The dramatic eight-hour operation began 90 minutes after the left hand of 26-year-old Robert Pennell was accidentally amputated at the wrist on June 14, 1965 by a single blow of a bush ax. This illustration, by George Lynch, Professor and Director of the Department of Medical Illustration, shows how the severed hand was reattached. The numbers indicate the order in which the operation was performed.
