Sold-Out Batman And Robin #2 returns in new, fourth printing

BATMAN AND ROBIN continues its hot streak, with the third printing of issue #2 sold out at DC Comics. Now, this issue is set to return in a new, Fourth printing.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #2 Fourth Printing (OCT098007) will feature a recolored version of the original cover by Frank Quitely. It is scheduled to arrive in stores on December 2 and has a Final Order Cutoff date of November 12.

ALEX ROSS' BIO

After three years at the American Academy, Ross graduated and took a job at an advertising agency. Meanwhile, Marvel Comics editor Kurt Busiek had seen Alex's work and suggested the two men collaborate on a story. Those plans came to fruition in 1993 with Marvels, a graphic novel that took a realistic look at Marvel superheroes by presenting them from the point of view of an ordinary man. The book landed Ross his first serious media exposure, both within the industry and outside it. Fans appreciated that Ross had an obvious affection for the characters he painted, demonstrated by his attention to detail and the fact that he took the time to make these characters look so believable.

Ross followed up Marvels with Kingdom Come, a futuristic story for DC Comics about a minister who must intercede in a superhero Civil War. It was a visual feast, filled with surprise cameos, in-jokes and a main character based on Ross' father, allowing Ross to publicly acknowledge his family's influence.

Having established himself creatively and financially with superhero projects, Ross turned to the real world with Uncle Sam, a 96-page story that took a hard look at the dark side of American history. Like Marvels and Kingdom Come, the individual issues of Uncle Sam were collected into a single volume - first in hardcover, then in paperback - and remain in print today.

Ross' works have celebrated the 60th anniversaries of Superman, Batman, Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman with fully painted, tabloid-sized books, depicting each of these characters using their powers to inspire humanity as well as help them.

In recent years, Ross has applied his artistic skills to outside projects with comic book roots, including a limited-edition promotional poster for the 2002 Academy Awards. A number of items created especially for the Warner Bros. Studio Stores - including lithographs, collector's plates and even a canvas painting of Superman "made him the best-selling artist in the chain's history.

In the fall of 2001, Ross painted a series of four interlocking covers for TV Guide (featuring characters from the WB series Smallville) and designed and sculpted a series of busts based on characters he created for the Marvel series Earth X. "Designing the statues," Ross explains, "was a case where I said, "Hey, I know I can do this, and before somebody else does it" maybe differently from the way I would like it done - I can sculpt some of the characters for which I'm well-known and make sure they look the way I want them to look." My comics work notwithstanding, I prefer not having to rely on the labors or plans of others. For the fans' sake as well as for my own, I want to take full responsibility for the projects that bear my name."

Forty years ago, Spider-Man learned that with great power comes great responsibility. Looking at Alex Ross, it's obvious the lesson took. Ross' career offers another important message: follow your dream. Actually, it's not far from the sort of message you might find in one of his stories.

Batman battles the meat man in this issue. Batman's detective skills allow him to figure out the meat man's identity and track him to his next prey. This issue pushes the villain down the trail of serial killer as his motives and back story begin to be filled in. It's a good issue that shows off Batman at a younger stage in his career allowing him to be more vulnerable with his lack of experience. Batman shows that in order to gain ultimate success you don't always win on the first try.

Batman is still trying to connect his pieces of evidence that results in his original suspect turning up dead. Batman finds himself at square one while Nigel aka meat man begins to squeeze his employer, the man with no face. Nigel isn't buying anything he's selling him as he is virtually unimpressed with his origin story. Nigel has everything he needs now. He's got the invisibility serum and the motive to commit some serious murders: revenge.

Nigel begins his killing spree as Bruce Wayne begins to unravel the source of the meat man. Yes, Bruce Wayne does his own brand of investigating. Eventually Bruce figures out who and why the meat man came about and Batman stakes a potential victim.

Bruce and Nigel collide with unexpected results. Batman fighting an invisible man shouldn't be too much of a problem, except Batman's still green around the ears. There isn't much of a fight as Batman is over-matched simply trying to pinpoint Nigel's location while taking a hit and run pounding. It's a good ending to the comic book.

This issue shines with the artwork. The coloring and style remind me heavily of the Hellboy universe of comics, not necessarily Mignola's pencils, but the full package. Obviously Batman is drawn with jagged edges and overly extended features, but the art also takes an interesting approach with the humans as they seem to have that angry, hollow look in their eyes that you might find in a depressed Gotham City. It's a beautiful comic that definitely wanders off the usual path for a Batman book.

The story has some of the elements of a standard Batman comic. He's using his detective skills to track down the criminal which typically includes a violent showdown. However, the comic does more than tell a simple detective story. It ties in motives, origins, science and allows some insight into how a man loses his mind. You don't usually find those elements in a Batman book.

While on the surface this comic seems to be just another Batman mini series, one that probably has a target audience that likes this creative team. The comic is an enjoyable story that has its own niche with the villain and construction of the villain. It's a good story and has some terrific artwork. This is worth checking out.

John Ostrander gets a chance to play in a very familiar sandbox with this issue of the Secret Six as he pens a character he is very familiar with: Deadshot. While the character debuted in Batman in the 1950s, he’s made his bones recently in the pages of the Suicide Squad, Secret Six and various other projects. However, a case could be made that the character was never more interesting than when Ostrander was at the helm, so Ostrander takes the reins from Gail Simone for this issue and knocks it out of the park.

On the surface this comic is merely an updated origin story of Floyd Lawton aka Deadshot. In many ways, that in of itself makes for a great story. However, the comic offers a look at Deashot’s current day behavior as a pattern tied to events in his early life. As the pieces of his origin are revealed, they are cleverly reconstructed at the end of the comic to display the deeper meanings behind all of his actions. It’s a terrific story.

The setup of the issue is that Floyd seeks out Reverend Richard Craemer as he feels extremely homicidal. Floyd begins to lay out how he became who is. He walks through his strange childhood and his interactions with his parents and his first encounter with Batman. While describing the key scenes he mentions other events in passing, such as the deaths of his brother, wife and son. The comic ends with Floyd faced with a youthful punk that triggers in the Reverend’s mind how all of the events in Floyd’s life are connected.

There’s a lot to like in this comic book. The comic is violent but doesn’t rely on it. The story uses Batman as a minor supporting character instead of making Deadshot completely tied to the dark knight. This helps to keep Deadshot as his own, unique entity. The story lines up the origin, but manages to tie it to the present day, so this isn’t simply a “here’s my story” comic.

The only drawback to the issue is that because it doesn’t give the paint by numbers origin story some of the events aren’t explored enough. For example, the aspect of the deaths of his son and brother are barely touched on and yet they seem like they would have been important to final analysis of the character.

The artwork is outstanding. Deadshot isn’t in the comic book too much, but Floyd and his devilish grin certainly are. What the comic provides is great emotions and counter-emotions with the characters when they converse with each other. It has a timeless feel to it as well, where it seemed this comic could have easily been from the 1950s, 1970s or the present day.

Deadshot is an interesting character with a decently interesting origin story. However, when the story has a solid dovetail to it and uses some symbolism and subconscious actions to define the characters it’s that much better. I enjoyed the story and felt this was a terrific one shot to pick up. I definitely recommend this comic.

Okay, I saw this and couldn't wait until Monday to get in to the office and blog about it. The Great Fables Crossover has been collected in one volume and we're now taking pre-orders for Fables TPB Vol. 13!

If you've been reading Fables, you know what's up, but for those of you who are uninitiated, the title is tremendous. Bill Willingham brings us a new take on our favorite bedtime fable characters, and in this volume, he threatens to undo existence with the introduction of The Literals. It's a great jumping-on point for new readers and I really can't sing enough praises for Willingham's writing. The art is pretty stellar to boot! ;0)

This volume collects all nine issues of the Great Fables Crossover story arc: Fables #83-85, Jack of Fables #33-35 and the three-issue Literals miniseries. It's worth it, even at the cover price, but as with all pre-orders at TFAW.com, you'll save 20% off the cover price–just $14.39.
