Montana was led by Anthony Johnson in the Big Sky championship with a record 42 points. He was perfect from the free throw line shooting 14 – 14, and was 13 of 22 from the field. Johnson had been averaging 19.6 ppg this year. He is complemented by center Brian Qvale who scores 10 points a game and grabs 7 boards per contest.

The Grizzlies have had a decent performance against major teams in their non-conference schedule this season with a win over Oregon earlier in the season and a loss to the Washington Huskies by four points.

Montana shoots 49 percent from the field and averages more than 40 percent from the 3. Entering the Big Sky tournament, Montana had lost two of three games. The Grizzlies have gone 4-1 in their past 5 games.

Montana will likely be a 15 or a 16 seed in the 2010 NCAA tournament. If they are able to get a 15 seed, there will be a slight chance for the Grizzlies to pull an upset, but not considered likely. If Johnson can have another career outing, Montana may be able to keep it close against the likely #1 or #2 seeds in the tourney.

Over the past 6 NCAA tournament appearances, Winthrop has gone 1-5 and the team has made it to the tourney in five of the past six seasons. The finished the 2009-10 regular season in third place in the Big South behind Coastal Carolina and Radford.

The Eagles started off this season with a bumpy start going 2-4. They did have a significant winning streat mid-season, winning 7 games in a row and going 10-1. Winthrop was also able to defeat Coastal Carolina two times as well as Radford.

The Winthrop Eagles are known as a defensive team and held Coastal Carolina to 53 points in the conference tournament and Radford to less than 50. Only a few teams have scored greater than 70 points against the Eagles since Christmas.

The Eagles are led by guard Reggie Middleton who scores just more than 10 points per game. The team shoots below 30 % from 3 and is only a 65% free throw shooting team. The Eagles do not have a true assists leader on the team, with no one player averaging more than 3 per game.

2010 Big South Tournament Championship

Winthrop was .500 in their out of conference schedule, going 7-7. Entering the Big South Tourney, they were the third seed in the conference. It is projected the the Winthrop Eagles will be a 15 or a 16 seed in the 2010 NCAA tournament. Expect the Eagles to make a decent showing but not make it to the second round of the tourney.

The season began with the Panthers at 1-1, shortly thereafter to arise as victors from another fifteen matches. Perhaps their most sobering defeat was that of the match at Evansville, in which they lost by a simple one point, with a final score of 9 to 21. Quickly recovering, however, Northern Iowa moved on to win their next four games.

It appears as though the Panthers are going to be this year’s upset team (once again) when trying to complete your brackets. Northern Iowa has returned this year with five starters who were on the prior year’s team. They’ve proven their abilities to make a shot from just about anywhere – so long as they’re about 28 feet from the basket. Jordan Eglseder, the Panther’s senior center, coming in at just about seven feet tall, loves to defend low. On average, he scores approximately twelve points per game, with 7 to 8 rebounds as well. Kwadzo Ahelegbe, the team’s junior guard, only was able to manage about 10 points per game – but he’s blessed with the feared shooter’s touch, which might just offset your bracket if you don’t keep that in mind.

One thing to always keep in mind is Northern Iowa’s defensive abilities. The Panthers have, since January of this year, only failed to prevent sixty points or above three times. The team would be right at home in an NCAA game, due to the fact that they spend the majority of the time shooting from the free throw line. This is something to think about as the end of a tournament approaches.

Unfortunately, the Panthers don’t have that spark when it comes to rebounding. Currently, they are under about thirty three boards on average. Although a presence down low, Eglseder could easily be stopped by a team that houses two or three men of a larger statute who will be able to easily slow things down for the Panthers.

If you’ve been wondering whether or not Northern Iowa is an Elite Eight team, I’m going to have to say that they are not. However, I can’t say that I would be shocked if they encountered a few more victories during the current NCAA tournament. It looks like the perimeter shot will eventually be their downfall.

The Golden Grizzlies from Oakland, during the 2010 Summit League tournament, successfully came out on top in a game with the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis: 76 to 64. As a result of this game, the team received their spot in the 2010 NCAA tournament. During the regular season’s conference championship, Oakland won seventeen to one in the Summit League.

In the 09-10 basketball season, Oakland managed to play against several renowned teams. As some had expected, those specific games did not play out in the Golden Grizzlies’ favor. Oakland lost to Wisconsin by sixteen points. Against Kansas, the Grizzlies were crushed. Memphis annihilated Oakland in a staggering 77 to 46. As if that wasn’t enough, Syracuse proceeded to destroy them with 92 to 60. In the Summit League, however, Oakland managed to win against all opponents except IUPUI.

Only four of Oakland’s players are able to average at least 11 points per contest. Keith Benson, the team’s center, takes the lead in points, blocks and rebounds, whereas Derrick Nelson shoots from behind the arc 40% of the time, scores 12 points a game, and has 6 successful rebounds. In the way of assists, Oakland has an average of 13 and a half each game, but the average number of turnovers is 14! In the match against IUPUI, Benson, Nelson, and guard Larry Wright were able to muster sixteen points.

One trend with NCAA tournaments is that the possibility of what is known as a Cinderella appears in the first round of games. In this situation, a team has taken the lead with about seven or eight minutes left in the 2nd half. However, the lead always manages to disappear due to a lack of depth. A small school might only be 4 deep, with their opponent being seven to eight deep.

Oakland is no exception. The team’s starters are facing a massive disadvantage against the major conference schools. The Golden Grizzlies were held bench to 6 points by IUPUI. Other schools will not be performing any worse. Despite the fact that Oakland is, in fact, coming into 2010 with a nice victory streak behind them, not many give much attention to the Summit League unless they were involved.

Greg Kampe, the coach of the Golden Grizzlies, wants his team to survive to at least the Sweet Sixteen. The only problem there is that Oakland hasn’t even been remotely close to a victory against a major team. It looks like 2010 will be a sad year for Oakland, as they will probably be a once-and-done team.

2010 Conference Tournament Results

2010 ACC Basketball Tournament

Georgia Tech prevailed over the Tar Heels keeping North Carolina out of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since I think I was 2 making their chances even more solid of getting an at-large bid to the tournament. Wake Forest has continued their late season collapse and were killed by Miami making it 5 of 6 games that they’ve lost at the end of the season. Clemson also got upset in the first round by N.C. State dropping them in the projected seedings.

2010 Big East Basketball Tournament

Syracuse didn’t drop from their #1 seed position after their loss due to the work done during the season by the Orange and the other top seeds in the Big East Tournament losing. Villanova and Pitt dropped some after their losses while Notre Dame and Marquette have risen based on their recent play. West Virginia and Georgetown are the favorites in semifinal play today, but it will be interesting to see which team survives the Big East to emerge with the tournament championship. 2010 Big 12 Basketball Tournament

2010 Big Ten Basketball Tournament

Illinois and Minnesota started Saturday as the teams on the bubble in the Big Ten. Minnesota defeated Penn State to kick off the tourney on Thursday. Illinois, on the other hand, pulled a significant upset of Wisconsin in the two team’s third meeting this season. The win will help the Illini make up for their 13 losses in order to get into the NCAA Tournament. Ohio State had probably the most exciting game today, with 2010 Naismith Trophy finalist Evan Turner making a full court shot to beat the Michigan Wolverines. Minnesota was able to get back into the Tourney picture with an upset of Michigan State and break the 20 win barrier for the season.

2010 Big 12 Basketball Tournament

The Big 12 tournament has proceeded in predictable fashion will all of the top seeds progressing to the semifinal games. Kansas, K State, Texas A&M, and Baylor all made it to the semis with the Jayhawks remaining the favorite to win the conference tournament after putting A& M away later in the 2^nd half for good today to setup another matchup with Kansas State today.

2010 MWC Conference Tournament

The top seeds in the MWC progressed to move on to the semifinals on Friday. UNLV, BYU, and New Mexico were considered locks for the tournament entering the semifinals and SDSU is now as well after upsetting New Mexicto 70-69.

2010 Conference USA Tournament

UAB is now removed from my bracketology board after losing to Memphis at the end of the regular season and then getting killed by Southern Mississippi. Memphis has also likely worked their way out of the 2010 NCAA tournament due to their lack of quality wins against the RPI top 50. UTEP was able to hold off Tulsa in the semifinals 75-61 and Houston continued their run in the tournament by defeating Southern Miss, 74-66. If Houston upsets UTEP in the championship game, UTEP will still likely be in the tournament.

2010 PAC 10 Basketball Conference Tournament

ASU lost to Stanford to move into NIT-land for this season and Washington is now the only conference team with a shot at an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. Cal is considered a lock for making the tourney. Washington should be on the verge of a lock for the NCAA tournament with making it to the PAC-10 championship game against Cal.

2010 SEC Basketball Tournament

Florida should be a safe bet for the NCAA tourney despite losing to Mississippi State today. Ole Miss was not able to get it done against the Volunteers today, so they are not out. Vandy was cruising over Georgia at the time of this writing and can improve their NCAA tournament seeding with a win over Mississippi State tomorrow.

2010 Big East Tournament Quarterfinal Results

#8 Georgetown (22-9) 91 #1 Syracuse (28-4) 84

Syracuse big-man Arinze Onauaku had to leave the game with a knee sprain and status is now under question for the NCAA tournament. Georgetown was able to win the third matchup between the two teams led by Chris Wright who scored 27 points and Greg Monroe who had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Austin Freeman added 18 and Justin Clark 17 for the Hoyas who will play Marquette in the Big East semifinals on Friday night. The loss was the first 2 game losing streak for Syracuse this season. Wes Johnson led his team with 24 points and 7 rebounds after being named the 2010 Big East player of the year. The loss was the 6^th time that a Big East Tourney #1 seed has lost their first game of the tourney but is not necessary equated to losing the number one seed for Syracuse in the NCAA Tournament.

#5 Marquette (22-10) 80 #4 Villanova (24-7) 76

Villanova was the 2^nd team of the day in the Big East Tournament to go home early after getting the double-bye. Marquette would take the lead for good in the third matchup between the two teams this season with 1:51 to go. Villanova won the previous two games between the schools by 2 points in each contest. Marquette previously beat St. John’s 57-55 to make it to the quarterfinal matchup against the Wildcats. Darius Johnson-Odom hit 5 of 7 3 point shots and had a career high 24 points for Marquette. Villanova was led by Corey Stokes who had 22 points. Scottie Reynolds who was recently named to the All Big East first team, had 10 points on 5 of 16 shooting from the field.

#7 Notre Dame (23-10) 50vs. #2 Pittsburgh (24-8) 45

Notre Dame may be boring us to death with their slowed down play, but it has been proving to be an effective tactic in the 2010 Big East tournament as they pulled the upset of #2 seed Pitt tonight. Luke Harangody scored 12 points coming off of the bench as he works his way back into shape after his injury, and helped give the Irish their first back-to-back wins in the Big East tourney since joining the conference in the mid-90’s. Brad Wanamaker led Pitt with 16 points. Notre Dame will play West Virginia in the Big East semifinals and is not considered to be a lock for an at-large NCAA Tournament bid.

9 PM #11 Cincinnati (18-15) 51 vs. #3 West Virginia (25-6) 54

It was closer than Bob Huggins would like, but the Mountaineers finally put an end to “Opposite Day” in the Big East and prevailed in the quarterfinals on a last second 3 point shot by Da’Sean Butler made on the bank. Cincy had the ball with 6 seconds left to go, but Dion Dixon lost the ball out of bounds with 3.1 seconds to go in regulation that set up Butler’s game winning shot. Lance Stephenson led the Bearcats with 19 points and Butler led the Mountaineers with 15 points. Cincinnati’s wins over Rutgers and Louisville are probably not going to be enough to get them off of the bubble and into the NCAA tournament, but they are definitely in a stronger position than they were prior to the Big East Tourney.

2010 Big East Tournament Semifinals Preview

7:00 PM #5 Marquette (22-10) vs #8 Georgetown (22-9)

Marquette won the previous matchup against the Hoyas this season by 3 points 62-59 just after the New Year at home. The Hoyas have a slight edge with a 3 game winning streak compared to a 2 game streak for Marquette. Will Georgetown healthy, look for us to see the Hoya Team that was a Top Ten team earlier in the season with Georgetown winning by more than 5 points.

9:30 PM #3 West Virginia (25-6) vs #7 Notre Dame (23-10)

Unfortunately for West Virginia, Notre Dame has become one of the hottest teams in the Big East with having won their last 6 games. West Virginia has won their last 4, but also dropped their game on the road at Notre Dame earlier in the season, 70-68. Look for the Irish to stay hot, try to control the clock, and work a low scoring game in their favor. Notre Dame should win by less than 5 points.
