Did You Know: some people manage to remain conscious for a few seconds right after being decapitated?

In the heyday of the guillotine during the French Revolution, it is said that many of the condemned were asked to blink for as long as possible after decapitation. While many reportedly did not blink at all, some complied for as long as thirty seconds. Still other observations describe much more specific reactions to stimuli following beheading. Consider the case of Languille, a convicted murderer who was guillotined in France. He was observed by Dr. Beaurieux during his execution at 5:30am on June 28th, 1905. As written in Archives d'Anthropologie Criminelle, here are the doctor's observations:

"Here, then, is what I was able to note immediately after the decapitation: the eyelids and lips of the guillotined man worked in irregularly rhythmic contractions for about five or six seconds … I waited for several seconds. The spasmodic movements ceased.

The face relaxed, the lids half closed on the eyeballs, leaving only the white of the conjunctiva visible, exactly as in the dying whom we have occasion to see every day in the exercise of our profession, or as in those just dead.

It was then that I called in a strong, sharp voice: 'Languille!' I saw the eyelids slowly lift up, without any spasmodic contractions … Next Languille's eyes very definitely fixed themselves on mine and the pupils focused themselves … After several seconds, the eyelids closed again, slowly and evenly, and the head took on the same appearance as it had before I called out."

Baghdad Blast kills eight as Obama Visits

A car bomb blast targeting a mosque in a Baghdad Shiite district killed eight people and wounded 14 others on Tuesday, just ahead of a surprise visit to the city by U.S. President Barack Obama. The strike on the Husseiniyah mosque, in the Kadhimiyah neighborhood, also comes a day after a series of six, apparently coordinated car bombings struck mainly Shiite areas of the city.

No group claimed responsibility for the recent blast, but the U.S. military said the attacks bore the hallmarks of al-Qaeda in Iraq, a Sunni extremist group that has targeted Shiite civilians in the past.

The government blamed supporters of Saddam Hussein in league with al-Qaeda and suggested the blasts were timed for Tuesday's anniversary of the founding of his disbanded Ba'ath party. Thursday is also the sixth anniversary of the U.S. capture of Baghdad, which ended Saddam's Sunni-dominated regime.

1 USD is said to be .0043 inches thick and weights exactly 1 gram. Using simple arithmetic, we can obtain the height of a stacked 1,000,000 $1 by using this equation: 0043 inches x 1,000,000, which is equivalent to 4300 inches. We could then convert it into meters by multiplying it with 0.0254, that is since 1 inch is equivalent to 0.0254 m. 4300 x 0.0254 = 109.22m or 358.33 ft. To obtain the weight, we simply multiply 1 gram with 1,000,000, getting us 1,000,000 grams. We then convert 1,000,000 grams into metric ton by multiplying it with 0.000 001, that is since 1 gram is equivalent to 0.000 001 ton. 1,000,000 x 0.000 001 gets us 1 ton.

FedEx Plane Crashes in Tokyo Japan Airport

This video was captured during the crashing of FedEx's McDonnell Douglas MD-11 cargo plane at Tokyo, Japan's Narita Airport on March 23, 2009. The plane came from Guangzhou, China. According to observations at the airport, wind gusts were reported to be between 30 to 50 mph around the time of the accident, and may had been the cause of the crash. The pilot and the co-pilot of the aircraft, both American, died on the spot.
