Normally, I do not discuss drugs on any of my blogs. However, this advertisement for legalizing and taxing marijuana to support the tax base makes sense to me.

Perhaps my change of heart has something to do with my son being arrested, again, for smoking marijuana. He is only 19 years old and is almost a junior in college, but he will be spending the rest of his college career in jail. Yes, he smokes marijuana. This is like the fourth time they have busted him. Yes, he is stupid.

Last time, DEA busted down his door with guns drawn. This time, the three big policemen from the narcotics division came. I believe the cops in San Marcos would rather bust a skinny, stupid, struggling teenager than tackle someone with a gun or a knife, maybe someone dangerous like a burglar or murderer, what about child abusers and other true criminals. Why my son?

We elect politicians who have been caught with crack and cocaine while in an elective office. He forgive our officials who spend state money on flings to foreign countiries. We allow governors to rewrite humane laws, sue people who pissed them off, and turn down money from the federal government.

Just this month, I have had the opportunity to help some folks with some Blogger template issues. These are questions I have had before, so I thought I would share them in a series of posts so that perhaps they will help someone else.

Before Making Changes to Blog Template or Settings

Backup your template. You have read this before. From you DASHBOARD > SETTINGS > EDIT HTML > EXPAND WIDGET TEMPLATE (check it) > copy entire template to a plain text editor, like NotePad or WordPad. SAVE AS blogname_backup_6 digit date (CoolAdzine_backup_070109). Do this for all your blogs.

TIP: May I also suggest that you add another blog to your dashboard? Call it TEST or SAND BOX or whatever you wish. Copy your entire blog template to this test blog. Experiment with anything on this blog before changing your actual blog. Make sure you update your Google profile to NOT show this test blog.

One Way To Remove Navbar In Blogger

1. Open your Blogger dashboard.

A week later, the official explanation appeared here J une 15 : Matt Cutts: Gadgets, Google, and SEO : PageRank sculpting. Rather than enlightening us, Matt gave us yet another SEO term to befuddle us: Page Rank Sculpting.

Now, I tried to read and understand this post, because I wanted to be able to pass on some useful information. However, when Matt wrote, "PageRank corresponds to the principal eigenvector of that normalized link matrix." What? AAUUUGGGHHHH!

Ten years ago, I first heard the term, search engine optimization (SEO) from a Yahoo! guru at a conference. The big thing back then was to do away with frames, add meaningful title and metatags.

Today, I am a "do follow" blogger and the only links I am not following are the ones above in this article. So what should you do? I am heading over to check the blog of my favorite SEO guru, Andy Beard.

Learning styles and personality types are part and parcel of what we become as we age and gain experience. If you take this test at different times in your life, you will see how your personality and learning styles change.

On the left side you will see indicators of personality types. Perception involves all the ways in which we become aware of things, people, happenings or ideas. Judgment involves the process by which we come to conclusions about what we have perceived.

Protect Your Identity, Even From Relatives

From 5/19/2009 article, Identity Theft Hits Women Hardest, by eMarketer.

According to a study by Affinion Security Center , 17 percent of female identity theft victims lost $1,000 or more due to the crime. Contrast this figure with only ten percent of males. More men (61 percent) avoid losing money than women (53 percent).

Forty-two percent of identity theft cases are closed in less than one week, twenty percent are solved within one month, while thirteen percent take two months to six months to solve.

A survey from the Identity Theft Assistance Center (ITAC) found that 72 percent of victims do not know who has stolen their personal information.

Of those that do know, the theft is committed by friends, relatives or in-home employees (26.5 percent). Computer-related fraud accounts for 21.6 percent; lost or stolen wallets, checkbooks and credit card accounts make up 15.1 percent; while mail fraud accounts for 11.6 percent.

According to Affinion Security Center, to protect yourself:

Shred documents before disposal.
Monitor credit card accounts.
Keep personal information locked in a safe.

Suggestions from ITAC include:

Keep data in the home and workplace in secure location.
Monitor accounts for unusual activity.
Keep anti-virus software updated.
Upgrade browser and operating systems.

I would add:

Expand your security protection to include firewall, spyware and adware.
Encrypt your password files or use a utility like RoboForm to keep passwords and other personal information safe.
Do not download attachments from email without scanning.
Do not download freeware, plugins, themes, templates games, PDFs or other freebies unless you scan the download before installing it.

I have never had my identity stolen, but I did have my teenager get one of my gasoline credit cards. He did not have a car, but he managed to charge up over $100 in cokes, chips, candy and gum within two weeks. If he had not been so stupid as to use the same gas station, directly across the street from where he lived, I would not have discovered the culprit so easily.

So, I guess I should add these:

Keep your credit cards that you are not using locked up.
If you miss a credit card, cancel it. The trouble to replace is worth it.
Shred those credit card checks as soon as you know what they are.
Call credit card companies and request that they send no unsolicited checks.

. . . 1 billion applications served, 35,000 applications available and more than 30 million devices in market. Apple's meteoric success with the App Store (launched a mere nine months ago) is fueling a mobile-application market boom.

IPhone owners download an average of 20+ applications to their devices. Pinch Media analyzed 30-million iPhone app downloads. They discovered that only 5 percent of users would open either a free or a paid app 30 days after the initial download.

This finding, however, did not stop development of new apps for other platforms.

While the selection is currently limited, you will see more apps on Android. There is a downloading software development kit on the site.
Microsoft introduced Windows Live for mobile.
There are quite a few Blackberry apps available on Built for Blackberry. As you might imagine, the apps are mostly news, travel, sports, music and online banking and trading.
Nokia, with nearly 40 percent of worldwide smart phone market, announced the opening of its Ovi Store with 20,000 apps available for download.

All these statistics have marketers desperately trying to monetize the apps. It has been posited that the worldwide mobile-advertising market will grow from $700 million in 2008 to $7.2 billion by 2012.

While marketing on the small-screen has its own unique set of problems, I think you will see more embedding of product brands into video or game clips. Some applications provide a needed service, like banking, which is definitely brand building.

You can also find apps for Twitter, FaceBook, MySpace, Flickr and many other social sites I have not visited.

Now, if they would just invent a app that would banish the dirty sock odor from my son's room. LOL

I received a FedEx package today. I opened it and there was a package of chocolate-covered grasshoppers! Attached was a card that said:

ENTREPRENEURS can CHANGE the WORLD. JOIN the MOVEMENT NOW!

I had no idea about grasshopper.com, but I now I know! Turns out it is an advanced telephone service for entrepreneurs. Evidently, they are rebranding gotvmail.com to grasshopper.com and this is one of their marketing tools. See the video below for more information on changing the world. LOL

So it seems the answer is dynamic keyword insertion. What is dynamic keyword insertion? It’s an advanced feature in AdWords which allows the advertisers to insert code into the ad text. Then when the searcher sees your ad, the keyword they used in that search replaces the code in you ad text.

I have noticed that some advertisers are taking advantage of this technique. You will notice it, too; it throws the entire ad format off. Guaranteed to draw the eye to the ad. Read the entire ineedhits post for more information.

Has the Burger King Lost his Mind?

The commercial aired Monday night during the NCAA title game. The commercial for Burger King feature dancing girls, a rapping king and SpongeBob square pants singing to a well-known tune.

It may surprise you to learn the ads are meant to sell kid's meals. Some parents are saying that this Burger King commercial is--to put it politely--in poor taste. I am curious what y'all think. Does the adage "sex sells" now hold to the under six-year-old demographic?

My opinion can be summed up thus: What does booty have to do with a kid's meal?
Now I want to hear your opinion...

We gotta keep searchin' searchin'

Never the greatest master of timing, Microsoft is looking to launch their "more focused" search engine (Kumo?) this summer. After trying to acquire or partner with Yahoo! last year, the strategy seems to have become "let's throw money at another agency and see what happens."

. . .the forthcoming campaign will be careful to not position "Kumo" as a competitor to Yahoo or Google and instead cast it as a reimagined search engine that ups the game by yielding fewer but more-focused results. The proposed strategy is probably a good -- if not the only -- way to go.

Microsoft search is languishing in third place, declining 15 percent from February 2008 to February 2009. During this time, Google grew in share of consumer searches by 7 percent to 63.3 percent and Yahoo gained 5 percent to 20.6 percent share of consumer searches.

On AllThingsD, there is an internal memo from Microsoft's search guru, Satya Nadella, urging all company employees to try the new search engine and provide feedback for improvement or bugs.

Nothing earth-shaking, but the memo contained these statistics:

40% of queries go unanswered;
50% of queries are about searchers returning to previous tasks; and,
46% of search sessions are longer than 20 minutes.

This is sad. If we phrase our search query correctly, we should see pages of relevant search engine results. We do not. Instead we are shown the paid ads, then the organic results from the "professional" sites, then the blog results. Down the side column, we have news stories, videos and images that may or may not be related to our query.

Matt says that marketers should not worry about the order of keywords in an URL. He said keywords in the URL helps some. He suggests keeping the number of keywords in a URL to a minimum of 4 or 5.

In the ever changing world of search engine marketing, it is never easy to determine what is necessary, what is optional and what is excess baggage.

I am researching easily understood information on SEM and SEO, which I will bring back here for us to think about.

Tax Time

I hate doing taxes. I have downloaded my history from PayPal, grabbed my 1099-MISCs and started organizing information, but my heart is just not into it. I sit here, thinking of anything but calling up the tax program and inputting my data.

I even thought about applying for an extension, but that will just put off the inevitable. Also, it costs money to file an extension. If you owe money, they will charge interest on the amount from April 15.

Maybe I should just NOT file a return? Then I can play stupid when I am asked why I did not. "Oh, I thought after you turned 55 you did not have to file taxes" or "I thought we did away with taxes" or "I have to pay self-employment taxes?" This worked so well for some of President Obama's appointees. How can you NOT know to file taxes?

I think that if we file a tax return, unlike many politicos, we should get a bonus. Not a AIG bonus, but maybe $100 bonus? What do you think?

Laptot Is Big Hit With Husband

My husband Michael had a laptop but our son's Pit Bull stepped on it and broke the wireless connection and keyboard. Michael used a dial-up Internet connection for over a year. For Valentine's Day, I purchased him a netbook--or laptot as I call it. I thought he had suffered enough for leaving the laptop out where the dog could step on it. LOL!

I was not sure if Michael would like the small screen and keyboard, but it was all we could really afford. Not to worry. He loves it! I see him with the laptot on his chest, watching old movies he found on the Internet and he always gives me a big smile.

If you have been curious about these small, inexpensive laptots, go to a store and try one. I think you will be amazed. The keyboard is a little small, but you get used to it or hook up a full sized keyboard. The picture on the small screen is crystal clear.
