      YVES SAINT LAURENT   -    PARIS 1983  

It is 1983 and I've just landed in Paris to shoot the Yves Saint Laurent Couture collection for The New York Times/Fashion Of The Times magazine. I checked into Le Meurice on Rue de Rivoli at 8 am, cleaned up and headed straight out to meet Yves Saint Laurent and his business partner/protector Pierre Berge. I emerged from the taxi at YSL's atelier, excited and a little nervous. Who wouldn't be, the man was notoriously private, the master at the top of his game. There was Yves, so relaxed and disarming. We met and connected right away. What I wanted was to capture was the magic of YSL, the transformation of fabric, from roll to worn opulence. Seeing him work was like watching a magician wave his hands, creating beautiful pieces before my eyes. I spent virtually every moment with him for a week, dinners at Maxims and walks through the Tuileries but mostly just at his atelier, capturing every moment that I could on film. He was totally in command, never distracted by anything or anyone. Completely focused on his vision, the slightest movements, the tilt of a hat, the detail of an accessory all had equal meaning. All of the work that I was witnessing culminated with the couture collection. There I was backstage, photographing Alexandre creating these amazing hairstyles the fashion crowd has never seen before on some of the most beautiful women in the world. There's YSL in his white lab coat, waving his cigarette like a conductor waves his baton. Yve's chief muse, Loulou de la Falaise right at his side at every moment as we move from model to model. After the show, I congratulated Yves. He put his arms around me and kissed me on both cheeks. 2 days later, I'm on a plane flying back to New York. I drift off to sleep- - my thoughts of the previous Paris couture week with the legendary genius. It will always be a precious moment in my career.

 Tasaki Shinju CO., Ltd., Kobe, Japan just announced that they have appointed Thakoon Panichgul their Creative Director. He will be working with fine jewelry is goal his to approach the jewelry in the same manner that he approaches his clothing: always moving forward but respecting the past.

Thakoon is one of the 6 designers up for the Swiss Textiles Award which takes place in Zurich on the 12th November. . Other designers up for the same award are : Peter Pilotto, Alexander Wang, Erdem, Ohne Titel and Alexis Mabille.  Past winners of the Swiss Textiles Award include: Raf Simons (2003), Haider Ackermann (2004), Christian Wijnants (2005), Bruno Pieters (2006), Marios Schwab (2007) and last year's winner was Rodarte. As the 10th anniversary of the award is this year, all of the past winners will be present.
