We all know that present-day cellular phones can provide its users with the the sound of their own heartbeat. But do you know that their is an ongoing initiative right now to let phone users feel the throbbing itself?

There are a couple of companies who want to replace those crude vibration motors in today's phones and tablets with something that provides a much wider range of sensations, allowing users to feel the rumble of a Harley or the reverberation of a shotgun blast. The new technology can even let phone users feel the outlines of a button on the screen.

At the International Consumer Electronics Show, the gigantic gadget conclave in Las Vegas this week, a company called Artificial Muscle Inc. demonstrated how it can make mobile devices shake and rattle with great realism, employing a technology that uses plastics that function like muscles.

The company showed off an iPhone it had modified by placing one of its Vivitouch "motors" inside. The phone shook as it ran a simple ball-rolling game. The plastic muscle provided the feeling not just of the ball hitting the walls of a maze, but of the slight vibration it made while rolling freely across the floor.

When it was used for typing, the phone gave a buzzing sensation that confirmed each press of the virtual keys.

In another demonstration, a Vivitouch motor shook a modified Xbox controller to allow the user to feel what it's like to hold a beating heart. In another instance, it let the user experience the signature rumble of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle starting up.

The vibration engines that go into today's phones and game controllers consist of an electric motor that spins a metal weight. They take time to start up and are effective at only one frequency. That means they are unable to provide varying sensations. It's pretty much the same rumble or buzz every time.

Here's one good news for those who think mining companies are a bane to the environment. Norwegian-based Intex Resources Philippines Inc. and Aglubang Mining Corp. has embarked on a social program known as Livelihood Enhancement Agro-Forestry project (LEAF). This initiative entails replanting of various varieties of trees in line with their corporate goal of propagating safe and green mining.

The tree planting project is not only meant for the conservation and rehabilitation of the ecological system, but also to provide community livelihood as well. To date, the proponents have planted about 500,000 seedlings from their nurseries and planted over 300,000 trees. They have responded swiftly to the call of the government to participate in its Greening Program by committing, through the Chamber of Mines, to plant 600,000 trees.

Both companies are affiliates of Intex Resoures ASA, a publicly listed company based in Oslo, Norway. They are the main proponents of the Mindoro nickel project, which, if realized, will bring an investment of US$ 2.5B and generate 10,000 direct employments during construction and 2,000 direct employments during operation with its attendant multiplier effect.

As we try to celebrate the Holiday Season, I would like to appeal to everyone to try to do what they can in helping the victims of the worst flooding to hit Mindanao in recent memory. According to the Philippine Red Cross on 17 December 2011, the death toll at this time has already reached 440.

The government has already mobilized about 20,000 soldiers in a huge rescue and relief operation across the stricken north coast of the island of Mindanao, but we all know that this not enough. Residents of surviving families in needs our help. Many are still searching for their lost relatives. It was estimated that about 215 are still missing in Cagayan de Oro city and 144 residents in nearby Iligan city.

The photo you above hopes to explain the gravity of the situation. It was posted by blogger and Twitter user "Mindanaoan." It was a TwitPic photo of an unidentified man in Consolacion, Cagayan de Oro, weeping as he clutched the muddied body of his drowned daughter to his chest.

Among those that needs critical and immediate care at this time are the children. Aid worker Crislyn Felisilda informed the media that there is a need to care of the children who had became separated from their families or lost their parents. "Many children are looking for their loved ones... (and children were) crying and staring into space."

Rosal Agacac, a 40-year-old mother, was begging authorities to help find her two children after their shanty was swept to the sea. "Please President Noynoy, help me," she cried, holding a candle at a spot where their house stood before the floods, referring to President Benigno Aquino.

Let's not wait for the situation to get worse. We all know, based on our experience, that the suffering is just beginning. Diseases could soon set in if not enough effort is made to secure potable water and healthy food. Let us celebrate Christmas by helping those who badly need our help.

A Ferrari Drive to Remember

If you think this is a simple traffic accident involving ordinary vehicles, then you have not been reading car blogs lately. What you see above is part of traffic accident involving eight Ferraris, a Lamborghini and a few Mercedes-Benzes last Monday (5 December 2011) in Japan. The estimated cost: more than US$ 1 million.

Any car enthusiasts around the globe looking at the road coated with Italian red metal sauce is enough to make them cringed. It is definitely not the sight for those who are squeamish about totaled supercars.

Initial reports said that there were some 14 cars involved in the chain-reaction crash on an expressway named China Road in Yamaguchi prefecture, leaving 10 people with minor injuries. While the injuries were light, several of the vehicles appear totally destroyed.

Why were there that many supercars plying this route at the same time? Apparently, the group is heeding the call for a meet-up in Hiroshima with other supercar owners.

Why they all took the slower and thicker path offered by the expressway? Nobody can say, but some people who witness the incident thought that the group is trying to show their wares to those who cannot afford their lifestyle.

Unfortunately, that attempt to showboat backfired horridly when a 60-year-old businessman from Fukushima driving a Ferrari F430 attempted to pass a Toyota Prius, but instead hit the guardrail. That lone stupidity set off a chain reaction among the cars driving in a tight formation behind the lead Ferrari, eventually wrapping up seven other Ferraris — namely a 360 Modena, F355 and a white Testarossa — along with a Lamborghini Diablo and a couple of high-end Mercedes. The Prius sustained some rear bumper damage, but escaped relatively unharmed.

Since 2009, the number of outstanding shares in the SPDR Gold Trust, the most popular exchange-traded gold fund, has climbed about 33 percent.

During this uncertain times and fluctuating inflation rates, owning gold in diversified portfolio seems to be the logical choice. Demand for gold has increased significantly. Its price is going up because people are buying it. People are buying it because its price is going up.

However, it must be clear that when buyers trade for gold, they are not investing in gold ira. They are speculating with gold. The yellow metal is not like a stock or a bond. Buying gold offers no income, no dividend and no earnings. It is considered a store of value, an alternative currency that is safe beyond reproach wherever it is sold, but it is not cash in the bank, or even the mattress. Gold has no untapped intrinsic value; it is worth only what people are willing to pay for it.

Gold is a good speculation right now and nothing more. Because safe assets such as bonds and cash produce low yield for hungry prospectors, there is a great market initiative to take risk, which favors gold, silver, metals, commodities and many stocks.

Speculators buy gold because they fear that their other investments are not productive. For instance, when interest rates go to 0 percent, as they sometimes do, then Treasury Bills are worthless compared to purchasing the precious metal within a self-directed gold ira account. The rule is that, whenever the U.S. dollar continues to decline, gold will be a main beneficiary.

Ridiculously Priced BB Phone

I am starting to appreciate the features of a BlackBerry unit and would like to think myself as an upcoming fan. Currently I'm trying to acquire the new Bold 9900 which I thought to be the ultimate BBM-running device.

After scanning through the blogosphere, I found out that the limited edition Porsche Design P'9981 from BlackBerry tops the Bold 9900 not in features, but in price. The wrose thing is that I don't think it's justified to price it 10 times more since it offers nothing different.

In fact, P'9981 has the same internal specifications as the BlackBerry Bold 9900, but it sports a unique look and feel -- styled by Porsche Design. Only the design made it more expensive. Tough luck.

By the way, this is not a typo error. As slick as the P'9981 looks (for a BlackBerry), everyone I know is raising their eyebrows at the S$ 2,000 list price. I understand the appeal of limited-edition luxury electronics, but usually when a phone costs this much, it's covered in 14k gold or adorned with diamonds.

Uniqlo Coming to Philippines

Filipino shoppers and clothing enthusiasts will soon feel excitement in the air, not really as a result of Christmas spirit, but because of the entry of a new player in the dynamic local retail market.

Uniqlo - Japan's leading clothing retail chain known for its high quality basic casual clothes than can be worn by anyone, anytime, anywhere - will soon land in the shores of Manila and open its first ever outlet in the country.

SM Retail recently announced that it has agreed to a basic framework for establishing a joint venture company with Fast Retailing through its subsidiary Market Watch Investment Corporation.

Based on this agreement, the new joint venture company will be established in the Philippines in the year end of 2011, with the first Uniqlo store to open in Manila during the first quarter of 2012.

Uniqlo has designed uniforms for Japan's athletes in 1998. 2002 and 2004 for the Olympic Games.
