Thanks so much for all the feedback. I used maya and a series of custom shaders setups I've been working with of as well as some PS tricks. Then I drew over everything that felt too stiff to breath some life back in. I agree with Jake about letting it act as a guide more. I'll be trying more tests in the future I'm sure...but now I have to go find a piece of paper and a pencil to appease the gods! HA!

hey paul-
I agree about the connection with the dog. I did that pose because when my dog got in a car, he acted ready to go even when it wasn't moving, so I thought it'd be funny here. But it's a subtle thing to try to get across.

Pure genius. I love it. Your work is so polished i would never have picked the use of 3d at all (still can't).
Not a huge fan of the dog looking off into the distance while the driver looks towards the camera. Makes them feel disconnected in the scene. Would have been nice if they where both sharing the same view/experience.

Love your werk.

I think you nailed it. It's a great 3-d model and it fits well with your characters. My only crit would be to use the model as a guide drawing over it, adding a little more weight and character to it. 3-d models can start to look rigid and unforgiving when paired with drawings. But you pulled this off nicely.

I think in a time crunch there is nothing wrong with using 3d models. But I gotta ask, did you actually use the model in the drawing or did you just look at it for reference? Because usually when people use 3 models and then draw stuff on top it looks jarring...but this drawing is seamless!

what 3d program do you use?
