Nov 8, 2009: Growing Op - A Film by Michael Melski at ACME Comedy Theatre

AWARD-WINNING FEATURE GROWING OP PREMIERES AT LOS ANGELES COMEDY FESTIVAL

(TORONTO) The feature film GROWING OP will have its West Coast Premiere at the Los Angeles Comedy Festival on Sunday Nov.8, at the famous Acme Comedy Theatre in Hollywood.

A comedy sensation in its Canadian festival run and release, GROWING OP tells the tale of Quinn, a teenage boy who 'rebels against rebellion', embodied by his home-schooling, fugitive parents, by resolving to go to high school for the first time. But leaving the family ‘farm’ causes Quinn to discover that the real jungle isn’t in his living room, but in the bizarre nature of the suburban status quo.

Heartfelt and hilarious, GROWING OP is a sly satire of classic 80's teen films, delivering twists on high school comedy and family drama. It features a powerhouse indie cast, including Rosanna Arquette (Afterhours), Wallace Langham (CSI Las Vegas), Rachel Blanchard (Flight of the Conchords), Katie Boland (Adoration), Alberta Watson (Spanking the Monkey), and Steven Yaffee (MVP).

The film has an unforgettable rock soundtrack featuring acclaimed international artists SLOAN, MATT MAYS AND EL TORPEDO, CLASSIFIED, JOEL PLASKETT EMERGENCY, AMELIA CURRAN, IN FLIGHT SAFETY, JENN GRANT, TWO HOURS TRAFFIC and post-punk heroes TEENAGE HEAD.

“I’m excited that the film is part of the opening weekend of the LA Comedy Fest” says Writer-Director Michael Melski of his feature directing debut. “It’s an 18 day extravaganza with film premieres and live acts, in the center of the comedy universe. GROWING OP has been very popular north of the border, and it’s a universal humor, so I expect it will translate well to US audiences.”

A recent award-winner for BEST IN SHOW, FEATURE FILM in the 2009 Accolade Film Competition, GROWING OP is exec-produced by celebrated filmmaker Thom Fitzgerald. Shortly after its Canadian premiere last year, GROWING OP was acquired by LA’s Shoreline Entertainment for International Sales.

Some response to GROWING OP from critics and festivals:
“A Hilarious Feel-Good Teen Movie!” Cinema Eye

“3 and ½ Stars (out of 4) Sweet and Surprising...A High Note for East Coast Filmmaking” Chronicle Herald
“A Definite Hit...Two Thumbs Way Up. Growing Op is defiantly a crowd-pleaser!” The Argosy

“Cleverly sends up a slew of genres—the high school movie; the rebel movie; the dope comedy—turning them inside out for satiric pleasure. Don't Bogart your time—check this out.” Moovy.Ca

“GROWING OP is top-notch entertainment...It has exactly the right combination of a well-written script, obviously high production standards, and great acting...Katie Boland really stands out as his sarcastic sister...A brilliant performance by Wallace Langham.” Popcorn Philosophy

“GROWING OP is loaded with laugh out loud jokes, but thankfully most of them aren't based on pot smoking teenagers. The humour in this film comes from the heart of what it is really about - the difficulty and awkwardness of growing up...Wonderfully acted and a pleasure to watch.” Schemamag

“Pitch Perfect Satire...A gem.” Vancouver International Film Festival

“Witty...High Grade!” Eye Weekly
“Fast, furious and very funny!” Atlantic Film Festival
“GROWING OP dares to take a different path... it’s rare to see a teen film that gets the most of out ludicrous situations to make you laugh.” The Cultural Post

“GROWING OP, the ultimate coming of age film, is the best capture of social interaction amongst youth I have ever seen. I felt like I was watching this generation's “Risky Business”! Michael Melski's directorial debut is nothing short of brilliant...” Silver Wave Film Festival

“GROWING OP Far From Ordinary...With great performances from virtually the entire cast, and a satirical sensibility that anyone could appreciate, this film is definitely worth your time.” Intermedias

The wildly-enthusiastic response from audiences can be found on the GROWING OP Facebook Fan Page or in IMDB user comments.

GROWING OP screens on Nov.8 at 6:00pm at the Acme Comedy Theatre in Hollywood, 135 North La Brea Avenue. Valet Parking is available.

Nov 15, 2009: Say Anything + Eisley with Moneen + Miniature Tigers at Republic

With a breakthrough pop/punk sound, a poignant and often sarcastic anti-mainstream message, and a loyal fan-base that knows every well-chosen word to every Anthem-like song, Say Anything has written the soundtrack for the underground teens and early 20s of America. Recounting the many struggles and painful contradictions of growing up, some have called Say Anything's lyricist and frontman, Max Bemis, "the Bob Dylan of today" for his rare ability to truly capture the attitude and honesty of a generation. Say Anything's hit songs include "Woe", "Admit It", "Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too", "Walk with the Glory of Love", and their brand new single "Hate Everyone" that just came out this week! They play Republic on November 15th, less than one month after their highly-anticipated album "In Defense of a Genre" hits stores.

Nov 21, 2009: Mitzi MacDonald and Keltic Reign family band at The Wine Press

Mitzi MacDonald, award-winning singer-songwriter has been performing throughout Canada and the US until she settled here in St. Louis. Mitzi brings the flavor of her homeland, (Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia) to her music and her performances. At the Wine Press, she will be playing a stunning grand piano at this intimate wine-beer bar, located not far from CWE and Gaslight Square. She will be backed by Keltic Reign: Mike Levine on guitar, her son Andrew Laws on bass, and her girls, Holly Laws on Fiddle and mandolin, Ashby Laws on accordion and irish tin whistle. Holly and Ashby are dancers at St. Louis Irish Arts, and will be sharing a few steps as well. Principal fiddler Anna Allen will make a guest appearance on some tunes, as well.

Mitzi loves to share real life experiences through her songs. Beginning with her life on an island, on the east coast of Canada, to the present day in the city of St. Louis, her songs carry the listener from her youth through the joys of raising a family, and growing spiritually. She eventually comes full circle, back to the traditional roots of her Scottish and Irish heritage. She lately has been known to do covers of songs by Carole King and Carly Simon, among others.

Nov 22, 2009: McGill on the Move with Professor Wendy Thomson In Los Angeles at Luxe Hotel Sunset Blvd

The McGill Alumni Associations of Southern California cordially invite graduates, family and friends to attend a special lecture and reception with

Professor Wendy Thomson
Director of the McGill School of Social Work

“There and Back Again: The Changing World of Social Policy”

In the wake of the near global economic collapse, fundamental questions are on the international agenda. National governments are back in the picture, expected to stimulate the economy while protecting individuals and families from income insecurity and homelessness. The last 30 years have witnessed a host of social innovations in many areas of social policy, a response in part to changing demographics and family relationships, views on public finance, and a redrawing of the borders between personal and public responsibility. With dwindling resources, what investment choices should governments make? How can we design social policies that provide more choice and personalized services within universal programs? What do research and experience show to be best practices to ensure better outcomes?

Dr Wendy Thomson, CBE. After a distinguished career in public services in the UK, Dr Thomson joined McGill University as Professor of Social Policy and Director of the School of Social Work in 2005. Currently, Thomson teaches social policy and management and is associated with the Centre on Research on Children and Families, the Institute on International Development Studies, and the McGill World Platform’s program on Social Determinants of Health. She advises governments on health and social services in Canada, Africa, Europe and the Middle East, and serves as Director on several Boards including, the “Agence de Santé et Service Sociaux de Montréal”, the McGill University Health Centre and Pinnacle PSG UK. Amongst her research grants are studies examining social exclusion in Nunavik, and Evidence-based Management of Child Welfare (both from the SSHRC), access to professional education at McGill for Aboriginal people, and minority language community access to health services in Quebec (both funded by Health Canada).

Formerly, she was British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s Chief Adviser on Public Service Reform, and led the Office of Public Service Reform in the Cabinet Office. From 1999 to 2001, she set up the first inspection service of local government in England and Wales, as Director of Inspection at the Audit Commission. Until 1999, she was Chief Executive of the London Borough of Newham when the Council delivered major regeneration projects and improved its service performance, gaining recognition as Council of the Year. Before joining Newham, Wendy was Chief Executive of the national mental health charity Turning Point working with the Princess of Wales as its patron.

Nov 22, 2009: McGill on the Move with Professor Wendy Thomson (San Francisco) at The Fairmont San Francisco

The McGill Alumni Associations of Northern California cordially invite graduates, family and friends to attend a special lecture and reception with

About Dr Wendy Thomson, CBE
