My Dear Old Dad. I'm fortunate to have one and be one. To me it means that I am the one to be counted on. You know, I Got Your Back.
The goats and chickens are doing fine. I just knew you were going to ask.
Smiles.
There were 11 deer hanging out on the property today. One big buck and many does. Don't see any of the fawns yet. One more week, then they will be running all over this place. Soon after that we will be seeing the fawns frolicking around the fields. Whenever a bunch of fawns get together, they play like baby goats do. Well, almost like.

Hey, we're growing sweet potatoes. Not sure if they will grow in this cool climate, but we are trying anyway. Someone please send us a few good recipes for sweet potatoes. Maybe a good canning or freezing recipe too.

Enjoy your Father's Day, it's a double whammy for us, Steven is turning older this Sunday also. So Happy Birthday Honey...

DeerLake Weekly Letter, Visions of the Past and the Whatchamacallit

Sure is nice to have our granddaughter here for a visit. They grow up so fast. 12 years old and she has a great life to look forward to. Athletic and good grades, seems to have her head on straight. We started her in a horse club today, rodeos and O'Mok'See games (barrel racing and team penning) all summer long, just for fun.

The corn is up, one inch tall already. The entire garden is looking good this year. About the worst thing that can happen to it now is hail. Many a year I've seen 10 minutes of hail wreck the whole garden. We have flowers on the zucchini already; started them indoors. And best of all, the strawberry patch is awesome.

DeerLake Weekly Letter, Summertime in the Country and Dividing the Pecans

Our garden is planted; it's early for here, but the weather looks good for the next ten days. We have always loved to grow things and have plenty of critters around. Much fulfillment arrives from having a small farm. This is the first year I have called our place a farm. After all these years, we have finally cleared enough trees to grow things. Guess it's an incentive to stay healthy and stay around to enjoy it.

Still trying to figure out the asparagus; this is their second year, I think we're suppose to harvest all that comes up for the first 6 weeks or so. Or maybe we suppose to leave the smaller shoots that come up. (Let me know?)

Summertime has arrived! There now will be happy, warm days to enjoy in spite of chores having to be done. Yes chores, but as I learned as a child on the farm,
life is not all work, and no play!

Busy in the Garden, Steven and Becca

DeerLake Weekly Letter, Memorial Day and What was God Thinking

I took a little trip down to south central Montana to wander through the Lewis and Clark Caverns. It was quite an adventurous two days. We got to the caverns just in time for the last tour of the day. We started our hike at just a little above a mile high in elevation, and when we were at the lowest part of the cavern, we were just a bit more than a mile lower than sea level. I had never been in a cavern like this before, the rock formations were astounding. Our guide was an older gentleman and full of interesting fun facts.

The next day we started out to see Virginia City, Nevada City ( a couple of Ghost towns, full a history) and Phillipsburg MT. With most of the town sectioned off for viewing only, both ghost towns had several shops open and still operating for tourists. Of course it would be the old time bakery and old sweet shops that were hard to pass up. And just down the block was the old fashioned ice cream shop. About dinner time clouds rolled in and the rains came down; letting us know that it was time to turn the car in the direction of home again.

I thought I'd die an old man back in my hometown
They gave me this plot of land, me and some other men, for a job well done.

Hey, these goats are all about fun. They don't walk straight, or run straight, sideways and fast is so much more fun. They seem to want to follow Becca everywhere. It's pretty cute watching them play, they can not pass anything without try to climb on it. It's a good thing they don't weigh very much, because if you sit down they will be on top of you.

Mocha has found her purpose in life; herding is what she was bred for and she comes by it naturally.

Who knew that seed potatoes would be hard to get. Our local seed supplier was all out of the Yukon Gold seed potatoes. Next we tried Gurney and Burpee, along with our organic garden supplier, and they were all out-of or don't ship to Montana. Learning, next year we will get them earlier. Guess we'll try the Purple Viking potatoes this year. Trying to eat organic and healthier food is expensive, so our garden just gets larger every year. We had to buy another freezer to fit it all in.

We have added three new members to our family. Nubian goats, one girl and two wethers. The largest one has the biggest ears, Wow! They are a little over a month old and boy can they run and jump around. Something to see when they jump sideways or jump and flip around. Our grand daughters are coming for a long summer visit. Boy, will they have fun bottle feeding goats.

We had a nicely fenced acre with nothing in it. Now we have some critters to keep the grass down. I know what your thinking; well, lets see them. I'm sure soon we will make a fun video with goats. They have only been here one day and the smallest wether doesn't want to eat yet. Sure hope we can get him to eat something tonight.

Chop, chop, chop, I always try to get my firewood cut before June. Want to be sure it has at least all summer to dry. Such a pain to do all that firewood, but sure is nice, not to have to worry about having a warm house during those long cold winter months.

Planning our next trip, down through the Lewis and Clark Caverns. Should be an adventure! Making a few stops along the way to test the mineral hot springs and visit a couple of ghost towns. Looking forward to exploring some new territory.

Waterfalls are like the perfect feel good spots. You can get lost in thought while watching and listening to the rushing water. Along our journeys, we are always in search of waterfalls. Here in Montana, some waterfalls are un-improved. I mean, they are totally natural, logs, brush and not much of a trail to follow. I suppose it is like that all over the place. I look at them and think, what a shame they are not more accessible to the public. If I had the use of a helicopter for one day, I could clean up this mess. But then on the other hand, if they well maintained trails, we would probably have to pay to hike-in and enjoy them.

April showers really do bring May flowers. Our first wild flowers are looking great as usual. The daffodils are in full bloom, I know we are behind a lot of the country, for spring flowers, but they are a welcome site when they finally start blooming. I have always tried to make it to the tulip fields in Mount Vernon, Washington every year. What a wonderful site, color everywhere, fields and fields of color. What is blooming in your part of the country?

Figuring out that we love strawberries and blueberries in our morning smoothies, so we planted a lot more. Now we need a larger freezer. Also got one of those newfangled FoodSavers that sucks the air out when sealing. Works pretty cool. I'm thinking we could probably grow two years worth of potatoes this year. Freeze up the first years potatoes in regular freezer bags and FoodSaver the rest. Last year, we sliced half of the potatoes and mashed the other half, then froze them all. It worked pretty good, wasn't sure how it would work with having mashed potatoes. But, you just drop the frozen mashed potato into a pan with some milk and simmer until they are completely mixed together. The FoodSaver says that freezer food will last twice as long. Who knew!

Time to start planning for summer; we have our two granddaughters coming to spend a few weeks with us. Usually we have the whole family come. This year it is just the girls (ages 12 and 14). We plan to enjoy every minute. They are at the age, where I am sure that I will have my hands full. Looking forward to it.

Love this time of year, everything is blooming and it's time to plant some of the garden. Planting some of the plants indoors under lights, hoping to get an early start this year. Becca hung-up some of her pottery bird houses; it will be interesting to see if the birds will like them or not. It was one of her projects this winter; making up several styles of bird houses.

    When visiting Glacier National Park, we suggest taking the hike to Redrock Falls. Enter at the Many Glacier entrance and travel the short distance to the end of the road. It is mostly level hiking, along a good trail to the falls. We came into this lake by way of the Swiftcurrent pass. Yes that was the long way around. We traveled in on the Highline trail, stayed a night at the Granite Park Chalet and finished our hike-out the next day. Up and over the pass and down into the Many Glacier valley we went.

   This is Grizzly country! You most likely will not see any Grizzly bears, but they are all around you. Take precautions, like, making noise while you hike. This is the perfect time to sing as you travel along your merry way. Becca and I have hiked all over this park and have never had any bear problems.

  A true story told by the Park Rangers.
Along the highline trail there was a group of 20 hikers being led by a Park Ranger. This part of the trail is cut into a steep rock face. It is straight up and straight down. As the group approached this part of the hike, a Grizzly Bear decided to use the trail also. The bear was coming right at them. Well having no where to go, the Ranger yelled out "Hug The Wall". And everyone did. They say that the bear just went right on by them. Many people actually felt the bear brush by them. Some did the Bump with that bear. One old fella had a heart problem and had to be carried back out. Now if being on that mountain face wasn't scary enough, these vacationers had to do it with a Grizzly bear.

I like to say that "everything is fixable". Take health care for instance, our country pays out more for healthcare than any other country; and yet it is a struggle for everyone. Check out what this doctor has to say in this very informative video. He has some great ideas on how to make things better and cheaper, at the same time. I think I like this guy!!!

The other day a friend was showing me how he makes arrow-heads. If you have the right kind of rocks, you can smack them together and make knives and arrow-heads. Other tools they use for this are antlers and metal hammers. Takes a special knack to hit the rocks at just the right angle. My buddy made a real arrow with one of his best arrow-heads attached, framed it up and hung it on his wall. Of course he made the shadow-box frame also. A pretty crafty Fella; hope some of that skill rubs off.

Deerlake Weekly Letter, Happy Easter Everyone

Sweet Memories of Easter, as a girl growing up in Washington State. My mom always wanted to dress me in those cute little Easter dresses with the little bonnets that went with them. We also had cute little Easter purses and sandals. Well not many Easters were warm enough for that, so for sunrise service I had to cover-up with my winter coat. I find myself still getting excited as Easter comes and goes. I didn't get a cute little dress and bonnet this year, but I did make a cute Easter Egg Cake.

The snow hopefully is gone by-now or will be soon and the birds are all singing. Steven and I put out the porch swing the other day. Still gets a bit chilly out there, so we grab a warm wrap when we go out for a swing. Out here in the country, the evenings can be pretty quiet; we swing and listen while the birds put on their cheerful concert. At times the birds get so loud, you might think we live in the jungle. Oh those special swing times!

Wish I could say that I made the, Easter Puppies video. Hats off to the kids that made this video. Takes some serious effort to get good video of baby animals doing anything fun. Enjoy the video below, and have a wonderful Easter.

Deerlake Weekly Letter, Morning Like This and Easter Lily

Near the southern entrance to Glacier Park, is where you can find McDonald Lake. It was a cloudy day and the air was still, the clouds were in several layers. Every day at McDonald Lake has plenty of opportunities for getting great photos and videos (even on a cloudy day).
Easter is upon us and it's time to enjoy the renewed life all around us. In many parts of the country the trees are budding out, and daffodils are popping up. The birds are beginning to show up after their long flights from the south.

What do you think of when you think of Easter? Eggs, of course. The symbol of new life come spring. How better to illustrate the season's spiritual message?

I was out checking the chicken coop before leaving this morning. The birds strutted and clucked around the hen houses: three of them were in their nesting boxes. As I got closer they began puffing their feathers to twice the normal size, guarding the eggs, waiting for new life to appear. I was amazed at the protective instincts they have. (A mother protecting her young). It reminded me of Jesus' words in the Gospel of Matthew: "How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings".

My girlfriend and I had a nice day-out last weekend, looking for windmills. Travelling the back roads of Montana, we enjoyed views of the Mission Mountains and the Clark Fork river. The plan was to stop by the National Bison Range in Moiese Montana. It was a little early in the year for that though; the gates to the upper portion of the range do not open until May 12th. (Mother's Day weekend). I suppose that most of the bison are getting ready to calf now, so they keep them closed off to the public. It was a great day anyway. Always good to be out and about, taking pictures with friends. We found old beat up windmills and some barns long forgotten. The skies were blue and the temperatures had that perfect springtime feel to them. We will be off to Glacier Park early tomorrow morning on another photo shoot. They have lifted a few of the barricades on the roads and we are now allowed to drive up a bit farther on the Going To The Sun Road. Maybe we will catch-site of a few baby animals in the park tomorrow.

St. Patrick's Day is Sunday and it's time to share a little green joy. What will you be cooking up for the day? I'm making a nice Beef Stout Stew with a delicious Luck of the Irish Smoothie. Enjoy this weeks pages below.

One of the perks of living in the great state of Montana, is the chance encounter with the native wildlife. Wednesday, as Steven was out doing the evening chores, a herd of elk came by for a visit. It was hard to count them all through the trees, I'm guessing around 15, with two bull elk in the bunch. Elk are a pretty large animals, not that you can tell by just watching them passing by; but as they stand next to our 5 foot fence you can see clearly the size of the majestic animals. That elk put her head right over the fence.
They took their time passing through as they sampled from every bush and tree within their reach. As they made it to the far end of the property, the neighbors dogs turned them around and back they came. We had enough time to shoot quite a bit a video, hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

The first of March and this month is looking to be packed with spring excitement. Next week, those of us living in Daylight Savings zone will be turning our clocks ahead for a bit more of that daylight. The week after that we will all be celebrating with the Irish. My mother was Irish, so it was always one of our favorite holidays. Nothing to serious, just some good old fashioned fun! Then at the end of the month we celebrate Easter and the life that has been given us by Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins. Easter is the time of renewed life; spring time brings forth the blossoming trees and the birth of many animals. Us northern folks are sure anticipating the coming of spring!

It's still the Love Month, just because Valentine's Day has passed, doesn't mean we should go back to life as usual. Keep showing that love.

Hey, I am thinking it might be a good idea to start a new business. I would like a place where anyone could come in and get tested for all the vitamin deficiencies. What could it hurt for someone to know if they are lacking in essential vitamins that keep our bodies working at peak efficiency. We are becoming a society that wants to fix the problem before it gets out of hand, it should be easy to get tests for things that are easy to fix, Too many people are suffering needlessly, when all they need is to get some vitamin D or some active form of B12, etc. Maybe it's cause we live in small-ville Montana; but I find it unacceptable that I can not get the tests I want without the hassle of finding a doctor that will sign off on them.

Thanks everyone for sending us all the good ideas for our trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I have received quite a bit of information that will help with the planning. We are trying to decide which route will be the best. Hwy 2 is a pretty straight shot. Interstate 90 runs past Mt. Rushmore (been there). Or we could decide to drive thru Canada one way. I just love a good road trip. Smiles.

I am planning a road trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Never been there before, a good time to go should be in early fall. We can catch the fall colors and visit a few lighthouses. Vitamins, who in the world besides a chemist could ever figured these things out? If they are so good for you, then why don't the doctors ever check our vitamin levels? I can tell you that I have been researching and reading, trying to learn enough to treat myself. I'm no chemist and don't want to be. I had heard from others in my family that some of the problems in our family history could be from mutated genes. I had the gene test and just found out that I have two of the mutated genes. So what do these two mutated genes (677 and 1298 gene) tell me? That I may have a problem with the enzyme, that is needed to use vitamin B correctly, which leads to other problems related to not getting enough B's. They have other tests that you can take which will tell you just what vitamins you are deficient in and a test for homocysteine levels. If I could, I would get tested for all the things that can be fixed fairly easy, vitamins, thyroid, etc. Doctors of today, don't seem to have sufficient knowledge of, or care much about preventative care. You know, one day soon they will check your genes and much more at birth; then give you the exact supplements you need to avoid most health issues in your life time. This is a good time to be alive and the future looks brighter than ever.

Have you ever watched the show, West Wing? We are enjoying this show immensely. Reminds me of that old movie called Dave. In the movie Dave (a nice normal guy) finds himself in the position of being the president of the United States. Dave was only interested in doing the right thing. In the West Wing, the president and his team are trying hard to do right by the American People, and the whole world. They bring up all kinds of important issues. There is a limit to what any president can do. Makes for a very good show watching them struggle over the problems of being in power and trying to do good for the world. I think there are 154 episodes available on NetFlix.

Other than that, we are enjoying an easy winter here in Montana. Looks like the deer are having an easy winter also. The other day we saw a really big owl checking out our chickens. Hope he finds some good mice to eat instead.

The new water pressure tank works great. The new tank doesn't leak, much. There is a big Union-Nut that connects it to the water line; this is where it leaks a tiny bit. I did have a giant pipe wrench, but of course I needed two giant wrenches. Probably could have borrowed one, but I would rather own another. I love my tools. I have built two houses with a bit of help from the family; this one was the last, don't plan to build any more. If our kids decide on building their own houses, I would indeed plan on giving them all the help I can muster. Can just see me now, loading up my truck and hauling my tools across country to help with their building. The tools, obviously, will be for them to use; I of course, plan on being the boss. Smiles.

Twenty years is not enough, Our water pressure tank is leaking already and has obviously been leaking for years. Oh My, we found mold growing back behind there. It is not a pretty site. I think we are suppose to dry the wall, then soak it with bleach, then dry the wall again, then paint it with some special paint. The walls are plywood in that room, no drywall. And it would take days to finish the job if we waited for the whole thing to dry, after we get it completely wet again with bleach. We don't want to be out of water for days. Perhaps I can cut the bad plywood out and just replace it. Anyway, wish us luck, it's going to be a fun weekend.

Think I'll send Becca off to Glacier National Park to do some snow shoeing with friends. Then I can fix it just how I want to.

I find it very reassuring to see teenagers doing the right thing. Teenagers helping others, or just using their time in a constructive manner. Best of all is when they show respect towards others. Makes me just want to shake their hand. Never figured out why some want to be bullies or some just like to act as if you are the enemy.

There's an old saying I know about Teenagers: Do you know why God made teenagers?
So we would not be so sad when they leave home.
And to all of you out there that are dealing with teenagers, teach them all you can, while you can. Most will appreciate the time and wisdom you share with them. Even more so as the years go by. Try to remember that when we were their age, we weren't always the smartest cookie in the bunch either, many of us were also lacking in the social skills department.

Recovering from the holidays is always a chore. It could be that getting back to normal seems to be a let down from all the excitement of the past month. While taking down the decorations, I realized that I just had too much clutter. So my plan, as I remove the decorations, is to package up what I have been keeping for the kids and to send it now. That way I won't have that much to unpack next year. Maybe it's just the anticipation of the new year and wanting it all to be clean and new again. Am I going through an early spring cleaning?

Steven and I went out snowshoeing on New Years day. No big hoopla the night before, just an easy night-in with a glass of wine and a good movie.
This year our goal is to bring a smile to your face and a bit of tasty, healthy food to your table.

In the city of Chicago on a cold, dark snowy night, a blizzard was setting in.
A little boy was standing on the corner selling newspapers.
People were scurrying in and out of the buildings, trying to stay warm.
The little boy was so cold, that he was finding it hard to concentrate on selling his papers.

For the first time, we enjoyed a Christmas tree lit-up with candles; this was a very special Christmas tree. Friends invited us over for an old German tradition of lighting the tree. Modern LED lights are nice, but we really enjoyed this for a change. There was plenty of candle light for the whole room. Not sure if it was the candle light or the room full of friends, but you could certainly feel the spirit of Christmas. We sang Christmas carols and our friend Carole, played her 36 string instrument (a harp of some kind). Wish you all could have been there.

Playing in the snow and creating those long-lasting snowmen; for us, that's what this week was all about. In fact I might have over done it a bit; I'm coming down with a head cold and quite the cough. Every winter now, I catch a cold and then get a dry cough that lasts till June. I'm sure it's from being in this dry, closed up house. It's extra dry here with our wood heat and all. I have tried just about everything the doctors tell me to do, and still the cough comes, and won't go away.

Well we finally gave into temptation and checked on lowering our house insurance bill using AARP's Hartford company. And boy am I glad we checked it out. We lowered our insurance by quite a bit, guess somethings get better with age. Smile!

The weather has been so warm that none of our snow has been sticking around. I know that there are quite a few of you that live where it's too warm to snow for Christmas; but to me it just doesn't seem like Christmas without the snow. So today when it started snowing, I could feel that excitement building inside me. You know that joy of waking up and having snow on the ground, wondering if you would have to get dressed for school or maybe they are going to call a snow day. Our snow is a bit dry for making snowmen, but you can still grab a handful and bring-in to surprise that certain someone sitting at the computer next to you. Oh the games that we play!

I believe that there is a little bit of Santa Claus in all of us; it's the little bit that makes walking down the streets decorated with all the Christmas lights and snowflakes on the windows such a treat. Like meeting that special friend at the coffee shop for peppermint hot chocolate or a fancy latte. You can feel the spirit of Christmas all around You. I stopped by the takeout window today for a quick coffee and was surprised to have the attendant tell me that the car ahead of me had already paid for my coffee. Just a small example of generosity brought on by the Christmas season. You can see more examples around each of our communities, the toys-for-tots drive and also the coats-for-kids.
Lets pull together for a very Merry Christmas!

We have been reading-up on Golden Retrievers. Seems as though many Goldens (dog breed) are predisposed to having allergies. They say that a raw food diet might be the best thing to feed Goldens, mostly meat and eggs. I'm thinking I need a second opinion about what to feed to my Mother's doggie. We have been reading that most of the commercial dog food is bad for Goldens with allergies. Even feeding fish is bad for some dogs with allergies. Our mixed breed (Mocha) dog gets store bought dog food with a salmon base. Seems to work great, except for her fish breath. Maybe someone out there could drop us a line about what dog food might be best for Goldens?

Our Christmas tree lights are up. What a sight. Those new LED lights are kind of nice. Low power and low amount of heat. They should be much safer than the old styles.
Just about time for Christmas music. Most all Christmas music is nice, but our favorite is the old Alabama's Christmas album.

It's Black Friday and we did not buy one single thing. All the hype is totally lost on us. I would rather clean up our woods and watch a bomb-fire, than to go to the mall and shop. And that is OK, cause Becca is in charge of Christmas shopping around here anyways. She hunts all year for the perfect gifts to get and by the time Thanksgiving is here, she is mostly done. We love the excitement of the holidays, the lights, the music; it's never too early for Christmas music in this house. Becca bakes up a storm and shares with friends and neighbors, decorates the house and can't wait to put the tree up. The biggest discussion this year is whether or not to go live-tree or use the artificial one. I am sure if she thinks about it any longer we will do both.

Well things are changing a bit again this year. Our son and his wife are buying an older house along the Oregon coast, in need of some tender loving care, and our daughter and her family are getting ready to buy 50 acres with an older run-down farmhouse in Kentucky. Sounds like a lot of work in store for all of them. Now they are on opposite sides of the country though, I guess that means we are in the middle now and everyone will have to come-home to Montana for the family get togethers.
Sounds fair to me (smile).

However you spend your holiday month, try to do it stress free.

   Happy Thanksgiving.
   Here we are again, Thanksgiving time.
  This time of time of year the weather is cooling, guests are coming and it's all about food, shopping and football. We are boycotting the eating part this year and will be spending our afternoon at the local community dinner serving up the turkey dinner. Afterwards we plan to spend time at the health club for a hard workout. Becca needs to be in top physical form for shopping.

I had to cut all my hair off, seems it's good that I don't paint very often. I tried spraying and brushing, both with the same results. Each day as I did the cleanup, it looked like there was more paint on me than on that ceiling. I knew enough to wear a hat but I got hot and took it off. So I did the only sensible thing, Becca gave me a nice military hair cut. Sure feels good to have that job done.

Saw some brave turkeys in the yard today. It did run thru my mind, just how good one would taste. For the past few years there have been lots of turkeys around. Surprising how those big slow birds prosper and stay alive with all the wild cats and bear around here. Someone should tell them that, next week would be a good time for them go camping up in the hills. These turkeys have learned which of the neighbors like to feed them and where to find the pet and livestock feed.
Becca was busy hanging out some of the pottery bird houses she's been making. They change and evolve with every bird house she makes. I guess there is a certain building code when it comes to the correct way to make-um.

Politicians seldom do what is best for "We The People". But our Veterans have always done THEIR best. I believe Thomas Jefferson said, some blood must be spilt from time to time to keep this country strong. Well he didn't say it exactly like that, but I understand what he was saying. He meant that if we show we were strong, with the will to fight, then no one would dare attack us. As much as I don't like war, I do like feeling that no country dare attack the United States of America. Thanks Veterans, thanks for doing your part to keep us all safe.

On a lighter note, we got snow again. This morning we were smiling, driving down the road enjoying our world covered in snow, when a guy walking up the side of the road was waving his hands in the air like crazy. The road was covered in ice and we were just approaching the top of a hill to go down. I got right on my breaks before I could see any problems ahead. My anti-lock breaks were performing perfectly, I was slowing down a little with no skidding at all. Now, going down the hill, I see two cars in my lane stopped and stuck on the ice, trying to get up the hill. And coming up the ice packed hill, two more cars in the other lane. I'm still hard on my breaks, continuing to slow down just a little. I knew I would have to go right between the the two parked cars in my lane and the two cars coming up the hill in the other lane. It was a little tense for Becca, but the two guys coming up the hill and I, kept things slow and totally in control. Lesson here was to slow down even more when going down ice covered hills, and don't panic!!!!

How about that vote? We did vote, and we're proud that we did. We are also really glad that it's over and we don't have to listen to them any longer this year.

Enjoy your Veteran's Day, and, as the cold weather sets in around the country, take time to help out a neighbor in need. We plan on going down to the community dinner this Thanksgiving and lending a couple helping hands.

Now I have two Reliant Peach trees and one Polly Peach tree. I was a bit shocked to hear peaches grow good in Montana. Since then I have been working towards growing some. Today I expanded the fence around all three of them; used about 90 feet of wire. I did have individual fences that were 6 feet in diameter; but them pesky deer were reaching over for a nibble. This next summer I may see my first peaches. I can still remember 47 years ago, near Sacramento, just how wonderful it was to pick a ripe peach from our own trees.

I know, you may be thinking, November, and this nut is still gardening. I have never denied my love for growing plants and raising farm animals. Now I'm thinking, with this better fence, I have room for one more tree; I wonder what kind I should get?

I (Becca) spent the day at the art show in Kalispell today. The local nursery opened up two of their large greenhouses for a three day kick off to the holidays. The local artist from around NW Montana, all come together for this homegrown art show. It was one long day, but I loved it; meeting all the others artists around the area was great. There's a lot of talent out there locally, the assortment was truly amazing. Buying local right from the artist themselves lets you see the pride and hard work that goes into each piece.
Support your local artist this year, it brings the enjoyment back into holiday shopping.

Hey, how about those world series games? I did catch some of it. We sure do enjoy all the baseball highlights. Reminds me of the days I spent playing baseball in the minor and major league. I played 4 years total, short stop, third base, and mostly pitcher. I could pitch that hard ball exactly where I wanted it. Too bad I could only throw a slow ball. See, that was my problem; I would strike out every player that didn't get a hit. No body got a walk off of my pitching. One time in a big play off game, they must have hit 5 homers off of me. We had good hitters also, I think we won that game.

Nice to go back in those memories and bring up good ones. Well it's that time of year again; we all seem to remember back to when we were kids and being around so much family and friends. Must be the Thanksgiving holiday creeping in on us again. This day more than any of the others seems to conjure up the past.

We had our first snow this week, a little premature but it was here all the same. About 6 inches of shimmering white wonderment. The first snow of the year has always brought about good feelings for me. I love watching the flakes fall and begin to cover the ground with it's white blanket. Have a safe and happy Halloween evening and don't let those little princesses and space aliens get ya.

Kids today don't even know who Roy Rogers and Dale Evans were. I can watch these guys on the oldies channel and forget all my worldly troubles. Oh what I would give to have a great new cowboy show on TV to watch.

Steven and I took a walk along the creek yesterday. It was a wonderful evening, the sun was still high and the colors of the leaves were quite a sight. We have a bike trail that was that was built from an old converted railroad track, located just down from our place, it winds through fields along side a creek. It was our first trip down that path since we moved in here (18 years now). Just goes to show you that no matter how long you live some where, there are always new wonders to be found.

I used to think that raking and playing in the leaves with the kids was fun; now I find that watching others play in the leaves is just as much fun. Do yourself a favor and get out and enjoy the beauty of the fall season before the weather locks you in for another long winter.

After all that political junk, I'm ready for some peace and quiet. I welcome back the McDonald's commercials and that little gecko guy. I normally don't make my political decisions until I go thru the official voters pamphlet. I don't let anyone on TV or anyone else tell me who to vote for. Wish we could take all that money spent on campaign commercials and spend it on real jobs instead. Lord knows there is plenty of work to be done.

Lets all go to the rodeo! Becca and I had a wonderful time at our local Fair and Rodeo this year. Sure was great watching the cowboys and cowgirls riding their hearts out. You never know when you are going to catch something on camera that is truly amazing. Don't want to spoil it for you, but wait till you see what happens to this horse (video below). Lucky that the rider was already off.

Fall is the time of year when we really need to watch out for the bears around here. The neighbor told me black bears were enjoying his fruit trees. I said, "better than having those pesky bears in my garbage cans".

One year those dumb bears were trying to get into my garbage cans; instead of lifting off the plastic lid, they nearly shredded my rubber-maid can. Another time I left one garbage bag in the back of my pickup, you could clearly see that a bear covered in mud had climbed all over the truck before finding that one bag of garbage reward. In the past 20 years we have seen bears 3 times and picked up their left behind garbage mess 3 times. We feel the bears are no real problem around here. The Black Bears for the most part, pose no danger to people, pets, or livestock.
Can't say that about the wolves, what the heck were they thinking?

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers about our daughter and her family losing their house to a fire. They are all fine and have found a place to rent already. They were lucky enough to find a place close to the kids schools and friends. This will ease the burden of being separated from everything and everyone they are connected to.

Today we are making pumpkin cheese squares. Our pumpkins grew good this year and now it's time to make the goodies.

Our daughter Katie and her family in Kentucky, just lost their house to a fire on Tuesday evening. It was a fast fire that sure could have been dangerous if anyone had been home. Their family of five, three dogs, and many chickens were all safe. The dogs were just far enough away that they could hide from the heat. The chickens found a way out of their enclosure and flew the coop. Very little in the way of material things, made it thru the fire. While digging thru the rubble today, they did find a few pieces of pottery still in good shape. We had heard that good high-fired pottery would survive most fires. It is times like this when you thank the Lord for keeping them all safe. While they wait to find out which door the Lord opens for them now, they have their faith and each other to lean on.

It's Columbus Day on Monday and is this really a holiday? The age old question, did Columbus really discover America? If not, why are we celebrating Columbus Day, are they still teaching that in school?

We went from 80 degrees one day, to snow on the nearby hills the next. It feels cold outside. I just wanted to get outside and get a few pictures of the birdhouses, and I almost had to go back in the house and get my gloves on. What a change. Life is always full of change, learn to relax and embrace it.

Me Again. We just watched the movie "Me Again". If you're like me, a bit over sensitive, this movie will have you laughing and even bring a tear or two. We recommend this movie, along with some Chi Tea of course, makes for a relaxing evening at home.

I hear there are 30 fires burning around our part of the country. I am totally amazed that this country doesn't have a fleet of aircraft that could put out fires quickly. Just in Montana we often burn 100,000 acres in one year. If for some reason the winds picked up to 40 mph for a few days, there could be a disaster of epic per portions. A disaster from fire could hit any part of this country. I would certainly pay more tax to have an air fleet for fires. Till then, around here nearly every August thru October is smoke season.

Becca is busy making pottery bird houses. Having a fun time figuring out how to keep the removable top on, while making it easy to hang them. Three years of making pottery and finally we are going to make our first showing at a local art festival. We have over 100 nice pieces for sale. It will be just in time to kick off the holiday season here in the valley. A three day Art Show the first week of November; we were pretty lucky to have gotten a booth.

We picked Hubbard Squash that was bigger than a basket ball today. This isn't my first year growing Hubbard, I think this is the biggest I have ever seen them grow here though. Geese are flying south, humming birds are gone, even some trees are turning colors. It's a perfect time of year. The sounds of autumn are so peaceful. A nice time to be out and about.

While Becca and I were reading up about some hikes in Glacier National Park, the Harrison Lake hike said you had to "Ford" the river. Had to scratch my head on that one. Don't think I ever had to Ford a river before. With a little more investigating, Ford means to wade across. Well maybe Ford means to wade thru deep water. The river was large enough and deep enough, to make us think twice about it. In the slide show below, you can see us getting wet crossing the river. It was a 9 mile hike, round trip, it would have been a little easier if we would have started out in the correct spot. We missed the starting point a little and traveled up and over a hill before figuring out that we could have started a mile or so closer. Well you know it's all about the trip and not the destination, (thats what they say anyway).

I am looking forward to clear days again. Hard to get any clear photo shots or even do much hiking, with so much smoke in the air. Forest fires are common around here, but this year we have had fires close enough that the entire skyline is a constant haze.

Was thinking of going down to the hot air balloon festival in New Mexico. I have always wanted to make the trip, just never seemed to be the right time. Let us know if any of you have been there and what you thought of it.

Travelling the Rocky Mountains this time of year lets you get up close with some of our magnificent wildlife. They are all on the move now, migrating from summer grounds to more hospitable country, suitable for the long winter ahead. Watching the antelope play and seeing the elusive wolves as they traverse the open fields. After living here for so many years, I'm still am in awe of the wild outdoors of Montana. Moose, elk, bear, turkeys and deer walk right by my house like they own this place. Then don't really cause any trouble, so we feel lucky to see them. Elk are perhaps my favorite visitors, they seem very shy and never stay long. We love to hear the bugling elk.

Our 80 degree days are nearly gone. Such a nice time of year though. The garden is loaded, squash and pumpkins bigger than a basket ball. Amish tomatoes, strawberries, peppers, garlic, yukon potatoes, carrots and corn. Oh My! We might need a larger freezer. We purchased most of our seed this year from an organic gardening store, I think that we should be able to harvest the seeds and use for next years garden.

Becca does salsa! Once you have tasted good homemade salsa, no other salsa will do. It's been years since I've had regular spaghetti. Adding salsa to the spaghetti makes it get up and dance.
There is one problem with homemade salsa though; I can't get enough of it onto my favorite chips. So when no one's around, I just spoon it up like soup. Do you think I'm weird? I know what your thinking, is it hot salsa? Sure is, I like it hot enough that my lips turn a bit more red. This is the first year that I was able to grow my own hot peppers. Normally the growing season is just to cold and short. This year I started three plants indoors. Wow did that pay off; I had no idea that pepper plants would put out such quantity. Wonder what else they are good for besides salsa. If you have any great ideas, drop me a line.

Montana is quickly settling into the fall harvest time. We're waiting for the weather to change so that it will set my pumpkins and winter squash. I love this time of year, I suppose that you hear me say that about every season. It's true, there's something about all of them that I enjoy. I can't get over the excitement of the falling leaves or the first winter snow, the new budding flowers or the warm summer days.

Yesterday we were invited over to walk through a flower garden of a friend; she had planted a large area of just Dahlias this year. We took the camera with and came back with some awesome pictures to share. While enjoying the flowers and visiting, a bird flew into the window and fell to their deck. Stunned, she layed there for quite sometime; giving us the opportunity to get a few nice photos of her. We all watched as she slowly became aware of her surroundings again. Soon she flew off to play with the other birds.

It seems early to me, but I have noticed a large flock of geese flying south. I wonder, if you look at the farmers almanac or other sources, if you can tell what kind of winter we will have by the time that the birds start heading south. Would it be the earlier they leave, the harsher the winter or would it be a warmer winter? Maybe I'll write that down and keep an eye on the way things turns out this year.

If you take the time to break from your hectic day and enjoy what there is around you, life suddenly seems a bit less stressed.

Zucchini, Yes, you know them things. We got um coming out our ears. Froze some, made zucchini relish, zucchini chocolate bread, fried up a bunch and have give it away every chance we get. Our 7 chickens like to eat the largest one each day. None has been wasted so far. We, or better I say I, accidental planted double what we meant to plant. When I planed them, I looked for the labels that I had put onto every pot, and I didn't see the label, so I just figured I would plant everything I had. Later I looked at the empty pots and I could see that if I had just turned the pots around, them dang labels were still there. Maybe I'll put labels onto both sides next year.

Three momma Turkeys came by with 30 babies yesterday. That is the most we have seen at one time. Nice to see them doing so well. Hey, maybe they would like some zucchini.

Been busy at the fair this week, yesterday they had the cookie decorating contest. Contestants decorate the cookies, turn them in to be judged and then they get to eat them. You know what is going through those little brains of theirs, more icing and more candy decorations on top. There was some full cookies if you know what I mean! Tomorrow they have a llama and alpaca costume show along with the judging, can't wait for those pictures.

Becca has put together another nice video to enjoy.
In this video, I was shooting the equestrian event at Rebecca Farm, sitting at the hardest jump they had. Many riders could not make the jump, but don't worry, no one got hurt. Steven's mom went along also, we put a camera in her hands and let her loose. She did a great job and got some wonderful pictures; don't miss her video at the bottom of the page.

There were five days of Events to view, including Dressage, Cross Country and Show Jumping. Dressage shows a horse's ability to perform in a parade and also shows how well the horse and rider communicate. Cross Country seems the most difficult Event to me.

We are going to be making up a little zucchini relish this weekend. My nephew Lane and Steven have been letting me know in not to subtle of a way that it is that time again. I can't seem to make enough of either the salsa or the relish, will have to step it up a bit this year. Lucky for me, there is no shortage of zucchini or peppers this year.

Rodeos, hiking in Glacier National Park, eating Chocolate Ice Cream, I can't decide what I like more. This last month of summer is always a busy one here in Montana. Not knowing if we will have an Indian summer or an early fall, makes you want to get out and enjoy all there is of this wonderful country. We have signed up to photograph the Montana State Fair again this year. It always amazes me at the range of exhibits they have. From young to old, there is something for everyone. If you have a large garden or just a few pots on the patio, the produce or flowers you have could win you a ribbon. As a child we were accustomed to going to the fair just to ride the rides. If you lived on a farm you could enter your prize winning chicken or rabbit. But there is so much more to enjoy when entering those fair gates now.

Becca put together a slideshow of our hike on the Kootenai Lakes Trail, just outside of Waterton Township in Canada. From Waterton you take a boat ride to the southern end of the lake and start your hike from there. Wonderful scenery and even saw a moose.

DeerLake Weekly Letter, Baby Deer In The Yard

It's like living on open range; every year horses come to pay us a visit. Sometimes two, more often though it's three or four horses, even up to seven at one time. I'm just in a quandary trying to figure out what to do about it. You see if I chase them off, then there could be an accident with a car or something. Don't want that. If I pen them up and start looking for the owners, then I'm setting a precedents and every time their horses go missing, they will come to my house looking for them. The problem is, those horses can eat all my flowers and all the small fruit trees in just minutes. We could fence them out, which would be quite a bit of money and time. Or we could call for them to be picked up by the authorities. Don't want to do either of these options.

On a good note of not having the whole acreage fenced, we have visiting momma deer and their babies, turkeys too. It's quite a delight watching as they romp around the yard. I love getting up in the morning and sitting out on the deck with a cup of coffee. This time of year is a delight in Montana. It smells so fresh and the sounds of squirrels and birds chirping and singing to one another is so peaceful. At that moment in time all is right with the world.

Well we took Steven's Mom down to Costco to get some hearing aids. Not knowing much about them ourselves, we were thinking that there couldn't be that much to it. Had them check the ears, ordered-up the hearing aids and waited for the miracle of hearing to occur. Well they came in on time, had them fitted and went on our way. After a few days and Mom not being able to tell any improvement, we went back to have them checked. The lady behind the counter told her that she just needed to get-used to them. A few more days go by and still nothing is better. We returned again to Costco to talk with another lady and was told they would have to be sent away and reprogrammed. She had also purchased the bluetooth devise that would allow the TV sound to come directly out of the aids. This was a mistake since we never could get bluetooth to work! The hearing aids never worked right and the bluetooth never worked at all. Well long story short, she ended up returning the hearing aids and she still can't hear very well.
Who would have known.
Everyone eventually needs them.
I would have thought they would be plug and play.

It's amazing how just a couple weeks of good weather has changed the garden. The garden is growing by leaps and bounds. We had to pull up the lettuce and bok choy today; there was more then we could eat. Steven tossed lettuce out into the yard and the momma deer brought her babies in to eat tonight. One of the does had twins, they are such a delight to watch bounce around the yard.

With the dry hot weather down south, both of our kids and their families are looking to move back to the cool weather of the northwest. Our son just received a ranger position in Bandon Oregon, quite a change from the Austin Texas area. And our daughter is looking into applying for her PHD, either in Washington or Montana. Would be nice to have them all live closer for a change.

Becca took two trips to Washington state in the last month, I think she done enough driving for a while.
A few weeks ago her mother turned 90. Everyone showed up for an amazing birthday party.
A few short days later, Becca's momma passed away. She was a kind lady with a smile and a hug for everyone.

My Lucky Alaska Fishing Trip.

My favorite sister invited me up to Alaska for a two week visit. She said we should go to the Little Susitna River and fish for a few days. Sure I said, lets go fishing. The fishing was great, caught my limit of three fish every day. Well, I'm the friendly sort, so one night I walked around the campgrounds giving out my "Howdies". I got invited into a lively campfire group; we were all sitting around having some laughs when a nice guy said,"I have an extra fishing charter seat next Friday, one fella canceled. Anyone here want to go for free?". I said sure, I'll go. On Friday, about 12 of us took off in a small prop plane with pontoons. Soon we landed on some river, jumped into a little boat and started fishing. All of us caught fish like crazy. After an hour everyone had their limit and they put us off to shore. I was having the time of my life, so I kept right on fishing from the shore. Others would watch me catching fish and ask how I could catch so many. There was no trick, I just had to put in a little effort. I caught nearly forty salmon, around ten pounds each, that day. Charter fishing is pretty nice; they bait your hook, clean the fish, get your lunch and anything else you want. A nice day to remember. Alaska is a good place to go fishing in August.

Hot Days Ahead! A reminder that pets and livestock need extra water to drink. My seven chickens are drinking nearly double their normal amount. And the dogs don't want to play outside for very long.

On the way over to the Washington coast, Becca took Hwy 20, the North Cascades Hwy. The first link below (Visiting Rainy Pass in Washington State) has a video that will bring you a few minutes of calm. They really did mean it when naming that road Rainy Pass, I have never been on that stretch of road when it wasn't raining at least a little.

We did enjoy the fireworks, but what about the effect on our environment. I for one, am totally ready to upgrade to laser light shows. It's time we give our air, land and water a break from all that pollution. On the Coulee Dam in Washington, they have a laser light show that we really enjoyed. The mix of lights on the water, with music and a narrated story really make the evening special.

Becca made it back from Washington state in one piece; she made the trip over with daughter Katie and the two granddaughters. Her Mother's 90 birthday surprise party went off with out a hitch and everyone had a great time. The weather didn't cooperate which is usual, but it didn't hamper the festivities at all.

Our neighbors to the north in Canada are having their independence day on July 1st. We love their country, British Columbia has some of the most spectacular landscapes; Becca and I took a trip thru Jasper Park and it was fantastic. Very friendly people and just a lovely country to visit.

The Fourth of July is always a busy time in our small corner of Montana, the tourist season is in full swing. Even though the snow is still quite deep up on the top of Glacier Park, the famous Going To The Sun road has finally opened.
We have old fashioned Ice Cream Socials in the Kalispell city park and many arts and craft shows set up around the valley. Rodeos and car shows, and yes the parades with carnivals and all.

Just two more weeks till the big Equestrian events at Rebecca Farm.
Our cameras are charged and ready. We're going to do our best to get some great photos and video of those magnificent jumping horses.
With more than 450 competitors, 350 volunteers, and over 20,000 spectators. In addition to the competition, a trade fair with arts and crafts is also offered throughout The Event with a wide range of food concessions.
"The Event at Rebecca Farm is truly world class."

A big "Hello" going out to all the DeerLake readers from rainy Montana. This is Katie, Steven and Becca's daughter. The kids and I are just stopping by for a short visit from Kentucky. It would be nice if the sun would shine just a little on our little vacation, but I am thankful for the rain just the same. It sure is nice to see the old town where I grew up and share some old memories with my kids. So much has changed, yet so much is the same. You can't get an ice cream cone for a dollar any more, but you can get homemade ice cream made from locally grown ingredients. What a treat!

What a joy it is to see the children laughing and horsing around with their cousins. They also tested their skills when trying to put the final touches on some special pieces of pottery. Perhaps the sweetest part of our visit is just being together with family. Hug your loved ones while you can.

Such a nice time of year, we seen our first new fawn today, she was just hours old. The wild rose blossoms have opened today. Summer is in full swing and life on our little farm is growing by leaps and bounds. On our way home from town today we stopped to admire the llamas just a couple of blocks from our house. They just moved in and brought with them about 28 or 30 llamas, 2 goats and 4 horses. What a site to see, as they all run through the fields enjoying the sunshine.

The grandkids showed up today from Kentucky, a long way to travel just to visit with grandma and papa. OK maybe they didn't come just to see us, but it's good to have them here anyway. They will be making the trip with Becca over to her mother's 90th birthday party. It's a surprise party!! So don't any of you tell her we are coming. It has been quite an ordeal getting this party arranged without her knowledge. Relatives and friends are coming from all over the country; I hope it's not too much of a surprise.

I would have rather been run over by a truck than have to sit there and watch you go through that.

Hi Folks, today we're enjoying the wonderful scent of lilac flowers. It's such a treat when lilacs are in full bloom. Next to bloom will be the wild roses; there are several large bushes that could be older than 100 years. They have small, lightly scented pink flowers. Some wild rose bushes are 10 X 20 X 10 feet tall. As we walk the property, our eyes are constantly looking for the baby fawns; they are normally born early in June. Any time now, I'm going to see my first fawn for this year. They are so precious with their fabulous caramel color with white spots. The turkeys have been setting for some time now and their babies should also be showing up. It's such a nice time to be out and about in Montana.

Paradise is not a place. Paradise is a state of mind!

If paradise is a state of mind, then how do we keep paradise when we return home from vacation?
If we are doing what we love, then that moment is paradise. If we are with our friends and family who we love, then those moments are paradise. If we are in our vehicle driving, or walking in a location where we can smell the flowers, then those moments could also be paradise.
Stop... breathe, then take a look around. Yep, right there is paradise for the moment!

Hi Folks, we should be able to feed the whole neighborhood this year. Our garden is way ahead of schedule. So far, it has been pretty easy, the rain has been taking care of the watering and the weeds are pretty much under control. It's those tomatoes that give me all the trouble, I can grow them big, but they get so heavy they fall over.
I'm thinking some 6 X 6" wire might hold them upright and still allow me to pick them. Perhaps it's time to go to YouTube and watch some gardening videos about tomatoes. Their video library is pretty amazing.

My car's heater and air conditioner needed the cabin filter changed (you can tell when it begins to smell). I typed it up in Google and found a video on YouTube that showed me how to do it perfectly. I think I will need to change the fan belts next, wish me luck.

I took my Mother in law to the health club today and she joined a tai chi class. I didn't join them but I did watch awhile and it looked very interesting. Tai chi is known for it's gentle movements to reduce stress and offers other health benefits also.

Remembering My Best Friend
I remember my best friend, Kim Duncan, a kid stricken with cystic fibrosis and it's complications. We hit it off right away when we first met, seems we were kindred spirits. It was our junior year in high school and did we ever chase girls and go to parties. Kim was a friendly guy, he knew every person in town, especially the girls. Though he was a total weakling and was not much to look at, he still managed to get all the girls to talk with him. As he got older and married, he put family first and job second. I always admired that. Even though he had every card stacked against him, he still gave his all to do what was right every day. By the time Kim made age 50, his body was shutting down and he could no longer hold a job. Kim passed at the young age of 52.
I miss you pal, Steven.

Remembering my Dads
I was fortunate to have two loving Dads. My first Dad passed when I was quite young, the memories I do have are of being outside in the gardens. He was a landscaper and would take my brother and I to work with him. The Dad who was there for most of my life was also a very loving Dad. There was never a time when he was not there for me, always with loving words of encouragement for whatever adventure I was about to begin. I have lost them both and they are missed very much.
I miss my Dads, Becca.

On this Memorial Day, remember those you have lost with loving thoughts and hold them dear to your heart.

I look so forward to these holidays, though I do not consider Memorial Day a day to go out and party.

Finally, most of Glacier Parks roads are open for visitors. Just had to get up there and see how things were going after a long winter. It's nice when you live close enough to one of our nations beautiful parks, that you can visit when ever you get a free day. My girl friend and I (Becca) had urge to go, go, go, so we went, went, went to Glacier National Park. Took a short hike, seen three nice water falls, and made it to one of my all time favorite places, Two Medicine. This place is always magic, hardly any humans around, but nature is loud and clear. I put together a video and a few photos for you, enjoy.

It's Armed Forces Day weekend, a good time to give a word of thanks to all those men and women out there working hard to secure our freedoms. Our oldest Grandson is now at Fort Benning GA for his basic training. Hard to believe that it has come to this, our fathers fought, our husbands and wives fought, our children and now our grandchildren. I pray for the day that a generation can grow up without the fear of war. Give them a call, write them a letter, let them know we appreciate all they are doing.

My Mother in law is the most family orientated person I have ever met. My whole life she has done everything possible to help us out. I mean this lady doesn't know how to say, "I'm to busy" or "I can't help with that". Yes this would be a pretty big deal for any Mom, but there is more, here is the rest of our story. Mom, is now turning 90 next month, has 7 kids, 25 grand kids and she has been there for all of us. She has taught me much about family, Thanks Mom.

Becca here, let me tell you a little more about my Mom.
Not only was she there for all of us, but she was also a foster mom. From the time I was about 10 yrs old, we always had other kids in the house. She was there for all of them, being a receiving home also, it was not uncommon for my brother and I to wake up with two or three more kids in the house. She kept extra clothes of every size along with extra roll away beds for quick easy setup. The children ranged from new born to teenagers, she took them all. I would say that my mother deserves the Mother of the year award. Thanks Mom we all Love You.

A note to my Mom, I think you're Great! My whole life I have admired everything you have done. I love you Mom, thanks for everything. Wishing you a nice Mother's Day.

Reminds me of the time my Mother was trying to learn to water ski. Well it was quite a time, first-try she fell to the left, second-try she fell to the right. The boat had lots of family and friends aboard and all were laughing having a good time. Then came Mom's third-try, she was really concentrating not to fall over to either side, she is doing it, Mom is kind of skiing. Stand up Mom, your almost skiing. Well I don't think my Mom ever stood up on skies that day. Not sure you could even truly say she was skiing, her butt was dragging in the water as she tried so hard. What a site, too bad we didn't have video cameras back then. I think later that summer my Mom did stand up on those water skies. Of course she did, my Mom could do it, she could do anything she set here mind to.
Fun memories, we all have them, and the good thing about that is we can recall them any time we like.

My Mother was my best friend here on earth
but sad to say I probably didn't realize that until she was gone.
She loved me when,

DeerLake Weekly Letter, Passing the Purple Hat and Gluten Free Lemon Angel Food Cake

Howdy Friends, how lucky we are to be eating our own fresh Kale. Our indoor garden is doing fairly well for being our first try at growing indoors-under-lights. Kale is suppose to be one of those superfoods. Not sure who said that. I don't see how I could ever just eat kale raw, just tastes green to me. Now when Becca cooks Kale into soups or anything else, the spices and all makes it taste just fine. But my favorite way to eat Kale is in a fruit smoothie. Start with Pineapple, Carrot, Kale, and 1 cup of water, now blend to liquefy, next add one very ripe banana, concentrated orange juice, 1/2 cup or more yogurt, honey and 14 ice cubes, now blend till the ice is in small pieces, Done. My fruit and vegetable smoothies are my favorite way to eat healthy food. If you know of a better smoothie recipe, send it to me.
Becca has been a little busy this week baking and making videos. Don't know how she expects me to loose weight when she cooks so good. She made a gluten free angelfood cake and then the next morning we made french toast with it, tasted way too good. Way Too Good!

I was watching a news story the other day in which they were telling of a neighborhood that was trying to change their city ordinance to exclude peacocks. Now you all know that we do not live in town or have neighbors that are real close. We do however have neighbors that own peacocks, and yes the peacocks do come visit us from time to time. At certain times of the year they make quite a bit of noise, but all in all they are one fabulous looking bird. When they come to visit they come in numbers of three to eight at a time. They scream at times, and they honk like a goose at times and we like to hear them. I put it to ya, what would you rather hear, cars, dogs? We feel lucky to enjoy deer, turkeys, peacocks, chickens, rabbits and occasionally moose, bear, wolf, and elk. In the scheme of things peacocks are among our favorite visitors.
