CIBC and Rogers Unveil the Future of Mobile Payments in Canada

TORONTO, May 15, 2012 - CIBC and Rogers Communications today announced an agreement to launch Canada's first joint mobile payment solution, allowing Canadians to pay with their CIBC credit card at the checkout counter using their Rogers "Near Field Communications" (NFC) enabled smartphone. Beginning later this year, customers will be able to use this payment capability at merchants across Canada where contactless credit card payments are accepted.

This announcement represents the first time a bank and a wireless carrier have joined forces to offer a commercially available mobile payments solution to Canadians that leverages the secure SIM card inside an NFC-enabled Rogers smartphone. This new solution aligns to guidelines announced yesterday by the Canadian Bankers Association for mobile payments in Canada, as well as those developed by respected international associations such as the GSM Association (GSMA), the association of mobile operators and related companies dedicated to standardizing and supporting GSM technology.

Hyundai to bring their new Blue Link mobile application to BlackBerry

We’ve started to see BlackBerry and RIM gain momentum over the past few weeks, pretty much since they demonstrated the all-new BlackBerry 10 operating system. Today Hyundai USA has announced that their new Blue Link car connect application would be coming to BlackBerry in the coming months. The app will allow you to start and unlock your car, among a bevy of other features that will make the car connect application an "industry" leader, according to Hyundai USA.

Blue Link Mobile App Highlights

Completely redesigned interface and navigation
Swipe gestures allow quick access to core features
Remotely access many Blue Link® features found on MyHyundai.com
Manage multiple Blue Link-enrolled vehicles
Remotely control vehicle functions: Door lock/unlock, horn & lights,
lights-only and remote vehicle start (not available on all models)
Search, save and send POIs to vehicles for in-car navigation
Innovative new features: car finder, parking meter/timer and vehicle diagnostics
Remotely manage Blue Link alerts and notifications

The application is currently available on Android and iOS and is currently in development for the BlackBerry platform. One thing to note is that there wasn’t a mention if this app is being developed for the current BlackBerry platform or BlackBerry 10; if Hyundai is on the ball they’ll make sure it’s available on the current platform as well. What's next for gaming on BlackBerry

Gaming has never really been something that BlackBerry was known for. We've had the old-standby Brickbreaker since the start as well as a few good games here and there, but we never had the "latest and greatest". When the BlackBerry PlayBook was released, BlackBerry fans everywhere were overjoyed and gaming on the BlackBerry platform changed forever. With the new hardware, we could now have our share of great games as well. Things have come a long way in the last year, and moving forward to BlackBerry 10, it looks like they won't be slowing down.

At BlackBerry World 2012 this year there was a huge BlackBerry 10 vibe, but more so there was a great buzz about gaming. Plenty of big game companies like Marmalade and Gameloft were showing their support and excitement for the BlackBerry 10 platform, and that itself is truly something to look forward to.

As BlackBerry 10 approaches, more and more game companies are getting on board and either making new games for the platform, or porting existing titles over since RIM has been making it so easy to do so. Keep reading and we'll take a quick look at what we can expect for gaming on BlackBerry 10.

Facebook for BlackBerry updated to version 3.1.0.9 in BlackBerry Beta Zone

While RIM just recently released the official build of Facebook version 3.0 with BBM integration, they are already hard at work with an updated version in BlackBerry Beta Zone. Facebook version 3.1.0.9 is now available to Beta Zone members. In this new version, one of the fixes is to an issue some were experiencing with comments taking an extended amount of time to load. This build also features many other improvements and bug fixes, all of which can be found below.

How to use a micro SIM in your BlackBerry smartphone

Using a standard SIM card in your GSM (and some CDMA) BlackBerry is pretty easy to grasp at this point. Most come pre-installed if you buy your device from a carrier store, and even if it isn't, getting it in your phone is pretty straight forward. If you're like me however, you might have a micro SIM you want to use in your BlackBerry (I often use both an iPhone 4 / Bold 9900 and swap SIMs between them) it can be a bit more tricky.

Going forward to BlackBerry 10, the micro SIM will most likely be the card of choice for phones as we've seen in the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha already. If you want to use a micro SIM in your current BlackBerry however, you'll need to either pick one up from your carrier or cut down your current SIM (which I don't recommend). You'll then need to purchase a micro SIM adapter. Read on and we'll take a look at how to use a micro SIM card in your BlackBerry smartphone.

Porsche Design P'9981 BlackBerry named Smartphone of the Year!

In Stuttgart, Germany a few days ago the BlackBerry Porsche P'9981 was honoured at the Plus X Awards by receiving the gong for Smartphone of the Year 2012. The Plus X Awards celebrate innovative technologies, as well as sports and lifestyle products that are "viable for the future and possess at least one 'Plus X' factor" (as quoted from the Award's website).

The BlackBerry Porsche P'9981 won the award for combining the Porsche Design's classic and 'puristic' design with RIM's own innovative BlackBerry technologies. Axel Kettenring, Managing Director RIM Germany, says: "We are very proud to receive this seal of quality. Receiving the Plus X Award for the Porsche Design P'9981 smartphone confirms we are operating at the cutting edge with our demand for design and quality."

Even if the Porsche P'9981 isn't a BlackBerry device that the majority of our readers will own, it's nice to see it win quite a prestigious award. A closer look at bbUI.js - RIM's open source UI toolkit designed to help create applications with native-like capabilities

During BlackBerry World 2012 and BlackBerry 10 Jam there was a lot of information released for BlackBerry developers. The highlight of the event was of course the BlackBerry 10 Native SDK with Cascades which, allows developers to create graphically rich, high performance native applications in C/C++ or Qt but in that mix, was the BlackBerry 10 WebWorks SDK which allows developers to create native-like applications using common web programming technologies.

During BlackBerry 10 Jam, Tim Neil took the stage to demo a lot of this in action but unless you attended the event, you may have missed some of the examples of bbUI.js that were shown off. Perhaps, one of the more interesting take-aways is the fact that it supports older devices in some cases considering there has been a lot of attention given to the fact that previous BlackBerry devices for example: the BlackBerry Bold 9900 will not be upgraded to BlackBerry 10. The power of bbUI.js allows for some design influences from BlackBerry 10 to make their way to older BlackBerry devices and that's a good thing. It also explains why a lot of attention to HTML5 was given to BlackBerry 7 previously as well.

Many of the examples were available for preview ahead of BlackBerry 10 Jam but with that event now wrapped up, you can have a look at what was shown off there and have glimpse of what will be coming to future BlackBerry devices. All in all, bbUI.js is yet-another great option for developers to build apps for BlackBerry devices and quite frankly, add some new polish to older ones, which will still be supported for quite a while yet. 3D theme pack now available in Scrapbook for the BlackBerry PlayBook

It was less than a month ago that we saw a new pack added to Scrapbook for the BlackBerry PlayBook, but here we are with a new one available! This one is called 3D, and comes with four new backgrounds and nine new stickers that you can use to create fun new scrapbook pages. You can download Scrapbook for free in BlackBerry App World, but if you're just looking for the new theme pack, it's available from within the app itself. Just open it up and you should see an asterisk on the packs tab on the right hand side.

Free Avengers avatars for BlackBerry Messenger now available from BBM Animated

The team over at BBM Animated let us know that they have just updated their site, adding brand new content! Not only have they added more animated gifs for your BlackBerry Messenger avatar, they've introduced a section for trending themes. You can click on the tab marked Hot to see what's new in that category, as it will change up depending on what is currently hot (movies, music, etc). Right now you can find animated avatars featuring The Avengers!

Of course, the gifs offered on BBM Animated are free to download and easy to get onto your BlackBerry. Simply navigate to the site from the link below, pick out which avatar you'd like to use, and save it to your BlackBerry. From here you can open up your media folder and find the saved gif, open it and hit your menu button. Choose "Set As BBM Display Picture" and you're all set. You can also change the avatar from BBM directly. Go to your profile and click your current avatar, which will open up your pictures folder. Choose the gif you downloaded and you're done. Note, animated avatars only work with BBM v6.1 and above.

Evernote for BlackBerry updated to v3.5.407

Evernote is one of the CrackBerry staff's favorite apps, and it's really no wonder why. It's versatile, easy to use, and cross platform syncing ensures that you'll always have your stuff when you need it, no matter what device you're on. Evernote also receives fairly frequent updates, and today's update brings the BlackBerry app to v3.5.407. While not a huge jump from the last version, this one does have a couple of important fixes.

Fix issue with BES blocking any connection
Fix issue on note loading blocking syncing

Make sure if you have the app installed on your BlackBerry you head over to App World and grab the update. And if you aren't currently an Evernote user, you can use the link below to rectify that.

The app tray - swipe right to get back to open apps

Vivek Bhardwaj wowed us on stage at BlackBerry World when he provided our first glance of BlackBerry 10 alongside RIM CEO Thorsten Heins. Today it appears that Vivek is following up his on stage demos with some more personal press briefings, as we're seeing some new photos and BlackBerry 10 preview stories pop up on the net (CNet Crave, KnowYourMobile).

For the most part the demos appear to be the same as what we saw at BlackBerry World, showing off the flow experience and new keyboard, but looking at the stories we have gained some additional intelligence as to exactly the homescreen layout will work.

The big question that wasn't addressed at BlackBerry World was the app icon tray. The traditional homescreen view that has the dump of all the application shortcuts installed on the device. At BBWorld we saw the multitasking view, which has the "minimized" version of running apps, but we never saw a way to access the application tray.

But now we know. From the title/glance view, you only need to swipe left to enter the app icon tray, from which you can launch closed apps. Beautiful. You can grab a gander below at a couple more BB10 homescreen photos. I am especially in love with the ability to swipe into the message inbox from within any app with the hooking gesture (swipe up from the bottom right corner to get a notification preview, then over to the left to slide into messages).

BlackBerry DevCon renamed BlackBerry Jam Americas; Taking place September 25-27 in San Jose

As if you didn't see this one coming, BlackBerry DevCon has been renamed BlackBerry Jam Americas. Following up on the BlackBerry 10 Jam conference, RIM is taking the show on the road with the BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour. The tour is making stops in cities across the globe, all leading up to BlackBerry Jam Americas. This year the conference is also moving from San Francisco to San Jose, California. BlackBerry launches new campaign for ‘people of action’

BlackBerry Bridge has again been updated, this time to version 2.0.0.31. The only major note is a fix for devices running OS 7.1. This probably isn't a sign of a BlackBerry PlayBook OS update as it has been many times in the past, but who doesn't love an update?
