In just over a week, Unsound Festival will hold its sixth edition in Krakow, Poland. The festival will feature a unique lineup of film screenings, workshops and performances by some of today’s most forward thinking electronic acts. The celebration will run a week long and has already been deemed one of the top festivals in October by Resident Advisor.

One of the more notable additions to this year’s festival will be the contributions of word-renown music journalist Philip Sherburne. Sherbune will participate as the lead in two of the scheduled panels, including a workshop aimed at aspiring writers. Philip has also produced an exclusive mix (for Modyfier’s Process Series Podcast) featuring music by nearly all of the participating producers including Robert Henke (Monolake), Martyn, Ben Frost, Stars of the Lid, Biosphere, Klimek and Marcel Dettmann.

Unsound has also teamed up with experimental/ambient/dub label ~scape to release a free downloadable album featuring artists such as Pole, Jacek Sienkiewicz and Pavel Ambiont. Physical copies of the CD will be available at participating events.listeners also liked:

Those in the Berlin area this weekend should make a point to drop by club Maria, where over 100 participating artists will be celebrating the largest Netaudio Festival to date!

“From the 8th to the 11th of October 2009, Netaudio Berlin will be gathering the international netaudio community for a four-day music and conference festival in Berlin, under the title “East meets West”. 2009 will mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain. The event will take place at Maria, a venue situated immediately on the former Berlin ‘death strip’ once dividing the city and the world into eastern and western hemispheres.”

Plenty of panels and workshops are scheduled during the day and an exciting number of Dewtone supported producers will be performing at night including Alex Meshkov, Pheek, D. Diggler, Goldwill, SCSI-9, Holger Flinsch, Marko Fürstenberg, Klartraum, Falko Brocksieper and Jimmy Behan. Full lineup and schedule can be found here.

The following Thursday it started to rain and the temperatures dropped considerably. Maybe Summer was on its way out sooner than I thought. Thankfully I didn’t have any immediate plans to be outside. My schedule was jammed full and I would be flying out Sunday night, I wasn’t about to let a little rain stand in the way.

My first stop was to a lounge called Moomia, located close to Manhattan’s financial district. Oleg Slepak (Animaltek) was playing downstairs in the VIP room. I walk in and there is a tomb in the middle of the room, incense burning, pillows on every seat, candles on every table and hookahs being smoked as Slepak plays deep, wobbly techno to content supporters. One of the coolest settings I’ve ever experienced, but where was everyone? No more than 10 people in this party left me feeling how this random Canadian tourist was able to stumble upon this gem, yet so many were missing out.

Due to the poor turnout, the party was shut early. I decided to zip over to Bar 13 again, where I knew Less was throwing a Clink Recordings party featuring Insideout. I arrived at about 2:30am, but I immediately felt late. There were about 20 people left and the party was winding down. The music was nice and I met some great people, but reality was starting to sink in regarding how small the community here actually was.

I figured Friday would be a different story, especially since Magda was in town. It was off to Williamsburg, Brooklyn to a space located at 213 North 8th Street. Nice big warehouse-style space, hardwood floors and white walls soaked up the eye candy being projected around the room. Andrew Vogt did a fine job opening and by the time Magda arrived, the room was completely packed. It was a big room and the sound really struggled to fill it. Maybe I’m nit picking, but I expected more from a company that refers to themselves as Flawless Sound. I had to get myself right up close to enjoy Magda’s set. Layered, chunky, twisted, raw, superb.

Saturday turned out to be one of the best nights of my entire trip. I had found out last minute Joseph Capriati had been flown in from Napels for a secret Biatchcorp party on the west side of Manhattan. The party was located on the top floor of an art gallery space, where an open terrace was providing VJ Eliana Quntero plenty of room to project her art onto the building beside us. I had also bumped into some familiar faces from Thursday night, one of whom was gracious enough to introduce me to many in her community, including Thomas Hildebrand (Microcosm) and Eric Cloutier (The Bunker).

I would end up hoping in a cab to try and catch Lawrence (Dial), who was playing all the way in Clinton Hill. I arrived, only to be teased with 20 minutes of his set before he hoped off. Joseph Capriati had not started playing yet, so after a few greetings it was back in a cab and straight to my previous destination. Capriati’s set was full of energy and exactly what I was hoping for. During his set I was informed that Thomas Hildebrand was scheduled to play with his good friend Ezekiel Honig the next day on Govenors Island.

Now I’ve been a long time supporter of Microcosm and Anticipate, their unique contributions to new media have certainly helped set new standards for creative expression. Despite not having any time to sleep, I headed up to Harlem, grabbed my bags and made it back in time to catch the ferry over with them. It was clear and hot again, just like the day I arrived. We found ourselves in an open park square, where I spent the last few hours enjoying open air electronic improvisation. I even had the pleasure of meeting Joshua Ott (Superdraw) and I did my best to encourage him to release his brilliant software to the hands of many eager visual artists.

It was an honor to meet all of them and it appeared they were gaining some momentum with their work (much deserved). I couldn’t think of a better way to end my trip, as it certainly left me anxious to return (and I will).

A hot and sunny forecast was the best thing I could have hoped for as I flew into New York city for Labor Day weekend. This was my first time to the Big Apple and I was determined to make the most out of a summer that was now starting to show clear signs of aging. Plenty was on the agenda, including the highly anticipated first annual Electric Zoo Festival on Randall’s Island Park.

I didn’t have much time to rest after checking into my hostel in the East Village, Pezzner and Brendon Moeller were scheduled to play at Cielo club that night. Seattle’s Dave Pezzner is one of my favorite up and coming house acts of the last year and it was an unexpected treat to hear him play before Decibel Festival. Cielo’s sexy, intimate space powered by a Funktion One sound system certainly got things started on the right foot.

I jumped on a train over to Brooklyn, where Octave One was headlining at Public Assembly (The Bunker). I have heard a lot positive things about this long running electronic night, their podcast has been known to feature some of the industry’s most cutting edge acts. Public Assembly was as dark and underground a space as anyone would hope for, but the oldschool detroit-style production had me begging for the fidelity I enjoyed earlier.

Last year’s Minitek Festival ended in disappointment for many. Venues were shut down and audio difficulties forced many acts to lose their slots. Would the Zoo suffer from a similar fate? It didn’t appear to be the case as I walked up to a well organized gate, listening to the thump of a bass drum echo in the clear sky. Randall’s Island provided plenty of space for the 4 stages and I was already happy with how everything sounded. I knew I would be spending most of my time at the “Sunday School Hilltop” where Paco Osuna, Marco Carola, Danny Teneglia, Audion, Victor Calderone, Steve Bug, Richie Hawtin and Speedy J were all scheduled to play. Only once did I have to jump back and forth from the Hilltop on Sunday to catch James Holden rock the Riverside Arena. All of them delivered.

Victor Calderone was the highlight of the festival for me, his performance was practically flawless. I was anxious to see Nathan Fake perform, but his set ended up feeling a bit disconnected, leaving some of the audience left struggling to keep afloat. Richie Hawtin (who in a recent Resident Advisor interview felt he was on his way down) played well, but the overuse of his bass kills kept pulling me out of the moment. Overall, the event will be viewed as a complete success and I will look forward to their plans for next year. I hope they make more of an effort to incorporate a stronger visual element within each stage. All of the tents felt bland, even the main stage left little for the eyes to revel in.

The Zoo ended early each night, so it was vital to arrange plans to let the festivities continue. On Saturday, I had an opportunity to attend a secret Resolute party in Brooklyn featuring Adultnapper and Kiki (Bpitch Control), but I opted to attend the “official” after party at Pacha. Danny Teneglia and Paco Osuna got the call to finish things off and since I had enjoyed their sets considerably, I decided to play it safe. Though it was a necessity for me to experience famous Pacha NYC at some point during my stay, part of me felt I could have made a better choice that night. A dark and crowded Pacha left little reminiscence of the friendly open air vibe I had just come from.

Thankfully the folks behind Resolute NYC had another party lined up on Sunday at Bar 13 hosting Dumb Unit DJs Jeremy P. Caulfield and Cesare vs. Disorder. Groovy, minimal, tech-funk flavors had everyone gliding effortlessly after a long weekend on their feet. I could have easily found myself satisfied till sunrise, but a generous lack of rest was starting to catch up with me. I had to hit the reset button and re-charge as I would be summoned again in just a few days, by the city that never sleeps.listeners also liked:

As the West experiences one of the most intense heat waves in recent history, I finally find myself content to be inside. July has been an eventful month and while I’ve admittedly kept the majority of my attention on kickdrums and hihats, soft tones continue to find and provide a therapeutic escape from the relentless pace of dance.

Last week I received a small package from Keith Kenniff containing unreleased Helios material, a live performance CD and a copy of Mint Julep’s, “Songs about Snow”. Needless to say the music is a fantastic addition to any collection and a must-have for all you Helios fans out there. Those interested in picking up these limited CDR releases can order them directly from Keith’s shop.

Marconi Union’s anticipated release on Bine Music has now dropped. You can still grab 12 of their (previously) free releases for a couple of quid here. Somehow I managed to miss Markus Guentner’s pivotal 2005 release, “1981″ (Kompakt) until now. Two of my favorite tracks off that incredible album have been added to the rotation. I’ve also added new music by Intrusion and taken a selection off the third installment of, “Soma Coma” (Soma Recordings).

Earlier in the month I had the pleasure of attending BC’s 10th annual Soundwave Music Festival in Ucluelet. With an evident focus on local talent, the festival was able to provide budding stars with an opportunity to play to thousands of attendees camping on Vancouver Island’s captivating coastline. One of my highlights certainly had to be Calgary’s Jon Delerious with his tasteful selection of deep progressive grooves. Despite shamefully missing out on a set by Reagenz (Move D & Spacetime Continuum), the positive feedback I received regarding their performance was enough to ensure my presence at their next stop: Decibel Festival. listeners also liked:

With a new website and a preliminary line up announcement, the anticipation is already starting to build for this year’s Decibel Festival. The 6th Annual Decibel International Festival of Electronic Music, Visual Art and New Media will take place on September 24th - 29th in Seattle.

So far, the line up looks promising. I am surprised at the number of dubstep artists brought on board though. Despite the growing popularity of the style, it still remains quite niche. It’ll be interesting to see how Decibel fans react to an influx of darker flavors. Expect artists like Boxcutter, Martyn and BBC Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs to deliver the best the genre has to offer.

I’m thrilled to see that Keith Kenniff (aka Helios) will be returning (after a wonderful performance at Decibel’s gala dinner) to perform as Goldmund. Decibel favorites KiloWatts, Lusine and Pezzner are back as well. Other highlights include Mikael Stavöstrand, Monolake, Move D, Tadeo and the legendary Wighnomy Brothers.

Decibel will be offering a limited number of discounted passes from now until July 24th. You can purchase a discounted festival pass here ($50 off the regular pass price!). Dozens of additional artists will be announced later this summer.listeners also liked:

Toytronic makes its debut today. Fans of early Warp and Planet Mu will enjoy the classic style of production (including a hidden gem by Mr. Projectile). The label has coincidentally rekindled its flame in 2009 after a hiatus of nearly 4 years.

There is a nice feature on Jon Hopkins over at Emusic in relation to his stellar full length release on Domino last month. I’ve added new music from 12k, Boltfish Recordings and received a charming summer tune from an up and coming act out of San Francisco known as Blenka. Timeless. A word not often used to describe a genre that continues to redefine its identity with each revolutionary step in sound technology. Music has certainly proved that there is a formula to execute in which music can be appreciated and loved over an extended period of time. While so many are driven to inspire through creativity, we can’t forget the importance of touching the heart.

Morr Music has spent the last 10 years earning it’s reputation as one of the focal points for electronica (despite its equally commendable role within the indie rock community). With an evident focus on the singer/songwriter, the label has helped encourage the use of playful electronics in a familiar, heartfelt setting.

Last month Morr Music delighted fans with a double-disc compilation featuring all new music from signature artists like Lali Puna, ISAN and People Press Play. A relatively young, UK based project by the name of Seavault shine with their contribution to the release. Duo Antony Ryan (ISAN) and Simon Scott deliver a modest piece, layered with warm vocals and radiant synthetics. Listen!

As more of the world starts to accept and understand the role of electronics in music, the same way we accept the guitar, more of us will be touched by the ambition of those who have continued to search for a deeper form of expression. For those who are new to Morr Music, take the time to acknowledge just how far back their catalog goes and appreciate a sound that will, without a doubt, still be relevant for many years to come.listeners also liked:

Alright we’re good to go. After a few expected hiccups, we’ve managed to upgrade Wordpress and get just about everything back to normal. Thanks to new cache optimizations and a various other fixes, browsing the website should be noticeably faster.

This time of year always caters to the influx of festival goers anxious to enjoy music under the sun. Things have already slowed down a bit due to the season, but there has certainly been movement behind the scenes.

Dewtone’s dance catalog has been slightly re-worked to provide breathing room for a young sister project that will help honor a community of producers and djs that are stimulating dancefloors around the globe (I will let you know when it’s live!). Those who have been active listeners of the stream shouldn’t notice much of a difference as the majority of changes were made to the website archives.

I’m still finding plenty of great music for this format. Thank you to those who continue to introduce your work through Myspace, the growth has been keeping me busy for weeks. I plan to do a quick wrap up of some of the latest stuff to hit the stream very soon.

In the vastly expanding world of electronic music, labels generally take one of two positions: A focus on the dancefloor, or a focus on the experimental side of composition. Few labels have yet to take both and continue do it as well as the team behind Persona Records.

Steadily active since 2005 (after a brief hiatus in 2003) Persona has helped introduce new and exciting ways to enjoy techno, thanks mostly to the ambition of Stewart Walker, Marco Tonni (Touane) and Sam Rouanet (Reynold). While they’re best known for delivering passionate performances to dancefloors around the world, Persona’s rich catalog serves up plenty of juicy audio that works comfortably on and off stage.

Iain and I are going to develop a more intuitive system that will provide new music an equal chance at hitting the charts vs. long time favorites. While we look into that, I thought it was a suitable time to reset the totals and start fresh. Plenty of new music has been added this year and it will be nice to see some new faces in the top 20.

I realize updates on the blog have slowed down a bit lately, but a lot of great music is still crossing my path. I look forward to sharing it with you by the end of the month. In the meantime, Jimmy Behan was gracious enough to send me a promo copy of his latest album, “Echo Garden” now available from Audiobulb Records. Absolutely beautiful! Our ambient catalog continues to flourish with Taylor Deupree’s return to 12k. Letna (Zymogen), Gigi Masin (Laverna) and Reii (Kahvi) help keep the netlabel love alive.

In techno: Intrusion has to be the highlight this time around. New additions to our Mobilee, Poker Flat and Bpitch Control playlists, while up and coming dub techno label ZeECc make their first appearance with music from Upwellings.

It’s hard to sum up the legacy that Warp Records has already left behind. The industry is still basking in the timeless compositions that have paved the way for many of the artists we love today. Warp has firmly established a leadership role in the field of sonic and visual arts, making them one of the most openly respected creative organizations in the world.

Warp is celebrating 20 years and they’re doing it in a big way. Not only are they holding a series of events that will merge music, film and art in high-end locations across the globe, but they are also reaching out to fans and asking for your vote in helping create the definitive Warp Records album.

Count on appearances by most of the iconic favorites: Richard James (Aphex Twin), Plaid, LFO, Boards of Canada, Squarepusher and Autechre. Elaine and I will be attending the first ever Decibel Festival Fundraiser Gala on Wednesday, May 6th at The Triple Door. Much like Mutek’s, just this past week, the goal is to help raise money for their big event in September.

I’d like to welcome a few selections from the 12k catalog to our database. This label may be a stranger to some of you, but it has long been a luminary to avid followers of contemporary ambient composition.

Founded in 1997 by New York native Taylor Deupree, the project continues to flourish thanks to a formidable roster of international experimentalists. Shuttle358, Christopher Willits, Savvas Ysatis and Fourcolor all help set the stage in this week’s introduction.

Deupree also helps manage sub-labels Line and Term, both of which act as an expansion to 12k’s original concept, documenting ongoing developments in experimental audio. There is plenty to explore, so start here! and if you get hooked, be sure to visit 12k’s online store.

Bpitch Control, a favorite label of ours, has entered into its 10th year. After nearly 150 releases, Ellen Allien’s initial concept has grown to foster a meritorious respect within the industry.

Contributions from critically acclaimed artists like Apparat, Sasha Funke and Paul Kalkbrenner have helped fuel one of the most active labels to ever come out of Berlin. The recent release by Telefon Tel Aviv is a great example of a label that refuses to ignore diversity and consistently demonstrates a, “don’t get stuck on one style” attitude.

It’s encouraging to acknowledge the risks this team continues to take by offering a stage to some of the boldest individuals who’ve continued to defy the boundaries of live composition. A couple of the leaders in the field this year have been Alva Noto and Atom TM, two artists apart of a network known as Raster-Noton, dedicated to experimental electronics.

Other highlights so far include Brendon Moeller (Beat Pharmacy) and Ernesto Ferreyra, who are sure to provide quality entertainment in the dance department. Wolfgang Voigt will debut his project GAS on North American soil and Thomas Felhman will also perform live (for anyone that can’t catch him at this year’s Communikey).

Those who are itching for a taste of Mutek will no doubt be looking forward to the mini-tour that will soon make its way across Canada in April.

Pier Bucci, Andy Stott and Claro Intecto (Modern Love), MLZ and Ezekiel Honig (Anticipate) are a few of the names who will join up with local talent for performances in Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton and Vancouver!

In just over a month, Communikey will hold the second annual installment of their Festival for Electronic Arts and their lineup looks even more promising than before.

“Communikey events provide creative forums for the exploration of electronic music and new media arts in intimate environments, reflecting the global organism that is technology based fine-arts. The Festival hosts a 3-day contribution to these arts. Software workshops, installations, a film screening and panel discussion lay the ground-work for thought and discourse.”

Over 35 new media artists and electronic musicians will be on site including Thomas Fehlmann, Morgan Packard, Nordic Soul (Decibel Festival), Christopher Willits, Andy Stott, Ejival (Static Discos), MLZ, Kilowatts and Mr Projectile. Those anywhere close to Colorado will not want to miss out on what is sure to be an inspirational display by a few of the most innovative leaders in our industry.

I’m very proud to introduce Field Rotation, a promising upcoming ambient act out of Germany with a selection off his upcoming album, “Ennea”.

Popnoname returns to Kompakt’s “Pop Ambient” series with the beautiful starry, “Nightliner” and Lazzich’s serene contribution to Dalaki’s, “Remote Thoughts” compilation also makes the cut.

Meerestief delivers a massive remix by Alex Niggemann to compliment our growing house catalog. Murmur makes its Dewtone debut with Nick Curly’s latest EP and El Farouki’s, “Unknown Gut” has recently been featured on Volume 4 of Night Drive’s “best of” series.

On the indie front: Telefon Tel Aviv’s latest full length release on Bpitch Control is turning heads as they break away from their broken-beat past and deliver a widely pop-influenced sound.

Quality activity in the netlabel scene as powerhouse Thinner comes through again with a full length ambient release by swedish producer Motionfield. A free track by Alexandre Navarro is one of the highlights on Mandorla’s latest compilation. Deep in the catalog of Russian netlabel Electronica emerges a lovely piece of ambience by Nikos F.

ghostly international’s 10 year anniversary tour

I managed to get a hold of Missy over at Ghostly.com for more information regarding Ghostly International’s 10 year anniversary plans. With dates in San Fransico (March 6th) and Los Angeles (March 8th) already confirmed, I was anxious to know where they’ll end up next.

According to Missy, plans to take the tour to cities like New York, DC, Chicago, Denver, Seattle, Vancouver and Portland are already in the works, but will most likely take place closer to fall when everyone’s schedule meets.

I realize that seems like quite the hiatus, but never fear. Those itching to be apart of the “Ghostly” experience will be encouraged to know that there is a high probability of a pitstop at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival in May!

There is still plenty of time to get your vote in for the 5th Edition of the Qwartz Electronic Music Awards!

Qwartz aims to expose new music and support the global development of contemporary electronic and digital culture. All entries are saved to become part of a collection that will be accessible to the public via the Qwartz portal.

We were happy to see long standing netlabel Thinner earn a nomination for both album and compilation of the year. Alexandre Navarro earned one for his work on his latest album, “Arcane” and a remix of “Fractales” merited Apparat’s first Qwartz appearance.

Kompakt, Night Drive Music, Shitkatapult and Warp Records will all join in the battle for this year’s best label. Winners will be announced at the Cirque d’Hiver Bouglione (Paris) in early April. Show your support and vote by March 16th for a chance to win a one year subscription to The Wire!
