Can a man really help a woman in labor? Can birth be drug free? As a Childbirth Educator, Doula and Comfort Therapist, I have had the privilege of being at over 200 births. I started to teach couples the power of birthing comfort techniques over 30 years ago. I was a young mommy myself and my own experience had taught me the miraculous power of my own body.

I believed, grabbed on to, and leaned into the truth that this is my body, my baby, my birth – six times. To my advantage I had an awesome coach/hubby that took his training and position of comforter very serious. He even ended up delivering our second baby all by himself (Ok, I was there too and helped some) because our son came early and in 11.5 minutes! Yes, 11.5 minutes, with a previous labor of 33 hours, and a third birth that was 12 hours, oh wow, barn burner labor. The wonder of it all! Every baby has their own miracle birth story.

It is magical to watch a couple work together in labor. Most people never get to see this or experience it because the majority of couples have no idea how to work together during birth. Even if they attend birth preparation classes most couples do not learn techniques that empower them to efficiently work through the birth process. Yet, these moments, working together towards the birth of their baby, can be the most rewarding, memorable, and create deep ties of love.

I tell couples that out of their intimacy and love this baby was created and out of their intimacy and love they can birth their baby. I share with them empowering comfort techniques: deep comfort relaxation, comfort breathing, comfort imagery, comfort words, comfort touch, and the comfort of understanding the birth process.

I teach Moms how to trust their bodies. I teach Dads information and techniques that the male brain can use. Once men have the “tools” they need to be compassionate and comforting, they do an amazing job. It is so rewarding to watch the Dads transform from uncertain, underpowered, and unknowing to equipped, powerful, loving, comforting partners. His love and compassion has been clinically proven to be as powerful as a narotic for pain relief.

When you teach a couple how to really work together during one of the most demanding physical and emotional times in their life they learn skills they will use forever. Birth is about having a baby, but much more is going on. This is a time when couples can be taught the dance of love, support and comfort. This is the birth of a family.

It is a gift and a treasure to empower and educate couples at this truly precious time in their life. “Babies … what a nice way to start people.”
In fact, it is my greatest joy to be their mother. They are my treasure. It has been my privilege to teach them and raise them to be the wonderful people they have become.

That doesn't mean that mothering is always easy.
It is serious work and you deserve to celebrated.
So download these Mother Day Ideas and enjoy!

You deserve to be appreciated!
Put the Oooh … Aahh into your Mother's Day. Here are some tools to help dads and kids put together a wonderful day just for you. Print out and post these Mother's Day Tip Sheets
and expect the best Mother’s Day ever.

1. Mother’s Favorites:
Help them choose something special just for you. Fill out a list of your favorite things. Sharing your favorite flowers, colors, books, etc, teaches children of all ages that mother is a unique individual with special tastes. It helps them learn that gifts should be chosen with the recipient in mind.

2. Queen for a Day Wish List:

You may love Mother's Day surprises, however don’t be afraid to share your expectations or ideas. Let them know how they can make you feel like Queen for a Day. Print out Queen for a Day and give them some suggestions. Remember husbands and kids can’t read your mind and may be oblivious to the obvious. Click here for Queen for a Day Wish List

3. Give Mom a Day Off:
Sometimes the best gift is a little rest. Print out Mom’s Day Off and make a list of the tasks you usually do. Have everyone sign up to help with a job. They will appreciate it more the next time they see you doing it. The job will probably not be done the way you would do it, but smile and say, “marvelous!” You may want to use this list once a month to teach a task or use it on a catch-up-day.

4. Keep the Magic in Mother’s Day:
Mother’s Day is the busiest day of the year for restaurants. It can take the magic out of Mother’s Day waiting with hungry, fussy children. If you would like to celebrate at a favorite restaurant mention it in time for reservations. Other ideas; a picnic lunch with sandwiches ordered to-go or a special dessert place.

5. Put the Oooh … Aahh in Mother’s Day - Everyday:In the busy life of a mom it is difficult to find time to connect the mind, body, and soul. I have been involved with birthing mothers and new babies for most of my life. There is no greater joy than to be a part of the wonder of birth and the miracle of new life. The plan is for babies to have nine months in the most amazing environment that soothes them and supports their development. However, every year in the USA, 500,000 babies are born before they are ready.

Comfort is the best gift to these tiny babies and their parents. The medical and technology advances in the last decade have increased the chance of survival for even the tiniest of preemies. But the Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) environment and the journey ahead for many of little ones and their parents is not easy. It is hard to imagine the fear, stress, and anxiety that these parents goes through caring for their tiny baby in the NICU.

One in eight babies in America is born early. In the last two decades that rate has increased by 30%. If you know of someone who has had a baby early please think of Comfort Silkie as an avenue of comfort to them. We have designed some special products that bring comfort to both the preemie and their parents.

Often in our high technology world we forget the simple, healing power of comfort.
Our Original Comfort Silkie Security Blanket is used in NICUs across the country to help parents bond with their baby and create a scent connection. The size is just right for tiny little ones and helps parents feel involved and connected with their baby's care.
The brown satin backing that drapes the isolette helps to create a more womb like environment and less stimulation. The inner lining of the cover/blanket helps to buffer the many loud noises that are part of the care area.
Words of comfort have soothing power. This unique cover/blanket is designed to cover the isolette with special messages of love. A pen that can write on our combination of fabrics is included. Later the cover can be used as a comfort blanket for baby and surround baby with words of comfort and love. A precious keepsake.
I just went through 7 days of the flu . . . so now I will comfort you.

If you do not have the flu or do not plan on getting the flu, think of reading these tips for someone you know who is sick. Make up a comfort container and heal them with your love. Fill it with some things I mention and special goodies. Change the world, comfort -by- comfort.

I am OK with being sick - for the first day. Kinda like, this will be a nice rest. And after all, I am sick, maybe watch a movie, catch up on a few things. I'll bounce back tomorrow. But as the flu got worse and I got sicker I realized I am going to be down and out for much longer. So by the 4th day I am crying and moaning and saying "I am sicccck." No one can really hear me because I am sequestered in my room so no one else will get the bug. I wonder if maybe I am dying. I think maybe the combination of comfort flu meds that I am taking to get sleep are making me delusional. I begin to reflect on every bad thought I 've ever had about anyone and start to forgive them to free myself of any emotional toxins. I WANT TO BE WELL. Then to calm myself , I think about all the people that are dealing with life threatening, on-going diseases. I think about how much I admire them and how they cope and ... thank God that this is only the flu.

So here are my flu comfort tips:

Warning: the following may be interrupted with messages of germ phobia in italic.

Get a plastic container to keep all your comfort items close at hand. Use something that is washable, as it will get germy

Here are somethings to put in your container: 1. Kleenex box - the lotion kleenex soothes the nose. Also available with Vicks - wow kleenex has come a long ways. 2. Lip balm in a tube. Stay away from ones you have to stick your finger in and fill up with germs. 3. Roll of paper towels, soft absorbent ones. 4. Water bottle 5. Germicidal Hand Santitizer - get the pump one to you don't have to touch it 6. Medicines 7. Healthy snacks 8. Magazines - throw these way or the next person who reads it will be sick. (My surfer hubby brought me two magazines the first day in the hopes, that having a moment to actually read the gossip mags, would cure me... Sorry honey, see you in 6 days.) 9. Trash bag for all the disgusting snotty tissues.
My favorite flu comforts: Here are some other things I found healing.

Tea Tree Oil. This a wonderful for the sinus and lungs. Use it in steam or inside a mask. Breathe in deep and of course be careful if you are using steam.

Emergen-C. Little packets of vitamins 1,000 C, 24 nutrients and antioxidanta, electrolytes, 7 B vitamins. Dissolves easy and taste fine.

And my Comfort Silkie favorites:All Silkie Throw. I can't sleep without mine.
Triple Hot/Cold Pack. Really helps ease the aches. These are washable and just the comfort you need. Especially when you can't snuggle up to anyone without giving them GERMS.

Healing Comforts:

Back to the Tea Tree Oil ... put a few drops inside the mask and breathe in the healing.

Comfort Eat: When you are healing eat things with only ONE ingredient. In other words fruits and veggies.

Comfort Drink: My favorite healing tea. Guayaki Yerba Mate with 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 amino acids and antioxidants. Lots of yummy favors, organic from South America Rain Forest. And of course, drink lots of water to flush all those germs out.

Important: If you rent a movie, use hand santitizer before and after. EVERYONE who is sick rents movies.

To protect others: When I ventured out of my room I wore a mask and rubber gloves. Sound, over the top? Well, not if you are the mom of a large family. It you spread those germs, you will not get to leave the house for months, as this stuff seems to last forever. It will travel from person to person and you will be taking care of everyone forever.
I found coughing into the mask was very convenient rather that grabbing tissue and snotting around with it. I looked bizarre but I think it really helped. Everyone stayed away from me. You can get 100 masks in a box a the drug store for $8. Hmmm ...I am going to have to figure out some craft to make with the germ masks.

So dear friends, I wish you wellness.
Comfort yourself and be the comfort.
Valentine's Day is not for two more days. But hey, gotta set the mood. I hope the surfer and I are feeling in love on Valentines Day. Other wise ... I will have to fake it. Anyone who is in love or has been in love, knows what I mean. Some days you feel it and some days you don't. That is why marriage is a commitment and not a feeling.

If couples were feeling crazy in love every day nothing would get done. We would all be having sex, eating, and sitting around in ecstasy thinking about how fortunate we are to have each other. The world as we know it would fall apart. Divorce lawyers and therapists would go out of business and the population would explode.

So there in a nutshell is the esoteric reasoning of why ups and downs are normal in all relationships - it is protecting civilization.

When you're wondering, where is the love? Do your part, go with the flow, and help preserve our world. The key to being in love for over three decades, as the surfer and I are: is being kind and patient as you figure out not, where is the love . . . but how to be love.

Be love and Do Comfort. Here are some tips:
Do Touch: A comforting touch can melt the heart. Hold hands, snuggle, put your arm around each other, send the message, this isn't about sex, it is about loving you. Hot!
Do Talk: Do know your loves' hopes, dreams and deepest fears. How do start talking about these things? Say you want to know. The surfer and I make a list and and share out loud. You maybe surprised. Then you can dream together and help each other feel safe.
Do Tell: What do you appreciate about each other? Say it often and mention it in front of others.
Do Time: Take time each day to pull each other close, look in each others eyes, and connect. After all, this person is THE most important person in your life. Make them feel like it.

Three decades and six kids later . . . I can tell you this works.
Do Comfort and Be the Love.

Where is the love, y'all come on
Where is the love, y'all come on
Father, Father, Father help us. Send us some guidance from above
Where is the love? The love, the love.

BE THE LOVE

New Year Expectations

*Some posts from January were not published. Here they are. Enjoy!*
Beginnings and endings all happen in January. I always begin the year with new ideas and agendas. It feels so comforting to have a whole year full of time ahead of me.

Well, it is almost the end of January ... this is when the wheels begin to fall off of many of my creative ideas for the new year. Reality sets in that good ideas actually have to be executed (I like that word, can we think of it in terms of kill?)

So, I begin a lot of things and end a lot of things in January. It is a very busy month for me.

Last year, I told all my kids I was going to do a Monday Mom Email every week and tell them inspiring and wise things that mothers should tell their children. The first one (I don't mean to brag) was amazing - really life changing. I am pretty sure they read it.
I was really into it. I planned to email the very next Monday but entropy happened and happened and happened. So about midyear, not to rush things, I sent one out again and told them the Mom Email was now bi-yearly. I also informed them that they might have to find ways to be wise and inspired on their own. Recently, I let them know that due to my schedule, I had restructured the Mondays Mom Email to an annual event and I couldn't give them an exact timing on it.

Yes, I totally believe in adjusting your expectations as the year rolls on ... and sooner if needed.

Comfort tip #1 : Relax, it's OK to restart, re-adjust, renew, let go, restart, rethink, re-evaluate, restart, or NOT. Take it day-by-day. You have over 300 restarts left. It is comforting to have a whole year ahead of you - enjoy.

New Year Weight Loss Idea

*Some posts from January were not published. Here they are. Enjoy!*

New Year weight loss idea and more ... I am so sick of reading and hearing about how to lose those last 10 - 20 pounds. You get a load of ideas in January on this subject. Everyone has actually enjoyed eating over the Holidays. So we tend to pack on a few extra pounds. I like to read all the suggestions, organize them all, make plans about them, and join all the websites. I usually begin to eat a lot of comfort food the third week in January BECAUSE ... I am so discouraged that joining websites, organizing, and planning does not burn enough calories to lose ONE darn pound.

Comfort Tip - For Weight Loss:

Get a Pedometer. Go today. I just got one.
Get the one that clips on your belt. The guy at the Big Five Sporting store told me that is more accurate than the pocket one.
I have to tell you . . . this so beats counting your steps on your own.
Get the one that counts how many calories you are burning, too. It is around $15 and so cool.
Warning: It may be discouraging as you will find out that is takes A LOT of steps to burn that Starbucks scone you had for breakfast.
But seriously, it just subliminally reminds you: if you can't burn it, don't eat it. You will have to store it somewhere.
At this moment I have walked 2,948 steps, .93 of a mile, and burned, yes, fired through, blasted through, 115 calories.

Gotta go, it's lunch time.

Hmmm, haven't burned off my breakfast yet.
Note to self: google; delicious, zero-calorie lunch options

Blame Your Mess on Physics

Definition: Entropy is the quantitative measure of disorder in a system.

I just love the word ENTROPHY. Say it with me . . . e-n-t-r-o-p-y.

It sounds comforting. Try this: say it with a little sing-song sound to it eennntttrrropppy.

Now try shouting it ENTROPYYYY - doesn't that feel good? Ok, again louder.

Now give me an entropy cheer. Give me an E, give me a N, give me a T, give me a R, give me O, give me a P, give me a Y, ENTROPY.

And now let's sing it in round to the tune of America the Beautiful. I'll start and when I point, you begin.
Ennnntttrooopppy, wonderful entropy. I am pointing; Ok, now la,la,la

So in the time you have read this . . . . your kitchen has become messier, your bedroom more untidy, your kids more unorganized AND it is not your fault. That is why ENTROPY is so freeing! Have you ever wondered why you have to clean up messes all day long and it seems like they are the same messes you just cleaned. Blame it on ENTROPY. Entropy is the natural law of physics that states when things are left to themselves they turn to chaos.

I was so delighted when I found out about entropy. I finally understood the universe code and physic law that had kept my life in disarray. I also understood why it was a uphill battle to keep things in order.

So, don't be so hard on yourself. When your life is a mess, take comfort in entropy and blame it on physics.

Here are some important tips to free yourself from the entropy cycle:

SORT: Before starting ... tell yourself sorting is good and that you love to sort. Get some new, colorful sorting containers. Put on your favorite sorting music. Buy a new sorting outfit.

THROW THINGS AWAY: Be ruthless. You do not want to end up on the Hoarding TV show.
So, if it is moldy, too small, stained, ripped, or ugly - throw it out. Or give it to a good friend who is a hoarder.

So, there you go.
That's it. That's all I've got.
Ennnttrrrooppyyy, la, la, la, Ennnttrrrooppyyy.

Oops, gotta go look for my cell phone and keys.

I just called to say, "I love you."

*We're working on switching our blog and some posts were not published. Here's some from January. Enjoy!*

Today I am wearing my father's sweater. I always reach for it when I have a big project with a deadline or just feeling a little down. It immediately brings me a sense of comfort. The feel and color of it reminds me of his warm smile and his blue eyes.

This rather ordinary sweater carries the soothing memories of a dad that gave me a foundation of comfort and security.
As I write this, I smile to remember all the times he called our office during my work day.

In fact, almost everyday someone would yell . . . "Your dad's on the line."

Hi Dad, how are you doing? He'd tell me he was fine and some other random tidbit like; he'd just emptied the dishwasher. Or some disgusting, important senior fact like: he'd had a bowel movement. Ok, Dad that's good. Well, gotta keep working, thanks for calling. And then he'd say, "I just called to say, I love you." Ok, Dad, I love you, too.

Often I was rushed, distracted, and uh,uh,ok, ya, Dad. See you soon.

He passed away a couple years ago. I miss his calls.

So today, I wear his sweater and wrap up in his words.

Thanks Giving

Wishing for you the joy of a Thankful Heart.
I am especially thankful for all of you who have ordered Comfort Silkie and shared the gift of comfort this past year. A zillion, trillion thanks to you.

Here is my recipe for joy while you are cooking up your Thanksgiving. Slow down, take a moment to breathe in the day. Take a comfort moment because the ingredients of life should be mixed slowly to produce the best finished product. Learn to have a thankful heart: by choosing to appreciate with gratefulness each tiny goodness life offers you.

This has been a difficult year for many people and yet we have so much to be thankful for. Last week I was feeling weary and decided to be thankful for the little things in my life. As Greg and I were leaving for a work day at Comfort Silkie I said, "I am at 52." Greg looks at me and says, "52 what?" I replied, "I have counted 52 things to be thankful for this morning." Pointing to my succulent garden in the front yard I announced, "53, and I have a car, so 54," and on it goes being thankful for things I take for granted everyday.

When our kids were little and they would start complaining I would begin the "Glad Game". It was a competition to think of as many things to be glad about as possible. A competition of any kind in a big family is a great distraction but the Glad Game always refocused our hearts.

As we gather with family and friends, think of the Mary Engelbreit poster that says "Let's put the fun back in dysfunction!" Smile, laugh, eat, and spend time enjoying the little differences and idiosyncrasies that make the people around you interesting. Appreciate the people in your life. The person sitting next to you may not be with you next year. Tell them today how thankful you are they are in your life.

I liked everything about last year's Thanksgiving blog so we thought we'd share it again this year.
I love Thanksgiving.
Gathering my family and enjoying a beautiful meal together makes me crazy grateful. I usually can’t contain myself so I break into song. My kids start to groan but they know I won’t stop until they join in. As a mom, I try to instill in them thankful hearts. Gratefulness is learned, not just in response to receiving, but a celebration of life. It is easy to become burdened with the day to day and forget to savor, yes savor, life’s moments.

Here are some of Troncone Thanksgiving traditions:
Five Kernels of Corn: When the table is set for the Thanksgiving meal every plate has 5 kernels of corn. They represent the Pilgrims struggle the year before the plenty and celebration of Thanksgiving. According to tradition, the Pilgrims suffered through a two year famine with a food ration of five kernels per day. When we compare the meal about to be served to the five kernels we can’t help but be thankful for our blessings.

Thankful Memories: Over the years I have had a Thanksgiving book that we pass and note our gratefulness. We pass the book, even writing for the small ones and letting them scribble their names. It is fun to look back and see, from old to young, the comments they made.

At our family Thanksgiving it is tradition to pass the acorn and tell what each individual is thankful for. We also say one thing we are praying and hoping for this next year. Sharing each others joys and carrying each others burdens – it's what makes families strong.

For Stuffing Lovers: Yes, that is me. You must try this. When preparing your stuffing for the turkey: add chopped walnuts, apple bits, and golden raisins to the bread crumb recipe. Oh, so good!

Pumpkins Bars: I always make this yummy dessert during Thanksgiving. This disease has touched all of our lives in one way or another. It can be difficult to know how to help, express comfort, and bring hope.
That is why we are so proud of Comfort Silkie's Hope line because it brings the powerful gift of comfort.
I just get nestled in, enjoying the season and then it is over before I am ready. I am excited about what is up ahead but, oh dear . . . wait a minute; life is rushing by too fast. Feel the same? Ok then, breathe with me ... deep comfort breathe in through the nose, breathe in slow and deep, breathing in the relaxation and comfort. Slowly release, tension and anxiety with outward breathe through the mouth, release tension in the shoulders, again slowly breathe in comfort and strength, and breathe out stress. Can you feel your body resetting and responding to the rhythm and gentle rocking of the breathing?

Ok, where were we?
I counted about six really sunny days. Maybe I am low on vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, because I am just not ready, mentally or emotionally, for summer to be over. How about you? More breathing? Wrap up in your Comfort Silkie blanket. I already grabbed mine. Take a comfort moment. Close your eyes and think of the your favorite summer moment. Let it soak into your soul and fill you with thankfulness.

Head to Toes Women's Expo in Del Mar – I spoke at their Baby Shower each day and shared Doula tips for pregnancy, labor, and new baby comforts. It was a girls' time out. Women just wanna have fun - even when they're very pregnant. Comfort Silkie donated Mama labor products and of course our original Security Blanket and Swaddler for baby comforts.
It was a beautiful rendition of “Row, row, row, your boat gently down the stream, life is but a dream” - in round! I have to say, we are not ready to take it on road, but we did release some serious endorphins and comfort joy.
Comfort Silkie Pillow: "My son loved his original comfort silkie so much I bought him the Comfort Silkie Pillow. He loves it so much and wants to hold it all the time. The pillow is so soft and very comfortable - a must have!" - J. Shea
Original Comfort Silkie Bonding Security Blanket: This little blanket is wonderful. My son loves it! He goes to sleep so easily (8 months old now) and I think that it's in part due to this blanket. He rubs it all over his face, sucks on it, plays little peek-a-boo games with it, and even sleeps with it. Since he was a tiny baby I have felt very comfortable leaving him to sleep with his blanket because it is small enough and light enough weight. I'm so happy with the Comfort Silkie that I'm ordering a second one for Toby and a couple to give as gifts. - G. Payzant
My son, who is 11 months now, searches the house for his Comfort Silkie "lovie" before napping or going to sleep at night. He loves it, much to my surprise. It is the only thing he has an attachment to. He chews on it while falling asleep and it is perfect to cover him with since he doesn't like blankets of any sort. I am ordering an identical one as a back up. He is a boy's boy and this Comfort Silkie is standing up to the challenge and staying intact. Highly recommend." - V. Kenney
They sleep with them (they are 4 now!) and play with them all the time. They wrap up THEIR babydolls in them! The Comfort Silkies are very durable and are just now starting to fray on the edges. They are the perfect size to take anywhere. I would highly recommend this product. Great baby gift!" - R. Kippley
My only grand daughter is almost 15 and entering highschool at a prestigious girls' school in Dallas. She goes to sleepovers alot, and obviously, takes her blue and while Creme Baby Fur Big Baby blanket with her that I gave her last year. Today, a classmate and her mother came in to buy a baby gift for a former teacher and specifically asked for "the blanket Ali had when she spent the night- the softest blanket she had ever touched." This was for a baby gift, but her mother sensed her own 14 year old daughter wanted one too-hence we sold two. Just had to let you know how special these blankets are, even to highschoolers. I have a feeling we will sell more to these girls-so much for "just babies". Print out Mom’s Day Off and make a list of the tasks you usually do and have them sign up to help. They will appreciate it more the next time they see you doing it. No fair letting things pile up for the day after Mother’s Day. The job will probably not be done the way you would do it, but smile and say “marvelous”! You may want to use this list once a month to teach a task or use it on a catch-up-day.
There is comfort in the ongoing cycle of seasons. Each season signals its time of year and brings with it things we love and find similar. The comfort and wonder in the thought that someone greater than ourself has organized this wonderful symphony and cycle of life.

Embrace Spring and consider these life comfort moments:
This is the season for a dream that has laid dormant to bud forth. As a child I remember the joy of seeing the first purple crocus bursting forth from the snow to announce Spring. I think this season, that is so full of new beginnings, is meant to remind us to dream and hope for blessings yet to come. Even if it has been a long, stormy winter; Spring is on its way.

So dare to write down one dream this Spring and how you might make your dream a reality in 2010.

May dreams and joy spring forth in your life.
May you be the kindness that awakens hope in others.
My reality turned out a little different. All you moms know what I mean.

So here we are the last week in February and I hope you have had a month full of love and wellness.

I still have a few days to write my favorite Yummy Cookie Recipe which I make for Valentine Day. You can make these cookies in any shape for any holiday. Are the cookies good for your heart ??? - Not sure, but I know this - they are very yummy and comforting. You can use this recipe and cut the shape of three leaf clover and frost green for St. Patrick's Day.

So the love thing ... think of someone who might need to be loved and give some sweetness. The ingredients may have sugar and butter but if you give them with love it cancels calories and fats. Well, ok maybe not, but giving is definitely good for the heart. "We are given two hands. One to receive with and one to give with"
Giving is good for the heart!
Be blessed until the next blog.
I found myself waiting apprehensively for my ticker to find its rightful rhythm. I completely missed a Christmas blog. I had so much to share but life has been a little overwhelming. I can’t wait until next year to share with you all my Christmas Comforts. The reality is we are already well into January, oh yes, reality . . . so let’s focus on the surprises and the blessings of the New Year.

We shared with many of you that we had lost our lease on the building we had been in for 12 years. The news couldn’t have come at a worst time with the fragile economy and our retailers struggling. The future for Comfort Silkie was uncertain and we were looking for the Plan. (Jeremiah 29:11). We shared that uncertainty with you and . . .you were wonderful! You sent in your heartfelt and lovely responses. It truly felt like Comfort Silkie family. It made me feel like I wanted to have a Comfort Silkie family picnic and just have everyone get together. We could express our gratefulness to you and you could share your stories.

Oh the sweet comfort of new beginnings.

We probably never would have moved and now we have. It was a huge job and just this week we have phone lines and internet. Yeah! Our shipping opened last week and we are settling in and enjoying the new place. I have to tell you though, it was a nail biter right to the last minute. We had to be out of our original building December 31st. We were uncertain whether we could financially make the move until December 22. On December 23 we had to execute the lease and have the keys to the new warehouse in one day. The brokers for the building were leaving for the Holidays and would not be back until January 4th. Five minutes before they closed for Christmas we completed the lease and received the keys.

Then came the move. Exhausting, overwhelming, grueling, tearful, are a few words to describe the last couple of weeks. It was one of those times where you just put one foot in front of the other and keep going because so much has to be done. But in the midst of those emotions, that came because of the enormity of the job, was also the wonderful joy of knowing that Comfort Silkie could continue to bring comfort. So many of you had expressed how much our products meant to you and how much you wanted us to continue. You cheered us on with your words and your Christmas orders. A zillion thank yous!

Comfort Wisdom: The New Year stretches out before us with its joys and disappointments. Treasure the moments and enjoy the ride.

A few years back our family was going to Magic Mountain Amusement Park. The kids were thrilled and especially looking forward to the wet and wild rapids ride. As for me, as soon as we got there my mother instinct OCD “protect your children from all things wet and cold” kicked into high gear. I began planning at what time we should go on this ride. Timing was critical because if they all got wet too early or late I would be walking around with wet kids all day. I had to time the ride for sufficient warmth and drying time. Of course they probably wouldn’t minded slogging around but I knew they would have their death of cold. So, when the sun was at its best I began to yell . . . "it is time, it is time, get in line, get in line ... now!" I had everyone take off their socks so I could keep them dry. At least they would have dry socks in their wet shoes. I also, being the ever prepared mom, brought out the plastic trash bags I brought to cover up with. This brought immediate groans and screams of “dorky”. I personally thought it was a great idea and was sure every other mother in line was admiring my preparedness.

As we waited in line the kids and Greg were ecstatic. Yes, the wetter the better. Me, I was looking at the sopping wet people come off the ride and worrying about all the water that was already in the circular, bucket thing we were climbing into. The ride begins, the kids are screaming with joy. Greg is laughing. Me, I am busy trying to keep the trash bags over myself and our youngest and anyone else who will let me. The kids are drenched and loving it. I am holding on for dear life as they try to direct the plummeting barrel into every rapid and waterfall.

Suddenly, the ride slows and comes to a halt. We all pile out of the bucket, the kids are thrilled and jumping up and down and begging to go again. I am looking at them in their complete abandonment and joy. And it strikes me - I completely missed the ride.

I was so busy trying to stay dry and control the ride I completely missed the fun of it. I gathered myself up, ditched the plastic bags (well ok, I kept one to sit on) and let go; screamed, raised my arms, leaned into to the splash, and had a great time getting wet.

Comfort Lesson: I had the opportunity to go on this amusement ride again and enjoy the moment. But in real life, - if I miss the moment, it will be gone.

Comfort Wisdom: We’ll only go around once. Expect to get wet, make yourself comfortable with the uncomfortable, and … enjoy the ride.

From the Mother of Comfort: When life seems scary, uncomfortable, and unpredictable, don’t hold on too tight and miss the ride. Enjoy the moment. HAPPY NEW YEAR,

The best of New Beginnings -
my new grandbaby Laylie.

Troncone Thanksgiving Traditions

The Acorn Theory: An oak tree produces many acorns and those acorns produce more oak trees.

Chopped walnuts are a nice topping to the cream cheese frosting. You can double this recipe or make multiple batches and do up plates to bring to neighbors and friends. See recipe below.

Pumpkin Bars Recipe: Oven 350
2 cups flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. baking soda
2 cups sugar
1 cup oil
4 eggs, beaten slightly
2 cups pumpkin

Combine in bowl in order given. As a Comfort Therapist and founder of Comfort Silkie company I design products and education that empower parents to soothe their babies in the NICU. For the past two decades, bringing comfort to precious preemies and their parents has been our mission. The NICU can be an intimidating and heart rendering environment. Simple comfort techniques make life-long emotional markers for both baby and parents. Comfort Silkie’s Original patented Security Blanket is recommended by Neonatologists and NICU Nurses around the country to enhance bonding and create a scent connection. This small comfort blanket is designed with special features that soothe: The cuddly flannel feels like soft skin and the silkie satin feels like the fluid within the womb. The small, light weight size is easy to work with and easily absorbs parent’s unique comfort scent. The Comfort Silkie encourages normal nurturing interaction and help parents feels connected and close to baby. The Comfort Silkie encourages self comfort behaviors that will continue with baby’s ongoing care and development.

Additional Preemie recommended products: The Silkie Nest: Provides soft boundaries and silkie comfort touch. Lisa and I were there to celebrate her newly released book, “The Internet Mommy.” We ate, laughed, and basked in the wonderfulness of online Moms. Kimberley’s Internet Mommy book is an enjoyable, inspirational, and educational read. In fact, it inspired me to begin seriously blogging - immediately. Ok, as immediately as it gets when your life is as crazy as mine, the event was last Thursday. So here I am blogging away at Comfort Silkie in the hopes of becoming as cool as the amazing moms I met that night. Read “The Internet Mommy” and you will be inspired too.

Kimberley’s book tells their stories of “how social networks influence the way moms make money, view life, find friends, and raise kids.” I will share more about these ladies who work and play online as we are now BFFs. (I hope they remember who I am....as there was an open bar).

Photos:
1.
