Went to the Fryeberg Fair in Maine the other day and took a bunch of photographs on a perfect weather day in October. I have never seen the trotter horse races that happened to be running that day, so on the way out I took a couple of photos of the race and got some nice shots. Below is one of the shots which I then placed a photoshop plugin filter on to get a totally different photograph.

When I teach a new class learning digital photography, over 75% of the students turn up with the camera the salesman suggested.++Guess what? They soon find out that it's the wrong one for them. This can be a very expensive mistake. So the big questions are what is the right one for me and how do I know which is best for me.++One of the first things that you want to know about the camera that the salesman is trying to sell you is as follows -
How long does the camera take to turn on and be ready to take the shot? In the consumer market this can range between 1 to 5 seconds most being towards the 3 seconds mark.
How long does the camera take to focus on the subject? (Not to take the picture) most cameras take between 1 to 3 seconds most at around the 1-second mark. How long does the camera take to actually take the photo after you have pushed the shutter button completely? Again, most cameras take between 1to 3 seconds this is called shutter lag time. Now you can see to take a photo can take up to 5 seconds just to turn on and up to another 3 seconds to focus in and the up to another 3 seconds just to actually take the photo.++In a cheaper camera, but not necessarily cheaper it can be up to 9 seconds to take a photo from the camera turned off. You may say "yes but I will leave my camera on" ok that's fine, but you may still have a lag time of up to 3 seconds just to take a photo. Just imagine how annoying it will be now that you have purchased your new digital camera costing you around $400 - $500 to find that you just can't catch your child blowing out the candles because your new camera at the critical time of blowing the candles out took 1 second to focus and a further 2 seconds to take the photo. What was the result? A child sitting in front of a cake with black smoldering candles.++Can you set the white balance on your camera? Just what is the white balance?++About 60% of digital cameras don't have this adjustment, you must buy one that can be set manually, not just one that has an "auto white balance" as they are not as good as they advertise. ++Does your camera have different exposure modes?++Exposure modes are simply where does the camera take a light reading? The cheaper cameras just do an all over reading which can be very limiting to say the least. A good camera will have a 'spot", "centre weighted" and 'matrix" metering system, which allows you to take great photos in any light situation.++When buying a digital camera, buy it for the fact that it's a camera not a video camera as well. One student showed me all the features her camera had and that's why it was more expensive – the only thing that it didn't do well was take still pictures!++You can get so much out of your new digital camera! you just have to put some time in for learning how to use it properly and how to take better pictures – remember no one will ever want to look at a poor quality photo twice!++If you want to take really great pictures that will be in your family for years put in a little effort with your new digital camera.

I was having some funky looking color from my Nikon d300 camera and did a search on how to reset the camera to default settings. With my Nikon d300 I just had to push 2 green buttons on the top of the camera at the same time and voila, I am back to default factory settings which I think is a good thing to do when images are not what you want. Here is a photo taken on the causeway in Naples Maine, and looking the way I like it, so the default settings change was a good thing.

Every 2 years I upgrade my cameras and sell the old ones on E-bay. This way I am able to keep up with newer models that have been improved and are generally better cameras than the earlier models and I am able to get good value from the camera I am selling so that I can continue to reinvest into newer models. I have just unboxed a new nikon d 3100 and also sold on e-bay the Nikon d 40x that I am replacing it with. I have to say that this little camera is super easy to use and the quality of the images and HD video is very impressive. I just got back from taking a couple of images with it that I will display below so you can see the quality it creates on just the program mode. I am also impressed with the macro images that this camera takes, even with the on camera flash the exposures are right on.

So here are few tips that would help us to have good professional photographs. (...)

So here are few tips that would help us to have good professional photographs.

Equipments
The first most important thing you need to do is to check the equipments before starting taking the photographs. The quality digital camera, camera bag, memory card, small tripod, photo printer or the computer, reflectors, lighting kit, a studio for shooting or an outdoor location, software's such as adobe Photoshop, software for the digital imaging, you should have few books on lighting the set up.

Know the camera
Before starting taking the photos, you should be familiar with the using of your camera, you should know how to use it, and you should be familiar with all the aspects as some cameras are not user friendly. Use the automatic settings of your camera, if you are just a beginner. The common automatic settings options are portraits, landscapes, close ups, action, bright light, slow shutter. See the manual of the camera for all these options. The moment you get comfortable with these automatic settings, you can work with manual mode. But before starting you should understand the usage of shutter speed and aperture as it will give you the correct exposure.

What images to take?
While starting it is best to start taking pictures of everything around you. Click on different objects with different sizes, shapes and colors. You can also photograph older books, clock, doll, antiques, and fruits. After spending time with the objects, than you can look for the good settings, do not worry about the light. Place the camera in tripod, and then take the photos from different angles, close ups, no zoom, camera at 90", camera at 45", from your left, from your right, straight shot, zooming and focusing on a object. Such actions would help you to be more familiar with the camera, and it will help you to create and understand creative shots.

Light
Now you need good lighting in the photos. Use flash according to the requirement, for instance you do not need flash if you are clicking the photographs in the afternoon as enough light is there outside. Use the natural light as much as possible to avoid the shadows. Avoid the shadow on the subjects. Do not click images with a light behind the subject.

Focus
Focus is the tool of any good photograph. If you focus on the correct subject in the photo it can make lots of differences in the photo. Be patient and spend some time with the camera to get a beautiful photograph.

It is true that one cannot learn Art or cannot induce in someone the eye for beauty. But obviously, if you have it in you, it can be honed to perfection; however small that is. As a self taught landscape photographer, who has learned everything from the hours of waiting for the perfect light to the mistakes committed, I feel both glad and proud to share the secrets and the insights of landscape photography that contributes to the making of a great photograph. This is for all those who breathe through their lenses like me!

But before telling you the few basic ingredients to perfect landscape photography, let me tell you one secret that holds true even for the universe. It's called the harmony. The key to every great thing is to strike the harmony right and landscape photography is not an exception. Open your eyes to the harmony all around you!

Landscape Photography: The rule of three P - preparation, patience and perseverance

To capture the mystical and scintillating beauty of nature, you shall have to wait at her doorsteps, respecting her own tantrums, whims and fancies. After all, something that is so great or so beautiful is not readily available. And for all who thinks, landscape photography is easy, here's where you'll find out that it is not. Behind a photograph that is par excellence, there are days of research, hours of thoughts, weeks of getting to know the topography, angles, crowds etc., endless failures and months of sleepless eyes eager to catch the perfect moment.

To get something great, you need to have perseverance, patience and also a lot of preparation. As a landscape photographer, I can guarantee the fact that a great shot takes a lot of time and a whole lot of mental preparation. So, my first advice to you would be before looking through your lenses, look around the geography.

Scout your chosen area. Note its important features; note the unusual and interesting angles, and its changing crowd levels. Take time to prepare the shot and make sure you are ready with your tripod or mini-tripod, cleaned lenses and the cable release before the best time of the day. Try out different filters and wait for a good foreground. If you have people in your frame, talk it out with them and break the ice to make them feel comfortable.

Choose a simple and clear layout- too many subjects dilute the depth and focus of your photograph

Remember that what you call as a good shot is the one that focuses your attention on the subject by using a fairly sparse background and a simple and interesting composition to strike a clear harmony. Removing the clutter for your picture requires real skill. Achieve that. Landscape Photography comes out best when you focus on your subject.
Not just landscape photography, any picture you click, requires that subtle judgment of de-clattering your picture. For example, if you are capturing a musician, try zooming in, getting close to your subjects eye level and find a simple backdrop for your subject which will highlight your subject. Look for that vivid balance.

Play with colors. Look for bold solid colors for that unforgettable photograph

For vivid and warm landscape photography, notice the 'Stock-quality' images. If you notice them, you would see that they make great use of color. So, while you are taking such a photograph, search for solid primary colors. Bright 'red, emerald green, lightning yellow, and ocean blue- solid colors give a different dimension to your picture. Use a polarizer to bring out the vivid colors. While you are playing with colors try to avoid patterns as much as possible as they tend to distract your viewers from the subject.

Alternatively, for a calmer effect on your landscape photography, look for 'color harmony'. Scenes restricted to similar tones and colors, or even a single color brings out a calm, restful image where the eye plays with the differing shades and intensities. Look for pastels, cream, or delicate shades, when it's a serene effect you want to capture.

Create drama with lights

In my vertical, which is landscape photography, I've often seen that photographs that win competitions are often the ones that make fascinating use of light. Keep an eye out for that silver lining- the beams of light shining through clouds, sparkling light through the trees or windows, elaborate long shadows and the effect of side and backlighting. Try and use the beautiful warm golden hours of early morning and late afternoon. You will experience magic through your lenses at these hours. Maybe this is why they are called 'magic hours'. Landscape Photography requires the skill of the use of light.

Of the people, for the people by the people

Include the power of people in your photographs. You must have noticed that magazines in particular always create a dramatic effect by including people in the shot. A human face or figure always gives the viewer a human connection. It instills in your viewer a sense of being there, a sense of scale.

If you want to portray emotions there is nothing better than capturing a face to say it all. Laughter, despair, hope, hopelessness, proud, age- a human face tells it all. Simplify the shot down to one person for that exclusive reaction.

Catch the promise of tomorrow with the young and the worldly and the weather worn. Young and old faces make wonderful subjects with their innocent expressions and aged with wisdom faces respectively. They make your shots warm, friendly, and someone you can relate to. Like a good old friend. Such photographs never grow old.

Take heed of the above ingredients and mix them in an equal proportion according to your subject, place and time and you'll see that in no time you have a photograph that you can be proud of!
