Kick, jump, tumble and celebrate your birthday!

When my daughter, who’s been studying Martial arts for several years, requested a Kung Fu birthday party, I had to put my party planning skills to the test. First, not all of her friends took classes, so there were safety considerations. Second, at the time there were no products on the market to give me a helping hand. Another consideration was our limited space and whether I really wanted eight children kicking, jumping and Karate-chopping their way through the house.

Problems solved…
We held the party at Community Martial Arts. They hosted parties every Saturday and it was very affordable. This covered the space and safety considerations. They supplied the space, activities, martial arts demonstration, introductory lesson and even cut the birthday cake with a broad sword! The kids’ faces lit up when the sword came out!

How do martial artists survive a power outage?

Being in a power outage can be very frustrating. Here is some advice that may help you the next time there is a storm and you lose power for a few or more days.

To avoid darkness:

Attach a strip of glow-in-the-dark tape to your flashlights to make them easy to find.
Keep a flashlight in every room
Invest in headlamps. You will have your hands free and can even read a book in bed while wearing one. I have several that I have used for ghost hunting or out coyote hunting.
Stock up on kerosene lamps (visit secondhand stores and flea markets). We found two in our garage when we moved in, but have several is nice to give you light when batteries may not be in abundance.
Buy candles when they are on sale
Push lights that you have seen on TV are also helpful to have in the bathroom. They are relatively cheap and last a good amount of time and will help kids face their fear of the dark if they have something they can push to light up the room.

To stay warm:

As soon as the power goes out, drape all windows with blankets or whatever you have.
Select one room in which people—and pets—can spend most of their time together.
Call shelters and hotels to see if they will allow pets, in case you need to leave your home and bring your pets.

Cooking and eating:

Have potluck dinners with your neighbors and take turns hosting. You’ll be eating better and getting to know your neighbors at the same time.
Use your outdoor grill for cooking, but only outdoors. Never use one indoors. No better time to eat steak!
Potatoes serve as a dual purpose. You can use them as food items to cook on the grill but also heat them on the grill and wrap them in blankets to give warmth to cold bones.

To avoid damage:

Protect water pipes from freezing by wrapping them with layers of newspapers and then plastic wrap.
To avoid damage from falling branches, don’t park your cars under trees.
Open your refrigerator or freezer door only when absolutely necessary. Plan ahead to minimize the time the door is open.
Fill clean plastic milk jugs with water and put outside to freeze solid (if the weather is cold enough). Put these jugs into coolers, which can serve as temporary refrigerators.
Take your houseplants to your workplace or a friend’s house.

For folks who lose their water when the power goes out:

Fill up your bathtub with water when a storm threatens (for washing and flushing).
Pack snow in buckets and bring indoors to melt.
Try to store four to five gallons of fresh clean drinking water in the garage or basement just in case this happens.

Boxing Students Fight in Evansville Show

Boxing and MMA students from Community Martial Arts got to compete in a local show held by South Paw Boxing Club and Evansville Boxing Club. Two fighters were able to be matched up in turned out to be one of the biggest shows this city has had. Coach Matt Reed was happy with his fighters citing ‘they did a great job and listened well.’

It was exciting to see so many boxers from the area competing in this amateur location. While the referees where still ‘a little green’ causing several fights to be stopped without cause and standing eight counts by boxers who were still punching and in the fight, we are happy that there is a local venue for our fighters to get a chance to work their skills and learn what it is going to take to get better.

There is nothing like getting in the ring. Local boxing couch Danny Thomas said that ‘it takes a brave and special person to get in that ring. While people in the stands may make fun or laugh, they are not brave enough to step in that ring and prove themselves.”

While our fighters lost by decision and a bad stoppage call by a referee, we are happy to see our fighters do a great job and look to more successful competitions in the near future.

Moving, Testing, and Cool New Things…

As you may know… We will be moving the school location to 605 W. 4th Street in Mount Vernon, IN.

Testing - tonight kids and adult students will be testing over the curriculum of forms, self defense and sparring. Testing starts at 6:30 PM sharp!

Why we are moving - This building was the old MVSD Opportunity Center and now will be the future home of Community Martial Arts! Some people have asked why we are moving. The short and sweet of it is because it was time for a new location with better rent, better utilities and better parking. While we do lose some square footage, we gain in great usable space for all the classes. That means, better alternatives for everyone. It means we can continue our free coffee and cappuccino bar, more training room for students, and a private office to boot. And while many struggled to find a parking spot, our new location has tons of parking space in our very own parking lot.

While the building isn’t separated into separate training floors, we will have to optimize the schedule that will allow everyone convenient times for classes with minimal class disruption. Here is the schedule we have come up with. Please bear in mind it is a tentative schedule and open for change as we tweak our move into the new location.

New Years Resolutions at Community Martial Arts

Welcome to an exciting, eventful and wonderful NEW YEAR at Community Martial Arts…

We are giving away our ‘Weight Loss / Exercise Class’ absolutely free for the month of January. If you are a student, parent, friend or coworker, second cousin-twice removed…. or just anyone, you can get a month of fat burning, fun exercise classes that meet three times a week!!!

I guarantee you will lose 10 pounds by the end of the month!

I also want to let you know how excited we are to launch this new year. While taking a much needed break over the last week, we are ready to go and re-energized. You never know how worn out you really are until you have the chance to take a break.

I spent most of my time at home. Believe it or not, a lot of time was devoted to you. How can I do better? How can I keep challenging you to achieve more? What can I do that will improve your performance and improve your ability to succeed?

These are all questions I considered this year. Believe it or not, I think I have some answers. First and foremost we have some cool new programs to mention…

We started ‘Black Belt Club’ for the the kung fu students but we are going to be extending this on to the Tae Kwon Do class as well. The reason for this is that learning weapons, pressure points and other techniques crosses stylistic boundaries. So, you can learn these cool things as well if you are in the Tae Kwon Do class. We will be finishing introductory broadsword and start teaching Bo Staff/Bong Sool.

Boxing is back! I am very pleased to announce a boxing program is in the works and will begin rather shortly this month. Those who are interested in the boxing program need to see Master Barnes. Our boxing instructor is a golden gloves winner and parent to students in our current martial arts programs. I think he is an excellent choice for instructor and he will provided great instruction to all of our boxers.

While there are more things going on that I would like to mention, I am going to save those for another post.
