Riviera Café Buffet at Heritage Hotel Manila

If you are looking for a hotel buffet in Metro Manila, Riviera Café in Heritage Hotel will not probably pop in your short list, in fact it won’t even come to your mind. This buffet has very little exposure when it comes to advertising and word of mouth. If you were asked “Where is the best buffet in Manila?” almost if not always, you would probably say “Spiral” or “Circles” or “Vikings” Who can blame you? These buffets are really popular. But of course, there are still other choices.

If you are in the area of Paranaque or Pasay City you can try visiting Heritage Hotel Manila’s Riviera Café. The Hotel is hard to miss, it is right at the Corner of EDSA and Roxas Boulevard. Their buffet is not the biggest in the metro and there’s still a lot of room for improvement. The food was good but a bit limited, We went for a Sunday Lunch Buffet – which is supposed to be the best and biggest in a hotel buffet –but still, the buffet was rather inadequate. To be fair, the service was ok, and the food that was served was good. My personal favorite was the Tacos Station, this was the just the second buffet that I have been through which has a taco station, the first was Vikings. Another favorite was the Korean Station where they cook Korean Dishes Such as Korean BBQ and Bulgogi.

Here are the rest of the food during that Sunday Lunch. BTW, they do not allow picture taking of the food and the buffet – hence the lack of exposure – I had to get permission from the staff, to the supervisor, to the chef, up to the Hotel Manager of the day to be able to take a FEW pictures. I asked why they do not allow clients to take photos, the Manager said that they got some negative feedbacks before and they are avoiding exposure… Oh Ok, I respect that.. but isn't it better if you prove the people wrong by offering a better buffet experience and showing it to the world? Anyway Moving On… :)

Now The Good:

Limited food but most of them are good.
The menu was complete: Soup, Salad, Breads, Appetizers, Seafood, Entrees, Desserts.
The place is conveniently located especially for Pasay and Paranaque residents

Some Rooms for Improvement that I think might help them become a more competitive buffet:

Better Ambiance, Some music can help. Throw in some renovations as well, the place lacks sophistication and elegance.
Better Service, some staff were not that friendly. Even the manager, when I approached him to ask for permission. “Sir, I am a paying customer, a bit of courtesy is appreciated”
Better Price Point. I bought our buffet at 50% (Group Buying Site) for P878.00 so that means that the Original price is around P1,756 which is a bit expensive considering that the buffet is not that extensive. You can get a much better buffet for that amount.
Improve your service and let the people know that you have improved. You have a lot of potential, you just have to get better, be open to criticisms and take it constructively for further improvement.

Riviera Café has a lot of potential. I hope next time everything will be much better. I am really looking forward to that. :)

I love the new Department of Tourism’s Campaign – It’s more fun in the Philippines.

It is very catchy and smart. Other countries can say that they have this and that but the bottom line is - It’s more fun in the Philippines! Who would not want to have some FUN?!

FIXED: Facebook 2.0 and Twitter 2.0 for Blackberry Errors

I recently upgraded my Facebook and Twitter applications for Blackberry to 2.0. After upgrading my applications, I noticed that the two applications were not connecting. I am getting these errors.

FACEBOOK APP ERROR:
"We cannot reach the Facebook server at this time. Please try again later. (100)"

TWITTER APP ERROR
"BWP Security Token Retrieval Failed"

I tried removing and reinstalling the applications but the same error occurred. I called the Globe Hotline if they are aware of the issue or if it has something to do with Globe’s BB Social subscription (Because the apps work fine if I am connected via WiFi) but the person I talked to was not aware of the problem. I even posted the issue on the Blackberry Forums Website but there was no help.

I brought my phone at Globe Business Center and they were not also aware of the issue. They Advised me to refresh (reformat) my Blackberry, which I did. But after reinstalling the apps, it still does not work. They even advised me to have my Blackberry Sent to Singapore for Repair! WHOA!

Few days after… I tried calling Globe’s Hotline Again. It was probably my lucky day! The tech support lady was aware of the issue! She said that my BB Social was activated as a Postpaid account instead of the BB Social for a Prepaid Account. She advised me that she will update my account in the system and I just need to reboot my BB after 1 hour. After 1 hour… Voila! Everything is back to normal! What a relief!!

The issue was a bit weird, why would I be able to register for a postpaid BB Social – and work – if my BB is a prepaid account. But nevertheless, the fix worked.

If you are experiencing the same errors on your FB and Twitter Blackberry Applications after upgrade and you are subscribed to Globe’s Blackberry Social Plan. I hope this helps fixing the issue.

1. Can I still go to the lifestyle event without registering in the microsite?

Yes, you may still participate in the One Hyundai Club Life in Style event. Just go to the registration area to enlist yourself and to receive your regular passport.

2. I was not able to register in the microsite; can I still join the raffle draw?

No, joining the Raffle draw is a privilege given to One Hyundai Club Members who have registered on the One Hyundai Club Life in Style microsite on or before January 10, 2012, attended the event and completed the passport stamps. All registration processes that happened after the mentioned date will not be considered as an entry.

3. How can I get a One Hyundai Club Life in Style 2012 Journal?

If you are part of the first 1,000 One Hyundai Club members who registered, attended the event, and completed the passport stamps, you are entitled to claim a limited edition One Hyundai Club Life in Style 2012 Journal for free.

4. How can I participate in the Hourly and Grand Raffle Draw?

Acacia Hotel’s Foie Gras Burger

I love burgers! It is one of my favorite comfort food. I have tried a lot of burgers out there, In fact a lot of them were really good. Some burgers even tried to be fancy by using Angus Beef or Wagyu Beef. But this… was probably the fanciest burger that I have ever tried. Acacia Hotel’s Foie Gras Burger.

I have tried Foie Gras before and I did not like it - pang mayaman kasi :) So when I was asked to try this I was skeptical because what if I did not like it? Sayang… But after few moments of explaining how good it was, I got convinced and gave in. And Oh Boy! It was really Good!

Forget the dressing! The burger was simple, buns, lettuce, patty, and caramelized onions on top served with freshly cut fries. The Patty was super Juicy!! like I said I don’t like Foie Gras as it is but when I took a bite into the patty the combined Juices of the Beef and the Foie Gras really crates a wonderful melts in your mouth flavor! I am not exaggerating here but it was really good! Though a bit expensive, but if you are looking for a different burger experience, you have got to try this one! It is worth every peso!

Oh wait… there’s the Foie Gras :)

So if you’re passing by Alabang and you are looking for something different. Go pass by Acacia Hotel and take a bite of this delicious burger!

FYI: I love this but I cannot discount the fact that I am anti Animal Cruelty. Foie Gras is already being banned in some countries because of the way it is made. Forced feeding ducks to have a fatty liver. That is just terrible!

YEY! Another Eat All You Can, Grill All You Can restaurant is in Town! Sambo Kojin! If you love Yakimix then you’ll surely love Sambo Kojin as well. The concept is basically the same – Choose, Grill, Enjoy! The set up, the menu, and the ambiance is almost identical. But what about the food? It was also very good! They have a wide variety of meats, seafood, and vegetables for grilling! The menu is mostly Japanese and Korean. I’m sure there’s something for everybody! Aside from the BBQ items, they also have tempura, different katsu, noodles, soup, desserts and a lot more! Drinks are not included though.

Their dessert station was a bit small. But the grill items was very extensive! My favorite items in the buffet was the chapchae, the tempura, the torikuwayaki and of course those super juicy and tender beef cuts! Yum!

I love these kinds of restaurants. First of all, its cheaper compared to a full hotel buffet, The BBQ items are great, and you get to enjoy dining more because you cook the food with your family and friends. There is never a dull moment. :)

Globe, Globe, Globe… Why Do you have to go this far?

If you are a subscriber of this blog, you are well aware of my bitter-sweet relationship with Globe. You probably remembered my previous post regarding Globe Telecom and how I think they value your Loyalty. There was quite a stir and it generated quite a number of hits highlighting the fact that there a lot of Globe Subscribers out there who share the same sentiments with me. In fact, that post even reached Globe’s HQ and after which, they provided immediate assistance. But we all know, we need more than that and the issue goes way beyond that.

Here are Some Snippets from my previous email conversation with a Globe Manager:

“Hi Dencio,

A member of my team saw your blog and reported the post to me. Just want you to know that we have escalated your concern to the SME team and they will coordinate with you one of these days.

First of all, thank you for taking action regarding the concern with my account. It was relatively fast, faster than the usual.

Second, I got a call this morning from one of the Loyalty Team's representative. THANKS TO YOU! They offered to waive my cash out for the 16GB iPhone 4 for the Business Plan 1,499. I declined the offer, I told her that I will just wait for the release of the iPhone 4s - hoping that the offer still stands by that time.

Third, Of course the main reason I wrote the blog is to air out my concern and frustration with Globe. BUT it does not end there. I am also hoping that what happened to me will not happen to other Globe Subscribers. I hope that you or the departments involved will take time to review the current system. Clearly, there is something wrong with the offering, paired with a lousy group of customer service people. Something really needs to be done. This is not good business practice. I hope this courtesy and fair offering will also be extended to millions of other loyal subscribers, some of which wishing that they could just transfer to Smart if only for their number which they have been using for the past 10 years!

Lastly, I appreciate your help on this issue. I hope that the offer will still be available when the iPhone 4S arrives. If not, I hope I can still ask for your assistance. This email may come as an unsolicited advice but I hope you guys pay attention. A good product is not enough, after sales customer services can really make or break your reputation. I will update my blog in a few days, some of my readers may be affected as well - they need to know.

iPhone 4s and the Competition

I thought (and hope) that when Smart gave Globe a run for their money by offering the iPhone 4s to their subscribers, they will be pushed to step up their game, provide better service, better pricing schemes, better customer service, and VALUE their loyal customers now more than ever. I was hoping they will say “#TODAYIWILL Value our existing clients by providing excellent customer service”. But I guess, that is off my Christmas Wish List. In fairness to Globe, the service is quite ok, they and launched a better pricing scheme for the iPhone 4s. But as for the other issues, I am not quite sure if there are improvements.

A Broken Record

I am writing again because as most of you know, there’s no point of debating with their outsourced customer service team. They can only give as much help and information as what Globe will provide them. No more, No less. If it is not in the handbook, they can’t make an exemption, bend the rules a bit, or decide on their own. In short – A waste of time! Its like talking to the wall! So, I just share this with the rest of the world and hope that this gets to the right people – again!

From Bad to Worst!

Monday, 12 December 2011: My Friend signed up her interest for the iPhone 4S via Globe’s registration page. She signed up for a Contract Renewal AKA Globe “Loyalty” Rewards Program.

Wednesday, 14 December 2011: She Got a confirmation email from Globe that She can pick-up the iPhone 4S at the Glorietta Business Center on Friday 16 December 2011 with Zero Cash Out! YEY!

Friday 16 December 2011: She went to Glorietta, as scheduled, to pick-up her iPhone 4S.

Now comes the Worst Part.

She arrived on time, excited. The whole Business Center was dedicated to those who will claim their iPhone 4S that day. She was greeted and assisted by the business center’s friendly and enthusiastic representatives. My Friend presented them the confirmation email and they checked their guest list for her name. It was not there! Instead, they just checked the system using the transaction number in the email. They were able to find it BUT, SURPRISE! It was not as straightforward as she would have expected. First, she has to upgrade her plan to 1,799 then Pay the cash-out price of P4,800 – WHICH, IN CASE YOU DID NOT NOTICE, IS THE SAME CASH OUT AS FOR ALL NEW SUBSCRIBERS! HELLO GLOBE, THIS IS FOR A LOYALTY RENEWAL REMEMBER? Also, this was not previously communicated to her in any way. It was a total surprise.

Moving On, she asked why she had to upgrade and pay when in fact their letter explicitly says, P0.00 Cash Out. The Globe representative told her that “Ma’am, May tumawag po ba sa inyo para sabihin na mag-uupgrade po kayo ng plan, dapat po kasi may tatawag.” Isn’t it obvious na wala? Few minutes of Argument and that was it, My friend gave Up! There was no point arguing since this person from the business center is not part of the loyalty team who evaluates and approves these kind of requests. Super Pissed, My Friend declined the offer and did not renew her contract. Way to go Globe! Another Pissed Subscriber added to the looooong List!

Is this some kind of a Joke? A System Glitch? An Honest Mistake? Or a bad case of miscommunication? I don’t know what exactly happened here but it was a very unacceptable business practice! If this email was a legally binding contract, we would have gone to court! (OA MODE!) :) I am not sure if this was an isolated case of sending the wrong Information gone wrong but I do hope that no other Subscriber experienced the same. It was frustrating, Annoying, and not to mention very Deceiving!

We called the Globe Hotline, and they did not have any explanation either! See? USELESS!

Dear Globe, Why Do you have to make it so hard for your subscribers? Really? Why?!

Why did you let this happen? Why mislead a client? Again, this is for a Loyalty Contract Renewal, why did you offer the same Cash Out as the new Subscribers? Why Oh Why?! I know life is unfair, but do you really have to be on the unfair side? C’mon, you can do better than this!

Get a Grip! Smart is literally at your doorstep waiting for “Switchers”. Aren't you bothered at all?

As for me I have not received any feedback yet from the “Loyalty” Department regarding my registration. But based on this, Optimism is totally out of the picture. Number 1 in postpaid? Nah! Make that Number 1 in having the most number of pissed postpaid subscribers!

Phone Number Portability Act, we need you now!

Garlic Parmesan Green Beans is steamed fresh green beans tossed in garlic butter sauce, and sprinkled with grated Parmesan cheese.

While Sour Cream and Chives Potatoes are baked marble potatoes coated in sour cream and chives butter mix.

This is my favorite among these 4 new side dishes. If I were to describe it, it was like eating a healthy version of my favorite Pringles Sour Cream and Potato Corner Sour Cream Fries! It was very flavorful! :) I hope they offer a bigger (Family Serving) of this side dish! It was that good, I probably ate around 1 kilo of potato that night! :)

Bound to be a cult favorite, Aglio Olio is perfectly cooked pasta with an olive oil based sauce, with garlic bits and chopped olives lending their distinct flavor.

This is Part 2 of My Acacia Hotel Review. Missed the first part? Read it HERE!

First of All, Sorry for the long wait. I was (still) in the process of migrating all my files to a new laptop. Please bear with my migration :)

Second, thank you for the positive feedback I got regarding my Acacia Hotel Post. A lot actually came from my friends here in the South! They were all excited to try the hotel but they were most excited in trying the Buffet… Actually I think some of them already did.

Now before the food, let’s talk about the Price. Acacia Hotel Manila’s Buffet Prices are as follows:

Breakfast: P788 net
Lunch: P888 net
Dinner: P988 net

(These prices are their November Promo,I suggest you call to confirm)

Like I said in my previous post, the food in Acaci Café’s Buffet was great. Considering that it was only their first week of operation, the food was really delicious. Paired with the Amazing Ambiance and 360 view of Alabang, it was a truly pleasurable dining experience. Acaci Café serves delicious local and International Cuisine. In fact, this is the first Hotel buffet that I have tried which serves Sisig! It was a complete buffet, appetizers, soup, salad, bread, main course dishes, pasta bar, carving station, Mongolian bar, and dessert bar. The only thing missing? Fondue and Ice Cream :) The buffet was good as it is but it was far from perfect. There are still a lot of room for improvement, which they acknowledged and promised to improve before their grand opening early next year. :)

Enough Talk, Here’s the menu of Acacia Hotel Manila (Alabang) Buffet. BTW, Can I just say, I love the natural light inside the restaurant, it makes great looking food photos.

This is cheddar cheese marinated in herbs and olive oil! A must try!!! Sarap! :)

One of my favorite entries on the buffet was these home made flavored butters. Plain, Pimiento, Herbed, and Black Olives infused butter! My favorite was the pimiento! it was very flavorful! I must try their breakfast buffet soon! I miss these butter!

The roast was soooo tender! It melts in your mouth! Although it was already cooked all the way through you can’t have it medium rare. :)

Korean Beeeeffff!!!! :)

Drinks are not included in the buffet. But I was surprised that their drinks were very affordable compared to other hotels where one order of coke in can will cost you P300++. My favorite drink? This unique and super refreshing Pandan Drink! It was soooo good! a must try! Too bad they do not offer bottomless for this drink. :)

I must say, this place is the perfect hangout this Christmas Season. A great place to dine, hang out and catch up with your friends and Family. I will surely visit Acacia Hotel this Christmas Season! See you there!

It has been long overdue! The South Needs a new Hotel. Thanks to Acacia Hotel Manila, The wait is finally over. Acacia Hotel Manila (Previously Introduced as Acacia Grove Hotel) is now Ready to Serve its clients with a distinct Filipino Touch.

The Hotel

Still fresh from their soft-opening last week, Acacia Hotel Manila is now ready for Business. Owned and managed by Corporate Holdings Management Inc. (CHMI), This five-star hotel is situated at the heart of the busy Alabang Business District, located right beside South Supermarket, Just a few minutes walk/drive from Alabang Town Center, Westgate, Festival Mall, Madrigal Business Park, and Northgate Cyberzone. If you are coming from Manila, the hotel is one turn away from the skyway exit. Truly, it is a great addition and a breath of fresh air to the seasoned hotels in the area – Bellevue Hotel, Vivere Suites, and Parque Espana.

From the Hotel Name, to the interior design, to the names of their function rooms, the Hotel proudly boast that they are truly a Filipino Hotel. In fact, Most if not all their Staff, Managers, and Chefs are Filipino. A team of seasoned hoteliers who collaborated to provide a world class service. Aside from the people, the Interior Design is mostly Filipino Heritage Inspired. Proudly Pinoy!

The hotel’s exterior is very contemporary and minimalist. The hotel entrance is made out of stainless steel frames covered with clear glass panels. Patterns are all over the place, from the walls to the ceiling and even the floors.

If the exterior showcases simplicity, Inside, it is a different story. Patterns and Prints are all over the place – in a good way! They really paid attention to details. The hotel’s lobby, function rooms, café are all all covered in beautiful patterns. A perfect mix of Art, Elegance, Sophistication which gives the hotel a distinct fresh homey feel to it.

The Hotel’s Reception Area is designed with Capiz Shells

Above is a reception table on the hotel lobby. The pattern behind is called Vertiscapes which symbolizes Acacia Hotel because it looks like the grain of the Tree when cut horizontally. You can see this pattern all over the hotel.

Below are some photos of their Beautiful High Back Lobby Chairs. Paired with a view of the surrounding greenery, it becomes the perfect place to lounge.

Above: The Banawe Rice Terraces Inspired Ceiling. I was informed that it looks better and more dramatic during the evening when the pattern lights are on.

Below: No Space is Wasted, they placed a minimalist water fountain under the marble staircase.

The Rooms

Since the hotel is still in their soft opening, not all guest rooms are operational. As of the moment, they only offer two kinds of rooms – the Deluxe and the Junior Suite. As for the rates, they offer the following introductory prices.

Deluxe Room Special Promo Rates:
P4,500++ for weekday
P4,000++ for weekend
Published rate for a deluxe room is at P9000++

Junior Suite Special Promo Rates:
P8,000++
Published rate for the Junior Suite is at P14,000++

The Acaci Café

By Far, Acacia Hotel Alabang has the best looking Buffet Restaurant in Manila! Really!

Almost similarly named after the hotel, Acaci Café is located at the mezzanine of the lobby. Just like the exterior, Acaci has high floor to ceiling windows with automatic blinds, beautifully printed tables and chairs, wall to wall printed carpets, and best of all, a refreshing panoramic view of the surrounding greenery! Take a look for yourself to see what I am talking about! Dining is really more pleasant with this kind of ambiance.

I will post a review of their buffet on a separate post. But just like the place, the food was great as well.

Like I said, Acacia Hotel Manila is still in its soft opening. Other facilities such as the Gym, Spa, and other restaurants will open before their grand opening early next year. The hotel has several ballrooms which will be open for events this November, just in time for the Holidays. If you want to make a reservation you may contact (632) 720 2000.

Sofitel Luxury Hotel, Spiral Buffet and Cash Cash Pinoy Vouchers: What Happens Next?

Since typhoon Pedring, majority - if not all of Sofitel’s operation have been suspended. Parts of Sofitel Luxury Hotel Manila, particularly Spiral Restaurant was badly affected by the recent typhoon. The hotel operation was suspended and Spiral was placed under renovation. If you are wondering what’s the status of the hotel and spiral, please read the following:

Sofitel Hotel Rooms and Facilities:

Starting today 10 October 2011, Sofitel Manila’s Guest Rooms and Suites have been re-opened. They are now accepting check-ins and new reservations. Other Outlets and Facilities such as the Le Spa, The Poolside, Fever Luxe Lounge, Philippe Tordjman Le Salon and The Zen Institute are expected to resume operation on 30 October 2011. The Pool and Club Millésime are also, fully operational.

Spiral Restaurant:

Sofitel took this chance to renovate and upgrade the look and feel of Spiral Restaurant. According to some sources, Spiral will re-open early next year, but Cash Cash Pinoy recently sent an email that Spiral will be re-opening its doors by June 2012. Either way, it’s a long time and Christmas is just around the corner. So where’s the buffet?

Sofitel will continue to serve “Special” Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Buffets at the Le Bar which is located at the lobby of the hotel. It is a smaller venue and Mostly Spiral Restaurant Specialty Dishes will be served. Lunch Buffet at the Le Bar Costs P1,474 net and Dinner Costs P1,781. Prices are a bit cheaper than Spiral due to the limited number of dishes that will be served. Le Bar will be serving buffets starting today.

Le Bar offers an intercontinental buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Such favorites as Pan-fried Foie Gras, US Prime Rib and chocolate fountains will be available. Breakfast comes with free flowing champagne on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, while on Sundays, Champagne Brunch features up to 7 brands of champagne and sparkling wines.

Aside from Le Bar, the Snaps Sports Bar and Sunset Bar will also be open to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Special a la carte menus have been prepared by Sofitel’s multi-awarded Executive Chef Marko Rankel of Spiral fame, and are available at Le Bar, Snaps Sports Bar and Sunset Bar.

Le Bar is relatively small compared to Spiral, It is best to reserve ahead of time.

Spiral Cash Cash Pinoy Vouchers:

This is a 4-day long celebration. The Best Suman EVERRR!

I mean Really, you have got to try this! :)

One of my officemate brought this Suman this morning.

I like the packaging, unlike other suman out there, this one was not oily! It was neatly packed in a clean banana leaf. I was expecting something regular, like a sticky rice suman ala Antipolo. But What’s inside was a surprise.

It was a Super Special Suman. Halayang Ube and Leche Flan Wrapped in a Sticky Rice Suman! This suman tastes sooo good! No need for additional sugar, coco jam, or chocolate. It was delicious on its own. Althought it may look sweet because of the halaya and leche flan, but its actually not. The flavors were very harmonious, just right!

I love eating Suman, I like Halayang ube, and I love leche flan. So the three of them combined together… WOW!

By the way, this is Aging’s Delight Suman. Tagged as “Ang Original Suman na Espesyal sa Bagong Ilog”. They are located in Pasig Blvd. Bagong Ilog Pasig City. The minimum order is 50 pcs. The suman is priced at P12 each. You also need to pre-order a day before then drop by the next day for pick-up. Aside from suman, they also sell Halayang Ube, Leche Flan, and other Kakanin.

My new favorite chocolate! Dark Ferrero!

Yes, there is a Dark Ferrero Chocolate!

First of all, this is a test post using the new official blogger app for the iphone. I am not sure how this blog post will appear on my site. Hopefully, the formatting and image size are acceptable.

I like my chocolate dark. The darker the better. My favorite? Royce' 90% dark chocolate. Soo good! Any % higer and it will become pure cocoa (i think).

I don't like nuts in my chocolate. In fact I don't like nuts in chocolates, cakes, and ice creams. I eat nuts, plain nuts, peanut butter, and M&M's peanuts!

That is why, I don't like the original ferrero chocolate.

But To my surprise, they created a variant that I really like! Ferrero Dark! Lools like a ferrero only dark and peanut free!

Soo good! All dark chocolate lovers and peanut in everything haters must try it! :)

I am sure you have heard about Vikings Buffet in Mall of Asia. Well if not, Vikings is the newest and hottest buffet in the metro today. If you think that a buffet must be situated in a hotel to be delicious and luxurious, Well, think again! For Just a fraction of the price you would normally pay for a hotel buffet, you get all these delicious food and bottomless soft drinks, juices, Iced Tea, coffee and even Beer!

Vikings Buffet in MOA is probably the largest (or longest) non-hotel buffet in the country. You may compare it to other eat all you can or buffets out there such as Dads/Saisaki/Kamayan or Tong Yang, or Yakimix but really, this place belongs to the big league.

Conveniently located in the quiet San Mig by the Bay (Behind MOA, near Hooters), this establishment is hard to miss. Vikings can accommodate around 600 people. There are several buffet stations inside the building: Japanese, Chinese, Drinks, Desserts, Grill, Carving, Salads, Appetizers, and a lot of international dishes. There is also ample parking space (P30) around the building.

Since Vikings is becoming really popular, reservation is required few days before you dine. Although they accept walk-ins but you will be accommodated if ever there are still available tables or if someone cancels his/her reservation.

Here are some highlights of my Dining Experience at Vikings:

The Tenderloin in the Carving Station was AWESOME! What's more, I read on their FB page that starting September 1, 2011 they will be adding CERTIFIED PREMIUM ANGUS BEEF to their menu every weekends and holidays!!! I must try that!!
Their Overflowing Drinks was a treat. I even made my own Rootbeer float by adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream in to my Rootbeer! :)
The Salmon Lasagna was Superb. It was was my first time to try this dish, it was so tasty and delicious. I am just not sure if this is a regular offering.
Nachos Station!!! FTW!
This is not a luxury buffet for nothing, they have caviar!! for those who wanted to try caviar, go to Vikings!
Bottomless Tempura!
Pasta Bar!

Ok final tips before the food:

Reserve at least a week in advance
Be there early to enjoy the presentation of the food
There are lots of kids, be careful
Often times the pasta bar, grilling station, and carving station has a long queue of people. Please be patient.
Don’t drink too much, focus on the food! :)

It is very Simple and FREE!

Just Log in to your Gmail Account
Look for the Send SMS Box
Type in the number in +63917xxxxxxx, +63918xxxxxxxx, or +63922xxxxxxx Format

And Voila! Free SMS Sent!

Each user has a 50 message/SMS limit for this service… I am not yet sure if this refreshes every day or every few hours :) Also, please be aware that sending SMS from Gmail is Free of charge but if you send a reply to these special phone numbers, I think you will be charged with the usual P2.50/SMS.

Awesome Swedish Meatballs at IKEA Singapore!

A great meal in a very unusual location! Who knew that inside this famous and huge furniture store, you can enjoy a very delicious and satisfying meal!

For those who are not familiar, IKEA is a privately held, international home products company that designs and sells ready-to-assemble furniture such as beds and desks, appliances and home accessories. The company is the world's largest furniture retailer. Many stores include restaurants serving traditional Swedish food, including potatoes with Swedish meatballs, cream sauce and lingonberry jam. - Wikipedia

I have learned that inside this IKEA Store in Singapore there is also IKEA Food & Restaurant. Which I heard - serve amazing Swedish meatballs!

Since IKEA’s Shopping area is HUGE, they also provided a big space for dining. But even though they have a large space for these hungry shoppers, most of the time, they are at full capacity. IKEA is a self-serve restaurant. You buy food in a grocery-type manner. You get a cart, place several layers of tray, pick up food items inside the restaurant, then fall in line and pay at the cashier. It was so enjoyable!

The condiments looks awesome! Imagine yourself milking a cow?! :p

I was really surprised how reasonable the prices were. Considering that these are Swedish food items served in Singapore.

Now the Food… Here is what we ordered that day..

IKEA’s Swedish Meatballs

15 meatballs served with mashed potatoes, cream sauce and lingonberries. It was really good! But to be honest, I don’t actually know how to eat this. Do I eat them all together or Do I reserve the berries for later after I finish the meatballs and potatoes? I did actually ate them all together.. It was delicious.

If you want to take home some of these meatballs, you can actually buy them in bulk. They sell it frozen in a bag wherein you can re-heat or cook it again later.

Chicken Wings: Nothing special, just wings. Juicy Perfectly Cooked Wings. No special sauce either. You can eat it with ketchup.. or as is.

For the Dessert, We got the Daim Cake. IT WAS HEAVENLY! This cake is actually made with Daim Chocolates which is quite similar with Maltesers. Not to heavy, not too sweet! I wish we have this cake here in Manila.

This is a free roll that we got... if you reach a certain amount during food shopping, they give you free stuff. I tried this once, then that was it. I think it was chocolate and wasabi… Imagine that! Good thing it was for free!

That’s it! If you happen to be in Singapore, You may want to Include IKEA in your itinerary. There are 2 IKEA branches in Singapore, One in Alexandra and One in Tampines. Aside from these great food Items, they actually have a lot of very useful and not so expensive household items. There are good quality towels. rags, curtains, tables and chairs, lamps, pillows and mattresses! The only trouble will be – excess baggage!

I hope IKEA opens a store here in the Philippines!

The Marina Bay Sands SkyPark and Infinity Pool

The Iconic Highlight of the Whole Integrated Resort Complex, The Marina Bay Sands Sky Park and Infinity Pool!

Facts: The Marina Bay Sands Has a total of 3 Towers, 55-stories, 2,561 Rooms and Suites with 18 different room types. Crowning these three towers is the world's longest elevated swimming pool. The MBS SkyPark is Longer than the Eiffel Tower and is Large Enough to Park Four and a Half A380 Jumbo Jets!

If you are a Hotel Guest of the Marina Bay Sands, you have free access to the SkyPark and Infinity Pool. You just have to show your hotel key-card to gain access. However, if you are a walk-in visitor, you have to pay and entrance fee of SGD 20. This will give you access to the SkyPark but not the Pool. The Infinity Pool is Exclusive to Guests only. The entrance to the SkyPark is located at Tower 3 of the Marina Bay Sands which is currently the nearest entrance from the Promenade MRT Station.

The SkyPark Offers Magnificent View of Singapore. You are literally looking down on the famous Singapore Skyscrapers.

The Infinity Pool was amazing! Amazing View and Amazing Height! But I have a couple of minor issues with the pool. First, it was too shallow! It was only 5-Feet Deep! Second, it closes at around 10-11PM? Why can’t we enjoy our night swimming longer? I hope they extend the operating hours of the pool. Otherwise, it was perfect!

Other activities aside from Swimming and Sightseeing, are dining in one of the several restaurants in the SkyPark. You may also have your picture taken in their photo booth. And if you are there in the evening, you may enjoy in one of the Bars.

This is where the Public Area Ends.. The Poolside in Tower 3 is covered with curtain for the privacy of the guests. You have to present your Key Card Beyond This Area.

Does Globe Really Value Your Loyalty?

I have been a Globe Handyphone Subscriber for almost 6 years now. In fact, I got my 70th billing statement this month. I love Globe’s services. Apart from some bumps along the way, I am still very satisfied with their service. That is probably why we also switched to a Globe Landline and Broadband at home. Anyway, we all know that Globe offers Loyalty Rewards everytime you renew your contract with them every 2 years. For the last two renewals, I availed of the bill rebates package. Bill rebate is when they offer to slash a certain amount on your monthly bill for the next 24 months instead of giving you a new handset. For example, instead of Globe giving you a new Nokia C3 to renew your contract and lock you in for another 2 years, they will offer you P400 bill rebate for the next 24 months. So if you are in their plan P999, you only need to pay P599 a month but still enjoying your plan’s full features and benefits.

I was very happy and satisfied with Globe’s Loyalty Plans, until recently.

I have only 3 months remaining in my contract, which means I will be renewing my contract again with Globe soon. Currently, I am under G-Flex Plan 800 (their old consumable plan) and my account is under their SME/Business Plan - since I got this phone through my previous employer. Given that I am preparing to renew my plan with Globe, I called their loyalty customer service hotline few weeks back to check on their loyalty offers. I was informed that if I renew my plan and change to their current SME Plan 999, they will give me a new Nokia C3 phone; however, I told them that I was not interested. What about bill rebates? He said that it is not currently being offered. So I asked, what about an iPhone 4?

Now it gets a bit complicated and deceitful (That is how I felt).

I was informed that if I want to avail of the 16GB iPhone 4 under the new upgraded SME plan 999, I will have to pay for an additional 21K. I asked, what if I upgrade to the plan P1499 instead? He said that the cash-out will be around 7-8K. Aside from that, he informed me that if ever I will avail of the offer, I will have to wait for a few months (back then) since the stocks are limited and there is a limited supply for the loyalty plans. I said Ok... In Doubt, I asked if that offer/price is indeed for the Loyalty Plans, he said yes. Ok, fair enough I told him. I will just call you back; I just need time to think.

Still doubtful after a few days, I got curious on how much the phone will will cost if I will just subscribe to a new plan instead of the loyalty plan. I called globe again (not mentioning my name and number yet) and asked how much is the cash out for the 16GB iPhone 4 under SME plan 999 and 1499. To my surprise, they gave the same amount as previously given to me for the Loyalty.

I was so dumbfounded and irritated at the same time.

I asked (calmly), why the offer/cash-out is the same for both loyalty and new applications? He answered, on a slightly confused tone of voice, “sir, yun po kasi yung offer talaga namin ngayon” “discounted na po yun”. I asked, “what about the loyalty rewards, asan na yun? If pareho lang ang offer nyo sa new and current subscribers? Saan na-factor ang loyalty doon?” He replied “sir yun po talaga ang offer ni globe sa iphone, fixed po talaga sya”. I added “Tapos I have to wait pa for the stock availability, samantalang yung mga new subscribers mag walk in lang sa business center may stocks sila!” “ano ba naman klaseng loyalty offer yan”. Then I hung-up still very upset and frustrated.

To cut the long story short. For new subscriptions of iPhone 4, most of the time, Globe business centers have available stocks for new account applications. No need to wait! You just fill-out a form, pay, and you’re done.

Now for the “Loyalty” Accounts, you have to inform them that you will be re-contracting with Globe, then, they will tell you that you will have to wait for a few weeks or even months because they have limited stocks under loyalty, then you will pay the SAME cash-out amount as the NEW subscribers.

I am writing based on my personal experience. I and I am not sure whether this happen to other subscribers (I hope not!). I just think that a Loyalty Plans must be rewarding and hassle free considering that technically, they are trying to win you back, Right? Or they don’t really care?

I Currently subscribe to a number of Globe Services: Globe Postpaid account, Globe Load Tipid Account, Globe Landline, and Globe Broadband. Now, I ask again, does Globe REALLY Value Your Loyalty to them and their service? As far as I am concerned - NOT! Is this really how Globe “Value” their existing subscribers? I sure hope not!

Well,This really sucks! But Do I have a choice at the moment? Unfortunately, None! If only I have the option to move to another carrier and retain my current number, I already did! But it looks like I will be looking forward to another 2 years of bittersweet relationship with Globe… We’ll see…

Buffet Breakfast at the Marina Bay Sands (Part 3)

I’m back for Part 3 of my Marina Bay Sands Review Series. If you missed part 1 and 2, you may read them HERE and HERE.

A rainy Morning at Singapore… After our pleasant sleep at the Atrium Room, It’s time for breakfast!

Like I mentioned on my previous post, breakfast is not included in the room reservation. So If you want to try their breakfast buffet, you need to go to Rise Restaurant at the lobby of Tower 1. The buffet price is $38++ SGD per person. To be honest, the price was surprisingly reasonable. Converted to peso it will only cost you around Php 1,600, which is the typical buffet price here in Manila.

I am not sure if you can reserve a table for the buffet. Judging from the long line of people waiting to be seated, I don’t think you can (I did not really tried calling for a reservation). I think they are on a first come first serve basis.

As expected the buffet was big. Mostly international dishes but there are also a lot of local and regional dishes being served. Salads, Breads, Sausages, Bacon, Omelets,Fruits, Jams, And A whole lot more! Name it, they have it!

Fried Dumplings, Siopao, Cheese, Curry Puff, Ham, Bacons, Sausages!

Pancake with Nutella, Bite Sized Hash Browns, Corned Beef and Ham and Cheese Omelet.

My favorite breakfast item that day was the hot chocolate, I was informed that it was made from Cadbury chocolates. And true enough, it tasted like one. I want to try this one again! :)

Now, guess where these stuff ended up? (and oh, in case you are wondering, I left the pepper mill on the table! hahaha!)

Aside from the great food, One thing that I love about this breakfast experience was the presence our super friendly and hospitable Filipino service men and women. They will really make you feel at home. I have visited other countries in the past and one thing I learned was how good Filipinos were when it comes to providing excellent customer service. I am not saying these because I am a Filipino, but if truth be told, Filipino’s particularly those working in service industry are really excellent – they are pleasant, warm, hospitable, and hardworking individuals. Now I know why international hotels like the Marina Bay Sands hire lots of Filipinos as their service staff.
