2010-11 Kentucky Basketball TV Schedule

The 2010-11 Kentucky Wildcats basketball schedule has finally been released. The Wildcats kick off the 2010-11 NCAA basketball season against East Tennessee State on November 12th, 2010. The Cats then play Portland before taking on the Oklahoma Sooners on November 22nd. The Wildcats then travel to play in Hawaii in the Maui Invitational on November 24th. This year’s matchup with the Tar Heels will be played at North Carolina on December 4th, 2010.

ESPN College Basketball Tip-Off Marathon

ESPN has announced the schedule for the third College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon that will take place on Tuesday, November 16^th, 2010. There will be 12 live college basketball games broadcast on ESPN for 24 consecutive hours for the second straight season. There will be 20 total live games across the ESPN network with games being show on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPN3.com.

Featured games in the Tip-Off marathon will feature three of the four teams that were in the 2010 NCAA Final Four (Butler, Michigan State, and Duke). The defending women’s champ, Connecticut, will also be playing against Louisville during the tip-off marathon. The day’s events will commence with Memphis hosting Miami at midnight. The marathon will also feature 21 conferences to include The SEC, ACC, Atlantic 10, Big East, Big 12, Big Ten, and others. The final two games shown during the marathon will feature Butler playing at Louisville and South Carolina at Michigan State.

Tigers Suffer Barton Blow

Scouting organizations had Memphis coach Josh Pastner as the second best recruiter this past off-season, but high hopes that the Tigers would be back to their best in 2010-11 have taken a serious hit.

Will Barton, who the best basketball tipsters consider as arguably the best shooting guard to join the college ranks this year, has been ruled academically ineligible by the NCAA and would now seem unlikely ever to pull on a Tigers jersey before heading off to the NBA next summer.

Barton was with the Tigers for their first few practices of the late summer before being told that he was ineligible, seemingly stemming from the fact he had been to a number of high schools before arriving at Memphis, something that always brings up a red flag with collegiate sporting officials.

Barton was expected to be a huge contributor in Pastner’s second season with the Tigers, and he will appeal the decision, but if it does come to light that he failed to graduate in the NCAA’s time-frame, then there is little he or Memphis can do about it.

He will have options even if the NCAA declares him ineligible, perhaps following Brandon Jennings’ example and heading off to Europe, but that is of no consolation to the Tigers, despite their incoming class oozing ability and skill without Barton.

Sadly, it appears that previous history may have also come back to haunt Memphis; this is not the first time they have had issues to answer over academic questions (Derrick Rose, Pierre Henderson-Niles) and it appears the NCAA has had enough of it, despite Barton’s ‘mistake’ being the least egregious.

So, for now, basketball betting pundits note how the Tigers have to move on without Barton, but the disappointment might just be lessened by the quality of the rest of their class, which could well include as many as five freshmen making up part of their rotation.

Chief among them seems to be Joe Jackson, who would appear likely to start in the backcourt, while Jelan Kendrick, Tarik Black and Chris Crawford could all play significant minutes in their first season, one that could see the Tigers back at the top of the Conference USA table after losing out to UTEP last time around.

Washington Redskins rookie, Brandon Banks, returned a punt return on Friday night for a 77 yard touchdown run. In that single run, Banks almost had more yards than Randle El had last season. What was even more interested for Washington Wizards and Kentucky Wildcats basketball fans was that Banks celebrated his touchdown by doing the John Wall dance in the end zone. Banks and Wall both went to school in the Raleigh area and knew each other from high school.

2010-11 UCLA Bruins Basketball Schedule

The 2010-11 UCLA Men’s basketball schedule was released at the end of June. The times are still listed as TBD until the finalized college basketball TV schedules are determined so specific dates could change somewhat. For the upcoming season, UCLA will be trying to make it back above the .500 mark after finishing the 2009-10 season 14-18. Non-conference highlights for this coming year include playing in the 2010 NIT season tip-off in New York, taking on the Kansas Jayhawks on the road, and hosting St. John’s on February 5^th, 2011. The current schedule has 7 teams that made it to the 2010 NCAA tournament. UCLA will also be participating in the 17^th annual Wooden Classic one week before Christmas at the Honda Center.

PAC-10 play will commence on December 29^th against Washington State followed by a New Year’s Eve game against Washington at home. The 2011 PAC 10 tournament will be held at the Staples Center again in Los Angeles, March 9-12^th.

Drexel Pair Facing Jail

At a quiet time in the College Basketball and basketball betting world in general, the biggest news seems to be coming from the court-room, where Louisville coach Rick Pitino is part of an extortion case, and from Drexel, where the men’s hoops program could be about to fall apart.

Two players from the Philadelphia school, a member of the Colonial Athletic Conference, face robbery and weapons charges after an armed robbery took place at a fellow student’s apartment.

Police allege that starting point guard Jamie Harris and forward Kevin Phillip hatched a scheme with a third man to steal money believed to be on the premises in Western Philadelphia last week.

All three face robbery, theft and weapons charges but the Drexel players only turned themselves in almost 48 hours after arrest warrants were issued, some media outlets reporting them to be fugitives on the run from the law.

According to the police reports, the three accused managed to make it away with only two cell phones but the charges they face could mean serious sanctions personally, and will almost certainly mean trouble for the basketball team.

Harris is one of the better players on a squad that went 16-16 and would have been looking to push on towards claiming a place in the expanded March Madness field, but it remains to be seen whether he will be a part of the Dragons roster by the time practice starts in a couple of months.

Whatever the outcome, it is trouble that coach Bruiser Flint could have done without as he makes his plans for the season, and it seems unlikely according to most basketball predictions that he would ever have been thinking about having to prepare without his leading scorer and top producer of assists.

Without Harris, Drexel’s season could well be doomed before it even starts, and again it comes thanks to a story where you find it hard to think of anything to say but ‘Why?’ Harris could well have been looking at a career in the NBA – now prison might be more likely.

March Madness Reaches 68

Changes to the NCAA men’s basketball tournament have been confirmed with the 64-team event no more, to be replaced by a 68-team extravaganza from the coming season.

The new teams will feature in ‘First Four’ games with schools seeded 65 thru 68 meeting for the right to face the two top-seeded teams overall, while the other two games will feature the last four at-large teams to qualify, leaving the chance open for some big matches on the first day of the tournament.

Those at-large teams will then go on to be seeded where they usually would have been in the tournament bracket, so a first-rounder featuring a couple of No 11 seeds would be playing for the right to take on one of the No 6s what will now be termed the second round.

Basketball betting pundits note that much is going to depend on the teams that eventually are forced to play their way into the field, but it certainly opens the door, not only for three extra teams to reach the post-season, but also for some closer games in the early going, when many of them end up being one-sided blowouts.

The only dissenting voices seem to have come from those who wanted the tournament to be increased to as many as 96 teams in one hit, surely a step too far despite plenty of schools admitting they would love for it to happen to help their finances.

It will also give exposure to a few more small schools since there is a guarantee from the Turner Network that all of the games will be shown live, and most likely not at the same time as any other, meaning national exposure for schools who may never usually get it.

They seem to have gotten the mix just about right with this idea as it does not impact hugely on the availability of places in the field for the more unlikely heroes of recent seasons, and it certainly doesn’t impact on the big reason we and even NBA betting pundits all love the college game so much – filling out our brackets!

2010 Preseason College Basketball Rankings

The 2010-11 college basketball season is still a number of months away, but its time for our preseason, post-NBA draft declaration, post-spring signing period preseason college basketball rankings. Its hard to do a preseason ranking based on teams that no one has seen play, so these rankings are based on last year’s performance, returning players, recruiting class depth, performance of last year’s recruiting class, and my judgement. Purdue, Duke, and Michigan State all return significant talent from last year, while the Kentucky Wildcats have reloaded under coach John Calipari this season with another top recruiting class. Josh Pastner should also have the Memphis Tigers back in the thick of the national rankings this season with a top 5 recruiting class after failing to make the 2010 NCAA tournament.

2010 Preseason College Basketball Rankings

1 – Purdue Boilermakers

Purdue loses two guards from last year’s squad in Chris Kramer and Keaton Grant. They return star Robbie Hummel, JaJuan Johnson, and E’Twuan Moore, however, and should be a Final Four contender. Their primary competition in the Big Ten will come from the Michigan State Spartans.

2 – Duke Blue Devils

I don’t think anyone besides Duke fans predicted that they would win the 2010 NCAA championship. They did, and Kyle Singer has chosen to return for his senior season which lands Duke in the top 2 in my preseason rankings. Kyrie Irving will be running the point for Duke, however, since he’s unproven at the college level, I put Duke 2^nd instead of #1. Duke also has Seth Curry eligible this season after transferring from Liberty, Nolan Smith, and Andre Dawkins returning. Miles and Mason Plumlee will be looked to for providing inside depth with center Brian Zoubek gone this season. It may take a few weeks of regular season play for the Blue Devils to get used to playing without departed point guard Jon Scheyer, but expect another 30+ win for Coach K’s Blue Devils this season as they attempt to defend their NCAA championship.

3 – Michigan State Spartans

Michigan State lost point guard Kalin Lucas in the 2010 NCAA Tournament and still performed. They will be favored to go deep in the 2011 NCAA Tournament with only losing Raymar Morgan and Tom Herzog from last season’s team. Coach Izzo also adds Keith Appling and Adreian Payne from this year’s recruiting class.

4 – Kansas St Wildcats

K-State has Jacob Pullen back and a strong front court to match. This could very well be the season that K State can dislodge the Kansas Jayhawks from atop the Big 12.

5 – Syracuse Orangemen

Syracuse lost Wesley Johnson, Andy Rautins, and Arinze Onuaku from last year’s squad but return a significant core from the team that saw itself be ranked #1 later in the regular season. The incoming recruiting class is led by big man Fab Melo.

6 – Kentucky Wildcats

Coach Cal has reloaded the Wildcats after losing four freshmen and star Patrick Patterson to the 2010 NBA draft. Brandon Knight, Enes Kanter, and Terrance Jones highlight the star recruiting class which is again the #1 recruiting class on many websites. The Cats will miss a lot with the departure of Patterson, but Darius Miller, Josh Harrellson, DeAndre Liggins, and Darnell Dodson return to help form the nucleus for the 2010-11 Wildcats. Look for this year’s squad to take a few lumps earlier than last year’s, but they have the talent to repeat as the SEC regular and postseason champions again this season.

7 – Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State lost Evan Turner, but return the other four starters from last year’s team. They also will be much deeper this season and have star recruits coming in with Jared Sullinger and DeShaun Thomas. State does find themselves competing with Purdue and Michigan State within the Big Ten, but should find themselves ranked high much of the 2010-11 season.

8 – Memphis Tigers

Josh Pastner very nearly put together another Conference USA champion in a short timeframe to get ready after taking over the head coaching job at Memphis in April last year but lost several players to injury. Pastner has signed a star recruiting class this year and will have Memphis poised to take back over the Conference championship and be a national power again. Wesley Witherspoon may finally have the breakout season that Tiger’s fans have been expecting since he signed with Memphis, and don’t overlook the star freshmen coming in this season.

9 – Florida Gators

Florida loses Dan Werner and Ray Shipman from last year’s squad. They have another strong recruiting class inbound, and a strong backcourt with Kenny Boynton and Erving Walker leading the way this season. Look for Patrick Young to get some heavy PT early in the season and if the freshmen contribute, the Gators will be a contender in the SEC this season.

10 – Illinois Fighting Illini

The Fighting Illini return all of their starters and much of their bench after a mixed year last year. To complement the returning core, Illinois also has a strong recruiting class coming in and should be a contender in the top half of the Big Ten. Unfortunately, they have Purdue, Michigan State, and Ohio State to worry about as well, so we may have to wait until to the postseason to see how far they can go next season.
