One important aspect of discipling our children is to give them a love for missions. As our children learn about the beauty of the gospel, we should also celebrate with them those who are actively bringing the good news to unreached hearts. Here is a shortlist of six ways you can grow your kids’ love of missions.

1. Pray for our Missionaries

Display the C’s and G’s prayer cards prominently in your house and pray for them regularly. In our home, we pray for a different missionary before our evening meal.

2. Eat Global Cuisine

Share new food experiences with your children and talk about the cultures the food comes from.

When you thank God for your food, pray for the culture that created the food; pray that God would expand his work among them and grow their churches.

3. Explore a Map or a Globe

Put a globe or a map in a place where your children frequent.

Talk through the different parts of the world. Show your children unreached regions like the 10/40 window and pray that God would send more missionaries to spread the gospel in places where there aren’t churches.

4. Read Books on Unreached People Groups

Read books like Window on the World and teach your children about other cultures and religions. Pray for each people group, that God would gain a great harvest from them and that he would save people from every tribe and nation of the world as he promised.

5. Study a Language

Now is the time to encourage your children to study a foreign language. Nothing imparts cultural appreciation quite like learning another language. Download a language app and have your children practice vocab. Help your children develop an appreciation for another culture and pray that God uses it for His kingdom.

6. Teach Them to Give towards Global Missions

Show your children that an important part of sending missionaries out is to financially support them while they are on the field. Look for opportunities to encourage your children to sacrifice their resources for the Great Commission.

Greetings Desert Springs Church from North Africa! We think of you often and pray that you would grow in humility, gentleness, patience, and in bearing with one another in love as you go out into the world as agents of reconciliation to our great God.

We have seen much growth in our church plant over the past few years as well as significant setbacks. But we are resolute that God is drawing worshippers to himself all over this world and specifically in our small city in North Africa. We want to see those worshippers be discipled, gather into groups, have qualified local leaders, regular teaching of God’s Word, administration of the Lord’s Supper and baptism, and further conversions and further church plants.

Just over two years ago we started meeting with three locals for worship and teaching under God’s Word in Arabic. This continued until Covid restrictions came into place last March. Since then, our local brother and sisters have had much difficulty in finding work and ways to provide for themselves and their families. Just as in Albuquerque, we too have seen many ups and downs regarding restrictions on the right to assemble which has affected our ability to meet. Not only that, but there have been personal issues that have hindered our meeting in the last year. Alice, one of the local ladies, was almost forced by her brother to marry a Muslim man that she did not want to marry. When that fell through, his constant berating sent her on a downward spiral into depression, and she went to live with her sister in another city for a time. Nancy, the other local sister, has been battling poor health and thus has not been able to meet. Kevin, the local brother, while being fairly faithful to meet with us, has not had any work for over a year. He is deeply discouraged. The government made a blanket ban on all meetings in December 2020. We have still sought to meet with these believers individually since that time. We are now seeing that mosques are open despite the ban on meetings, so we are trying to find a time that would be suitable for the locals to start meeting again.

Although the challenges in planting an Arabic speaking church have been numerous, by God’s grace we have seen great growth in our English-speaking church plant. We view this English-speaking church as temporary in nature. It is our hope that it will 1) serve as a model to the Arab church plant in how to function in a healthy and biblical way and 2) be a place where English speakers in our city can grow in their faith and be launched to do ministry. We are now eight adults (including two elders) and eight children.

We rejoice in God’s goodness to us over these last six years. We have been connected to three local believers who want to glorify Christ’s name in this city. We have had the opportunity to share our faith hundreds, if not thousands, of times. We have grown in our abilities to communicate in Arabic to such a degree we can have Arabic services. He has doubled the size of our English church, from four adults to eight, as we have welcomed four new workers into this harvest field over the last few months. We also have a number of local friends whom we engage regularly in spiritual conversations; many of these souls are seriously weighing the decision to follow Jesus.

The costs to follow Jesus here are incredibly high. We pray that through our face-to-face witness to them, they will see that the cost is nothing in comparison to the reward of serving our Savior King, the Lord Jesus.

The State of the Church Plant in North Africa

Building Wells in San Miguel

<figure class="

Each year San Miguel experiences a season of drought. To make their water supply even more complicated, their drought is preceded by a monsoon season, which brings with it floods that contaminate their drinking water with waste. As a result, when the drought comes, many Achi go thirsty or end up getting sick from drinking unclean water. This is why our water ministry to the Achi is so important.

Our ministry of bringing drinking water to the Achi regularly brings my mind back to John 4 where Jesus found himself thirsty and asking a woman for water from the well. But the story takes a sharp turn when we see that the reason Jesus came to the well was not to quench his own thirst, but the woman’s. Jesus showed her that it was only through him that she could find satisfaction and eternal life.

In a world where the unbelieving rich and privileged can easily turn a blind eye to their neighbors suffering in poverty, Jesus has shown us a better way. The Son of God left the riches of heaven to dwell among the poor and needy and to seek and to save the lost. Because we have tasted of this Living Water, we can bring His love to those who are hurting, and in so doing, allow them to see the One who alone can satisfy their every need.

Thanks to the generous donations from our church body, this past August we were able to raise over $9,000 to pay for the construction of two wells to be built in San Miguel Chicaj. However, due to Covid striking San Miguel particularly hard and the subsequent lock down, they have only recently been able to begin construction on this large project.

Please join me in continuing to keep the Achi in our prayers. May God quench the thirsty with the clean drinking water from these two wells. But even more so, may God quench the spiritual thirsty with the gospel and build his church among the Achi.

Christmas as an Opportunity

It’s hard to imagine that we are now weeks away from Christmas. One store I was in this weekend was already playing Christmas music. (Although it’s 2020, so I think many of us are fine with a change in scenery). Beyond the sentimentality and the wonder we experience as we celebrate the advent season, I love Christmas time for the ministry opportunities it brings. Even in our “post-Christian” culture, there are still some beautiful parts of Christmas that our culture has preserved from the Christian tradition. Perhaps one of the sweetest aspects of the American Christmas culture is the act of giving to those in need. This is a time of year when it is common (and even expected) to talk a lot about giving back, and many volunteer to serve those in need. It's wonderful that our culture still values sacrifice and giving to others, regardless of merit. We should use this cultural attribute as a bridge to the gospel by celebrating this culture of gift-giving and showing our neighbors how our God is a gift-giving God, who loved the world so much that He gave his Son to die in the place of sinners.

Navajo Community Christmas & Donating Presents

As many of you know, DSC has a wonderful tradition of giving gifts to needy families at Christmas. Through our yearly Community Christmas on the Rez, many Navajo families have been shown the love of Christ as we have provided them warm food, clothing, groceries, and even toys for their children. After receiving the gifts, they gather and sing Christmas carols and listen to a gospel sermon. This year we are again going to be good neighbors to the Navajo. We will set up Christmas trees in the foyer with hundreds of tags listing an item needing to be purchased. After the service this Sunday, you will have the opportunity to select tags and purchase a gift(s). You’ll then have until Sunday, November 29 to bring these items back here with the corresponding tag taped to them. We will have bins set up in the foyer to receive these presents.

We realize that some of you may not be able to attend church in person right now, so selecting a tag from the tree might be relatively tricky. Alternatively, you may call the church office or email josiah@dscabq.com and I will let you know what is left to be purchased, and you may drop off your present at the church during office hours.

Covid-Restrictions & Delivery of Presents to the Rez

Currently, the reservation is closed to outsiders on the weekends because of Covid. If the reservation opens up, we will be helping the two churches host their community Christmas events. We will be going to Good News on Saturday, December 12th and Cedar Hill on Sunday, December 20th. You can sign up to volunteer on our website or the DSC app. If the Reservation remains closed, the plan is that we will drop off the gifts along with firewood during the week, and the church will still have the Community Christmas but without volunteers from outside the reservation. These churches and their communities are thankful for your ministry to them.

Gifts For Los Ranchos Elementary Families

Finally, this year we would like to also receive presents to give to needy families at Los Ranchos Elementary School. On the Christmas trees in the foyer, you will find purple tags specific for Los Ranchos. They have requested that we simply provide board games for these children and their families. Just as with the gifts for the Navajo, we are asking that you kindly tape the tag(s) to the present(s) and drop them off in the bins set up in the foyer.

I am so thankful to partner with you as we love others in word and deed.

2020 started out strong with many International students engaged in home groups, Bible studies, hiking/sight-seeing groups, free English classes, and engaging with Americans as friendship partners. In March we had a retreat planned for new believers and seekers, and then COVID hit! At that point, the retreat was canceled and our four home groups each went to online meetings.

August, which is usually our busiest month, saw an unusually small number of International students arriving at UNM. We welcomed about 25% of the number we usually see and very few of those were arriving new from out of the country. Most were transfer students from other US universities. We expect to see the same small number in January. In spite of the current low numbers, we see God at work! Tonight, we are celebrating the baptism of a student who arrived at UNM as a nominal Christian and has awakened into the life of Jesus.

One of our four home groups is still meeting weekly while trying to stay within the current COVID safe practice guidelines. The remainder of our home group team is meeting with students individually to build relationships or to go deeper into Bible study. For example, there are several face-to-face Bible studies and online (Zoom) Bible studies. English Corner continues to meet using Zoom as well. We have approximately 10 students that gather each week to practice English.

New this semester is International Christian Fellowship. We have about ten people attending each week for worship, discipleship, and fellowship. Some of those attending are mature believers, some are coming from a nominal background, and others have not yet proclaimed faith in Jesus but are seriously seeking. In addition, we have seven to eight students being discipled in small groups. COVID has also given us the chance to connect with some students that are out of state or in their home country for Bible study and discipleship.

There are many ways for ISI volunteers to get involved while staying within COVID restrictions such as engaging students as friendship partners, taking students hiking or sight-seeing, inviting a couple of students over for dinner through the new Supper Club outreaches. Contact ISI at isiabq@isionline.org if you are unfamiliar with ISI and would like to get involved or if you are a current ISI volunteer looking for new ways to engage with students.

International Student Ministry at UNM

Sunday Liturgy, October 18, 2020

<figure class="

In the 2019-2020 school year, our volunteers at Los Ranchos Elementary School (LRES) hosted staff lunches, helped teachers in classrooms, played with kids at recess, and organized books in the library, among other things. It was the first year of our partnership, and we were ready to hit the ground running this year. But, God is sovereign over COVID and over elementary schools and that wasn’t his plan.

I’m thankful teachers are still teaching and students are still learning. We are still partnering with LRES to love our neighbors. We’ve let the staff know we’re still here. We’ve donated school supplies. We’ve brainstormed ways to work with LRES from a distance.

I’m also thankful for other local churches willing to share their neighbor-loving ideas with us, such as adopting teachers.

Adopt-a-Teacher is a simple way for us to acknowledge the hard, unseen work of teachers and encourage them through sending personal notes. Volunteers from DSC will be paired with a teacher (or other staff member) and will write a note of encouragement a minimum of three times per school year. If the volunteer wants to do more, such as send a gift card or other small gift, they may, but it’s not required.

I was a teacher for a couple of years, and through various classroom changes and rearranging, I kept a card taped above my desk that said, “You can do it!” It wasn’t so much those words that I needed, but the reminder that the giver of the card loved and supported me.

I can’t imagine teaching now via distance learning, and I don’t know what the hardest thing is for teachers or what’s keeping them up at night, but I know we can all use an encouraging word every now and then.

If you would like to adopt a teacher, please email me at pierce.tyche@gmail.com.

Adopt a Teacher, Love a Neighbor

Silent Auction: Help Us Build Two Wells for the Achi

<figure class="

It's easy to take clean water for granted. Since I have devoted my prayers this week for the Achi, I have noticed how many times I have been picky about what water I drink. I never even question whether the water I am drinking will make me sick. Or that the water I give my children could risk their life. Instead, I find myself dumping out good water because I had access to tastier water. Or if I’m in the church office, I add a little hot water to my bottle because the water dispensing machine makes the water too cold.

All that said, whatever commodities we grow up with, we tend to expect we will always have access to them, and can find ourselves disgruntled or even ungrateful if those simple daily commodities become lacking.

Globally, it’s not normal to have access to clean water. It’s also not normal to have parents, or friends, or neighbors that are Christians. We have been blessed with access to the gospel, and that is why we as a church must constantly push ourselves in prayer, in giving, and in going to the other parts of the world that don’t have access to someone who can tell them about Jesus. That is why we have Missions Emphasis Week. We desire to do whatever we can to get all of our members committed to expanding Christ’s witness around the globe. We call that spreading God’s glory broader and deeper.

Please be praying for the Achi church in Guatemala that God would grow them in the joy of Christ and that they may share that joy with the lost. If you want to financially support the building of the two wells, please participate in our silent auction at dscabq.com/mew.

Your gospel partner,

Josiah, Missions Minister

The Rez is normally in dire straights, but now this disaster has made things so much worse. One pastor who is helping distribute the food we are bringing said that people are living in starvation mode. DSC is trying to help. We have been bringing food to the distribution center, but I was told today that there are still 600 individuals who are awaiting a care package of food and cleaning supplies that haven't received one yet. The need is really great. They estimated that it would take four truck and trailer loads full of food, cleaning, and hygiene supplies to get a care package to everyone who has requested one. We have already taken 4 trucks, 2 trailers, and 3 cargo vans full of necessary goods, and yet the storehouses are empty. We must increase the amount of food we are bringing.

Please consider bringing food, cleaning, and hygiene supplies to DSC. We will be collecting these goods every Tuesday for the month of May from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM.

We are loading the goods directly on the trucks and sending them straight to the distribution center. I think many of us can think of a time when we were in desperate need, and at just the right time, the Lord provided for us. Now is our opportunity to be that extension of hope and love to many Navajo—some of whom may not know where their next meal is coming from. Thank you for helping us meet these urgent needs and for making our generous God’s kindness so evident among our Navajo neighbors. Please pray that the Lord would fill empty stomachs with food and empty souls with His Word.

As many of you know, the Navajo are being greatly affected by the COVID-19 crisis. The New York Times reported this past week that the Navajo make up 44% of New Mexico's coronavirus cases. As they only comprise 11% of our population, that difference is quite steep. Other sources are reporting their death rate from COVID-19 to be ten times higher than that of Arizona. The residents are under strict quarantine, which makes it even harder for them to get food and items that they need.

In response to this great crisis, DSC has partnered with the Navajo Christian Response Team through our missionaries, Chuck and Cindy Harper. The Navajo Christian Response Team has been recognized by the president of the Navajo Nation as the primary organization to establish food distribution centers throughout the reservation.

This past week DSC generously donated enough food to fill two trucks; a trailer; and a cargo van full of food, toiletries, and cleaning supplies. The families that received the food were very grateful. Some shared their thankfulness with tears in their eyes.

Here is a report from David Gregory, who drove one of the trucks:

On Tuesday, the “drop zone” in front of DSC was a flurry of activity as donated goods poured in. By the end of the day, most of the youth room floor was covered with donated goods needed to support the Navajo Nation during this crisis.

On Wednesday, all donated goods were loaded in trucks and delivered to the Navajo Reservation.

Last night some of our Navajo brothers and sisters called to convey their appreciation for the food and supplies delivered to them. They reported that several members of the church body carefully sorted and assembled boxes of essential goods for 31 families.

They want you to know how much these donated supplies bless them as an extension of God’s hand.

If you would like to offer help to the Navajo, please feel free to bring food or other essential items for them to the church on Tuesdays from now until the end of May from 9 AM - 11 AM. We will, of course, continue to collect food and essential items to distribute to Los Ranchos Elementary families who are in need.

Hi Desert Springs Church family,

Thank you for your prayers and for reaching out to us over the past week. We, like you, are experiencing the effects of COVID-19. We met together as a church on Sunday, five days ago, both in an English service and a service in the local language. Since that time, daily life has changed significantly. In the last week we have seen our country close its borders to all outgoing and incoming travel. Last night the country declared a state of emergency and declared that as of 6pm tonight, each household may only have one person designated to leave their house and we are in total lockdown. This person may only leave the house for necessary medical issues, or for purchasing food.

Additionally, last night the US government advised that US citizens should not travel abroad unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period. At midnight last night, the US consulate emailed our families and said they had arranged flights to repatriate US citizens. The flights would be scheduled to start this morning and end tomorrow, a window of 24 hours. As we awoke to the news this morning, we were all in agreement that we would stay in our city. We pray that this would be an unprecedented time to declare that we are first of all citizens of a heavenly kingdom and that we are on this earth, and in this country, to represent our Heavenly King. Please pray that this conversation would take place many times over the coming weeks.

We have loads of dried goods and water that we have been putting away for the past few weeks. At this point, we still have access to groceries as normal. The two single ladies that are in our city with us have each moved in with our two families.

We don’t know what our interactions with our neighbors will look like over the coming weeks. We stay in contact with most of our friends over social media. Both families are in contact with elderly neighbors and with neighbors who have no immediate family in town. We pray that we can be a light to them while still following the restrictions on social interactions placed on us by the government.

We continue to be in contact with the believers in our city, though we don’t foresee meeting with them at least for a couple of weeks. We have started a group online where we are sharing verses and encouragement.

Please pray for the protection of the vulnerable ones among us; some of our children have asthma. Please pray for waves of fear that sometimes pour over our children’s hearts and sometimes over our own hearts. Please pray for our family members in the states who are very worried about us.

Please pray for our interactions with others, that we would walk faithfully in the good works that God has prepared in advance for us to do. We desire for Jesus Christ to be magnified, not nice westerners.

Thank you for your prayers, your encouragement, and your financial support. We are honored to be Christ’s emissaries in this country.

– Your North African family

North Africa: Our Citizenship Is in Heaven

Sunday Recap, March 8, 2020

<figure class="
