DJ Rekha releases Pyar Baile Video

DJ Rekha's mission of bringing genre-defying music to discerning ears and global dance floors was taken to a new level with the launch of her label Beat Bazaar Music in November 2011. The label's first single, "Pyar Baile," is now viral with the video release.

"Pyar Baile" is a co-production by DJ REKHA and DAVE SHARMA. The vocals have been laid down by MEETU CHILANA and ZUZUKA PODEROSA. The video features appearances by all the artists involved and also includes a special cameo by PANJABI MC.

"In this video, we wanted to convey the duality of the song as Meetu and Zuzuka's vocals are on the record. The idea was to contrast the vocalists visually as they work in the song while making the video looks like it can be anywhere," DJ Rekha says.

DJ Rekha has had years of success with iconic New York Club nights including Mutiny, Bollywood Disco, and the legendary Basement Bhangra, which just celebrated 15 years. In a different field, Rekha has had several stints doing sound design for NPR, and even two plays, one of which is Tony Award winning. More recently, Rekha has performed gigs at the White House, and is teaching at NYU. Just when the world thinks there is nothing left for one of the most powerful South Asians in the U.S. to do, as dubbed by Newsweek, Rekha has a new venture up her sleeve.

‘Uth Records’: Tunes of disappointment

The year 2011 marked the discovery of various musical gems through the emergence of Pakistani talent shows like “Uth Records”. The show played a key role in turning raw Pakistani talent into seasoned musicians and singers of today. Every episode had a unique flavour and charm; as it showcased a different musician, singing a different genre, belonging to a different ethnic background and representing a different part of the country.

From the catchy tunes of Natasha Ejaz to the folk rock belted out by Yasir & Jawad, every artist created a cult following of their own, becoming a regular feature on the local radio channels. Of course, none of this could have happened without music producers Omran Shafique and Gumby who were integral in the success of the first season of “Uth Records”.

So when 2012 started and the second season of the show was announced, there were even higher expectations from it. However, this time, there was a slight variation in the line-up. Gumby had taken over Shafique’s spot as the solo producer of the show. The fact that Gumby was producing music left many confused as he is better known for his drumming skills than anything else. However, people had been talking about his creative input in producing “Coke Studio” for a long while and this would’ve been a great opportunity for him to put his talent to test.

However, Gumby couldn’t come even close to what was expected from a seasoned musician like him. With artists like Jarar Malik, Affaq Mushtaq, XXI, Sara Haider, Orangenoise and Rahim Saranjam Khan who featured on the show, only two managed to stand out — Khan and Mushtaq. The rest of the artists made no lasting impression and were not extraordinary by any means.

Shafique sorely missed

One thing that was obvious from the show was that most songs lacked soul and seemed similar to the rough cut of a film which was selected for a worldwide premiere. While younger artists are known for coming up with idealised and amateur approaches to music, it is the producer’s job to tweak and tailor their passion into something worth listening to. But, except for Khan’s renditions; Gumby wasn’t really able to make the songs or the artists memorable. By letting a band like Orangenoise, which has been around for quite some time, perform the same stuff in their old style, he defeated the real purpose of the show.

The real art of producing a youth show lies in creating masterpieces out of raw talent. But this fact seemed lost on Gumby this season. Shafique was sorely missed because had he been part of the production process, many artists featured on the show could have benefitted from it.

Gumby, camera shy?

Taking the musical element of the show aside, Gumby wasn’t able to hold his forte in front of the camera. Audiences could’ve surely done without his sweeping statements like, “Pop music tou do crore saalon sae chala araha hai” and some of his inappropriate jokes.

Farhan Saeed: Back with a bang

Singer Farhan Saeed has always had the looks and the voice to make it big in showbiz, but what he had lacked in his music were good lyrics and an unforgettable melody. Maybe that was the reason why some of his solo endeavours, especially songs like “Khwahishon”, couldn’t really give him the right start.

However, all that has changed with his latest single and third solo track “Pee Jaoon”, which has spread like wildfire across the country. For the past one week, all the Pakistani music channels have been playing this song, and in no time it has climbed up the number one spot on music charts.

“Pee Jaoon” definitely has the band Jal’s vibe to it and it clearly reflects that Saeed and his producer Saad Sultan, who used to play sessions for Jal concerts, have learnt a lot from Gohar Mumtaz, the producer and songwriter of Jal.

Although “Pee Jaoon” might not be loved by the fans of Pakistani pop rock music as it leans towards commerciality, Saeed has finally come up with a song which is memorable. With a combination of sentimental and romantic lyrics, mixed with Saeed’s soulful voice and a catchy melody, the song has all the ingredients to rule the hearts of listeners.

However, the real cherry on top is the voice of female vocalist Momina Mustehsan, who features along with Saeed, in this romantic duet. Mustehsan had created quite a stir with her cover of Junoon’s “Sajna” which appeared in the band’s 20th anniversary album. From her punk rock efforts in previous songs to her semi- classical/pop sound in “Pee Jaoon”, Mustehsan has definitely covered a lot of ground as a dynamic singer.

And finally, one must give credit to the producer Sultan who finally managed to help Saeed put together something original and worthy of listening.

{youtube}AQ-HLLrOd7g{/youtube}

Mauj to make a comeback

Pakistani band Mauj is finally making a return following a long hiatus since the band’s debut album Now in Technicolor, which was released in 2009. Vocalist and guitarist Omran Shafique, the man behind Mauj, disclosed that the band has started working on a new album and they aim to release some good music by the end of the year.

Mauj, which initially included Mohsin Atif as the bassist and co-lyricist, now has a different line-up including the Co-Ven boys Hamza Jafri, Sameer Ahmed and Sikander Mufti. The new line-up, which has been performing under various banners in the past, will provide a unique identity for the band, says Shafique. “I don’t think that the process of making music ever stopped; it’s an ongoing process and we hope to bring good music again,” says the guitarist.

For the love of music

While explaining his passion for music, Shafique pointed out that he was settled in Texas, America, but decided to move to Pakistan only to pursue music as a career. “I wanted to move back at the time to see what I could contribute as a musician,” says Shafique.

The guitarist, who has over the years made a career as both a session player and producer for shows like “Uth Records”, maintains that the band will be a creative outlet since it has never been intended for commerciality.

His announcement comes as a big surprise for the music industry, which has struggled to find any originality of late. While most bands these days avoid investing in an entire album, Shafique intends on working towards a 10-single album but is not yet sure about the details of how the album will be released. “I am a creative person and various songs routinely play in my head. I probably have five to six albums planned in my head.”

Shafique explains that the band’s philosophy is to try and produce music that’s new and has never been made in Pakistan. “The band’s identity has always been its name which has two meanings; a wave and the second one is a reference to something fun,” says Shafique. The guitarist further adds that his experiences (stints at “Coke Studio” and “Uth Records” as well as working with music giants like Ali Azmat) will shape the outcome of the album to a great extent. “For this album, the goal is to do something more experimental and fun, something that has a new sound and has not been done in Pakistan.”

Meanwhile, while speaking about the current music scene, Shafique said he is pleased at the fact that several young bands such as Poor Rich Boy in Lahore, Orangenoise and Mole, have stepped up and are creatively adding a different sound to the rock scene in the country.

Google increases Gmail to 10GB of free storage — double what Google Drive gets

To celebrate the introduction of Google's new cloud storage service, Google Drive, they're simultaneously bumping free Gmail storage to 10GB. That's right, Gmail already had one-and-a-half as much free storage as Google Drive, and now it has twice as much!

However, if you also pay for Google Drive, that gets bumped again to 25GB.

Today, we're happy to announce that we're increasing everyone's free storage in Gmail from 7.5 GB to 10 GB (and counting) to celebrate today's launch of Google Drive. The increase will take effect over the next 24 hours. We hope you all enjoy the little bump!

The disparity between free Gmail and free Google Drive is a bit perplexing. Is Google encouraging us to inefficiently store most of our content in harder to access, impossible to collaborate in Gmail rather than Google Drive, which was purpose-built for sharing and searching? Have they simply not thought this through? Or is there some plan at work that will one day make one giant pool for all our Googlestuffs?

Who knows. It's free. It's embiggened. And that's all there is to it

‘Satyamev Jayate’ has made life tough for me: Aamir Khan’s wife Kiran Rao

But Kiran feels sad that she couldn’t be a part of the show Filmmaker and superstar Aamir Khan’s wife Kiran Rao says the actor’s new TV show Satyamev Jayate has made life tough for her as he has started bringing work home.

“This show has made my jeena haram (life tough) on many levels because Aamir has worked on the show night and day and in my house,” the 38-year-old said. “So my house has been full of writers and people from Star (Plus), and Aamir and they have all the big team in my house day and night. So, I am waiting for the show to come on air and slowly, hopefully my life will also go back to normal,” she added.

Satyamev Jayate will go on air on Star Plus on May 6. The concept of the show has been kept under wraps, but its theme song is receiving a positive response. Rao also admits to being in love with it. “Satyamev Jayate is an amazing song. I really loved it and they went all over the country to shoot it, which was really exciting,” she said, adding that she regrets not being a part of the show. “(I was) Very sad that I couldn’t be a part of his show. It’s been such a journey for Aamir. The promos I hope reached out to the people and people will watch the show,” she said.

Satyamev Jayate will mark Aamir’s debut on the small screen. It is unique as it will be the first ever programme to go live simultaneously on a Star Plus and national broadcaster DD1. While Aamir has been busy with the show, Rao has been spending time with their five-month-old son Azad (who was included in one of the promos of Satyamev Jayate without Kiran’s knowledge). She says motherhood is keeping her away from starting anything new. “I am actually going to begin writing something. I hope I have the head space to start writing.

I am still very much a full-time mother hoping to find the space to work and write something new,” said Rao, who became a mother in December last year through surrogacy. Her last film as producer was Delhi Belly and she made her directorial debut with Dhobi Ghat.
