Greg and I are still cranking away on the Ratchet and Clank covers – which puts us in a comic state of mind – which makes us miss the San Diego Comic-Con even more! We’re having a great time with the images and the creative team putting together the interiors are doing a wonderful job. I’ve never seen time go by this fast…it seems between blinks (or random bouts of unconsciousness) entire weeks are trotting by. Greg and I have been buried in all sorts of things but we talk about the site every day. We’re working hard to get back on our posting schedule as we limp through a few more commitments.

We wanted to send out a huge thanks to everyone who has picked up the sketchbook over the last several weeks. The support is greatly appreciated and we’re blown away to see so many of you returning from last year, and the year before. We’ve started to brainstorm a few ideas for the next book, but more on that in the coming year.

For those going to Comic-Con, we’re jealous! Unfortunately we won’t be able to make it to the show this year which is a huge bummer for us. If you’re looking for the best assortment of international graphic novels and sketchbooks, be sure to stop by our pal Stuart Ng at booth 5012. Francisco Herrera asked us to do some pin ups for him of his lady Bubble Pink and her little rodent friend. Francisco’s one of those artists who when you see his work for the first time…you calmly place your pencil on your desk…ease yourself out of your chair…walk to the nearest wall and slam your head against it in a fit of defeat. So hell yes I wanted to do the pin ups!

After a long couple of weeks of tough deadlines and late late nights, it was a ton of fun to get to draw something just nutty for no reason. So this is my take on the creepily grimaced bombshell Herrera calls “Bubble Pink” and her little horny rat?!?!

Recently Greg and I had the pleasure of working with the great folks at Wildstorm, creating the covers for an upcoming Ratchet and Clank comic series. The franchise has been a pretty big part of our lives over the last decade so we jumped at the chance to help bring the characters over to comics. Heroes Con has come to an end and we’ve made it back to our humble abodes. Thanks to everyone who stopped by – we had a blast talking shop and catching up with old (and new) friends. We certainly have plans to sneak into next year’s show so if you’re in the area, you owe it to yourself to soak up a great convention centered around some amazing comic art.

In other news, the shop is now live with Thoughts, Scribbles, + Madness: Vol. 3! We’ve also added our first foray into prints: a groovy Palindrone poster collecting 25 designs. You can never have enough robots in your life.

Finally, if you happen to have an attic studio and the air conditioning goes out just before you head off to a comic convention, you just might return to 95 degrees of blog posting bliss…indoors. Just sayin’.

It was so nice to get back to the table and just draw again! It has been one heck of a few months for Dave and I trying to get the “more than we can chew” part of our workload wrapped up. But we just got the books back from the printers and they look great! Once the DVD gets back from the presses, we can get these things out the door.

Big news for us is we have a booth at Heroes Con this year in Charlotte on June 4th-6th. The show is brimming with amazing artists, so we’ll certainly be getting our geek on. But if you’re in the neighborhood, or not even close, swing by, we’d love to meet up and give you that firm handshake you all deserve for all the support you’ve given us over the years.

And speaking of the years, one of the first images I ever made for the site was a piece of the hero of heroes; Optimus Prime. I have been aching to do another one pretty much since I put the pen down on that one and so, 3 years later I present the bad-mamba-jamba himself donning some new samurai armor. Glad to be back!

We think for the most part, when we set out to do something, we’re a pretty well oiled machine. We are wrong. “Hey let’s do a contest,” we said. “Let’s forget to get everyone’s emails included with the submissions so its easy to get in touch with the winners!” We obviously didn’t think it all the way through. So, after digging and cross referencing all known data about the the three finalists, we have successfully sent out the prizes to the enigmatic, but deserving winners. Thank you very much for your patience with us.

Comix Academy deadline approaching! Full tuition Portfolio Competition ends May 1. If you’re looking for a great workshop around Comic-Con time, give it a look!

Are you headed to Comic Con this year? Looking for a little guidance with your comic portfolio before hitting up editors on the show floor? Well you just might be in luck! Some close friends of ours have united to provide an awesome workshop taking place the week before the big show in July. Mentors include Mike Mignola, Scott Hampton, Dave Dorman, John Van Fleet, Chris Moeller, and Durwin Talon – that’s one heck of a lineup folks!

From Durwin Talon:

Comix Academy is a series of workshops designed to make the comic book illustrator and storyteller stronger and more informed. In this inaugural year, we have assembled some amazing talent to help students with one-on-one mentoring, demos, and presentations. The entire experience will be pretty intense, as students will finish work in time for an Editors Day held at the end of the workshop. There is a scholarship competition to help students with financial need with a full tuition scholarship to be announced May 1. The workshop happens the week before San Diego Comic Con, so students can then show off their work at the con!

I’ve always heard life is about the journey, not the destination. It can be tough to follow that advice sometimes but I’ve really tried to slow down a bit and listen to the tree frogs barking out in the woods. I knew I wanted to play on the environment side of the fence with this post so I decided to start a set reflecting one bot’s journey….somewhere. I don’t have a clue where he’s headed but I figure we can tag along and check out some bizarre places along the way.
