2010 Big East Tournament Results and Previews

Thursday was a crazy day in the Big East tournament. It was almost like we had an “Opposite day today with 3 of the top 4 seeds in the tournament losing and a “blessed” bank shot going in at the buzzer for West Virginia being the only thing to keep it from being all 4 tops seeds. #1 Syracuse, #2 Pittsburgh, and #3 Villanova all lost in their opening round games. The following are the results from today’s Big East games and short previews for Friday’s games.

2010 Big East Tournament Quarterfinal Results

#8 Georgetown (22-9) 91 #1 Syracuse (28-4) 84

Syracuse big-man Arinze Onauaku had to leave the game with a knee sprain and status is now under question for the NCAA tournament. Georgetown was able to win the third matchup between the two teams led by Chris Wright who scored 27 points and Greg Monroe who had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Austin Freeman added 18 and Justin Clark 17 for the Hoyas who will play Marquette in the Big East semifinals on Friday night. The loss was the first 2 game losing streak for Syracuse this season. Wes Johnson led his team with 24 points and 7 rebounds after being named the 2010 Big East player of the year. The loss was the 6^th time that a Big East Tourney #1 seed has lost their first game of the tourney but is not necessary equated to losing the number one seed for Syracuse in the NCAA Tournament.

#5 Marquette (22-10) 80 #4 Villanova (24-7) 76

Villanova was the 2^nd team of the day in the Big East Tournament to go home early after getting the double-bye. Marquette would take the lead for good in the third matchup between the two teams this season with 1:51 to go. Villanova won the previous two games between the schools by 2 points in each contest. Marquette previously beat St. John’s 57-55 to make it to the quarterfinal matchup against the Wildcats. Darius Johnson-Odom hit 5 of 7 3 point shots and had a career high 24 points for Marquette. Villanova was led by Corey Stokes who had 22 points. Scottie Reynolds who was recently named to the All Big East first team, had 10 points on 5 of 16 shooting from the field.

#7 Notre Dame (23-10) 50vs. #2 Pittsburgh (24-8) 45

Notre Dame may be boring us to death with their slowed down play, but it has been proving to be an effective tactic in the 2010 Big East tournament as they pulled the upset of #2 seed Pitt tonight. Luke Harangody scored 12 points coming off of the bench as he works his way back into shape after his injury, and helped give the Irish their first back-to-back wins in the Big East tourney since joining the conference in the mid-90’s. Brad Wanamaker led Pitt with 16 points. Notre Dame will play West Virginia in the Big East semifinals and is not considered to be a lock for an at-large NCAA Tournament bid.

9 PM #11 Cincinnati (18-15) 51 vs. #3 West Virginia (25-6) 54

It was closer than Bob Huggins would like, but the Mountaineers finally put an end to “Opposite Day” in the Big East and prevailed in the quarterfinals on a last second 3 point shot by Da’Sean Butler made on the bank. Cincy had the ball with 6 seconds left to go, but Dion Dixon lost the ball out of bounds with 3.1 seconds to go in regulation that set up Butler’s game winning shot. Lance Stephenson led the Bearcats with 19 points and Butler led the Mountaineers with 15 points. Cincinnati’s wins over Rutgers and Louisville are probably not going to be enough to get them off of the bubble and into the NCAA tournament, but they are definitely in a stronger position than they were prior to the Big East Tourney.

2010 Big East Tournament Semifinals Preview

7:00 PM #5 Marquette (22-10) vs #8 Georgetown (22-9)

Marquette won the previous matchup against the Hoyas this season by 3 points 62-59 just after the New Year at home. The Hoyas have a slight edge with a 3 game winning streak compared to a 2 game streak for Marquette. Will Georgetown healthy, look for us to see the Hoya Team that was a Top Ten team earlier in the season with Georgetown winning by more than 5 points.

9:30 PM #3 West Virginia (25-6) vs #7 Notre Dame (23-10)

Unfortunately for West Virginia, Notre Dame has become one of the hottest teams in the Big East with having won their last 6 games. West Virginia has won their last 4, but also dropped their game on the road at Notre Dame earlier in the season, 70-68. Look for the Irish to stay hot, try to control the clock, and work a low scoring game in their favor. Notre Dame should win by less than 5 points.

March Madness is well underway. 14 of the 31 automatic bids to the 2010 NCAA Tournament have been determined. The Ivy League does not host a postseason tournament, instead awarding their automatic bid to the NCAA Tourney to the regular season champion who was Cornell this year. Already some exciting games with Montana winning one of the tightest championships so far with a 1 point victory to take the Big South Conference title. Buffalo, New York will be host to the first and second round of the 2010 NCAA Basketball Tournament on Friday March 19^th and Sunday March 21^st, 2010. Championship Week College Basketball Preview, ACC and Big 12 Conference Play

The 2010 ACC Basketball tournament kicks off on Thursday March 11^th and the Big 12 tournament enters its quarterfinal round. Note-able surprises in the Big 12 tournament so far have included Nebraska pulling a surprise upset of Missouri and Texas Tech defeating Colorado (ok maybe not a big surprise on that one). ACC play sees Clemson, Georgia Tech, and Wake Forest all looking for opening round wins to try to stay out of the NCAA Tournament bubble with teams like UVA and UNC trying to figure out what has gone wrong the past few months of the season.

2010 ACC Basketball Tournament Opening Round

#8 Boston College vs. #9 UVA Noon RAYCOM

Boston College Record: 15-15, 6-10

Leading Scorer: Forward, Joel Trapani 14.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg

Last 5 Games: 2-3

UVA Record: 14-15, 5-11

Leading Scorer: Guard, Sylven Landesberg, 17.4 ppg, 2.9 apg

Last 5 Games: 0-5

Preview:

UVA has had a fairly large collapse to end the season. They started off ACC play 5-2, and 14-6 overall on the season and were in first place in the ACC. Then, who knows what happened. The Cavs lost the last 9 games of the season to include a 68-55 loss to B.C. On March 3^rd. Look for more of the same in this matchup with BC coming out on top.
#5 Wake Forest vs. #12 Miami 2 p.m. RAYCOM
Wake Forest Record:19-9, 9-7

Preview: Neither of these teams burned it up the last 5 games of ACC conference play. Miami did do their best to snatch last place in regular season play from the jaws of NC State and UNC though, so I’m giving the nod to Wake Forest due to talent level in this game. The teams split their regular season matchups, home and home.

Georgia Tech Record: 19-11, 7-9

Leading Scorer: Forward, Gani Lawal, 13.6 ppg, 8.8 rpg

Last 5 Games: 2-3

North Carolina Record: 16-15, 5-11

Leading Scorer: Forward, Deon Thompason, 13.7 ppg, 6.2 rpg

Last 5 Games: 2-3

Preview: UNC has been struggling since January. Both teams are 2-3 to close out the season, but Georgia Tech won both matchups against the Tar Heels this season. Most people are taking Tech in this game, but don’t underestimate the power of Roy Williams to motivate the Tar Heels into performing in this game to either pull an upset or at least make us watch it into the 2^nd half (unlike the season ending Duke game!).

#6 Clemson vs. #11 NC State 9 p.m. RAYCOM

Clemson Record: 21-9, 9-7

Leading Scorer: 3-2

NC State Record: 17-14, 5-11

Preview: Clemson won the regular season matchup between the two schools, 73-70. Each team is 3-2 in their last 5 games, but Clemson has been stronger all season. I’m going with Clemson in a close game over State.

2010 Big 12 Basketball Conference Tournament Quarterfinals

Game 5: #9 Texas Tech vs #1 Kansas 11:30 a.m. ESPN2

Kansas Record: 29-2, 15-1

Leading Scorer: Guard, Sherron Collins, 15.3 ppg, 4.3 apg

Last 5 Games: 4-1

Texas Tech Record: 17-14, 4-12

Leading Scorer: Forward, Mike Singletary, 14.9 ppg, 6.2 rpg

Last 5 Games: 1-4

Preview: Texas Tech broke a 4 game losing streak by beating Colorado 82-67 in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament. They did not keep it close against Kansas earlier in the season, and don’t look for them to turn it around in this game.
Game 6: #12 Nebraska vs #4 Texas A&M 2:00 p.m. Big 12 Network

Texas A&M Record:22-8, 11-5

Leading Scorer: Donald Sloan, 17.9 ppg

Nebraska Record: 15-17, 2-14

Leading Scorer: Guard, Ryan Anderson, 11.0 ppg, 5.2 rpg

Last 5 Games: 2-3

Preview: Nebraska was impressive in their opening round win over Mizzou. They lost to the Aggies on the road earlier in the season. Look for Nebraska to keep the game close for about a half but for the Aggies to win.

Game 7: #7 Oklahoma State vs #2 Kansas State 6:00 p.m. Big 12 Network
Kansas State Record: 24-6, 11-5

Leading Scorer: Jacob Pullen, Guard, 18.9 ppg

Last 5 Games: 3-2

Oklahoma State Record: 22-9

Leading Scorer: Guard, James Anderson, 22.9 ppg, 6.0 rpg

Last 5 Games: 3-2

Preview: K State had been hot, and then dropped their season finale to Iowa State after getting thumped by the Jahwaks. Oklahoma State has been pretty hot and knocked off the Jayhawks a few weeks ago. Look for the Cowboys to pull off another upset in this game.

Baylor Record: 24-6, 11-5

College Basketball TV Schedule and News – March 10

Wednesday kicks off the Conference USA and Big 12 conference tournaments with the second round of Big East play commencing. UCONN let their hopes of an at-large ticket to the NCAA tournament die with the lopsided loss to USF yesterday with several bubble teams in play today with USF vs Georgetown and Seton Hall vs Notre Dame. USF and Seton Hall are considered to need at least one more win to have a good shot at an at-large bid to the NCAA Tourney. The Northeast and Big Sky Conference tournament championships are also on tonight with Weber State and Quinnipiac being the two favorites.

NCAA Regionals – St Louis Midwest Regional

The 2010 NCAA Basketball Tournament Midwest Regionals will be held Friday March 26th and Sunday March 28th, 2010 in St Louis Missouri at the Edward Jones Dome. The Missouri Valley Conference will be hosting the event and the city last hosted the NCAA Tournament during the 2005 NCAA Final Four.
The Edward Jones Dome is located in downtown St Louis and is normally home to the NFL St Louis Rams. There is a maximum capacity of 66,000 to include a number of luxury and club seats. You can access the Dome via I-64, I-55, or I-44. If you decide to stay in a downtown St Louis hotel, you will be close to both the NCAA Tournament games as well as the downtown restaurants and nightlife.

NCAA Regionals – Houston South Regional Info

The 2010 NCAA Basketball Tournament South Regionals will be held Friday March 26th and Sunday March 28th, 1010 at Reliant Stadium in downtown Houston, Texas. Rice University and the University of Houston will be hosting the event.
Reliant Stadium is part of Reliant park and normally hosts the Houston Texans NFL football team. There is a total seating capacity of 70,000 and the stadium is located off of both I-45 and I-10. If you are not staying walking distance from the hotel, the METRO Rail runs from various locations around the city to the stadium to make parking easier. If you are traveling to Houston for the South regionals, staying in a downtown Houston hotel will put you walking distance from the NCAA tourney games. Houston will also be hosting the 2011 NCAA Final Four and 2016 Final Four.
