You can be excited to remain in the conference, but are you going to be excited to remain in a conference that is getting schools that are from even smaller conferences? I think the upper tier of Southern Conference schools are looking for lifelines now. This is the same reasoning behind why UConn and Cincinnati want out of the America Athletic Conference at the first opportunity they can get. It is a difficult situation for all conferences involved. As far as Division II upgrades go, the expenses are great and it may not be worth it for many schools. Extra scholarships in all sports, extra travel budgets for the longer trips even though they might get more revenue, and some conferences are too busy trying to remain in tact and not in a position to handle transitioning schools.

The merry go round continues to spin. Ultimately I think there will be one less conference to generate one more at large bid for the NCAA tournament for the big boys. They nearly succeeded in destroying the WAC and if things continue they still could disappear. These latest moves are going to change Division I-AA football as well (Yes I know it is officially FCS football, but I find the absurd and refuse to acknowledge it). The Southern Conference used to be a power in football, but not longer will that be the case with their best schools leaving. The CAA is looking to maintain its football prowess and if Albany does join for all sports, possibly followed by Stony Brook the conference will be pretty strong football wise and eventually get strong basketball wise. Hofstra can try and block Stony Brook all they want, but they could find themselves in a tug of war with football schools, which they dropped as a sport, and lose handily. In my opinion, Hofstra needs to accept the fact the CAA wants to remain viable in football and they have no say in that. They are lucky they still have a conference home and could find their resistance stance costing them a home. Hofstra is not Duke, or Texas, or whatever school they think they are and having more northern schools would be a good idea for reducing travel and generating interest in conference. Back to the topic on hand the Big South is forced to raid the Atlantic Sun and their newly minted automatic berth status could be in jeopardy, but there is talk about expanding the playoffs again so they may not be a concern. Round and round she goes, where she stops, nobody knows.

SoCon has 8 teams and would only have 7 if Elon leaves. A conference can keep its auto bid forever with only 6 teams, and can go 2 years with only 5. If it got down to 6, and you were one of those 6, wouldn't you be excited? Cool, we have an auto bid and our chances are 17%. Would you take the invite from another mediocre conference? Or go to CAA where there are already about 15 teams? I don't care which conference it is. Any conference with an auto-bid will do whatever it can to keep the auto-bid. There are tons of schools in the area who could move up to Div 1.

Unfortunately, because of NCAA automatic bid issues in Olympic sports, forming a new conference can get dicey. It takes six full Division I members that have competed against each other for the past five years. So, it's doable but it takes cooperation from a good chunk of schools to make it happen.

A new FBS conference? I think the Big Boys and the NCAA will probably have a beef with that. The established schools do not want more competition in terms of recruiting and I'm sure Dilbert in the cubicle at the NCAA office might be of the opinion that these schools upgrading is more dilution at the highest level.

By the way, when is NJIT getting a conference home? NEC, America East, Patriot League, or MAAC, make it happen. Heck, even the CAA at this point wouldn't be too much of a stretch as they need teams, too.

They may not survive. One of their largest rivalries is already dead, Appalachian State and Western Carolina, in the name of football and with Davidson headed out it could be the end. The CAA is looking to replace members and many of the Southern Conference teams are targets. Western Carolina is one of them and Elon is another. Unless the CAA takes a northern route and brings in some of their football schools, i.e. Maine and New Hampshire, but that seems unlikely at this point, the southern conference could take a final blow. I think the instability of the southern conference will cause the other schools in the Big South to stay put and if the Southern Conference is to survive, they might have to try and get some of the non scholarship football schools to change their stance and expand in that manner.
