Great post. Especially love the stuff on cubism and simplicity/complexity. It reminds me also of the Eastern philosophical concept of "Interbeing"--the interconnectedness of all things. Our insight is there in us, waiting to emerge in a flash, and anything at all can trigger it, bringing forth inspiration. When we improvise, we follow the insight, bringing along our imagination and our courage.
Thanks again for the post!

This clarification about brainstorming -- what it is, and how to make it work -- should be published as an answer to the Newsweek article denying that brainstorming is useful. It explains why this exercise is constructive
but also how it can be successful. It goes beyond your blog.

As we write in our latest book - Innovate the Pixar Way - Improv is one of the best techniques in play at Pixar and one that other companies should adopt. Wikipedia defines improvisation as "the practice of acting and reacting, or making and creating, in the moment and in response to the stimulus of one's immediate environment. This can result in the invention of new thought patterns, new practices, new structures or symbols, and/or new ways to act." Pixar's Randy Nelson explained, "If you don't create an atmosphere in which risk can be easily taken, in which weird ideas can be floated, then it's likely you're going to be producing work that will look derivative in the marketplace. Those kind of irrational what-ifs eventually lead to something that makes you go, 'Wow, I never wold have thought about it.'" Encourage, inspire, instigate and teach improv!

If the assumptions from this video were true then we would have to start worrying about users buying products all together. If advertisers are not in control of there product images they will start focusing on methods that allow them to control their image, that in my mind is bad for social media.

Mike, Joana,

Thanks for your comments. I agree, social media is here to stay, and it is creating a whole new “connection culture.” Not everyone is jumping on board.
For example, one recent study showed that 73 percent of Fortune 100
have registered a total of 540 Twitter accounts, yet more than
half (52%) of those accounts are stagnant, as measured by number
of links, hashtags, references, and retweets.
www.webershandwick.com/resources/ws/flash/twittervention_study.pdf

Another study found that 28% of Fortune 100 Facebook pages had generated little or no comments. See also blog post: Are The Fortune 100 Now Beginning To Embrace Social Media Tools? <http: //www.readwriteweb.com/enterprise/2010/02/no-surprise-really---fortune-1.php></http:>
