The San Diego Comic-Con 2011 was amazing. I met great people and received a wonderfull feedback from Masters like Sérgio Aragonés, Mike Mignola, Neal Adams, Jean Paul Leon, Geof Darrow, Frank Cho and many others.

I was at the #1320 Booth and released my first sketchbook, The Diburros Sketchbook 2011.

The book has a stockpile of observational drawings, quick sketches, and general musings from trips, downtime at work, lunch with friends and most importantly, for the sheer pleasure of drawing. There are 52 pages, 35 with never before seen sketches and 8 pages of a WTF short story.

Quoting Joan Huang "Your drawings were gorgeous and disturbing in all the right ways. I love how full it is of art and ideas, even on the front and back covers. I utterly adore your handwriting, as well, and if you ever end up producing a comic with text, you should definitely consider hand-lettering. I really liked how profane yet matter-of-fact many of the sketches were, and how they jumped from realism to absurdity, a fairly accurate representation of the real world (or at least the one I've been experiencing). Like I told you at the convention, I find the ink-washed look to be beautiful and I particularly enjoyed the prone figure on the page with the angels and the beer. And in honor of never being alone, I might just have you keep your sketchbook with me at all times."

This small documantary was filmed in São Carlos - SP, Brazil, april 3 / 2010, a rainy sunday, using a Sony DSC-HX1 and edited with Apple's Imovie '9. The soundtrack is a Palmeiras's soccer game my father was listening in his old radio.

I did this watercolor Fofão for the last Halloween, nothing more appropriate than this cursed popular brazillian character from the 80's. Everybody remembers the old legend about the terrible curse of Fofão, whose dolls had inside their neck a small and black plastic sword, a dagger if you will, due to the pact with the devil his creator had made. After that, ashamed and regretted, he came on national television asking Fofão's owners to burn their dolls. Despite the numerous executions and persecutions of those damned toys, the creature lives and still today makes scary shows across the country. True story.

Jesus Hates Zombies Vol. 3

Last march I was invited by Stephen Lindsay to make the cover of his beloved comicbook "Jesus Hates Zombies - Vol. 3". And here it is.

In 2007 I had already made a pinup for this series. Besides that, Stephen and I are working on a project called C-Minus that is currently on hold while we finish other things. Daniel Thollin signs the inside art of Vol. 3 and if you're interested, you can order the Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 ( Featuring Danilo's great cover ) at Amazon.com.

When Stephen invited me to make the Jesus Hates Zombies Vol.3 cover, he already had an idea for what he wanted. Besides Jesus, who hates zombies, there is Abraham Lincoln, who hates werewolves. In this volume, they're going to be cruising around in the famous General Lee car, from The Dukes of Hazard.

Drawing Jesus is easy, but to draw Lincoln and the car I was gonna need some references pictures. I got everything I needed at the famous site EASYLIFE.com.

I started with Abe, as he was easier and more fun to draw. I hadn't started thinking about the layout, but decided to try to understand the man through some sketches of his face and his hate about those damn lycanthropes!

I liked the sketch and idea that Stephen had for the cover, I just redesigned it adding some perspective, changing the characters a little bit and and sent it for his approval.

Actually I was getting some problems with the whole car, characters, perspective composition in one sheet, so I decided to go the easy way and put all together with the help of our friend Photoshop. Of course it would be cooler to make it all work in one sheet, but I was with so little time and didn't want to keep Stephen waiting for my experiments and exercises.

I inked all of the elements separately, corrected the Lincoln face, the Jesus size and went to Photoshop to add some colors, the skyline and the Las Vegas sign.

With some textures and some dirt over our heroes, the cover was pretty much finished an I had the final image to show. Stephen was really fast to put the logo on the top of it and it was it.

The Mythological PORCOTAURO

"In Diburro's Mythology, the PORCOTAURO (Pῑνώταυρος, Porcotauros, Pigtaur) is a part pig and part bull creature. It dwelt at the center of the dry old Fountain, downtown, which was an elaborate skull-like construction builtby the first mayor and designed by his blind son, who were ordered to build it to hold old symbols and Ritualistic Behaviors. The historical site of the fountain, with over 13 secret compartments is identified as the site of an old druid cemetery. The PORCOTAURO was eventually retired, but still made cameos in fights just like Mickey Rourke."

These are some brush sketches I did for my old sensei, Marcus Caires founder of Aiki Institute in Ribeirão Preto, the so called Brazilian California.

“Yokomen Uchi Kiri Oroshi”

Aikido 合気道 is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba as a synthesis of his martial studies, philosophy, and religious beliefs. Aikido is often translated as "the Way of unifying life energy" or as "the Way of harmonious spirit." Ueshiba's goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury.

“Kotegaeshi”

Aikido is performed by blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on. This requires very little physical energy, as the Aikido Practitioner "leads" the attacker's momentum using entering and turning movements. The techniques are completed with various throws or joint locks.

“Ryotedori Tenchi Nague”

Aikido derives mainly from the martial art of Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu, but began to diverge from it in the late 1920s, partly due to Ueshiba's involvement with the Ōmoto-kyō religion.

“Yokomen Uchi Sumiotoshi” & “Kotegaeshi”

Some say that George Lucas studied Aikido and consciously took a lot from it for the Star Wars movies. It seems that many of the concepts attributed to The Force in Star Wars films, come directly from an active principle forming part of any living thing, The KI 気, that is frequently translated as "energy flow", or the life-process of energy that sustains living beings.

“Ni Nin Gake Morotedori Bokyu Nague”

Today Aikido is found all over the world in a number of styles, with broad ranges of interpretation and emphasis. However, they all share techniques learned from Ueshiba and most have concern for the well-being of the attacker. This attitude has been at the core of criticisms of Aikido and related arts.

INKSHOT

"INKSHOT is a new comicbook anthology put together to show the world some of the Brazilian production through short and dynamic stories done with gusto."

Last year Hector Lima invited me to join this project with a 5 page story and I decided to tell about two brothers. They were born in the same day, in the same village and under the same moon. They shared a history of crime together and one day, decided to make the move of their lives. After that, everything would be different, at least for one of them.

My colleague here at the studio, Danilo Beyruth also contributed with a nice short story.

This project is powered by Hector Lima, Pablo Casado, Felipe Cunha, Felipe Sobreiro and has no release date or publisher yet, but you can see previews, author bios, step-by-step of some of the stories and links of current collaborators in the INKSHOT blog. Spread the word!

IDEAFIXA Travel Sketchbook!

The "Ideafixa - Cadernos de Viagem" or "Ideafixa - Travel Sketchbook" is a sketchbook that travels from one artist to another, following a predetermined list. Different artists, but the illustrations subject is the same: Travel. The project will result in a travelling exibition or even a book.

The concept is not so different from the Ske tchtravel guys, but Made in Brazil and much easier to control.

Theese are my two pages. I took some pictures during the process and put together some kind of making of. In the last picture you can see all the materials I used in the work.

I was the 3rd to get the book here at the studio. Before me, Daldoce and Nitchows got the job done. After me, the task went to Pietro Antognioni.
