Finally, most of Glacier Parks roads are open for visitors. Just had to get up there and see how things were going after a long winter. It's nice when you live close enough to one of our nations beautiful parks, that you can visit when ever you get a free day. My girl friend and I (Becca) had urge to go, go, go, so we went, went, went to Glacier National Park. Took a short hike, seen three nice water falls, and made it to one of my all time favorite places, Two Medicine. This place is always magic, hardly any humans around, but nature is loud and clear. I put together a video and a few photos for you, enjoy.

It's Armed Forces Day weekend, a good time to give a word of thanks to all those men and women out there working hard to secure our freedoms. Our oldest Grandson is now at Fort Benning GA for his basic training. Hard to believe that it has come to this, our fathers fought, our husbands and wives fought, our children and now our grandchildren. I pray for the day that a generation can grow up without the fear of war. Give them a call, write them a letter, let them know we appreciate all they are doing.

My Mother in law is the most family orientated person I have ever met. My whole life she has done everything possible to help us out. I mean this lady doesn't know how to say, "I'm to busy" or "I can't help with that". Yes this would be a pretty big deal for any Mom, but there is more, here is the rest of our story. Mom, is now turning 90 next month, has 7 kids, 25 grand kids and she has been there for all of us. She has taught me much about family, Thanks Mom.

Becca here, let me tell you a little more about my Mom.
Not only was she there for all of us, but she was also a foster mom. From the time I was about 10 yrs old, we always had other kids in the house. She was there for all of them, being a receiving home also, it was not uncommon for my brother and I to wake up with two or three more kids in the house. She kept extra clothes of every size along with extra roll away beds for quick easy setup. The children ranged from new born to teenagers, she took them all. I would say that my mother deserves the Mother of the year award. Thanks Mom we all Love You.

A note to my Mom, I think you're Great! My whole life I have admired everything you have done. I love you Mom, thanks for everything. Wishing you a nice Mother's Day.

Reminds me of the time my Mother was trying to learn to water ski. Well it was quite a time, first-try she fell to the left, second-try she fell to the right. The boat had lots of family and friends aboard and all were laughing having a good time. Then came Mom's third-try, she was really concentrating not to fall over to either side, she is doing it, Mom is kind of skiing. Stand up Mom, your almost skiing. Well I don't think my Mom ever stood up on skies that day. Not sure you could even truly say she was skiing, her butt was dragging in the water as she tried so hard. What a site, too bad we didn't have video cameras back then. I think later that summer my Mom did stand up on those water skies. Of course she did, my Mom could do it, she could do anything she set here mind to.
Fun memories, we all have them, and the good thing about that is we can recall them any time we like.

My Mother was my best friend here on earth
but sad to say I probably didn't realize that until she was gone.

Howdy Friends, how lucky we are to be eating our own fresh Kale. Our indoor garden is doing fairly well for being our first try at growing indoors-under-lights. Kale is suppose to be one of those superfoods. Not sure who said that. I don't see how I could ever just eat kale raw, just tastes green to me. Now when Becca cooks Kale into soups or anything else, the spices and all makes it taste just fine. But my favorite way to eat Kale is in a fruit smoothie. Start with Pineapple, Carrot, Kale, and 1 cup of water, now blend to liquefy, next add one very ripe banana, concentrated orange juice, 1/2 cup or more yogurt, honey and 14 ice cubes, now blend till the ice is in small pieces, Done. My fruit and vegetable smoothies are my favorite way to eat healthy food. If you know of a better smoothie recipe, send it to me.
Becca has been a little busy this week baking and making videos. Don't know how she expects me to loose weight when she cooks so good. She made a gluten free angelfood cake and then the next morning we made french toast with it, tasted way too good. Way Too Good!

I was watching a news story the other day in which they were telling of a neighborhood that was trying to change their city ordinance to exclude peacocks. Now you all know that we do not live in town or have neighbors that are real close. We do however have neighbors that own peacocks, and yes the peacocks do come visit us from time to time. At certain times of the year they make quite a bit of noise, but all in all they are one fabulous looking bird. When they come to visit they come in numbers of three to eight at a time. They scream at times, and they honk like a goose at times and we like to hear them. I put it to ya, what would you rather hear, cars, dogs? We feel lucky to enjoy deer, turkeys, peacocks, chickens, rabbits and occasionally moose, bear, wolf, and elk. In the scheme of things peacocks are among our favorite visitors.

Sprucing up the place and getting ready for company season, Montana is a great destination place in the summers. Always looking for cute little ideas to decorate the yard. I heard about one idea I think we might want to try, might not be a bad idea if you try it also. It has to do with those solar lights everyone is getting for their gardens and patios, a few lights makes the nights much more inviting.
We are looking forward to going into Glacier National park for some springtime pictures. I hear that I might be able to get a few wolf shots and other baby critters. It's always a thrill when you come across the babies, it takes alot of patience to capture them on film. This month all the national parks around the country are having a free admission week between April 21st and 29th. Find a park close to you and get out there and enjoy it.

They like to refer to us as senior citizens,

I know a place you have never been to, Freezeout Lake, near Choteau Montana. This week, Becca and a friend made an overnight trip to see the thousands of snow geese and swans that use Freezeout as a staging point on their long migration north. Being three hours away from my house, overnight is best so we could be there at sundown the first night and sunrise the following morning. For the last two weeks in March this place is packed with birds, and photographers. You can just imagine the sounds that 100,000 to 400,000 birds are making. Coming from the California coast, Texas and the Gulf region, they are heading for the far northern reaches of Canada. This being one of their main stops, a great place for them to eat and rest-up for the remainder of their journey.

It's spring and I am in the mood for a little fun. Last fall we were thinking about getting a couple of yaks to put out on to our fenced one acre. Sounded pretty interesting, we have done most of the other farm animals and this was one I just had never imagined having. After all who do you know that has Yaks running around on their farm. Well after thinking on it awhile we decided to wait, not quite sure how the water situation would work out during those cold winter months around here. We had just about forgotten all about getting some gentle giant Yaks, when a local Yak farmer sent us an email, saying he had two that were ready for a new home. Still Steven is not quite sold on the idea, it's going to take a bit of convincing on my part.

Easter is coming soon, it is just around the corner and this year everyones creative juices are flowing. Several writers have sent in poems to be published, they are all wonderfully inspiring, which makes it hard to decide which ones we will be able use.

Never having had a horse to ride, sometimes I wonder what it would be like. We were raised on a farm of sorts, but my dad's idea of farm animals were the ones you get food from and that was not a horse. In the movies, horses are gentle giants ready to do any job you have for them. Many of our neighbors have horses and they seem to stand around most of the year, waiting for those long summer days just perfect for a ride. I feel like maybe I missed out, never having a horse to call my friend. I'm getting too old now to start riding, sure of that. Just sitting here day dreaming about horses, bet some of you have some great horse stories to tell?

Started some of our garden seeds indoors this year. With our short gardening season we normally buy many of our plants and only start a few of them from seed. So far just the rhubarb and peppers have not germinated. Rhubarb I thought was always just split in half to make another plant, can start them by seed also, who knew. With 6 inches of new wet snow on the ground, things are warming up and we are ready for spring and summer.

Howdy everyone, Easter in getting closer and with it is the coming of spring and a feeling of renewed life. The local garden and feed store sent out the word today that the baby chicks were in. As Easter draws near we are reminded of the new beginning which we have been given through our Lord dieing on the cross for us. It is fitting that spring and Easter go hand in hand. There are so many things to look forward to such as warm summer days, summer vacations, green pastures and long lazy days on the beach, or anywhere else you relax.
Easter 2012 itself is a great time to see the family, make plans, spring clean the house and get ready for the fun summer days ahead.

I spent my early years in Rancho Cordova California. I do hold fond memories for that California life. It was nicely paved streets, sidewalks and gutters. We played basket ball, baseball, four square, tether ball, dodge ball, football, and many more kinds of ball games. Our street was quiet enough that we could play right out in the middle of the street. I spent four years in little league baseball, oh man that was fun, had my name in the local paper many a time. Always felt bad that I did not keep those paper clipping to show my kids and grand kids. My first year in baseball we came in last place out of ten teams, we were the worst team ever. The next three years I was the pitcher, and each year we got a little bit better till my last year when we got first place. Man, after that last game I was feeling on top of the world.

Spring is just around the corner here in Montana. We are getting pretty excited to be out working in the yard once again. Becca has ordered all the seeds for this years garden and I have been busy putting together the cold frame green house. It's not that big, but will do for starting the seedlings. The snow is finally leaving most of the yard and the chickens are enjoying it tremendously. They are not to keen on walking across the snow covered ground. Not sure yet if we will be getting any baby chicks this year. I think that I might have to build something that will keep them completely separated from the layers. Looks like alot more work to me!!!!
Becca has been cooking alot, working up a good menu for St Patrick's Day. The more she looks for a good Irish recipe the more she discovers that she has been eating like that all her life. Her mother being Irish an all, I guess you just don't realize it when that is the way it has always been. Your mom doesn't say oh I am fixing Irish Stew tonight, she just says we are having stew. And who would have thought that rhubarb scones was an Irish dish also.

Well this weekend it's time to spring ahead with our clocks again.
I sure enjoy having those atomic clocks around, they not only set themselves, they also tell you the weather.

Here in Montana we try to stay aware that bears, lions, wolves, moose and other pesky critters that live here also. We have had the experience of seeing all but the lions right here on our 20 acres. You tend to not worry very much about it because you are more likely to be struck by lightning than to have an encounter with any of these dangerous creatures. It's the elk that have always been the elusive ones around here. Just 5 miles away the elk are seen all the time, they seem to be the shyest of them all, in our 20 years here we had never seen any of them. Until now, yesterday there was a whole herd of them just across the driveway, meandering through our woods. Too bad they didn't stay long enough for us to get the cameras out, would have been a fun photo shoot. Not sure where they were headed but I do hope they will stop by again.

Well listening to the news lately has brought disturbing stories of tornadoes plaguing the Eastern United States again. Our grandkids live in what they call tornado ally (Kentucky). After each storm we get the call from them telling us how they have to hide out from the storms. We know that many of you out there are in the same situation, to you we say stay as safe as you can.

I'm seeking the top management position in your heart.

At Izaak Walton Inn, it's time for the Snow Rodeo! The beautiful setting is the middle of the rocky mountains, off Hwy 2 in Montana.
They have goat roping, barrel races, and I'm not sure what they called it, but they had an inflated inner tube that they tied a red bandanna to. They would roll the tube down the hill and the contestant would have toski down the hill and catch the tube pulling the flag. The clock didn't stop until the red flag was in the air, or on the ground.
For the barrel racing they would ski (or snow shoe) up a slight hill, through a gate, then around 1 barrel and downhill to the 2nd barrel, around that and a slight uphill to the 3rd and last barrel. Once they make it around that, it's downhill to the finish line and for added funnyness, they threw in a twist, .,.. you have to cross the finish line backwards.

Folks came from all over and there were a few veteran contestants that you could tell have experience with this kind of fierce competition.

The rodeo clown had a couple of close encounters with the bucking inner tube but I think he managed to escape with only a scape or 2.

After the competition you can head back to the Izaak Walton Inn where you can enjoyed lunch in the dining room surrounded once again by artifacts from the old railroad days, dating back to it's arrival in Essex. The inside is like a cool museum of railroad stuff from yesteryear. Definitely a good place to stop if your ever in the neighborhood!

Becca and I used to climb over mountain tops, even in the past 10 years we have made many hard hikes mostly around Glacier National Park. The hiking has been slowing down a bit, seems harder and harder to make those long hikes. The last few times I was worried whether we were strong enough to make it all the way back from the mountain top. Man, I'm really going to miss those long hikes. As you get older, the things of the past seem farther and farther from your reach. Scaling back and learning new things such as pottery will hopefully give me some of those same great feelings I got when reaching the end of a long hard day out in those beautiful mountains. We like to make a few basic bowl and mug designs, but then the real fun comes when we challenge ourselves. Taking a 10 pound piece of clay and throwing the largest or the tallest pottery piece, or stacking two pieces together becomes something to be proud of. Pottery is an ancient art that has unlimited possibilities. If I can just make 4 or 5 great pieces each year, then maybe I won't miss them mountains so much., Ya Think?

Well Becca here and I am not so sure that I am ready to give up the hiking. I think it is in my blood to be out there finding what is around the next corner.

Spring is coming and I am anxious to see what kind of animals we end up getting this year, it's always fun to try something new. Steven loves working with all the animals, and I'm sure if he had his way we would have a large barn and several different kinds of critters. I'm content with working in the garden and exploring the great outdoors.

What does Valentine's Day mean to you? Since Valentine is a name, the question is not what it means, but to whom does it refer, and what did Mr. or Ms. Valentine do to deserve you asking them to be your beloved? OK, for the guys out there, just bring flowers, and for the gals out there, nothing wins your man's heart more than a simple home cooked meal and chocolate, chocolate cake, chocolate pudding, chocolate and strawberries, they all sound good to me.

I have been reading about, Time Banks, sure seems like a wonderful idea. The idea to is do something for someone, then instead of getting paid in money, you get paid by someone doing something for you. You trade hours of work, not money. Trading time and helping out neighbors. A simple idea, you donate an hour of your time and you collect an hour of time for any projects you might need done. I think this might deserve a little more investigating. What do you think?

Today we put together our new cold frame, just 4 feet by 3 feet and 18 inches high, it's like a tiny greenhouse for starting seeds in our cold climate. The summers here are short. We can normally start planting by June 1st, normally there are no more frosts after that. The cold frame lets light in thru all sides and I'll put 150 watt heat light in there to keep it nice and warm. This will surely be our best garden ever, I hope we have extra to share with the neighbors, chickens, deer, and maybe we can get some goats this year. Well maybe not the goats, been there and done that before, Becca gives me a real dirty looks when I start talking goats again. You see Becca milked goats for over two years, but that was over 30 years ago, seems to me she should be ready to go again. Guess I'll wait till after Valentines Day to bring goats up again.

Howdy, we are really getting spoiled with the warm winter here in Montana. Tonight I heard about how cold it is in Europe and Russia right now, wow, I feel for those guys.
How about those Giants, we're not big football fans around here but we do watch a few games and always enjoy the highlights. A Superbowl party is always on our agenda every year, seems like a perfect excuse to spend time with friends. This year we are having a few friends over, we plan to paint up some pottery, then watch the big game and play a little cards, it's going to be a Hoot.

You know how people say, I've been so so busy? Well for us we really are busy. At the bottom of this letter there is a list of some of the web sites Becca and I have been creating since 1997. We built our first web site and soon after we began to realize that fun and inspirational would be our focus, now we have 30 sites that keep us pretty busy. Has been a labor of love, especially the part where we get to travel around Montana and other parts of the country to get those special photos and videos.

I'm teaching my dog to growl. That was something she liked to do anyways to get our attention. Perhaps I should have used a different word then the growl command. When I say the word it sounds like I'm angry, so I have to be very careful to make it sound nice. That word just comes out sounding mean if your not careful. Our little mix breed, Corgi, Blue Healer, nearly 40 pounds now, sure has learned alot in just two years. The only problem we are having with her, is she chews the doggie door. I guess she would rather just have a hole there. Well that is just not going to work here in Montana, it gets cold here. I have tried spraying stuff on there that is suppose to taste terrible,, and it does taste terrible, they call it Rotten Apple. That seems to help a little, but it wears off and then she is right back to chewing on the doggie door again. I'm really hoping that she will grow out of this. We try to spend time playing with our Mocha dog every day, she is always ready to catch the ball or play a game of hide and seek.

One thing about having chickens around is that each day you need to go out and collect the eggs. Today was the first day I got 7 eggs from 7 chickens in one day. Well, maybe I missed one yesterday, or maybe it's from giving them exactly 8 hours of darkness each night and a big heated chicken coop. I have always taken the well being of my farm animals seriously. See the Chicken House.

We spent much of our lives in western Washington, where there were few days with frost and the grass would grow nearly year around. Raising cows was one of my favorite hobbies. We would get week old calves straight from the dairy farmers for nearly nothing and bottle feed them. I used to spoil the heck out of them, a dry warm bed, lots of grain and oats, I even took them for walks. Now living in Montana, a dry warm bed sounds like a hard thing to do in the winter. The grass only grows for 5 months and the water freezes for 4 months. I really miss raising those Holstein gentle giants. Back then I gave each of our children their own cow. That was my way of getting them to help out with some of the chores. Each of them picked out the one they liked the looks of and gave them a name. I still remember the names, Starblazer, and Red (soon to become Big Red). Perhaps I didn't think this thru cause as with all beef cows, three years old is prime for beef. We waited till the kids were off to camp that year, then off to the auction they went. There were 5 cows in that batch, their two and three others. The money sure did come in handy, there may not have been much profit but it was a nice saving account for sure.

We just about have a full load of pottery ready to burn in the kiln today. Lots of mugs and a few odd ball bowls too.

Oh the gloom and doom of winter, but don't despair. The days are getting longer and each day gets a bit warmer now. They say the amount of sunlight you get each day will determine much of your winter mood. So find a way to get out there, it's a great way to fight off the winter blues. Living here in the Rockie mountains has it's cold and snowy season alright, but when you wake up and look out to those bright white mountains with that deep blue Montana sky, nothing can quite compare. Except sittin on a beach in Hawaii.

Pam eventually gave birth to a healthy baby boy August 14, 1987.
Pam's youngest son is indeed a preacher.

Fix a nice warm cup of hot cocoa, perhaps with a dash of peppermint schnapps or a mini candy cane for a pepperminty pick-me up. Go out in the yard, cut holly and greens and drape them everywhere drapable. Put reindeer horns on the dog, mistletoe in the kitchen, a big red bow on the mailbox, and definitely a big wreath on the front of your car. Wear a Christmas tie, Santa earrings, a decorated sweater and jingle bells on your ankles.
Bustle, do more, get in the spirit. Yes, you're busy. You're busy doing wonderful and fun things, celebrate the birth of Jesus.

I'm taking the train tonight, off to Leavenworth Washington. Every year this small Bavarian town gets all decked out for Christmas. They put on a great lighting show every weekend in the month of Dec., music, sleigh rides, street fair and the whole town is ready to party. I'll be there with a couple of friends for two full days of fun. I've always heard about the Christmas celebration that takes place in Leavenworth, now I'm really on my way, Cheers!

As our world grows colder and darker during the winter months. Why not do the right thing and light at least one candle in someone's life each day. Just by the looks on their faces, you will see how it makes the darkness flee. A little bit of friendly light is all we really need.
Spread some early Christmas joy. I have heard that it only takes 14 muscles to smile and 72 muscles to frown.
So give the world a great big Christmas SMILE.

Who wants to go shopping? Not me, I'm making pottery for everyone I know. Some folks love to shop and others, well, don't like to go shopping at all. I know some of you are still afraid of shopping on the Internet. But don't be, every well known retailer has a totally safe web site to shop at. In fact, most retailers who have been selling over the Internet for more than a year are just fine to order from. So now I have no excuses either, I better get online and order me up a fine gift for my sweetheart. She sure is worth it, and the Internet makes it easy as pie.

How about a low cost Christmas gift that will be forever remembered. Today's recipe, or one like it is a great gift idea. You send all the dry recipe ingredients, along with the rest of the directions for the recipe, in a decorated canning jar. I would only do this for your local friends. Shipping a glass jar is not recommended.

Ok, Thanksgiving first, this must be my favorite of holidays. We all have much to be thankful for, if you have a friend, be thankful, if you have a roof over your head, be thankful, if you have happiness you have it all.

Do you know what a 1400 pound Yak looks like? Well they are pretty cute while they are small. We are contemplating the idea of raising a couple of Yak. I hear they are gentle giants and love cold weather. I could just see Becca out for Yak ride, guess she would be out Yakking around. Always looking for something fun and different to do.

Time to set your clocks, lucky for us, most clocks now set themselves automatically. If you still have not gotten one of the Atomic clocks, I certainly recommend it. I can still remember when it was a chore to get every clock reset.

Becca and I are busy cutting down more trees, getting ready to build a nice greenhouse next year. We plan to build the whole thing ourselves. The foundation and big roof materials will be the hard parts. Polycarbonate looks like it will make the best outer material. Perhaps a 20 X 20 foot will be about the right size. Becca had to catch me dropping the biggest trees on video. Maybe it was her insurance in case I did something foolish, like drop it on my head.

Holidays are here again. To start them out we have Veteran's Day.

Eggs, we have lots of eggs now. Our 7 new hens are keeping us well supplied in fresh eggs. Free range chicken eggs do look different from store bought ones, the color is brighter and they really do stand up in the pan. Can't tell any difference in the taste, but I'm sure they are healthier. Our diet has changed, thanks to our Vita-Mix, we're eating quite a bit of raw vegetable soup and in the morning we add kale and carrots to our fruit smoothies. Becca and I have lost over 15 pounds each. Feeling so good, we don't need vitamins anymore. If you have a favorite fruit smoothie or vegetable juice recipe, send it our way, always willing to try something new.

Here, the Tamarack trees are just about in full fall color and most of the leaf trees are too. Always a site to see when fall colors highlight the world.

Oh how we love pumpkin season. You did know this gourd-ish squash has its own season, right? Winter, Spring, Summer, Pumpkin.... We anxiously anticipate it every year.
We visited the local pumpkin patch last week and took pictures of all the little kids picking out their pumpkins. The pumpkin patch is not the same as when we were kids. Today they have train rides and corn mazes, haunted houses and fun play yards for the kids to enjoy. No more painting your pumpkin white to get a ghost pumpkin, now they grow that way.

Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.

Here is another great TV show, it's called McLeod's Daughters, made in Australia, this show takes place on a large ranch. Two sister run this big ranch and have mostly women who do all the ranch work. I think they have already made over 200 episodes. Pretty much all nice characters, working hard together these girls are having a good life. Check it out if you get a chance, this one is also on Netflix, not sure what other channels carry this inspiring show. We are always on the lookout for something wholesome to watch.

Our garden in nearly done for this year, just strawberries left to pick and enjoy till is gets too cold. Next year our garden space will double again, we plan to have lots to give away. Our chickens have started laying eggs, so far they seem easy to have around and really don't eat much. As long as we have lots of extra garden scraps and good table leftovers to feed them, they don't want to eat any of the commercial chicken feed.

Fall colors are here once again. Sure is nice to watch the sunrise colors in the morning, then fall foliage colors all day.
Cool mornings mean, time to start getting things winterized once again. Cleaning up the garden and mulching over the winter plantings. I just pulled up the garlic that was planted this spring and they are telling me to go ahead and plant again for next years garlic crop. The pumpkins have been removed from the plant and now are decorating the front deck. Becca has enjoyed her canning this year, pickles, salsa, peaches and applesauce, the house has had quite an inviting aroma lately.

Check out this new TV series called, Heartland, we love it. I think they already made two seasons or so. Made in Canada, watch it on The BBC, or watch it on Netflix like we do. On Netflix, you can watch it from the beginning, on demand. We hope they will continue making this one for a long time.
We're visiting with Becca's brother and sister in law this week, they are here from Oregon. We explored the local quilt show that is in town for this weekend. Some of those quilts are just amazing, I could not imagine making something as detailed as they do. We loved them all.

When taking the first step of faith, you don't have to see the whole staircase, just the first step.

The best part of my day was outside watering the lawn and garden. After years of planting all kinds of plants, some just don't seem to do well. Becca decided to check the garden with a soil tester to find out exactly what each soil needs. In all the samples we tested, our soil is very low in Nitrogen and our PH in perfect. Next year is going to be our best year every growing things. With the raised beds we can add just the right nutrients for each kind of plants.

Hang on to your hats, this week it's Pig Wrestling at the NW Montana Fair. If you don't laugh the first time thru, just watch it again.
I don't think I have ever seen so much fun in the mud before. Those kids jumped into that mud like they had been practicing all summer.
Needless to say, while shooting this video, Becca and I both got covered in mud. Also at the fair were the usual fun rides and all the good rodeo fun. I don't know how rodeos are in other parts of the country, but in Montana the whole town shows up to watch them.

Hummingbirds come in green and blue. This year we planted several different Hummingbird attracting flowers in the garden and didn't need as many feeders. The ones they seem to like the most was the Bee Balm. We really enjoy the looks of this flower, it grows like crazy and the flowers stay nice for a long time. Next year we plan to have several more patches of bright red and purple Bee Balm.

Montana State Fair is in full swing.
We will be there tomorrow, enjoying the pig wrestling, mutton bustin and rodeo fun. Yee-Haw!

One good way to enjoy the company of hummingbirds is to plant a hummingbird garden. If you plan carefully and select a variety of plants that flower throughout the season, you will be rewarded with happy hummers all summer..

The NW Montana State fair starts this week and the rodeos are scattered all over the valley. August, it's gonna be nice time to play in the Flathead Valley.

Counting the days till my Mother gets here from San Diego. She is 78 years and driving up to Montana with just her dog. But that alone won't get you bragging rights around here. Becca's mother drives herself here and she is 89 years old. These two young gals should get together and share the driving. Sure will be nice to see her though, it has been quite a few years since she has been able to make the trip. There are always several things happening in the valley to see, shouldn't be hard finding things to amuse us. Spent last weekend at the equestrian event, they say that this is one of the largest horse events of its kind in the world.

Becca has put together this new Equestrian video.
The Event consists of three equestrian competitions, including cross-country jumping, show jumping and dressage. Starting July 21, more than 450 riders began the competition on the 200-acre site. We had a great time for three days, taking videos and watching these magnificent animals jump to perfection.

We have wild roses, some of the bushes could be 50 years old. The flowers are smaller than the ones you buy in stores, but the blooms cover the entire bush. Some of these pink rose bushes grow between 10 and 20 feet wide. They are quite a site to see, I just love the yearly flower show they provide.
And yes, they do smell like roses.

Had visitors from Kansas this week, what a nice surprise. It's always nice when old friends come by, we enjoy showing off our beautiful Flathead valley.

Arriving home, Kenny quickly ran to his mother and excitedly told her the entire story of his rescue.

Hello friends, I hope your all doing well. Things around here are a bit hectic at times, with these short Montana summers it seems as if every weekend is chalked full of things to do. Yesterday we started our canning and freezing of this year's crops. Becca put up four batches of strawberry rhubarb jam. The zucchini is coming on strong and the salad greens are quite a delight to have in the garden. I am sure that those of you living in the south have some of these things year round. I feel truly blessed that we can find the time and energy to grow and preserve so many great tasting foods.
Next week is Equestrian time again. One of the world's largest equestrian events is just 7 miles away. It goes for 4 long days of events, cross country jumping, show jumping, dressage and evening parties. It is free to the public and they even let you bring your dog.

I don't normally like to say anything political, but why don't they just write the check.

DeerLake Weekly Letter, Spring Chickens, Should I Go or Should I Stay.

This week Becca has put together a new video about our 44 chickens. Man, do they grow up fast, it's only been 7 weeks and they are looking near full size. We plan to only keep 8 of them for fresh eggs. Perhaps keep 2 hens of each breed and one rooster for an alarm clock. The rest will go into the stew pot.
How about the looks of that fine chicken coop? Just didn't look right till we added the wagon wheel. It still needs to have the nesting boxes built for the inside, but don't think I'll need those till about December. We live out in the countryside of Montana and have to worry about predators, but so far having the chickens has been easy and fun. You can see in the video that we did put up some good fences to keep them safe.

Ideas matter. Ideas have consequences. Our free American Republic was founded on an idea – the idea of individual liberty and the personal responsibility that is part and parcel of it. Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The sanctity of contracts and private property. The freedom to try. The freedom to fail. The freedom to learn from our mistakes. The freedom to prosper and to keep the fruits of our labors. The freedom to exercise our conscience when it comes to charity and our religious beliefs. It is nothing less than the fundamental principle of self-ownership - that your life belongs to you - not the state - and that the good is to live it.

We Americans were the first in all the history of the world to claim that freedom as our inalienable right, granted to us by our Creator and this is the week that we as a country celebrate that right. I think maybe we will forgo the fireworks this year and spend a little time on the river fishing. The Flathead Valley here in Montana has some great fly fishing rivers. Not that the fireworks aren't pretty and all, I just wish they would invent some that did not have to put so much smoke into the air.

They say that socializing and having good friends is an important part of staying healthy. Becca had the girls over for a potluck lunch yesterday, 15 of them showed up and by the sounds of it they had a fun time. They can sure get going telling stories and laughing. We weren't sure if it was going to rain or shine, the weather called for blue skies but when the first car pulled up, the dark clouds appeared and the rain started falling. We had thunder and lightning with quite the downpour for the first half hour. Then the weather cleared up and we all congregated on the deck for the remainder of the party. Potluck, cake and drinks. It's good to have friends to laugh with.

Oregon...now there is a fun state to visit. The ocean, waterfalls, and awesome covered bridges. I took my mom and traveled around Oregon for 3 days. Today I put together a video of some of the highlights we saw. Lucky for us, my brother lives in Cottage Grove Oregon and showed us around . If you have not visited the coasts of Washington and Oregon, I highly recommend you give it a try. Riding the ferries in Washington state is a joy not to be missed. Check out a fantastic seafood lunch at the Rockaway Beach in Oregon. Visiting the Sea Lion Caves and just running barefoot in the sand, was simple and enjoyable, that's what life is all about.

Paradise is not a place. Paradise is a state of mind!

If paradise is a state of mind, then how do we keep paradise when we return home from vacation?
If we are doing what we love, then that moment is paradise. If we are with our friends and family who we love, then those moments are paradise. If we are in our vehicle we enjoy driving, or walking in a location where we can smell the flowers, then those moments are paradise.
Stop... breathe, then take a look around. Yep, right there is paradise in the moment!

Is your heart heavy? Get out and exercise, or do something to help you clear your head and think happier thoughts. When you start feeling a little down, pull out a sheet of paper, and started writing down all of the positive things you can think of. In this exercise, it is important to not write down anything negative - just the positives! I wrote down a whole page. By the time I was done, it had helped lift my mood and make my day a bit more enjoyable. There's a lot about life we really don't control, so we might as well just smile and laugh all we can.

DeerLake Weekly Letter A Smile

Beginning to look like a real farm around here, everyday we work on the new fencing. About 300 feet of fence put up so far and 1,500 feet to go. Sure makes my hands sore twisting all those wire ties. Chain link fence on metal T posts seems to be working out just fine. We did put in large treated wood posts for the corners. Was quite a chore to figure out how to tie the corner posts together. Every third post is 8 feet tall and has a hole drilled near the top for a wire. That top wire is there to keep the deer from jumping over. I have to think that 8 feet tall will be high enough to do the trick. Much of this year's garden is doing great, all except for the corn, it is just too cold and wet to get it started. Two plantings of corn with little success. We have always liked the idea of being more self sufficient and this year we are making a big leap in that direction.

Some people are too tired to give you a smile.
Give them one of yours,

Deerlake Weekly Letter, Disappearing, Fork and Prices

Cool, all 47 baby chickens arrived safely on Monday. Now just 7 days after hatching, they can run like the wind. I wouldn't want to see them get out, could you imagine trying to catch them. Mocka, our dog, is supposedly a herding dog, she just sits there with her nose over the pen walls and watches. What do you think she is thinking? The first plants of the garden are coming up now, only a few of the corn came up, so it looks like we will need to reseed with a second crop. I'll give it another try soon. The rest of the garden plants are doing great. We put together a small green house this year, so far it seems to be working out great for everything that would fit in there. Perhaps next year we can build a bigger and more permanent green house. Becca is about to leave again, this time she will be taking her mom on a road trip through Oregon to get photos of covered bridges and waterfalls.

Something to think about. (Please read, non political)
Whether these changes are good or bad depends in part
on how we adapt to them. But, ready or not, here they come.

Deerlake Weekly Letter Pond Skimming on Whitefish Mountain

Howdy all you fine folks out there, we been busier than a dog with flees. The new chicken coop is built and ready for 45 chickens to arrive next week. All the fence posts are in for our new one acre of pasture. After 15 years we have finally cleared the trees off of two acres now. We sure do enjoy having animals so this will be a big help. Our garden has more than doubled in size this year. We put large wooden boxes for raised beds on the new garden spot that was all covered in grass. We filled the boxes with extra good soil and plan to grow melons, squash, pumpkins and cucumbers that will grow out of the boxes and trail over the grass. You know, a place to grow those things that take up too much room in the garden!

This week we have a new video that is CRAZY FUN. So put on your happy hat and enjoy our new fun video.
