival, My Fleet will highlight this for you!

Right after opening FleetMon.com, you will find your personal start page with a quick overview of everything that happened among the ships that you are following. Move on to “My Fleet” to see all ships on the map, plus the latest notable event of your vessel’s journey in the Latest Events column. Don’t miss out on events in your fleet and react quickly!

Want to have an overview of what happened when during your vessel’s voyage? All those events are recorded in the Fleetmon Vessel Database and are available for review in the new Voyage Log on the vessel detail pages, for example, the HS DISCOVERER.

Look up regular position logs, all changes of the destination and ETA and inform yourself about port arrivals and departures – All information now available in one comprehensive table!

Please note: The Open account is restricted to the last 24 hours on the Voyage Log. Pro and Unlimited account members will be able to review longer journeys (7 days / 30 days back). For details, check our Plans and Prices page.

So log in, create or update your personal My Fleet list and follow your vessels around the globe. Your feedback is as always much appreciated!

We are introducing a new shiny labeling display.

We made the display of the vessel tracks even more precise and introduced a new modus for the last track of a selected vessel. If the vessel is on its journey for more then 24h FM Explorer will recall the traveled route to the last port visited.
The new feature will give you more insight with just a single click.

detailed display of vessels track in FM Explorer

category colors in vessels name labels in FM Explorer

Colorful labels with the name of every vessel names
are making your monitoring live easier :-)

The automatic labeling mechanism will start showing labels, as soon as less then 150 vessels are active in your viewport. We did some research and found this value matching general locations quiet well. The color of the label reflects the category of the ship.
This makes finding these clouds of tankers very easy…

So enjoy the new FleetMon Explorer display and let us know, what you think!
