Horns Ranked 2nd, Plus A Real BCS Busting Scenario

The third week of the BCS Rankings for 2009 have been released and show that Texas' performance this past weekend was enough to move them into the number 2 spot, slightly ahead of Alabama. Colt's performance against Oklahoma State, 16-21 (76.2%) for 171 yards with 1 TD, was enough to keep him in the Heisman discussions, but not enough for him to stand out from the rest of the pack. He did have plenty of support to help the Horns squash any hopes the Cowboys may have had of an upset in Stillwater. With 4 interceptions by the defense (2 run back for touchdowns), the Longhorns now have a nation-leading 9 non-offensive touchdowns this season. The offense was slow to start this year, but the past two weeks have shown that they can get the job done. And the defense and special teams are, without question, championship-caliber.

The next few weeks will feel like scrimmages to keep the Horns from getting out of practice between now and Pasadena. The remaining schedule consists of Central Florida (not Atlantic), a Robert Griffin-less Baylor, a disappointing Kansas, and an up and down Aggie team. Assuming the Longhorns come away unscathed by that run of unimpressive opponents, they'll play the best of the worst, er, the best of the Big 12 North (Kansas State? Nebraska? Possibly even Iowa State?). If Florida and Alabama finish out the regular season without a loss, they'll play each other in the SEC Championship for a shot at Texas in the MNC.

Interested in a fun scenario? Let's say Alabama gets upset by the LSU Tigers this weekend, but LSU goes on the lose one more (possibly Ole Miss or Arkansas). Then, one-loss Alabama beats Florida in the SEC Championship game. Who will Texas play in the National Championshp? Iowa, if they can beat Ohio State. If not, Cincinatti? TCU? Boise State? Talk about potential BCS Busting.

McCoy Struggles Against OU, Rebounds At Mizzou

But he leads the Horns to victories in both games. Against Oklahoma, Colt threw 21 completions in 39 attempts (only 53.8%) for 127 yards with a single touchdown and an interception. He also ran for 33 yards and lost a fumble. This past weekend, though, Colt went 26-31 for 269 yards with 3 touchdowns and a pick. He also rushed for 13 yards. His struggles against OU dropped him out of the top 5 in the Heisman Pundit's Poll, but he moved back up to number 3 this week. He'll need to consistently play like he did last weekend if he wants a trip to New York in December.

In a season without any individuals breaking away from the crowd as the Heisman favorite, Colt's early season struggles will be easily forgotten if he can wow voters with an impressive second half of the season. The Horns upcoming schedule should, for the most part, give him that chance. The game this weekend in Stillwater will be aired at 7pm Central on ABC, giving the Horns their third consecutive week of a national broadcast. After this weekend, currently unranked Kansas should be the only team that will likely put up a fight against the Longhorns. Closing out the regular season in College Station on Thanksgiving, Colt will have the opportunity to pad his stats against the currently 98th ranked defense in the country.

The Big XII title, the National Championship, and the Heisman Trophy are all within grasp of the Horns and Colt McCoy as of now. The first two should fall in line with an unblemished record, while the last will take continued stellar performances by Colt MyBoy.

TX-OU Week 2009

It's finally here. The Red River Rivalry. It doesn't have quite the hype that was hoped for when the season started, due to some key injuries to Oklahoma which arguably resulted in two one-point losses in non-conference play. But despite what the national media may tell you, this game is still as big as it gets. Throw out rankings and records and Heisman candidacies - this is the most important game of the regular season. OU has little to no chance of playing in the MNC, but beating Texas will put them on the fast track to their 4th consecutive Big 12 Conference Title. And Texas, well, their destiny is in their own hands right now. Colt McCoy can make or break his Heisman campaign in this game, and Jordan Shipley can try to get some lovin' by the national media with a big return or two.

But who am I kidding? This probably won't be a big offensive game for McCoy or Bradford. This game will come down to two things: Defense and Mistakes. Whichever team plays better defense and makes fewer mistakes will come out on top. Turnovers will be key, as they are every year in this rivalry game. Both defenses are stout and should play outstanding. I do give Texas a slight edge, though. OU's D-Line is better than UT's O-Line, but the Longhorn D-Line has an even bigger advantage over the Sooner O-Line. If Texas can protect the ball make a big play here and there, they should pull away with a two score victory.

(Take that prediction with a grain of salt, however, as I picked 7 games last week and only got 2 right. Ouch. Hopefully I'll do better only picking one game this weekend!)

College Football - Week 6 Preview

#1 Florida @ #4 LSU
Heisman favorite Tim Tebow is a gametime decision for what will likely be the biggest game of this weekend. LSU has struggled against teams that don't even compare to Florida, but this is a night game in Death Valley. Whether John Brantley starts for the Gators or a less than 100% Tebow gets the go, expect a close game. I think LSU will play up to their competition and take advantage of Tebow's recent injury with a nice defensive game.

Florida 17
LSU 24

#2 Texas vs. Colorado
The Buffaloes held their own against West Virginia, but let's be honest - Colorado is just not a good team this year. Last December, head coach Dan Hawkins predicted 10 wins for 2009. With 1 win under their belt and 8 games to go (they'll be lucky to be favored in 3 of them), Danny's lucky he's got an expensive contract that will keep him around for a few more years. Look for Mack Brown to use the Buffs as an opportunity to prepare for Oklahoma and pad some stats.

Colorado 3
Texas 56

#3 Alabama @ #20 Mississippi
Jevan Snead had a good start to the season, but seemingly collapsed when he faced the only team with a defense worth mentioning (South Carolina). Can he lead the Rebels to an upset victory over one of the best teams in the nation? Doubtful. Expect Bama to roll (Tide) right over Ole' Miss. This has the potential to be a really good game, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Alabama 31
Mississippi 14

A few more predictions for the weekend:

Michigan over #12 Iowa
#17 Auburn over Arkansas
Florida State over #22 Georgia Tech
Georgia over Tennessee

Clausen joins McCoy, Tebow this week

Since the first preseason release of ESPN's Heisman Watch, Tim Tebow has led with Colt McCoy in second. But every week of football, the number 3 slot has changed. The flavor of the week this week? Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen. He definitely deserves to be there, given his stats so far this year: 100/148 (67.6%) for 1,544 years with 12 TDs and 2 INTs. Luckily for him, this week is a bye week. So while he should stay there for at least one more week, the Fighting Irish will be playing against Southern Cal next weekend. My prediction? Tony Pike of Cincinnati or Case Keenum of Houston will move up into the number 3 slot after USC has their way with the over-hyped Fighting Irish. (This of course assumes Texas wins their big game that same day...)

In this week's Heisman Watch, Tebow has a 72-58 lead over McCoy. After the Longhorns play the struggling Colorado Buffaloes and injured Tebow may or may not play against No. 4 LSU, that may change next week. If Florida pulls out the win, I think Tebow will still lead the pack, but not by much. If the Tigers upset the Gators, look for a new leader on the Heisman Watch...
