Luis Mansilla and Emilio Tunon in Ponteverdra, Galacia 

 Dear Shaded Viewers,

I met the architects Luis Mansilla and Emilio Tunon when we were on the jury together last week in Galacia. Both were born in Madrid at the end of the 50's and studied architecture at the escuela tecnica superior in architecture in Madrid. In 1992 they established their firm Mansilla + Tunon. They specialize in designing public and private buildings world wide and one of them that they are quite proud of is is the contemporary art museum in castilla y leon, spain , MUSAC. In 1907 it received the prestigious Mies Van der Rohe award. Recently they won first prize for the Madrid International Convention Center.

The two are  quiet and unassuming, one of their main concerns is how their work will interact with people's lives. I enjoyed discussing with Emilio the total lack of concern for that from some very celebrated architects. In addition to the human factor Luis and Emilio  are  very concerned about the environmental process and how buildings are constructed and insulated and how durable the materials are. When they designed  the facade of an automotive museum they used discarded cars, it was a way of expressing their feelings about recycling. Like the majority of architects, most of their projects are the result of competitions.

they won first prize for this institutional space that is able to catalyze initiatives concerning energy and sustainability in the territory of castilla y leon , Spain.

After years spent in the depths of his cellar breaking up glass or twisting bits of iron to make armchairs decorated with Christ transformed into Batman under the guidance of his mentors Andre Dubreuil and Marco de Gueltz, Vincent joined the renowed Boulle School in Paris where he received his diploma as a fitter sculptor in bronze metal. He left school and continued to work with bronze in the neo baroque style. Little by little his own designs became smooth and slippery like the tiles of a swimming pool. 

His baroque days over with the exception of the occassional ferret popping up in the corner of a lamp. He left Paris 4 months ago and is enjoying his new life in Sao Paulo. His blog shows his new life.

Nicolas Andreas Taralis

Dear Shaded Viewers,

I met with Nicolas Andreas Taralis today for a tea at les Deux Abeilles. We had a nice chat, he's back and forth to Italy working on his production and looking forward to a short holiday in Switzerland at the end of the year with his girlfriend.  Below are some images from SS09 and AH0910 that appeared in purple fashion, self service, fantastic man, 032c.

When Anna Rivka was a little girl she used to accompany her antique dealer parents on their journeys to the flea markets. At 18 she began her studies in jewellery at the rue du Louvre in Paris. She is an all round artist, sat for Van Hove, acted in plays, sings jazz...  Her inspirations come from Italian Renaissance paintings, Racine's poetry, music by Chet Baker... All of the pieces are hand made in her boutique-workshop with semi-precious stones, chains, brass engravings which have been sourced in Paris.

I met Roman Padin last week when I was in Spain, his leitmotif is "the bigger the better". The  materials are gold, silver, black jade, coral and ivory and all are hand crafted by Galician artisans in Santiago de Compostela. HIs work is available in art galleries and by private order.

Rain didn’t keep those raw Art Lovers at home last Sunday in Amsterdam.  The annual “Open Ateliers” from the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten offered  impressive work by 50 international artists in their “studio white studios”. Though you did travel a non-stop artistic manifestation, each room seemed to be a new situation inviting you to forget the previous one and made you curious about the next ones. While looking through their windows, you could see the old cavalry barracks sharing a silent and intelligent concentration under the gray sky. The Rijksakademie in Amsterdam is a leading institute for artists who want to develop themselves further and strive for deepening, broadening and accelerating their art practice. My visit was in the early morning, and I did spot some empty beverage glasses from the evening before. A tradition of pushing the Saturday until late while sharing serious discussions between artists, curators, collectors and local art-parasites: a tribute to the word Akademia (exchange ideas and knowledge). Financed by the Culture Department of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science; the Rijksakademie once again shared its prestigious aula counting with the international guarantee from its former residents as Fiona Tan, Alicia Framis, Gabriel Lester, Liza May Post, Jennifer Tee, Berend Strik . . . . enjoy the images!

American Jacqueline Rabun moved to London about twenty years ago, her jewelry boutique is on 32 Grosvenor Crescent Mews, London and now she has opened her new website and at the same time she has launched three new collections inspired by structured and architectural shapes. 

From 3-24th December she plays host to an exhibition of Modernist jewellery from the past and present in her showroom in collaboration with Grasilver.

A video installation is being organized at the Standard Hotel Spa Miami for Art Basel and will be showcasing 'Subliminal' a video piece created by the artist Justin Edward John Smith for six Scents: Series Two perfumes. The video piece will be installed in the Hammam and consists of 3 projectors, smoke and a very intense score. It was originally created to capture the emotions behind each Six Scents: Series Two fragrance.

My friend Kanako Koga told me about the blog of her friends 25 year old sister Morgane Blier. It is a real Christmas type story of courage and good energy that I wanted to share. A lot of people living with a heavy handicap like this would normally stay at home or be living in a hospital. The girl behind http://afreakwholovesclothes.hautetfort.com/ can not breathe on her own, she has to take medicine every four hours for her heart. But she does not stay at home, she goes to university, an ambulance picks her up in the morning and brings her home at the end of the day and on top of that she does a fashion blog. She loves Christopher Kane, she bought something  from his TOP SHOP collection on the internet. When you find yourself complaining about next to nothing, put things into perspective and find inspiration in this fashion blogger's courage.

Chrome wheel rims, motion sensor, audio components accompanied by a soundscape Dimensions 151x94x11

Satch has been a friend since the early 90's, he is a musician and visual artist who makes paintings and drawings, sculptures and installations accompanied with soundscapes. His work is a reflection on the African Disapora. The soundscape here employs a vocal excerpt from a 1940's recording of a Luba Congolese Catholic Mass over a deep dancehall beat with a subsonic bass line. 

Rimology explores the opulence of bling rooted in automobile culture from an Afro carribean soundsystem sensibility. This sonic trajectory vibrates throughout the African diaspora. Within its layering Rimology investigates the history of Jamacian music such as mento, Blue Beat, Ska, Reggae and Dub, which in turn found its way to the island via the middle passage. In the 1970's the BMW became the most desired car among Jamaicans and was fondly refered to as Bob Marley and the Wailers after Marley purchased a BMW for each of the wailers. In the UK Yardie context it was also known as The Black Man Wagon. Rimology also investigates contemporary Dancehall and Hip Hop asserting that these two defining cultures are amongst the major music signifiers in present day global youth culture.

Satch's 'Celestial Vessel' is part of a future Nasher exhibition. Celestial Vessel reflects his interest in the African Diaspora and his interest in music particularly through the vinyl record. Duke University commissioned 'Celestial Vessel' which will be part of 'The Record' an exhibition that will open in August 2010 at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke. The exhibit will include works in various media by artists whose subject matter is records.

Madame Sugahara in Blumarine  and Madame Nakano in Moschino

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Today Madame Sugahara and Madame Nakano invited Shoji Fujii and I to lunch at the Ritz with them. Apart from a minute the other day at Toraya, I had not seen them for two years and was delighted that they were back at their favorite Parisian hotel, the Ritz. After lunch we went to their suite because I wanted to see what they bought this trip. They love Hermes bags and Italian fashion. Blumarine and Moschino are on the top of their list.

They were able to buy Hermes bags without any waiting time, sign of the times. The new ones have two outside pockets. They each have about 30 of them.

I adore these two ladies from Kyoto and will see them again next year. Their yearly trip to Paris is about over. Shoji will be leaving soon for Kyoto maybe he will have news and see them there.

As far as I can tell, New Yorkers didn't celebrate Black Friday by going shopping; they (the cool ones, at least) celebrated by going to a black light party at Kenny's automatically-legendary-by-definition loft in Williamsburg. Of course we all felt like we were back in the '80s, especially when we spotted Cynthia Social Lies--whom I knew from the early days of TUNNEL--working the door.

Art Director Donald Schneider reunited with Nan Goldin for a lecture in Berlin. They know each other from the 80's in the East Village. They talked about those days and her work to a packed house in Berlin. Nan Goldin. Poste Restante Slide Shows/Grids is on until December 6th. "These pictures come out of relationships, not observation." Nan Goldin.

Nan's photos are as powerful now as they were thirty years ago. They oscillate between glamour and the gutter, euphoria and happiness and above all their strength is in their radical intimacy. Nan photographs people she is close to with sensitivity, capturing their identity, sexuality, desire, violence, sickness and mourning.
