Cilic dumps del Potro

from APF/Reuters
US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro was dumped out of the Australian Open after losing a titanic five-setter to Croatian 14th seed Marin Cilic in the fourth round on Sunday. The Argentine fourth seed battled for four hours 38 minutes before going down 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 on Hisense Arena.Cilic will play in his first Australian quarter-final on Tuesday against either American seventh seed Andy Roddick or former finalist Fernando Gonzalez of Chile. It was sweet revenge for Cilic, who lost to Del Potro at the same stage in last year's Australian Open and in the quarter-finals at the 2009 US Open. The victory stretched Cilic's winning streak to 9-0 this season after successfully defending his title at Chennai on the way to Australia. Del Potro was bidding to match his best result at the Australian Open when he reached the quarter-finals last year before going down in straight sets to Roger Federer.Cilic broke Del Potro's service four times in the marathon match, in the 10th game of the second set, the 10th and 12th games in the third set and in the fourth game of the final set. The Croat hit 67 winners and made 71 unforced errors as the match ebbed and flow and edged out Del Potro with 20 aces to 19.It ended a draining tournament for the Argentine, who broke through for his maiden grand slam title after beating Federer at last year's US Open. He spent almost 15 hours on court and played a total of 18 sets in his four matches at the year's opening grand slam.It was his second five-set match at the tournament following his four hour, 17 minute battle with James Blake in the second round on Wednesday. Del Potro, who entered the tournament with a wrist problem, seemed to be troubled with fatigue and other injuries throughout the match and received substantial treatment on his left foot.

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Juan Martin Del Potro booked his place in the fourth round of the Australian Open with a 6-3 0-6 6-4 7-5 win over Germany's Florian Mayer Friday. The towering Argentina suffered a lapse in concentration in the second set but regained his composure to finish off his opponent in two and a half hours and avoid a repeat of his epic five-set match with James Blake in the second round.
Del Potro showed no obvious signs of fatigue from that match and seemed untroubled by his injured wrist in an ominous sign for his rivals heading into the second week of the championship. The U.S. Open champion and world number five plays either Marin Cilic or Stanislas Wawrinka Sunday for a place in the quarter-finals.

Del Potro survives marathon battle against Blake

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - U.S. Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro recovered from a set down to advance to the third round of the Australian Open after surviving a marathon battle against American James Blake Wednesday.
The fourth-seeded Del Potro had been in danger of becoming the highest-ranked men's player to be eliminated before he rallied from a break down in the fifth set to take the match 6-4 6-7 5-7 6-3 10-8 in four hours, 17 minutes. The 30-year-old American, who twice had treatment on his right knee that had to be strapped during the match, had held a 2-0 advantage in the final set though the tall Argentine managed to fight back to put the match back on serve.Del Potro had the opportunity to serve for the match in the 12th game only to be denied by Blake before he finally took the advantage again in the 17th and sealed it with a massive serve that Blake was unable to return on the next game.

Delpo through to second round in Australia

A little rusty Juan Martin Del Potro overcame the first hurdle in his chase to a second Grand Slam crown in Melbourne as he defeated Michael Russel in the first round of the Australian Open. Delpo missed a lot, but showed no sign of suffering from the right wrist injury that forced him out of the Kooyong exhibition last week. The serve, instead, was on fire, as he hit 21 aces.
It didn't look so at the very beginning of the match, when the Argentine lost his first round of serve and went down a break, but he soon recovered winning four games in a row. He had a set point on 5-3, and then managed to end the set 6-4. An only break decided the second set, when the number 4 seed moved up a gear in the fifth game and went on to win 6-4 again.
In the third, on the score of 3-2 for the American, a controversial call that the chair umpire didn't allow Del Potro to challenge made the Argentine nervous. He committed two double faults and lost his serve for the second time in the set. He kept on arguing with the chair umpire for the remaining part of the third set that ended 6-3 for Russell.
But, finally, in the fourth set the Argentine managed to calm down, started with a break to lead 3-0 and finally closed 6-2.
Now he waits for the winner of the match between American James Blake and French Arnaud Clement.

New best ranking for Juan Martin: n. 4, but just for a week...

from Momento24.com (http://momento24.com/)
The Argentine Tennis player Juan Martin Del Potro, without participating in any tournament these last weeks, peaked at number 4 of the ATP world rankings.
“The tower of Tandil’ enjoys the best place that he had ever achieved in his career, because the Scottish player Andy Murray has been relegated to fifth place because he didn’t play the Doha ATP and due to that he lost the 250 points he had gained the last year, when he won the title. Del Potro is above him with just 5 points more.
Although the position will last only one week Del Potro will be among the four top-seeded for the Australia Open, which will start this Sunday. Del Potro will avoid playing in semi-finals against the three best in the world: Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

from The Sports Network (http://www.sportsnetwork.com/)London, England (Sports Network) - Nikolay Davydenko captured the ATP World Finals title on Sunday by knocking off Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets.Davydenko earned the 6-3, 6-4 decision over the reigning U.S. Open champ for his 19th career title and fifth this year. The Russian went unbeaten in finals this year with previous wins at Hamburg, Umag, Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai."I think it's amazing," Davydenko said of his victory. "[In the] history of the [Finals], for my name to be there is something amazing for me."Del Potro, who knocked off Robin Soderling in the semifinals, was vying for his eighth career crown and fourth in 2009, but the Argentine lost all three break chances in the final to fall just short."He plays like PlayStation. He runs down everything," del Potro said of Davydenko. "It is very difficult to hit winners. But I think he is a great champion."Davydenko lost to Novak Djokovic in the finals of this event last year but advanced to the semis via a set-tiebreaker over the Serbian in Group B round- robin play. Davydenko then ended a 12-match losing to world No. 1 Roger Federer in a three-set semifinal battle. On Sunday, he won an early break and held serve to take a relatively quick first set. With the score tied, 4-4, in the second, del Potro lost his serve at love and Davydenko served out the match. In the doubles final, Bob and Mike Bryan upended Max Mirnyi and Andy Ram, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, capturing their third title in the event and reclaiming the year- end No. 1 doubles ranking."To come full circle, do it in the last tournament, with so much riding on this one match, it's huge," Mike Bryan said. "We're going to be talking about this match for the rest of our lives. There's nothing sweeter than this."(6) N. Davydenko bt (5) J.M. Del Potro 6-3 6-4

Juan Martin Del Potro will play the final of the ATP World Tour Finals tomorrow against Russian Nikolay Davydenko, after the Argentine came out on top of Robin Soderling in a three set thriller. It's the first final for Juan Martin since the victory at the US Open against Roger Federer. The match was highly dominated by serves, but offered also a lot of wonderful baseline shots from both sides.Delpo had the early chances to break as the Swede went 0-40 down on his serve in the third game, but Soderling played his best tennis on all the break points and got off of the bad situation. Another break point for the Argentine in the fifth game was cancelled by one of the Swede's 18 aces of the match. The first set went to a tie-break and here Delpo played badly: a double fault and a forehand sent out by the net and he was down 5-1, before losing it 7 points to 1.In the second set Juan Martin exploited his only break chance on the score of 4-3 and ended the set 6-3. His level was so high that he only made two unforced errors in the entire set.So it was the third set to decide the entire story. After two sets with no break chances, Soderling took his opponent's serve on the score of 3-2 and it looked like the Swede would be able to take control of the match until the end. But Del Potro's fierceful reaction came out once again, as he broke back and saved himself from a 0-30 situation in the following game to level the match on 4-4.The winner would come out of a third set tie-break, in which Juan Martin took the early lead after a fantastic 24 shot rally he ended with a backhand down the line. He never looked back again, took a 4-0 advantage, lost one of the two mini-breaks, but, in the end, managed to close 7 points to 3 with an ace.Let's hope Juan Martin will recover from tonight's effort for the final that he will play tomorrow against Davidenko who, in the first semifinal, had defeated world number one Roger Federer. Due to the organization of the two sessions, the Argentine will have seven hours of rest less than his opponent.(5) J.M. Del Potro bt. (8) R. Soderling 6-7(1) 6-3 7-6(3)

Del Potro through after fantastic victory over Federer

A super performance by Juan Martin Del Potro gave him the second successive win on Roger Federer after the victory in the US Open final and, most of all, granted him access to the last four of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. The Argentine played a superb match in which he never lost his serve and hit 11 aces. This result qualifies Juan Martin as second in his Round Robin group behind Federer, sending Andy Murray back home. The first set was a masterpiece by the US Open champion. After breaking Federer in the first game, he took a 5-1 advantage letting his shots go in full flow. Two wonderful lobs on the score of 4-1 are something to remember. Juan Martin ended the set 6-2, but, as the match went on, the world number one started to find his rythm. The Swiss saved a break point with the help of the net in the first game of the second set, but, from then on, he managed to hold his service games easily. The set went to a tie-break, where it was again the Argentine who started on top, taking an advantage of 4-2 and then 5-4 with two serves to end the match. On the first point Juan Martin placed a strong first serve, but then missed an easy forehand near the net. Another mini-break by Federer gave the Swiss a set point he converted with a forehand volley. At the start of the third set, only few would still pick Del Potro as the favourite, but the Argentine didn't lose his composure. On the score of 3-3 he saved the first three break points of his match (one of these with a second serve on the line) and then conquered the decisive break in the following game, also thanks to a double fault and a missed forehand by Roger. One game later, the Argentine ended the match with another solid service game closed with an ace. In the counting of the games won and lost, Delpo resulted ahead of Murray just for a game. So the Scot, who had won his second match earlier against Verdasco, is eliminated.Juan Martin will meet the winner of the group B in the semifinals on Saturday. (5) J.M. Del Potro bt. (1) R.
Delpo wins and sets a decider against Federer

It's one win and one defeat. Juan Martin Del Potro improved his round robin score with a fought victory against Fernando Verdasco in his second match of the ATP World Tour Finals. Not a wonderful performance by Juan Martin who nevertheless improved with his serve, showing that the abdominal injury is overcome. Now Delpo's chances of progressing to the semifinals hang on the last match that the ARgentine will have to play on Thursday against the Swiss Roger Federer. The first set was decided by an only break, that came in the third game when the Spanish missed three forehands. Delpo held tight till the 10th game, when he had to save two break points with his first two aces and closed the set 6-4. The Spanish, semifinalist at the Australian Open earlier this year, increased the precision of his shots and started to make Delpo move from left to right on the baseline. In the eight game of the second set he broke Juan Martin's serve for the first time and ended the set by winning the last seven points. The US Open champion, though, managed to contain the wave of enthusiasm from the Spanish. On the score of 3-2, Delpo was the first to break and went up 5-2, an advantage that seemed to virtually put the word end on the match. The world number 5 reached match point on Verdasco's serve, but the Spanish passed him with his backhand. On the following game Fernando recovered the break. In the 10th game, with a couple of outstanding defense, a backhand lob and a running forehand, Juan Martin recovered from 0-40 on Verdasco's serve and had another match point, but here the Spanish attacked well and forced his opponent to a backhand in the net.The match was decided by the tie-break, just like their only previous meeting, in 2006, in the challenger of Segovia. In that occasion, it was Del Potro who had prevailed 10 points to eight. This time the last game was far less fought, as Delpo closed 7 points to 1, even if a line judge called a foot fault on an ace by the Argentine and the chair umpire had to over-rule on a missed forehand by the Spanish.(5) J.M. Del Potro bt. (7) F. Verdasco 6-4 3-6 7-6(1)

Juan Martin loses his first match to Andy Murray

Juan Martin Del Potro started his ATP World Tour Finals campaign with a three set loss to local favourite Andy Murray. Delpo went down physically in the end in a match he could have won, hadn't he started playing his tennis a little bit late.In fact, after having a break point in Murray's very first serve, the US Open champion lost the opening five games of the match. On the score of 3-0 for Murray, Delpo called for the physio, but it wasn't the abdominal problem of Bercy that bothered him, but a little nose bleeding. From then on, though, Juan Martin started to put the pieces of his tennis together. He saved 5 set points, and managed to recover a break before dropping the first set 6-3.In the second, he took over his opponent raising the number of winners, particularly with his backhand. He broke to go 3-0, then dropped his serve, but another break sent him 5-2 and the set ended with an astonishing crosscourt winning forehand by the Argentine.Just when it seemed the match could re-open with a very levelled third set, Andy Murray started to take control. He became more aggressive and gained a lot more free points on his serve. After a break in the second game, the world number five was never re-admitted into the match and the Brit closed 6-2 with a crosscourt backhand.(4) A. Murray bt. (5) J.M.
