A quick follow-up note to my previous post to let you know that the move and maintenance of CorelDRAW.com has been completed and that everything is working fine. Update: There appears to be problems accessing the forums through NNTP from certain locations. We are working at getting this resolved shortly.

Update 2: The problems with the NNTP access have been resolved and everthing should be working fine.

CorelDRAW.com will be unavailable for maintenance on Thursday March 5th, 2009

Hello all,

just wanted to let you know ahead of time that we will be conducting some maintenance work on all the Corel communities in the afternoon of Thursday March 5th, 2009 (EST time zone). We will be changing the hardware on which our communities are running to something more powerful with a faster Internet connection and the communities, including CorelDRAW.com will be unavailable during the transition (both through web and NNTP). At the same time, we will also resolve a problem we had with certain mails not being delivered, especially to AOL users.

Once on the new hardware, you should not see any difference except for those who connect through NNTP to the forums. After the upgrade of the servers, the CorelDRAW NNTP server will no longer require you to add the @coreldraw to your username to log in.

And while the CorelDRAW.com community is down, here is another link that you can use to make progress at the Balloon Racer game ;-)

A few more things about the new CorelDRAW.com

Now that the updated site has been up and running for the last few days and that everything has been transitionned successfully from the previous version of CorelDRAW.com, I wanted to add a few more comments regarding some of the hidden new features on CorelDRAW.com:

CorelDRAW.com now supports OpenID as a way to sign in. OpenID is an open standard for digital security, supported by many sites such as Yahoo!, AOL, Flickr and many other sites... this means that if you have an account with one of these sites, you might already have an OpenID account that will help you sign into CorelDRAW.com.
RSS feeds have been added to many different places. RSS is an open standard that enables you to syndicated the content that is created on CorelDRAW.com and be notified when something new is happening.
You can now add announcements on your profile. Think of it as something similar to the status updates on sites such as Facebook or Twitter, but with the extra flexibility to add more content attached to the subject line.
You can now customize your profile in a much more detailled way, and you can actually do rich-text editing for your signature for example. Please make sure to keep your signature short and don't link to large images in your signatures.
For those of you who have a blog and/or a gallery on CorelDRAW.com, you will be getting more statistics about the visitors to those. The site only started collecting the data on December 30, 2008, so please allow for a few days before these make any sense. And for those with a blog, check out the configuration option as it is now possible to link to your feedburner account and much more.
Blogs on CorelDRAW.com can also support publishing podcasts. Storage of the actual audio files is not possible on CorelDRAW (there are many other good file hosting services available), but if you want to have a podcast, you could manage the RSS feed from here.
In the wiki section, which is starting very strongly, you have the option to have pages and sub-pages... this should help categorize the various tips&tricks by product. Thank you for not putting all your message in the home folder of the wiki ;-)

Attachements in forums

We are in the process of fixing a problem related to displaying some attachments in the forums. No data has been lost, but there has been a little problem with the transfer to the new location with the upgrade yesterday. We expect everything to be solved by the end of the day.

Update (10:31 AM EST):The attachements in the most recent posts have been restored. We are now working at getting the older attachements back. I will post another message when everything is done.

Update 2 (Jan 2nd 2009): All the attachements in the posts have been restored and the upgrade of CorelDRAW.com is completed successfully.

Welcome to the new CorelDRAW.com

We just finished the major upgrade of CorelDRAW.com and everything seems to be running smoothly. We will be monitoring the site very closely over the next few days to make sure that everything is perfect. If you have any problem or notice anything strange, please don't hesitate to contact the admin team of the site through the site conversation system or per email: coreldrawcommunity {at} corel {dot} com.

A few of the changes include:

Major evolution of the private messaging system into conversations, so that you can exchange messages with groups of users. It is also possible to limit conversation with only your friends if you want (to avoid spam).
The concept of friends and favorites has been greatly enhanced. You now can accept friendships (similar to other social networks) and then will be notified of the activity of your friends. The favorites system has also been greatly evolved based on your feedback and should be a lot more useable.
The Forums introduce a new distinction between discussions vs. questions. If you post a question, it is then possible to mark an answer as the best one, so that it is at the top of the list going forward.
The real-time chat room is a lot more visible and accessible.
Wikis! Yes, finally. We know you've been asking for this for quite a while. Now it's up to you to populate the content. Please provide us some feedback regarding the wikis in the community site forums (do you want additional wikis, ...)
We have merged the photo galleries with the download sections, which means that for those who had / will have galleries, you will be able to post a lot more file formats (think color palettes, marcros, CDR files, ...) in addition to images.
Finally (I am missing quite a lot actually, but this is one more big thing), you now all have a brand new personalized home page, which gives you an overview of what is happening from your perspective.

In preparation of the upcoming CorelDRAW.com upgrade (find out more in Gérard's blog about this), we will be doing some clean-up in the blogs and galleries in the community. If you requested a blog and/or a gallery in the past, but have never posted an entry or uploaded an image, we will be closing down your blog / gallery.

In addition, and because we will be merging the galleries and the downloads sections in to a media gallery, we will also stop allow uploading new content to the community download section. The content previously uploaded will still be available (we are not deleting any content that is related to CorelDRAW) going forward.

Automated emails problems for AOL users in North America

We are currently experiencing some problems with the automated emails sent from the community to users with an @AOL.com email address due to new anti-spam policies AOL introduced recently. We are looking at resolving this problem. In the mean time, if you have an @aol.com email address and are trying to create an account on this site, I recommend you either use another email address (Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo have no problems) or that you create your account and contact the administrators of this site (coreldrawcommunity @ gmail . com or coreldrawcommunity @ corel . com) to get your password and be able to log in.

Marking all forums posts as read

Since we launched CorelDRAW.com, there was a recurring request to add the capability to mark all previous posts in the forums as read. We tried to get it done in various ways before, but none was working reliably. Until today. We just pushed a minor update to CorelDRAW.com with the capability to mark all messages posted in the forums as read. Simply go to http://coreldraw.com/forums/ and click on the "Mark all posts as read" link in the Shortcuts section in the upper right corner of the page. Please note that this is not reversible. You will still have access to all the messages previously posted, but they won't show up as unread in the forums.

In addition to this change, we are also starting to mark all messages as read when a new user account is created on CorelDRAW.com. This means that new members will only get indications of messages they have not read since they joined the community.
