Is Finding Love on the Road Possible?

I had been living in the Czech Republic for six months when my friend and I decided to head to California for Coachella. Flights were pretty expensive from the Czech Republic to America and it didn’t cost that much more to fly around the world, so I decided to head home for a bit to visit family and friends. My flatmates had got a new flatmate named Ben but I didn’t think much of it. 

After meeting Ben I knew instantly that he was someone I wanted to get to know more. I had just never imagined that I would be finding love in my home city! I was only supposed to spend a week in Christchurch but my trip kept being extended, eventually to a month. The fairytale quickly ended as I had commitments in Spain that meant I had to leave.

So many questions floated around my mind: would I come back? I had no intention to live in Christchurch, but I had never met someone quite like this before. That’s the tricky thing about finding love on the road – you never know if or when it will happen.

As I boarded my flight to Sydney, I sat in my seat and tried to decide whether I had made the right decision. Travel was such a big part of my life and I didn’t want someone else to get in the way of that. The flipside was that I had never met someone who made me feel like that and surely that was special.

My time in Spain was spent well; a number of short holidays around Spain, learning Spanish with some other au pairs, travelling to Morocco and far Eastern Europe. Eventually it was time to come home, but Ben and I had sort of fallen out of touch. I was insistent I wanted to keep travelling and so he had decided to move on.

I came home heartbroken only comforted by the fact that I had decided to follow my own dream. From that point on I swore if I ever found a connection like that again, I would take it much more seriously. I headed to Asia for a few months of travel over New Years.

A few weeks after New Years, Ben and I started talking again. It was obvious we both still cared for each other. When I returned home we made some time to see each other and fell back into that special place we had first discovered.

Long term travel is great, but nothing compares finding love.

Trying to deal with a long distance relationship is hard, tiring and testing. It’s especially challenging if you haven’t known each other that long. I think sometimes when you meet people you just know that they will be a special part of your life.

I think that everyone who travels long term is looking for something – someone or some place that is captivating enough to make them stay, or at least slow down.

Let’s admit it, men and women are both visual creatures. We tend to lean to something that is pleasing to the eyes. So, make sure to have an excellent head shot with a decent camera. It should provide a good angle of your face and your lovely smile.

Most online dating sites provide the option to upload more than one photo. If it does, choose another photo that discreetly shows a full body shot, preferably in an outdoor setting. This erases the idea that you were trying to hide an anorexic body or beer belly.

This part of your profile should catch a reader’s attention in fifty characters or less. So, infuse it with humor and positivity. Avoid the generic ones and be unique.

I’ve read a thousand headlines and we’re all sick of ‘Ready For Miss Perfect’ or ‘Cool Girl Seeking Cool Guy’. I especially like this quirky one I found on Match.com: ‘Guaranteed More Fun Than Your Ex’.

3. Screen Name

Don’t be just another ‘SexyGirl56′ or ‘FunnyMan9′. Screen names should be catchy and say something about yourself that is concise and easy to remember. It usually gives out the first impression in fifteen characters or less.

You want a user to know that you are confident and fun in a way that you don’t blatantly tell it in your screen name. Do not use full names or email addresses for anonymity. Birthdays and house addresses are a definite no-no.

If you would like to attract those who are looking for serious, long-term relationships, then racy titles would only introduce you to the wrong ones.

My advise is to include hobbies like ‘GolfGuruGeorge’ or if you like scuba diving then ‘DivingDivaJane’. I especially like interesting names such as ‘VincentVegaTheThird’. Movie addicts will understand that you are referring to John Travolta’s character in Pulp Fiction, but if not, it is always a good conversation starter.

4. Describing Yourself

Keep this part short enough to efficiently describe yourself but just long enough to pique a reader’s interests and make them think, ‘I want to know more about this lady/gentleman.’

Like all things in your online dating profile, it should exude positivity. Avoid negative words such as ‘desperate’ or ‘lonely’. Include a line of what your friends say about you. A hobby or two should help as well.

5. Your Potential Match

I like reading stuff such as ‘You will not be asked to get me a beer while I watch TV,’ or ‘You won’t be holding my purse while I’m shopping for shoes’. I like how it focuses on the other person.

Your whole profile already talks about you, so might as well consider this part a space for your potential partner. And just because you put in ‘funny and spontaneous’ on your profile, doesn’t mean you can expect the same from a potential match.

The trick is to consider your audience. It’s all romance and flowers for women but men are more logic and reason.

6. Draft and Editing Your Online Dating Profile

Do not upload it directly on your profile. Make a draft on a Word document instead.

Write down according to how the ideas come out of your mind. Never mind the grammar and spelling errors.

1. Always Start from the Basics – instead of starting with lengthy meditations and profound self-identity questions, you should make it a point to start with the simple basics. Some good examples may include retiring to bed during the decent hours and not letting yourself get starved. Science has evidences regarding these things and they have great impacts on becoming happy in life.

2. Keep Minor Anger on Your Own – Most of the time, I always find myself shouting and expressing my anger whenever. However, scientific studies show that this method won’t help. Fleeting annoyances and minor anger that are loudly expressed only amplifies your bad feelings while keeping them on your own will allow them to dissipate in time.

3. Act the Opposite Way – this is a way of faking yourself on the things that you really feel. Say, when you feel lonely, you need to counter it by looking cheery and the result is I, myself feeling a lot much happier. When I’m angry at someone, I would give him or her something thoughtful and the result is me feeling softer to that person whom I’m angry at. This technique to be happy in life is very much effective, indeed.

4. Learn to Enjoy Failure – many people would become very happy when they experience new things like going to new places, and buying new things for themselves. However, if you have no means to get these things, the best way to learn to be happy in life is to enjoy the fun of having failures. This will help you tackle and handle most of life’s daunting goals.

5. Realize the Things that Mean “Treats” for You – things that don’t satisfy you quite well have effects that are short-lived. To get the best treats out of the things in this life, make sure you get what you and your feelings really want, thus making you feel much better along the way.

6. Buy Yourself Some Happiness – we as persons have psychological needs. We like to love and be loved. Money is not an exemption and can instantly fill the emptiness we feel. By spending money the right way, you can make yourself happy and stay closer with family and friends.  For an instance, when my brother got married, I bought a high-tech digital camera. It was very expensive but it made fell feel so happy and contented.

7. Do not Insist Getting the Best Things at all Times – there are times that we cannot afford to always get the best. Learn to be contented. If you can’t get the best, you can at least choose the better one.

8. Exercise Religiously – exercise is known to be one of the most effective mood-boosters. Spend at least ten to fifteen minutes of walk in the outdoors and you can be happy in life, you’ll see.

9. Stop that Nagging – you can do this effectively by saying only one word or do wordless hints. Say, “coffee please” instead of adding more words with it. Or you can do the task yourself to minimize nagging.

10. Reflect – a person’s level of happiness is forty percent within his control. Spend some time to reflect and make conscious steps to be happy in life.

Let’s face it – these days, you’re not going to find even a remotely-tolerable person on one first date, unless you’re extremely lucky or extremely flexible. And the thought of reusing situations – dinners, movies, walks in the park – can get a little monotonous after the third time around.

“What if you have plenty of first date, and not enough ideas to go around?”

So just in case you find yourself in need of something new to do with someone new, here is a list of five things I reckon would be pretty enjoyable… even if your first date isn’t.

1. Breakfast

It’s bad enough that we often overlook the first meal of the day. And waking up in the wee hours is utter horror, especially if you’re not a morning person. What better to motivate you to be up bright and early than the prospects of a good first date? All it takes is one person you’re extremely interested in and you’ll be up and about in seconds.

Furthermore, I find breakfast a much better alternative than dinner and drinks. Dinners are usually expensive on account of high expectations, and it doesn’t take much to consider the disastrous possibilities that could come with copious amounts of alcohol. French toast and coffee in a quaint cafe could do just as much in terms of a meal (even more, really – it IS the most important meal of the day), and you won’t have to worry about how you’re planning on driving back home afterwards.

Besides, if the first date is not looking good, forget chugging down drinks to make it to the end of the date… Just politely excuse yourself by saying you have work/an appointment/a class to get to and you’ll be on your merry way. If it works out well, make plans for dinner or spend the rest of the day together if you have nothing planned!

2. Sports

Everyone’s on some sort of health kick these days. Whether it be fad diets, soy milk, rock-climbing, or taking the stairs, we’re all staring possible obesity down. Spread the joys of being healthy by scheduling a couple of hours of an activity in place of a predictable activity. Instead of munching plain through a bucket of popcorn while you sit through a movie you’ve already got in a DVD copy, round up your racquets and head to the courts for a couple of rounds of badminton or tennis.

If you don’t feel like working up a sweat, go bowling instead. And if you’re feeling imaginative, go for a swim and start a game of water polo, head to your local rock-climbing gym, or round up your mates and play a game of Futsal. That last suggestion is worth the effort if you want your friends’ opinions, or if you’re nervous about being alone. Furthermore, I particularly believe that being active in games and activities reveal the truth about yourself, and if you’re not up for creating a perfect facade or are health-conscious, these will do you good in terms of romance. Whoever said being sweaty couldn’t be sexy especially in your first date?

3. Themes

These go a long way. Look around for themed restaurants – candlelit dinners are passe, and if you’re stumped for good conversation, these will help you out a lot. Albeit on the pricey side, it’s a good opportunity to discover and enjoy local entertainment whilst ensuring that you have a good time, regardless of your company.

Here in Melbourne, I know of a couple of cabaret-inspired restaurants, but where you come from, I’m sure you’ll come across a couple. If you haven’t heard of any, surf the Internet – you never know what you may find. Alternatively, you could look for comedy clubs or venues that cater to local bands and gigs (and I don’t mean hotel lobby lounges). These places usually charge cover, and some don’t offer dinners, but make do and you’ll find that the possibilities are endless.

If that’s not your cup of tea, try suggesting themed outfits. While unorthodox, you’re sure to find common interests that will urge continuous talking. Do note that if you attempt this, go all out on your first date. In light of recent events, try a Michael-Jackson inspired outfit, and see where that takes you. Forget fancy restaurants – head to places that are more relaxed in terms of attire… say, a Mexican restaurant?

4. No-joke Broke

With the recession, most of us are pretty hard-up for money. A friend of mine told me of a date she recently had where she spent next to nothing, but had a great time nonetheless. If you’re strapped for cash but want to do more than rent a movie from your nearest Video Ezy, try a picnic basket for lunch on your first date. 

Especially handy for those who can’t cook, all you have to do is wrap up a couple of sandwiches and head for the park. If you’re amazing in the kitchen, all the better to show off some of your skills. A way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, and if you’re a guy who’s sweet enough to prepare lunch for the lady then you’re halfway there, mate! It’s also a good time to get back to nature, and enjoy fresh air and good sights as opposed to being cooped up in a dark movie theater.

If the park isn’t your cup of tea, then look online for gallery openings or art shows in your area. Even if you’re not an art connoisseur, it’s never too late to learn a thing or two about good (or bad!) art.

Best of all, these new places usually serve complimentary drinks and finger foods, and if you’re not the sort to get embarrassed easily, hit it like it’s a buffet. It certainly beats spending a bomb on a single cocktail. If there’s nothing new in town, head to a museum or gallery and rediscover things about your culture.

5. Skills

These days, you can never know too much. If you’ve always wanted to take up pottery, learn to knit, or go wine-tasting then NOW would be the time to do it! If your first date is open-minded enough, then there hundreds upon hundreds of courses to take on, and you may as well do something productive with your time.

While it may be a little costly, the experience will be worth every penny. A friend of mine attended a course on insects, and she wound up tasting dishes that were made of bugs – talk about stepping out of one’s comfort zone! She says it was good fun, and depending on how open-minded you are, it’s sure to be!

In fact, just a few days ago I attended a course on coffee-making with my boyfriend, and while the sole intent of that was to find work here in Melbourne, it turned out to be quite a lot of fun! These don’t have to be confined to the indoors – you might find an archery class intriguing, or just want to attend a seminar at a university nearby… if you’re susceptible to suggestion, and broaden the mind a little, you’ll learn a lot more – of both the activity, and your date! It’s important to keep in mind that you shouldn’t be a prude.

With all this in mind, it should give you a good idea to start with for your first date. Customize to your own preferences, and you’re on your way to a good day!

If you are feeling uncomfortable about it, do talk about it and seek for solutions together with your partner. Or else, you have to continue dating to understand him/her and his/her lifestyle better, thus to accept it with your open heart before making any big ‘lifetime’ decisions.

3. Have you cleared your doubts or any questions that are on your mind?
Is there something that holds you back, makes you wonder if you have made the best choice to live your life with this person for the rest of your life? Do not misunderstand your feelings and doubts. Getting nervous just because you are getting married the next day is perfectly normal. But if there is this thought that makes you unsure about your future in regards to financial stability, security, attitude, lifestyle, especially commitment, you should give this a serious thought again. You might not be ready for a marriage if you are unsure about your future being committed to him/her for life. Clear those doubts, and get yourself the reassurance before you walk down the aisle.

Don’t get me wrong! I’m not saying I’m regretting the decision I made three years ago. But this re-thinking process justified this lifetime decision and commitment I made to him… and myself.

So, here you go…

1. Why did I get married?

Tiffany
Money
Fame
Status
Security

Mind you, it is NONE OF THE ABOVE.

At that tender age, three years ago… all I wanted was to spend the rest of my life with him. It’s simply and purely because of…

LOVE!

As written in the previous post, marriage is a lifelong commitment. Yes, it’s true. Because till today (as I’m writing this piece), I still cannot live without him and I want to spend the rest of my life loving this one man.

2. Why did I agree to the proposal?

Our proposal was a mutual one. We kinda agreed to get married, but he surprised me with a proposal ring down the escalator, saying:

Will you marry me and walk down the roads of life together, like this escalator?

My first reaction was, of course…

YES!

Then it sank in, and I asked about the ‘escalator’ roads. It’s a metaphor of a lifetime journey of ups and downs - the two sides of the escalator that go round and round, up and down. Until and unless the operator pushes the stop button… so it just means that “till death do us part”.

I mean, the understanding came later, but with the idea and the thought that was put into it, (awww) who wouldn’t love this man?

So… I fell in love with him all over again.

3. What makes him Mr Right?

He is the kind of man who put family first. By saying family, me included (though we were just dating at that time). He was and is always there to defend me. In a way, he was like a ‘daddy’ to me. And I saw and knew that I wanted this kinda ‘daddy’ for my children in the future.

Quoting from the previous post, Cupid Blogger mentioned that “Do not be pressured by those around you, telling you that your time’s up, you need to get married NOW!”

I was pressured the other way round. Many people asked:

You’re still young. Why not wait a little longer?

Are you sure about this… like NOW?

Do you think it’s the right time?

Why in such haste?

Are you pregnant?

But I knew in my heart, mind and soul that my decision was RIGHT.

This is a ‘photograph’ of us – designed specially to represent us.

Sometimes, we know it in our hearts.

Sometimes, we just have to trust our gut feeling.

Sometimes, you just can’t explain the course of action.

In any way and in all the ways, I thank God for bringing love into my life.

1. Are you looking forward to a marriage or just a wedding?

You have been attending many weddings. You may have witnessed your relatives’ and friends’ marriage which you may have secretly dreaming about walking down the aisles and hearing the wedding bells. Now that you have got a proposal from your partner recently and you are so happy about it. But let me ask you this:

What are you looking for?

Are you looking for a perfect wedding alone or are you looking further into a happily-ever-after marriage life as a family too?

Think again. A perfect wedding is just a day but it is marriage that will convert a big piece of your life to a lifelong commitment. You got so obsessed with great plans for your bridesmaids, bridal gown, photo shoots and cake but have you planned for your future? Have you planned for your future properties? Have you planned for your children? Have you planned for both your family and your partner’s? Think again. If you have thought of those, it will be great! You are now on your way to the next level in your relationship.

2. Are you ready to be a Husband/Wife?

You have been watching your parents are showing love and care incessantly, even after all the years of ups and downs. You have seen your mom and dad taking care of the family with responsibilities and commitment. What you have been witnessing all these while are nothing else but a lifelong commitment and indescribable showers of love. You never see them giving up neither do you hear them complaining about the hardships they have gone through to survive. It is much more than a wedding and sealing the husband/wife status, mind you! It is about how much you have prepared towards a lifelong commitment and responsibilities. So are you ready?

3. How much do you know about your partner’s pasts? Or to be precise, how much do you know about your partner?

Sad to say that it is undeniable that the past behavior in a relationship may somewhat contribute in our future behavior. Are there any signs of abusive behavior? Or are there any signs of infidelity, betrayals or affairs? All these must be taken into account as it might happen (again) in the future, but well, it’s not a 100% thing. What I mean here is just taking a step of precaution from heart ache and heart break. There are either partners who have bad pasts but they are willing to change for a better future ahead with someone whom they truly love. All these are hidden possibilities, you see. I’m not here to condemn all who had encountered bad or tragic pasts. It’s a matter of how much they are willing to change for their loved ones, for a brighter path in the relationship in the near future.

Is that so? Or you are expecting something more? Please bear this in mind that marriage is never a solution to avoid or escape from anything, and it is definitely not a game that you can take it likely, hoping there is something called ‘Game Over’ if you don’t like playing anymore. Marriage wasn’t meant to be that way and that we MUST never fool around with marriage. Find out the real reasons behind your engagement and be true to yourself if you are ready for a lifelong commitment.

2. Why did you agree to the proposal?

The word ‘yes’ is not a mere yes to agreeing a marriage. It is a ‘yes’ to a lifelong commitment. If you are agreeing to a proposal just because you don’t want to let your partner down, think again. But if you are saying ‘yes’ because you have been expecting it after a deep consideration of your future before the proposal and you know that you are really in love with your partner, wanting to live your life together, you are making a right decision.

3. What makes you think this person is Mr. or Ms. Right?

“Funny question huh? Obviously it’s because I’m crazily in love!” Now don’t get me wrong. There are quite a number of couples who were so deeply in love ended up in a broken marriage. They too thought they were meant for each other when they walked down the aisle. The key here is to know why you accept him/her to be your husband/wife but not others. There must be something that you can see in him/her, the trust, the faith and so much more inexplicable feelings for this person. It’s your instinct that tells you that you are doing the right thing at times. Do not be pressured by those around you, telling you that your time’s up, you need to get married NOW, or that you’ll live to be an old bachelor or spinster. It’s you to make the decision in your life. You take charge of it.

It is not easy to find true love and when couples are in a relationship, they know that they have one more phase to go through: marriage. However, marriage is an important phase in one’s life and it is not a mere act of marrying for the sake of marrying (or fulfilling an obligation even). It is so much more than that. It is about commitment, faith, trust, love, passion, unity, bond, responsibility and the list goes on. It is, especially, about spending the rest of your life with the person you love.

Girls would normally drop hints of marriage here and there, while guys would normaly cook up something romantic like popping the proposal question on birthdays or memorable dates. During the moment of proposing for being proposed to, both might experience different feelings and emotions.

When being proposed to, some girls might feel excited and answered with an overjoyed “YES!” in happy tears.

Some might feel shocked, awkward and reject the proposal right away.

While keeping and building more suspense, might just ask for some time to think about it (there’s hesitation, so guys, you might want to think again if she’s the one).

Now, why is it such a tough decision for some couples? It is common to get married and settle down; have a family of our own and nurture our little ones, bringing up future generations that would lead this world, if they would. That’s all we want in the end anyway.
