DESKTOP 0 is a Mac OSX application created using openFrameworks that glitches your desktop. See video below if you are too afraid to download and try out for yourself. Created by Nik Hanselmann, a student currently pursuing an MFA in Digital Art and New Media at the University of California.

Dr. Mandala [iPhone]

Currently in review is the new iPhone painting application by Kenichi Hamada that allows you to create mysterious swirling patterns from dots on a revolving canvas. Inspired somewhat by the 60s spin art and work of Alfons Schilling and even later our own Damien Hirst, Dr. Mandala is a digital version of very popular rotating canvas painting.

Included also is a high level of customisation of how your dots appear and behave on the canvas. Besides being able to changed the dot size, you can also change the dot shape (only 2 available for now). You can turn the grid on/off to guide the dots or load an image from your photo album to paint over. There is also a bunch of shake operations as you can see in the video but I have never been fond of having to shake the phone to do anything so this one is on you.

Dr. Mandala, as appears in the video, does produce some pretty incredible patterns. I do like that the author adds a message to warn that: Staring for prolonged periods at rapidly rotating pictures may cause nausea. If this happens, please stop using this application immediately. Sounds like a must have I say =]

iSensorii [iPhone, MaxMSP]

iSensorii is a site specific art installation currently located at the Dallas Museum of Art. It uses Mac OSX application created using MaxMSP to generate sounds and visuals and receive input from iPhones using custom designed free application now available in the AppStore.

You can also download the exhibition app on your own computer and have a play. The site contains detailed step-by-step instructions on how to run and set-up the connection between your desktop and iphone app. There are two apps to download, first one being the MaxMSP app that creates a bridge of interfaces including Nintendo wiichucks. The second app is the display app, created using Unity, the final result of what you are controlling.

The apps/installation was created by VJ Anomolee (aka Matt (Heiu) Brooks), intermedia artist/creative trainer and video production guru. Broken Brothers [Games, Windows]

Broken Brothers Deluxe is a free indie strategy game available to download at www.spyeart.com. Submitted for this years IGF, Broken Brothers is one of my favourites to win. Somewhat goth/russian constructivist aesthetic strategy game, with a good mix of what you’d expect including unlocking units, fighting across insane terrain, levelling up by expanding across the map, and building an air force to rule the sky.

Amphibious Architecture [Environment]

Amphibious Architecture is a floating installation in New York waterways that glows and blinks to provide an interface between life above water and life below. It was developed by the Living Architecture Lab at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and the Environmental Health Clinic at New York University, and it was commissioned for Toward the Sentient City by the Architectural League of New York.

Two networks of floating interactive tubes, installed at sites in the East River and the Bronx River, house a range of sensors below water and an array of lights above water. The sensors monitor water quality, presence of fish, and human interest in the river ecosystem. The lights respond to the sensors and create feedback loops between humans, fish, and their shared environment. An SMS interface allows citizens to text-message the fish, to receive real-time information about the river, and to contribute to a display of collective interest in the environment.

Instead of treating the rivers with a “do-not-disturb” approach, the project encourages curiosity and engagement. Instead of treating the water as a reflective surface to mirror our own image and our own architecture, the project establishes a two-way interface between environments of land and water. In two different neighborhoods of New York, the installation creates a dynamic and captivating layer of light above the surface of the river. It makes visible the invisible, mapping a new ecology of people, marine life, buildings, and public space and sparking public interest and discussion.

Caught between ’Space invaders’ and a racing game, Minima is a simple, yet absolutely stunning virtual LED action extravaganza.

Change your color to survive in the jungle of pixels, yellow, pink, violet, make the right choice at the right time. You are playing a pixel displayed on a white line at the bottom part of the screen. The pixel can be moved to the left or to the right: touch the bottom part of the screen, on the right/left of the pixel to move it to the right/left. You can also change the color of the pixel , by touching colored (yellow/pink or violet) pixel coming from the top of the screen. Your pixel must be colored like the pixels coming touching it, else you’re gonna lose one of your lives. You’ve 5 lives for each level (9 ‘regular’ levels and 1 secret).

All of this packaged in a wonderful pixel LED aesthetic, and this includes every single element of the game, from menu, splash screen, score, to lives left. Pixel joy..

Slice [iPhone, Sound]

Now, not because The Strange Agency buy ad space on CAN, but because every app these guys release is plain simple awesome. Their new app Slice is just as awesome as Spoke and Sound Scope Space we already wrote about.

The team calls it: The ultimate DJ experience, Slice lets you juggle broken beats like a pro DJ with an absolutely unique touch interface. Jump around the loop, rearrange its pieces, select portions to make shorter loops, add and tweak echo effects, all in real time as the loop keeps playing!

I do have reservations about the skinned interface and to be honest I much preferred the original prototype (see movie below) but I can understand TSA wanting to appeal to the mainstream audience also. Their other apps are a little more honest to their function but Slice is slightly overdressed. Looks to one side, Slice is a fun little app that comes pre-loaded with some slick beats, but you can also add your own. Slice, chop, rearrange, loop, echo, should make your $0.99 go a long way.

Berna [Mac, MaxMSP, Sound]

Berna is a software simulation for Mac of a late 1950s electroacoustic music studio. Created using MaxMSP, Berna includes oscillators, filters, modulators, tape recorders, mixers, are all packed in a interface with historical accuracy.

At that time there wasn’t any electronic musical instruments market, as a matter of fact, most of the equipment was adapted from scientific tools belonging to radio engineering departments. Sometimes the equipment was built from scratch cannibalizing anything that had wires, tubes and pots, more rarely, the studios used the few commercial instruments available in those days, such as the Melchord, the Trautonium and the Theremin. Contrarily to what happens today, electronic music then was everything but fast and easy to create. A few minutes of electronic composition could take more than one year of work.

You can try a version before you buy but the full version, available post purchase will cost you around $10.
