There was a shakeup in the top three this week. Trinity defeated Princeton 7-2 and then Princeton beat Yale 8-1.  This created a triangle due to Yale’s victory over Trinity a few weeks ago. By CSA ranking procedure, the individual match victories were totaled to decide the top-three ranking positions: Trinity – 11 individual matches, Princeton – 10 individual matches, and Yale – 6 individual matches.

Navy defeated Western Ontario, 5-4, to move the Midshipmen to 12th in the nation.

The NESCAC tournament helped sort out the ranking conundrum for the 19th to 24th ranking positions.

The following teams were removed from the rankings due to “Not on Roster” players in their match results:  Boston University, Illinois Springfield, Lafayette, Northwestern, and USC. Each of these teams received multiple warnings. They will reenter the rankings in the ranking cycle after they enter the players in the US Squash scoring system for the matches with “Not on Roster” players.

In the women’s tournament,  Bates College finished as the runners-up. The Bobcats defeated Bowdoin in the quarterfinals to face Williams in the semifinals.  Bates defeated Williams 5-4 to advance to the finals.

In the quarterfinal match, Bowdoin’s Torey Lee and Bates’ Nessrine Ariffin played the match at the #1 position. Both players are first-year students and will likely face each other numerous times each season for the next few years.  At the NESCAC Championships, Ariffin won in three games (11-6, 11-3, and 11-3).

Palo Alto, California — After previous trips to San Diego and Miami, the Dartmouth men’s and women’s teams took their talents to Stanford’s beautiful campus just outside of San Francisco. After a stressful finals period, the squads were keen on getting back into playing shape and spending quality time together before breaking off for the holidays. Following a full day of traveling, both teams arrived at SFO International before heading to the Sheraton Palo Alto, our residence for the week.

The Sheraton is located about a mile away from the Arrigalla Sports Center where the Stanford courts are housed. Each day we passed the Stanford football stadium and training facilities, getting pumped to train on the same grounds once graced by John Elway, Tiger Woods, and John McEnroe. We kicked off the trip with some dual match scrimmages at the Stanford courts. The women played Stanford’s varsity team and the men played the Stanford club team and a collection of local all-stars. We were welcomed with open arms by the Stanford teams, coaches (legends Mark Talbot and Richard Elliot), and community players. Our first day was a great way to get acquainted with the facilities and transition into an intense and fun week of training.

Our coaches did an excellent job of keeping each session unique and challenging. We truly worked every part of our bodies through a series of on-court sessions, morning runs, lifts, beach volleyball games, basketball scrimmages, and pool workouts. Each day had a similar structure: the morning session began with on-court drills followed by one of the many off-court activities. The afternoon session followed in the same manner, with more emphasis on match play and conditioned games. Three days of this physically draining activity was rewarded, as midway through the week the team took a day off to explore San Francisco.

We wound down Lombard Street in a series of vans, one of which co-captain Brian O’Toole ’12 impressively maneuvered through San Francisco’s hilly topography. Once we arrived at Fisherman’s Wharf, Jack Barrett ’12 displayed his knowledge of the secret menu at In-N-Out Burger. After some delicious burgers and shakes, different packs of each team broke off to navigate the city on their own. Julia Watson ’12 and Heather Binnie ’12 led a group of women on a trolley to Union Square. The council of six seniors on the men’s team made sure to check out SF’s Chinatown: the largest Chinatown outside of Asia. At the end of the day, both teams were further rewarded during a trip to the Olympic Club in downtown San Francisco. We got to spend quality time with ex-men’s captain Daniel Wagman ’10 and enjoy the impressive facilities the club had to offer. A Dartmouth hybrid team consisting of men’s and women’s players duked it out against the OC’s top club players. We would like to thank Jeff Young and the Olympic Club staff for their hospitality and kindness.

Though the second half of the trip followed in similar structure to the first half of training, we did have time for some fun and relaxation before heading home.

One of the highlights of the trip was the one-point tournament, in which members of both teams competed for the ultimate bragging rights. Though Marian Lurio ’15 staged a valiant effort on behalf of the women’s team making it to the quarterfinals, New Jersey natives and former junior training partners Brian O’Toole and Alex Kurth ’13 ended up playing for the title. Alex’s flair and tank top were ultimately no match for BOT’s patience. After the tournament, Hansi and Busani surprised us with a yoga session administered by Stanford’s head yoga trainer over an elaborate intercom system throughout the center’s massive mat room. Though her hypnotic relaxation methods had half of us snoozing by the end of the session, we found the energy to celebrate two of the trip’s most important events by the end of the day: Chris Hanson’s ’13 and Steve Wetherill’s ’12 birthdays.

All in all, the trip was a great way for us to build a fitness base and stay sharp over the break and all the while spend precious time with our teams away from the busyness of college life. We would like to thank Mark Talbot, the Olympic Club, and the Palo Alto community for welcoming us to their home for the week. Though the seniors will sorely miss the annual training trips, the younger players can now look forward to cherishing each training trip and its traditions for years to come. Both teams look forward to continue to build on the work and memories established on the trip as we head into the final weeks of the season. Go Green!

On Wednesday, Princeton’s men visited Trinity. The Bantams defended their #2 ranking position with a 7-2 win, which included a 5-game victory at the #1 position by Vikram Malhotra over Princeton’s Todd Harrity (9-11, 11-7, 4-11, 11-4, and 11-9).  Princeton returned to New Jersey to host top-ranked Yale on Saturday. The Tigers staked their claim on the Ivy League title by defeating the Bulldogs 8-1. There will be a new top-ranked team in the men’s ranking this week. The Yale women defeated Princeton.

The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championships were held at Trinity and Wesleyan this weekend. In men’s action, the upsets came in the first round. Wesleyan avenged a recent loss to Hamilton with a 6-3 victory. Conn College, seeded 10th, defeated #7 seed Colby 5-4.  Williams faced Trinity in the finals, but the Bantams proved too much, winning 9-0.

In women’s action, all the seedings remained intact.  Bates reached its first NESCAC finals. The Bobcats faced Trinity. The Bantams captured the match 9-0.

Mount Holyoke captured its sixth-straight Seven Sisters crown this weekend.  The Lyons went 3-0 with victories over Vassar, Smith, and Wellesley. Wellesley and Smith battled for second. Despite the 7-2 score, the match was extremely close. In the end, Wellesley won.

On Saturday, the Naval Academy defeated Western Ontario for the first time in program history. This win may significantly change the seeding for the Hoehn Cup (B division) at the Men’s National Team Championships.

On Sunday, the Penn women narrowly lost to Yale 4-5.  Penn defeated Stanford and Brown on the weekend. The Penn men defeated Brown, but lost to Yale.

At the event, Haverford went 0-4. The Black Squirrels played Hobart, Wesleyan, Colby, and Conn. Despite the 0-9 scores, Haverford was in the matches.

Hobart went 2-2 with victories over Haverford and Vassar. The Statesman lost to Wesleyan and Amherst.

The match at the number one position featured Haverford’s Alex Spiliotes and Hobart’s Corey Kabot. Both players are seniors and co-captains of their respective teams. Kabot won the match in 3 games (11-6, 11-6, and 11-9)

Trinity jumped up two positions to 3rd after defeating Penn 5-4. The 3, 4, and 5 positions going into Howe Cup should be determined by the February 11th match between Princeton and Trinity.

Bowdoin defeated George Washington to move George Washington down to 19th.

Smith, William Smith, and Wellesley defeated Vassar.  Wellesley moved to 24th, William Smith to 25th, and Smith to 26th.  The Seven Sisters tournament, which will be played this weekend, will include rematches for Smith,Vassar, and Wellesley.

Kathryn Brummer (Mount Holyoke College): At the Maine Event, the Mount Holyoke junior captain went 4-0. She recorded 3-0 victories at the #6 position against Bowdoin’s Sara Wlodarczyk, George Washington’s Tiffany Hingley, and Colby’s Elizabeth Brehman. Against Bates, the Lyons’ sole team loss of the weekend, Brummer defeated the Bobcats’ Chloe Mitchell, which included a thrilling 11-9 victory in the 5th game (6-11, 3-11, 11-7, 11-9, and 11-9).

Caleb Garza (Conn College): Playing number 1 for Conn College, Garza, the Camels’ junior captain, went 3-0 on the weekend with victories over Fordham, Columbia, and Middlebury. Against Columbia and Middlebury, he won two four-game matches against the Lions’ Graham Miao (9-11, 11-7, 11-4, and 11-6) and the Panthers’ Valentin Quan (9-11, 11-6, 11-4, and 12-10). On the weekend, the Camels’ sole team victory was against Fordham.
