PROJECT 03 Curator Brief
Deadline: 24 May, 2013, 5pm

Introduction/aims

The Contemporary Art Society is seeking to appoint an early – career independent curator to produce an exhibition in the Contemporary Art Society ’s office space at 59 Central Street, London.

The Contemporary Art Society hosts a quarterly programme of exhibitions as part of our PROJECTS series, which showcases emerging artists drawn from our Artist Membership as well as selected guest artists. The exhibitions are curated by collectors, curators and other practitioners from the organisation’s wider networks. Designed to act as a platform for new artistic and curatorial talent and to bring the diverse strands of our networks together in the presentation of dynamic and playful interventions, PROJECTS aims to complement the work of the Contemporary Art Society to bring the work of new, critically engaged artists to a wider audience.

This is an excellent opportunity for an independent curator at the beginning of their career to put together a smaller – scale exhibition for our characterful offices. The curator should have no more than 5 years of experience in the field.

About the Contemporary Art Society

Encouraging an appreciation and understanding of contemporary art by a wide audience and donating works by important and new artists to museums and public galleries across the UK.

The Contemporary Art Society is a national charity that encourages an appreciation and understanding of contemporary art in the UK. With the help of our members and supporters we raise funds to purchase works by new artists which we give to museums and public galleries where they are enjoyed by a national audience; we broker significant and rare works of art by important artists of the twentieth century for public collections through our networks of patrons and private collectors; we establish relationships to commission artworks and promote contemporary art in public spaces; and we devise programmes of displays, artist talks and educational events. Since 1910 we have donated over 8,000 works to museums and public galleries – from Bacon, Freud, Hepworth and Moore in their day through to the influential artists of our own times – championing new talent, supporting curators, and encouraging philanthropy and collecting in the UK.

Curator’s Responsibilities

The successful curator will be expected to deliver three key components:

The curator should be responsible for transport of works to and from the Contemporary Art Society and installation and de – installation of the exhibition.
A short text about the exhibition and list of works.
An event to take place on the night of the opening. For example, an artist talk, an ‘in – conversation’, a performance or screening, as appropriate. This event can be developed with the Contemporary Art Society and will be marketed through our networks.

Contemporary Art Society’s Responsibilities.

Promotion and marketing of the exhibition and opening event through our networks
Exhibition and event profile on our website
Staffing at opening and invigilation of exhibition throughout
The Contemporary Art Society will have final sign off on the exhibition proposal
Start date: September 3, 2013
VVAA Nida Art Colony, Call for residency
Deadline for all the applications: June 15, 2013

Together with the spring the main annual NAC event INTER-FORMAT SYMPOSIUM: On Critical Tourism, Site-specificity and Post-romantic Condition is approaching (May 16-19 2013, Nida). It is hosting together more than 40 art professionals (artists, curators, researchers) and is a part of the project On Hosting and Displacing co-organised by Nida Art Colony (LT) and Ecole Cantonale d’Art du Valais (Sierre, CH) and partly supported by Pro Helvetia – Swiss Arts Council. More about the program me here.

Nida Art Colony (NAC) welcomes proposals from artists, designers, architects, curators, and art researchers for its upcoming residencies on the Baltic Sea coast in the Curonian Spit National Park, Lithuania.

Location and Facilities
NAC is located in a remote and beautifully distinct landscape next to the resort town of Nida. The residency is most appropriate for those artists who are seeking time for experiments and research, value the creative process and a big studio or open-air space as well as for those who love coincidences and the chance to meet artists from all over the world. Parallel to the residency programme, the Colony building also hosts student workshops and international art projects for shorter periods of time.

The Colony provides the necessary living and social conditions to ensure a comfortable environment for the five artists-in-residence. Each of the five residencies is set out on two floors with 65 square meters of floor space and features all the necessary facilities. The colony is situated about 600 meters away from the sand dunes, and the beach. More information on activities and facilities can be found on our website and Facebook. To get a sense of Colony life and to see A.I.R. portfolios, please check the Nida Art Colony Log.

Two types of residencies are available: individual and thematic residencies. Please indicate the selected type of residency in the subject line and follow the application guidelines.

Individual Residencies:
Duration: one to four months, between January and May 2014. The recommended duration of a residency is 2 months.
Applicants from all over the world may apply.
Grants: No grants are currently available; selected candidates are issued a letter of support for individual grant-seeking.
Costs: Studio and living space rent is 312 EUR/month, including all taxes, use of equipment, communal spaces and bicycles.

Call for curatorial proposals for thematic residencies in 2014 and 2015

NAC is expanding its practice of curated/thematic residencies and looks for curators who would like to run such a residency project at NAC. Nida artist-in-residence programme aims to foster critical thinking, creativity, innovative ideas and processes, exchange and cooperation of artists. Open-ended process is more important to NAC than the final product, but “soft” results (like artistic research, visible learning/knowledge or new set of mind) are expected. Public presentation of created works is one of the possible results of the project. More info on Nida artist-in-residence programme is available here.

• Timeframe: anytime between February 2014 – December 2015
• Duration of the residency: 1-2 months
• Number of participants: 5-8
• Selection of artists: by invitation or open call

Funding: NAC will fundraise for selected projects from national and international sources. The curator is expected to contribute to the fundraising process.

How to apply: send your proposal with a description of the residency project and preliminary working programme (up to 2 pages) and your CV to info@nidacolony.lt. Experience in running an artist-in-residence programme or being part of such a programme is an asset.

Call for a Trainee
We are looking for interns to work as a) assistant curators, which includes coordination of artist-in-residency and other culture & education programmes and b) visual communication assistants (photo & video documentation and working with our archive). We offer a unique experience and reference letters for your future career, as well as free accommodation at the Colony between January and May 2014. You should stay for four to five months. Please send your CV and a short motivation letter to info@nidacolony.lt. For more information, please visit internships page.
Director, Salzburger Kunstverein
Deadline: 15 May, 2013

The Salzburger Kunstverein is looking for a new director as of January 1, 2014

The Salzburger Kunstverein is a space in which to analyse art, art theory, and cultural policy in Salzburg. The Kunstverein offers the opportunity to meet artists and encounter current trends in contemporary visual art. Our program focuses on the lively discourse between artists in all areas and with the public. The Künstlerhaus building, owned by the Salzburger Kunstverein, houses three different exhibition areas and 21 ateliers for artists and art initiatives. The task of the Salzburger Kunstverein was to promote and sell contemporary fine art from the territories of the monarchy and neighbouring foreign countries. Like all art associations the Salzburger Kunstverein was therefore a forerunner model of the private galleries. Initially the pictures were distributed similar to prizes in a raffle in order to spare the middle class the need to decide which works of art to select.

Responsibilities:

• Design and execute exhibitions and events
• Publish catalogues and other publications
• Manage the Salzburger Kunstverein and the Künstlerhaus (including the artists and art initiatives’ studios)
• Fundraising

Requirements:

• Degree in art history or equivalent qualifications
• Curatorial experience
• Excellent knowledge of contemporary art
• Management experience
• Leadership skills and ability to work in a team
• Residence in Salzburg
• Excellent organization and communication skills

We offer a five year contract with the possibility for renewal

Your written application should include a CV, a list of published works, a photo, copies of certificates, references, and your vision of how you would design the program (maximum of about two A4 pages) and shall be sent by May 15, 2013, at the latest to:
The Foundation for a Civil Society: YVAA – Vilcek Curatorial Fellowship Open Call
Deadline: 30 April, 2013

The Foundation for a Civil Society is pleased to announce the Young Visual Artists Awards: Marica Vilcek Fellowship.

Fellowships will be awarded to two US-based curators, critics and art historians with demonstrated experience and excellence in engaging with international contemporary art. The fellowship is composed of two main features: First, fellows will be provided with an opportunity to travel to one or more of the YVAA countries in Central and South-East Europe to serve as guest jury members for the national awards, as well as conduct short-term independent research, curatorial projects and develop professional networks. Second, fellows will serve as guest critics for the 10 YVAA artists in residence at International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) from September 2013 to May 2014, should they reside in NY. Fellows may be asked to write and publish features on the resident artists for the YVAA blog and other outlets. Furthermore, fellows may be invited to a six-week curatorial residency at ISCP between December 2013 and January 2014. The fellowship will cover economy air travel to and ground transportation within the YVAA countries (up to $1700), accommodation and per diems (up to $600), and honoraria ($500). A panel of professionals who live in, or have extensive knowledge of the region, will select the successful applicant. The YVAA juries convene in June and October and short-listed candidates will be contacted by YVAA Program Director for an informal conversation to establish eligibility and availability.

The Young Visual Artists Awards is an international network of awards and a New York residency program in Central and South East Europe. First established with President Havel and a group of artists in Czechoslovakia in 1990, this highly successful program has grown to 10 countries and has to date awarded and presented in the US 111 artists.

The YVAA awards and their local organizers are: ARDHJE AWARD – TICA , Tirana, Albania; ZVONO AWARD – Sarajevo Center for Contemporary Arts, Bosnia and Herzegovina; BAZA AWARD – Institute of Contemporary Art – Sofia, Bulgaria; RADOSLAV PUTAR AWARD – Institute for Contemporary Art, SCCA, Zagreb, Croatia; JINDRICH CHALUPECKY AWARD – Jindrich Chalupecky Society, Prague, Czech Republic; ARTIST OF TOMORROW AWARD – Kosova Art Gallery, Prishtina, Kosovo; DENES AWARD – Contemporary Art Center, Skopje, Macedonia; DIMITRIJE BASICEVIC MANGELOS AWARD – Remont Gallery, Belgrade, Serbia; OSKAR CEPAN AWARD – Foundation/Center for Contemporary Arts, Bratislava, Slovakia; OHO AWARD – P74 Center and Gallery, Ljubljana Slovenia.

This fellowship is made possible by the generous gift of Marica Vilcek – an art historian and co-founder of the Vilcek Foundation.

Please submit the following with your application:
1. One page cover letter stating the applicant’s interest in the fellowship and particularly in the artistic scenes of the YVAA countries. Please note how the applicant is qualified to recognize artistic excellence? And how the applicant’s practice will benefit from and incorporate YVAA artists. 3. Two writing samples

Requirements:
